It seems that the average going rate at large retail stores, for 1600 XBox Live Marketplace Points Cards, is $25.00.  Both EB Games and GameStop have them for $19.99 online.  But beware - if you go online to GameStop, even if you enter the FREESHIPALL code to get free shipping - they add a Handling fee of $10... making it a much worse deal than just walking into Target and buying one.  Circuit City also has a 1600 card for $19.99 listed online, with local pickup available - hopefully there's no handling fee for that.

You can also just sit in your living room and buy 2000 points for $25 from Microsoft on your Live account. If I did the math right - never guaranteed with me, lol - the prices are the same for the EB/ GS and the MS (for 2,000 points), or .0125 per-point.

I also checked eBay, and very few people seem to be selling the point cards, and there were no better deals, as of this morning.  As always, patience is a virtue on eBay and you could make out there... or not.

If anyone sees a sale that is better than .0125 per point - please post here... thanks!  Tongue

EBs should have the 1600 point cards for $20 in store as well.

They are also $19.99 at Target - or at least they were a week or so ago.

I bought 1600 points at Target yesterday for $20+ tax; so it came out to 0.01365 per point.

Does buying points over Live incur state tax?

Not that I've seen, no.

Considering that these points are equal to money, as they are used for microtransactions within live, I don't think you'll find any deals on them.

The best place to buy is online from MS for a rate of 1 point for about 0.0125.

That makes a 400 point game worth $5 USD.  That's geometry wars, joust, etc...

Honestly, I'll really only be buying the live arcade games using points.  Anything else is just a waste, even the really small stuff like the icons that are 30 points, that's about 38 cents for something I could just as easily whip up in my PC and upload.  That is, if they allowed such things.

Can someone tell me how you get 'gold' on Live?  Mine balance is at zero and I have no clue how exactly I am supposed to get any.

'Gold' and microsoft marketplace points are the same thing.  For some reason the symbol for the marketplace points is G.  So in order to get that balance up, buy a 1600 points card at the store or buy marketplace points online using your CC.
