I wonder how much of an effect Fox's increasing reputation for canning good niche shows is having on the initial viewer count.  I know that's the reason I didn't watch Drive.

Same here.  After I got hooked on Day Break and they cancelled it I realized I was just frustrating myself.

Well, I enjoyed the three episodes of Drive that they aired, but I definitely anticipated this moment. :|

Day Break was actually on ABC, not Fox.

Well I suck.

It's ok, I still blame Fox for cancelling Day Break.  Just easier that way.

I think it would be friggin' awesome if after all these years they ended up releasing it as an EGA 2d sidescroller.

Honestly, I think I'd be more likely to pony up the $40 if they did do something crazy like that.

Any word on the sales numbers for this game?  For such an unmarketed niche game, I don't think they could've asked for better word of mouth.

Ohh, now I see.  The reason American Magikarps are popular is that he is one of a dozen or so pokemon that have alternate pokedex entries if you have a foreign version.  The list is:

Ekans
Pikachu
Psyduck
Ponyta
Staryu
Magikarp
Wobbuffet
Heracross
Sneasel
Teddiursa
Houndour
Wingull
Slakoth
Roselia

Foreign versions of these guys will let you see their description in different languages, so all of them will probably give you a good chance of getting a great JP trade.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the only way to set up trades or battles with friends is if you set up the meeting out-of-game.  We'll either have to plan things ahead of time or do a "anyone on?" shout out in a thread if we want to hook up with forumers.

I don't know if it's an intentional decision to make more people buy both games, but I think the Wii Pokemon coming out makes the online multiplayer much easier to do.

How exactly does the trading with Japan work?  I know you have to go to the GTS but exactly how do you do it?

You either find a Japanese pokemon already up for trade and give them the pokemon they're asking for, or you put one of yours up for trade and specify what you want in return.  In the latter case, it's not necessarily going to be a JP person that takes you up on your offer, but for now they're going to be the more active traders.

I'm not sure, but I think you'll increase your chances of an excellent Japanese trade if you give your pokemon a nickname.  I thought I heard that the JP version doesn't let them input English letters, so it's kind of a novelty for them to have an American pokemon.  Without a nickname, the critter's name switches over to Japanese in the trade.

Oh, and a public service announcement:  If you've gotten to the windmill area, there's a pokemon there that only appears on Fridays.

I just can't wait to see what'll happen when the development side of things catches up to the Wii's popularity.  For the rest of 2007 and into 2008, we're still just going to be getting titles from developers who were willing to develop for the Wii without knowing if it would be a hit or not.  Now that it's putting out ridiculous sales numbers, a lot more developers are going to jump on the bandwagon, and we won't see those games for at least another year.

And, just to make sure since you said you considered the option...don't buy a plane ticket to go visit the guy!

In the future, I'd recommend that you keep receipts for $500 transactions, remember that if a deal seems too good to be true it might be just that, don't send money to people who have just stolen money from you, and wait for more must-have titles to be released and/or a price drop before you buy a next-gen console. smile

If your choices are up/down, I'd still say blowing up into the PSU is better than going down against the flow of the rest of the fans.  If it can be mounted to point to the back of the tower, then yeah I'd agree that's the best.  It's a moot point in either case since it looks like the heatsink is heavy enough to just rip the CPU out of its socket. slywink

9751  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: How should I install my CPU fan? on: April 25, 2007, 12:53:57 PM
I think his question is a little different than you're reading.  The fan itself should be mounted as in the picture, so that it blows air into the metal.  But with this heatsink, the fan is perpendicular to the processor--you can see where the processor mounts on the bottom.  So the fan (assuming it fits in a case!) would either be pointing towards the floor or the ceiling.  Is it not possible for it to face the front or rear of the case?

I would hope the instructions would say something, but if the choices are up or down, I would guess that you'd want the air to blow up.  Most of my cases draw air from the bottom front of the case, and have the power supply blowing air out at the top back.  Pointing the heatsink blowing up seems to be the best way to keep the airflow smooth.

Also, found out that when you go to the global pokemon exchange for trading, you can only look up ones you've seen. That's mildly disappointing, since I haven't seen the ape starter yet so I can't even try to see what trades are up for it, but eh, whatever.
You're limited that way for the GTS trading, but if you've swapped friend codes you can trade any pokemon, including ones you haven't seen.  Once I hit the breeding area, I'll be happy to breed some turtle eggs or Pearl exclusives for anyone that wants 'em.

Just out of curiosity, how many of you folks are planning to link up your DS collection up to the Pokemon Battle Revolution game that's coming out on the Wii.  It sounds like when you go online, unlike Diamond/Pearl, PBR will let you battle random strangers instead of just people you've swapped friend codes with.

It's the first online Wii game, and if I'm reading things right, it'll even let you use your DS as a controller.  If you use the DS as your controller, most of the interface is moved there so that the main view on the TV is uncluttered.  Plus, how can you resist seeing that cute little penguin running around rendered in 3d?

A money order is not cash.  If it's cashed sure.. you're out the money, but you should still be able to get a record of who cashed it and where.  If it's floating around out there unclaimed, I believe it can be canceled.

Call Netbank.

Yeah, while I don't think you have any chance of getting the $500 back from the money order itself, you might be able to at least prove that it was cashed by the seller.  From there you could hopefully either get the PS3, or use the proof to invoke some of ebay's buyer protection whatevers.
9754  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Official "ZOMG Hi2u Pokemans Trading!!1!" Thread (Plus Impressions) on: April 24, 2007, 04:40:25 PM
I don't think the nicknames show up on the GTS.  Plus, if someone's really that bothered by the nickname they can just use the pokemon to breed a new one with the name of their choosing.

One last question for today...Is there a specific nature I should be looking for with my wild pokemon? I found a link that showed what each one does (http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/rsnatures.html), but I am not sure which is better to use in practice.
As far as the single player game goes, you don't have to worry about natures at all, the game isn't hard enough for them to make or break anything.

If you do want to use natures, for competition purposes or just to feel uber, you can use them to enhance your pokemon while degrading them in a stat you don't care about.  If you're training a pokemon that's already hopelessly slow, you can use a nature that decreases speed while improving something more important.  If you've got a pokemon that you're only going to give physical attacks, you can decrease the special attack stat without worry.

I'm not going to worry myself about it much until I start trying to breed my dream team.

It's cash, the equivalent to mailing a $500 bill in an envelope.  You would need the money order itself in order to cancel it.

That being said, I'm not looking on anything extra - no Gamefaqs, no "evolution charts", no "what Pokemon are best", etc.  I'm going in blind.  I hope that, going through the game this way, I don't just kill my chances at being competitive for online battles & otherwise.  But eh, we'll see.

You'll be just fine going in blind.  If you want to have some kind of uber online team later on, you can always go back and breed one after you beat the game.  Most of the real min/maxxing doesn't start till then anyways.

There's only a couple things I can think of that you could hurt yourself by going in without any idea how to play.  One, the TM moves you get can only be used once, so if you want one for someone specific later on you're out of luck if you've already used it.  (Although if it's on a male pokemon I think he can pass on the skill through breeding.)  And second, there's a handful of "legendary" pokemon that you'll only have one opportunity to capture.  These won't appear till the end-game, and they should be pretty obvious when you come across them.

Help me out here guys.  How exactly do I get my friend code for this game?  And how does the wireless work?

Thanks!

You can get your friend code downstairs in a pokemon center.  It's closed off in the first town or two, but opens up really early in the game.

As far as how the wireless online connectivity works, you can either go to...I think it's called the GTC, to trade to anyone online around the world.  Apparently you can get pokemon with crazy japanese character names if a JP person happens to take you up on a trade.  With the GTC, though, you put a critter up for trade and specify what you want in return.  You can only request pokemon that you have already seen.

Things open up with friend codes.  If you have each other as friends, you can battle each other, trade whatever you want, and even talk to each other via the built in DS microphone.  (X or some other button disables voice.)
