I was a beta tester and was still able to use the card as renewal. I called MS to confirm (as my contract was due to renew on 12.14.2004, and jumped to start at 4.25.2004 and end 4.25.2005) and sure enough there was a $50 credit on my account for my unused live renewal from last december.

Plus, second headset as a spare to my original. Woot.
