Passing this on from the Wanderers boards:

/pimping on

Holy cow Dell is having a great discount on laptops. Go see www.gotapex.com for the details (standard disclaimers, not my site, no vested interest, yadda yadda yadda).

Baslcally $750 off any laptop selling for $1500 or more. I just priced an Inspiron 9100 with a 3.2GHz P4, 1 GB Ram, 15.4 WUGXA screen, Radeon Mobility 9700 with 128 MB RAM, wireless card... $1400 bucks after the discount. If you need a laptop, check it out.

Okay, this is awesome.  Perfect timing for me to see this post.  I'm about ready to order a Dell laptop for my wife.

Any recommendations?  Here are my/her requirements:
The keyboard can't be too cramped.
She will only be using this laptop for e-mail, our finances, internet, and  minor webmaster tasks.
Internal wireless card (we have a wireless network in the house)

Thanks for the heads up!

Keyboard might be an issue since most laptops have somewhat crappy ones. But you can always buy a USB keyboard and plug it right in, that's not really a big issue.

If it's just light stuff, no gaming (boo!) then you certainly don't need a high powered video card or a big HD. You might have to add stuff on to make it hit 1500 though.

Wireless card - choices are an a/b card or an a/b/g card I believe. They're 100 or 200 bucks I think; the g is higher speed, but of course if your hub is a/b only you won't see it (and for email and web surfing it's not clear the g will make a difference unless you have a great connection to the net).

Yeah, I just can't see myself playing top of the line games on a laptop.  I will probably play some old stuff on it though.

I just ordered a Inspiron 5160 with a P4 3.2 mobile chip, 512MB RAM, 64MB Geforce card, 60 GB harddrive, DVD/CD burner, burner software, internal wireless card, and wireless mouse for $906 total.  Cool.  My wife will be happy.

Thanks again, Charlatan

Is it me or is the 9100 no longer on there?

I was thinking about getting a second laptop for myself in the New Year and was looking at the 8600 since it's more portable but plenty powerful to run stuff. This is definitely a very tempting deal.

Woot!  I just ordered this:

Inspiron 8600
Pentium M 1.6Mhz / Intel 2200 b/g wireless
15.4" WUXGA Display
128 MB ATI Mobile 9600 PROTURBO
1GB RAM
60 GB HD
CD-RW/DVD Combo drive

Thanks for that link!  I've been wanting a laptop for a long time and decided to finally take the plunge.  Goodbye desktop!

Simon, that's really weird.  I just clicked on it earlier and had two windows open comparing it to the 8600 setup.  Now...it's gone.

Hey... The 9100 vanished.

That's the perfect combo between speed/power and cost.

Jerks.

I read at the Gotapex forums that Dell is clearing their inventory for new models, so the 9100 is probably all sold out now with this deal.

If I read it correctly, this deal only goes for 24 hrs, and ends at 6AM tomorrow morning. This is also one of the best computer deals I've ever seen. I'd certainly jump on it, if you can.

I have heard a few reports of orders being cancelled.  It seems that they are running out of components because they were swamped and are not able to make all of the notebooks.

My order is still good.  They say it will ship by the end of the month.

Mine is currently being boxed up.  That was fast!  I had to call yesterday because the website somehow dropped my wireless option.  They were so swamped with orders that I was on the phone (to India) for 3 hours.  It sucked, but now I understand why.  What a great deal!
