Hey, what's the deal with cars that can only be unlocked by achieving a certain level in a particular region?  If I pay the $100,000 to change regions, do I go back to level 1?  Can I win the reward cars you get for leveling up?  Are the cars you win for different series the same for different regions, or different?

I was annoyed at that at first, but it turns out to be a non-issue for most of the exclusives.  If you need be a certain level in a region to get that car, it seems to also mean that it is a reward car for reaching that level.  This means that you've got a good chance of someone selling that car for below cost on the auction house since they can't get any money sell their reward cars in-game.

For example, I was able to get two N.A. exclusive Dodge Vipers, each for a $40k buyout, on the auction house while the list price is something like $100k.

To the folks who've been in the beta for a longer period, is there a post on the official forums that sums up the "in the works" features or the "frequently requested" features?  I want to make a post in the feedback therad of my initial likes/dislikes and things that would be great to see implemented, but I don't want to just repeat things that have been asked for a million times, and I don't have the time to search through the past pages of their forum.

So, how much longer is the beta preorder going to last?

I thought someone said today was the last day.

Oh, and after spending one evening with the game...

I guess I can see how you could get a Kohan vibe from it, but my first impression was that it was Homeworld meets Conquest: Frontier Wars, with the army commander from Paraworld thrown in for good measure.

I'll post more detailed first impressions later, but I just couldn't stop playing last night.  Very glad I jumped on the pre-order.

It overheats too easily if it's sideways, and the drive dies if it's vertical. The 360 is just a broken console no matter how you position it.

Yeah, the deal makes warning flags go off, but it sounds like they got as good a deal as could be had with SOE.

I'm possibly even more disappointed with the mention of a Fall launch; I would think that a somewhat underdog game like this would do better to build up word-of-mouth during the summer doldrums.

I wish Farscry didn't have that pesky NDA to adhere to.

As for P:BR, I think I'll be out.  Looks like the best reason to play is to see your handheld pokemon fight on the big screen (I would like to see the DS connectivity), but you have to finish Pearl or Diamond before you can do that.  I'm on the second town.
I don't think you need to have beaten the game.  When P:BR imports from the DS, they're copied over but stay on both the DS and the Wii, so it doesn't affect your RPG campaign.

Another oddity is that you can only do standard 6v6 battles with friend codes exchanged; if you're doing random matches you're limited to 3v3 or 4v4.

The wiimotes don't sleep, so they can run through AA batteries pretty quickly even if they're just sitting on your coffee table.

don't they turn off when you hit the power button on them?

Pressing the power button on the Wiimote actually turns the Wii console off. If the controllers are left idle for a long period they do sleep. When you resume gameplay there's about a 2 sec pause while the Wiimote reestablishes connection. I can't remember if this feature is enabled by default, or it it needs to be turned on.

I was under the impression that while the blue lights turn off, the wiimote doesn't enter a true sleep state, which is why the batteries drain so much even during non-use.  Is that not the case?

So it looks like Pokemon Battle Revolution is coming out this week, anyone getting it?  I've got too many games in my backlog to pick it up myself, but if anyone here gets it I'm curious to hear how the Wii's first online game in the U.S. plays out.

What does the game offer anyway? Just full non-friend code online play of your DS game? Or does it offer some sort of single player component too?

I think there's a token single player getup where you try to beat some number of championships, but I think the meat of the game is meant to be in the multiplayer.  You get to upload and battle with your DS collection, use your DS as your controller, see your guys jump around in 3d, that sort of thing.  I think you can even upload your pokemon into your wii remote so kids can bring them over to their friend's house or whatever.

Just combat, by the way.  No RPG here.  Though I wonder if the huge sales of the Wii are going to get them to finally make a non-handheld pokemon rpg this generation.

1. Yeah, there are slots for the Gamecube memory cards (which you'll need to play the GC games anyway)
2. Don't need one
3. Classic controller is great, but the Wavebird works great too.  I prefer the classic controller myself.
4. Haven't tried them, but I don't see the need.
5. Don't own it, but if it works I'd probably get one myself.  The wiimotes don't sleep, so they can run through AA batteries pretty quickly even if they're just sitting on your coffee table.
6. Just a 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) wiimote, and a 2nd nunchuck if you want to do 2-player boxing.

However - and this is on me really  -  I also tend to associate the Sun-Skin post with the other one that is punctuated by rather slutty pictures (um... part of the title is Having Fun, I think?)  On that one, I got as far as the splayed naked woman on the car hood, and just wasn't much interested in visiting that thread again.  It is my own linking of the two - and disinterest in the Sunday WOMEN's Skin topic that has led me to conclude that the locker room isn't always for me.

Quote from: mytocles on June 15, 2007, 05:35:32 PM

Here is an exercise to try:  go to the This is Fun thread, locate the naked female splayed on the car hood - and show it to your wife, girlfriend, female co-worker, or sister.  Ask her what she thinks about a professional forum with pictures such as that.  I went to that site, thinking of finding some Fun Fotos... and I would have enjoyed going beyond that picture, if I hadn't been totally offended by it.  I am not a prude, that was not the issue for me. Some men will disagree, but I felt that the picture represented the whole "demeaning of women" gig. Yeah, I was in college when the whole Women's Libber thing happened, but many people - not just me - agree that women should be treated with more respect than that.  And people, men or women, who are disrespected, often enough, would likely not hang around for very long.

So we've got mytocles, a long time Gone Gold/Console Gold/Gaming Trend reader, who posts that she was so offended by a picture in the "This is Fun" thread that she didn't want to read past the first page.  So offended that when we're talking about the Sunday Skin posts, she recalls this car hood picture from another thread as a perfect example of a demeaning picture that could drive away someone such as herself.

And then someone goes and bumps the three year old picture up with the latest postings in the thread.

If people want to mock my arguments in this thread or in the latest Sunday Skin, fine, whatever, I can take it.  But I see the picture bump in the "This is Fun" thread as a big F.U. to mytocles, and anyone who might share her opinion.  As a forum we're saying that women should not only expect and tolerate the locker room mentality, but if they bring up something that's particularly offensive to them we're going to shove it in their faces?

If the forum considers this an acceptable way to treat not just a hypothetical female demographic, but an actual female forumer who's been an active poster for years, I guess I should start including myself in the demographic that's being driven away by the locker room mentality.

If Blu-Ray succeeds as a format, I doubt the PS3 will have anything to do with it.  It sounds more like Blu-Ray may succeed more out of backroom negotiations with key players (Blockbuster, movie studios, manufacturers, etc).  The only thing is, those deals are going to cut into any financial windfall Sony may reap from "winning"... kind of like the "even if they win they lose" console war they are currently engaged in.

If Blu-Ray movies are currently keeping pace with or outselling HD-DVD movies, and 1.4 out of the 1.5 million Blu-Ray players are PS3s, I don't see how you could argue that the PS3 had little to no influence.  If the 1.4 million PS3 owners on average buy just one movie each, the 0.1 million stand-alone owners would each have to buy 14 movies to have the same effect.

I was on a great exercise routine early this year, then slacked off for a few months.  I'm back on track now:

Strength training 2-3 times a week, alternating upper+core and lower+core, with a 1 mile jog on the treadmill as a warm-up.

Jogging 3-4 times a week, mostly 2-3 miles with one 4-5 mile "long run"

Swimming tossed in every now and then as cross-training.

My main focus now is working up my cardio health and gradually increasing my weekly mileage and so I can more easily go longer distances.  I've got my sights on a half-marathon in October.  I have a 12 week training schedule that I'm planning to follow that starts on July 17th with 3-4 mile runs on week one, so I'm ahead of schedule.

If you ever find yourself using the browser for more than novelty or a very quick trip to check your mail, let us know.
I use the Internet Channel on the Wii, and I have my regular PC on a desk just behind my couch, and a HTPC hooked to my TV that has a keyboard with a built in touchpad.

The Wii boots up faster than the regular PC, and it's easier to just grab the Wii remote on the coffee table than it is to go grab the HTPC keyboard that's next to the TV.  Besides that, the Wii browser's zoom function does a much better job of making things legible on my SD TV than simply enlarging the text on Firefox with the HTPC.  The Wii is also my preferred way to look up guitar tabs.  It's awkward to play the guitar at my regular PC, and the Wii does a better job at blocking the myriad of pop-ups on the tablature websites than Firefox.

I wouldn't want to type a post like this one with the Wii remote, but for typing URLs or a few words here and there into a search box it works great.  I mean, the Wii remote is pretty much equivalent to having a mouse.  Imagine if you had a picture of a keyboard on your screen and you had to use the mouse to point and click to spell out a URL.  Slower than a keyboard, for sure, but I'll bet you could click the word out pretty fast.

What's the real point here? And of course, why is Nintendo bilking you people out of 5$ is another good question.

The pointer works pretty well (the controller even does a slight rumble when you pass over hyperlinks).

And while it's of course nowhere near as fast as a real keyboard, pointing and clicking at an onscreen keyboard to type is loads faster than using a d-pad or an analog stick.
