I have to say this is the first time I've been able to get Ultima VII or Ascension running without any headaches though.  Glad they put them all up for us lazy bastards

I did LOL at the size differences for the installers, U8 is 70 meg, U9 is 1 gig.

If you have a passing interest in ultima, it's worth 4 bucks.  But it was a disappointment in 1999, and hasn't aged well in the years since.

It's an insult to the hardcore Ultima fans (they get SO MANY THINGS WRONG with the game it's not even funny) and it's a terrible buggy piece of crap mechanically that fails on multiple levels.

In short, no. Unless you like junk.

It is worth $4 even though it is buggy.  Just be sure to find the fan patch that replaces the dialogue with sane, logical-to-Ultima dialogue.  Turn off the voice soundtrack or you'll read the good stuff while listening to words that make your ears bleed.

I have been the biggest Ultima fan since III, and while U9 was a travesty - I forced myself to enjoy it for what it was.  I played through it twice: once with the original script and again with the fan patch.  The world is quite amazing, at the time at least.  There are many hidden cool things, and some of the attention to detail is excellent.  However, for all the good there is an exact and equal amount of bad.  Most Ultima fans focused on the bad as it was such a disappointment.  I was one of them who was disappointed, but knowing it was the last I would see of the "Trilogy of Trilogies" I tried to enjoy it and found that it wasn't as difficult as I thought.  To this day though, every time I see this game I wish they had stuck with the original plan of an over-head, 3d, rotatable map that was previewed in many magazines years ago.  I wish I was in the old TV show "Sliders" so I could find an alternate reality where that original U9 game was made!

So, um... yeah... it's worth $4.00...

Excellent viewing!  I was shouting at my screen the first time I played during the Avatar's first conversation with Lord British.  Thankfully the dialogue patch fixed it... the best it could!

in all fairness in almost every game you get to ask questions to stuff you should already know by now.

I have been fiddling around with U9 from GOG and I have to say it is definitely clunky, but in a way I'm enjoying it.  I will have to check out the fan patch though.

So what set of patches are recommended for U9? The GOG version is 1.19f which is the "fan patch" version AFAIK and I see there is a "Forgotten World" 1.19H patch that just came out and which they will continue to update. And then there are the "The Monster, Economy and Dialogue Patches" the last of which is the one I assume Vinda-Lou meant. What are you all using?
