Looks like DVD Soon has a halloween sale on, and I thought I'd come here and mention it for anyone who's interested. I'd imagine that it will end when the day turns over to November 1st, EST-- but I'm honestly not sure.

It looks like they've rounded most prices to sixes-- which I think is silly, but some of the savings are great. For example, titles that were $9.98 are $6.66.  Items that I ordered the other dayat $21.98 are $16.66, and $31.98 has become $26.66. (Prices in Canadian dollars.)

That being said, they've also rounded up in some cases-- I noticed that $15.98 items have become $16.66, and a DVD that was $23.98 has increased to the $26.66 figure. So, you need to be smart. Check prices with another site, to make sure that you're getting a good deal. Pricegrabber.com seems to be reporting their most recent prices before the sale, so checking there will let you know whether an item's gone up or down.


Other things you should know:

- DVD Soon is a Canadian site, but they'll ship to the U.S. (and I believe they have many U.S. customers). I don't know how bad the customs charges can be, but I once read that they attempted to understate to avoid incurring them. Basically, shop at your own risk, or do your own research.

- As they're located in Québec, if you're shopping from Canada but are located in a different province, you only pay GST. If you're shopping from outside of Canada, no sales tax!

- Standard shipping is free.

- They charge your credit card at the time of purchase. This can be a nuisance if they're not able to ship for some time. You are able to cancel an order before it enters "packaging" status, but I hear you have to navigate bureaucracy to get the money back in your pocket.

- Eight items per order, but you can place multiple orders.


Personally, I placed a rather large order (seven items) with them this past Thursday. So I'm a little annoyed with the sale. (I would have saved nearly $20 CAD.) They'd processed most of the items, too, so I can't cancel and re-order. That being said, I still got a good deal, and their prices are routinely great.

This is a great opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping!

Deal still appears to be on, as of the time of writing this. Though the site has been "lagged" badly ever since yesterday.

I hope I didn't scare away potential U.S. customers with my comments-- their policies and the possibility of customs charges aside, I think you could still stand to save a ton of money depending on what you're interested in.

I've never had to pay any extra customs charges for anything I've bought from Canada.  I used to order from Dragon.ca and a couple of Canada ebay stores all the time.

What do you mean by "extra"?

As a Canadian resident who buys semi-frequently from U.S. merchants, I've only ever had to pay a standard tax/customs charge. But even that's rare, as many items I order are small in size, or the sender will mark "gift". Additionally, I believe any shipment valued under $15 is exempt-- though this figure varies by country.

So I really don't know what one might have to pay, importing from DVD Soon. I'd just hope that the possibility of a charge isn't scaring away potential customers.

Honestly, I've been rather frustrated with DVD Soon's service on a couple of occasions in the past. But I've always received what I paid for, and the prices are routinely excellent in comparison to other retailers.

You're not the only one.  They're not worth the hassle, IMO.  DeepDiscountDVD is just as cheap, and much more reliable.

From what I've scanned, I've found many of DVD Soon's prices to be better than Deep Discount DVD's. Especially on box sets/television seasons. Though I don't check often. Currently, DDD is selling the Babylon 5 seasons for $75 each USD. DS has them for $63. Stargate SG-1 seasons 1-3? $46-$48 compared to $29. They're about equal on 4-7, though.

Just last week, I purchased the first season of Garfield and Friends for about $26. DDD's price is $29. Then, I pre-ordered season two for $22 under their halloween prices.  Unfortunately, they've both been raised to $29 at DS, as of today.

You see, I am a Canadian resident-- so if the prices are better, the free shipping and lack of customs concerns makes DS preferable. While they've certainly aggravated me in the past, I've always received what I've paid for. My issue is more with customer support, site status, and the one order which it took them very long to deliver. But typically, the delivery time from Québec  to me (using free standard shipping) is one day, assuming the product is in stock.

I don't disagree with you; it may very well be that DDD or other sites might be better for you as a U.S. resident-- especially if you want the product now, don't want to risk poor service, etc. But some of DVD Soon's prices are just superlative, as was the case with the halloween sale. I know that they fluctuate under normal circumstances, though.

Speaking of the sale, it appears to be over now. But many items have only been rounded up to $x.98, so items formerly $9.98 CAD are still only $6.98 CAD! I noticed that some box sets/more expensive DVDs are higher in price than they were before the sale, now, though.
