Okay, Nintendo reversed the A and B buttons.  At least I knew that A was next to B.

Out of curiosity, I scanned the button layouts on the video game controller family tree.  In addition to Nintendo reversing the natural order:

The TurboGrafx-16 controller has II to the left of I
The Jaguar has C, B, A (also: 'pause' to the left of 'option'...wtf?)

An HDTV mounted face up like a table, four racing wheels mounted around the edge, and an updated version of that old top-down Demolition Derby arcade game with the oil slicks and wrenches, connected over Live to other groups of four people playing at their own HDTV tables.

Back to the original, I am in chapter 2 and finding it much more difficult. Those stupid rock monsters have too high a defense for my hammer to damage. I am assuming I will get a new hammer soon, but am worried I might have missed it somewhere. I had to basically run from every fight with them until I reached the desert where now bandits are ganking me.

It's been a long, long time, but any chance the rock monsters flip upside down when you jump on them?

xbox 360-voted. I guess it's essentially the controller S from first xbox, but now their standard is wireless which I think is pretty cool.

It's more than just the addition of wireless.  The shape is more comfortable, the start & back buttons are moved to a more convenient location, the black and white buttons are moved to more useful bumper positions, and IMO the analog triggers are smoother as well.

Aside from the funky position of the left analog stick, I hate that they use shapes on the buttons instead of letters.  With letters, I can know instinctively that B is to the right of A.  With shapes, I just have to memorize them, and there's nothing instinctive about it.

Early in the morning would be ideal for me, but it's not really an option since I can barely even manage to get out of bed in time for work.  I try to work out as soon I get home from work, if I let myself settle in at all then my chances of heading back outside get pretty slim.

My schedule is to run 3 times during the workweek, try to squeeze in an additional cross-training day somewhere in M-F, and then do a long run on Saturday.

For me, Rock Band is so far ahead of GH3 feature-wise it's as if they came from the future and brought back the competitor to Guitar Hero 4.

I still don't see the problem that we know that the 60gb version is going away once stocks run out.  They're basing their entire negative opinion of Sony on the speculation that there'll only be the $600 price point left by that time.
Why do you keep calling this speculation?  This is what the President and COO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. told us.

"The $499 price adjustment that we did for the 60GB version for the American market--we're no longer in production for that product.  So, once that product is gone from the retailer's shelves, then we're back to the $599 SKU only.  So it's not like we have a two price strategy here in the US market."

Sony has a new model, probably with a new internal designation, in production.  They stop production on that already well overstocked PS3 60gb version, produce only the 80gb hardware.

If you look at how casually and simply Sony stated the discontinuing 60gb model with the emotion engine (which costs them more to produce, and actually has older controller designs) leaving the 80gb model (which has the EE removed and possibly includes the new rumble capable controller), it's likely that this is just internal hardware reshuffling.  Then the press misinterpreted it into yet another Sony negative press further fueling the rumor mill.  There's nothing saying what will happen when the 60gb runs out, just that when they do run out, there'll be just the 80gb on the shelf.

Also, look at the shelves, there's ample PS3s everywhere, and I suspect it'll last for more than a few months at the $500 price point.  Hell, you guys were making fun of how available the PS3 was, and now you're talking about how short lived the price drop will be once the PS3s run out?

There's no information about what'll happen after the 60GB is gone, just that there's the 80GB version out, that yes, currently costs $600.  However, the 80gb version isn't out yet, and probably isn't finalized since there's varying box art that says it's limited edition, that means not the main SKU.

There's some speculation about that they'll do, but that's being drowned out by people screaming bloody murder over nothing.  Could be with the cost savings from the removal of the EE from the 80gb model could allow them to drop that model to $500 come November, just in time for the holidays and Microsoft's inevitable 360 price drop.

Your defense of this move by Sony basically boils down to "they might offer the 80GB for $500 when the 60GB runs out," which people have already said would be one of the better next moves for Sony.  But that's just speculation.  What we have right here, right now, is a Sony representative telling us that "when the 60GB units are gone there will just be the $600 SKU."  That's not nothing.  That's stupidity.

i'm not really sure which game i'm more interested in at this point...both have unique selling points, but the straight-forward guitar playing will always be what interests me most.  while the drum aspect of Rock Band looks pretty cool, i'm just not sure that i'll be willing to pay for another specialized controller that will take up space in my apartment...

Even if you have no interest in touching the drums or the microphone--all you want is the guitar aspect--I still feel that Rock Band wins.  Even if you don't want to drum or sing, doesn't it sound cool to go online and play with a fellow GTer who does use the drums, and another GTer who's actually pretty good at singing?

But even further, if you totally take the drums and mic out of the equation, Rock Band brings the 5 extra fret buttons; a bigger, more realistic looking guitar; customizable avatars; the guitar toggle switch to change the sound; and (with the big IF they deliver on their promises and don't charge too much) loads more downloadable content.

I know I'm probably coming off as a fanboy, but to be honest when Rock Band was announced I was enormously skeptical and thought it would surely fail against Guitar Hero 3.  Frankly, I'm amazed at how much Harmonix has won me over, but quite simply they're doing everything right (so far.)

I think one "problem" with Rock Band is that everything I've seen is about the group experience of playing together.  That's great, but it's very rare that I have four people over at my place who want to play a music game with highly specialized instruments smile  Now Rock Band could change that, but at the moment, I'm not sure how much fun it will be to play all by your lonesome.

I do wish they'd say more about single player aside from saying that there's a "Solo Tour Mode" campaign for guitar, singing, and drums, but it seems like it would be really hard to screw up, especially since these are the guys who created Frequency, Amplitude, and Guitar Hero itself.  Is there any reason so far to think that the single player will be less fun than GH 1&2?

I agree, though, that a poor single player side would put a huge damper on my enthusiasm for the game.  That, and ridiculous DLC pricing.

In the "most anticipated 2007 games" thread, I saw a handful of people putting down Guitar Hero 3 but not Rock Band.  I myself am just completely blown away with how much Rock Band is upping the ante on the formula that there's absolutely no question which one I'd rather own.  Drums?  Four players?  More realistic looking guitars?  Online play?  Weekly downloads?  Entire albums for download?  For me the battle was over before it began.

So what's keeping you guys in the Guitar Hero camp?
