One thing, I am having trouble with my WiiMotes being very jumpy.  I tried adjusting the sensativity and it isn't helping much.  I am sitting about 9 feet from my TV on my couch.  The sensor bar is on top of the TV, so it is about 5 feet off the ground.  I can't seem to find a way to sit comfortably on my couch and have the system pick up my movements.
Like Herpes said, make sure the edges of the sensor bar are facing forward without any part blocked.  If you're sitting a lot lower than the bar, and the bar is angled upwards or partially blocked by some lip or edge on the TV, the remote's might have a hard time seeing it.

Other than that, any windows or reflective surfaces behind or near the TV that could be reflecting light?  Any light sources near the TV like a lamp, light bulb, or the sun?  When you did the calibration, if you turn up the sensitivity do any other white spots appear?

If you want to get creative, see if it improves if you take the sensor bar down and instead put two tea light candles on your TV spaced a bit further out than the sensor bar edges were placed.

This is assuming that the price drop happens of course, but it seems like it will.

I believe the 3D0 dropped $200 just before its first birthday.

Saw it on Wednesday on a digital, but slightly smaller screen.  Gonna see it again tonight on a non-digital bigger screen.

Any numbers out yet on the movie's ticket sales?  Seems like they could really push out some big numbers since they're really pushing the "opening weekend" definition by starting on Tuesday.  When I release my own summer blockbuster, I'm going to have it be a 4th of July weekend opening with showings starting on Memorial Day.

Yeah, I saw a preview for this at Ratatouille.  It's live action with apparently real dogs.  Looks like crap.

Jason Lee is voicing Underdog as well, in a funny twist of fate.

I believe he was contractually required to participate in Underdog and Chipmunks as a way of adding more items to his Earl list.

Also, as for why people claim intersystem travel is impossible, it's because we currently know of no way to travel faster than the speed of light.  Seeing how scientists are currently working on "teleporting" data from one location to another, it seems that if such a thing is possible, that FLT travel would somehow be possible as well.
Our real-world "teleporting" still obeys the speed limit.

Does it?  I had thought it was instantaneous.  I'll have to read a bit more on it (I've only skimmed most stuff and said "wow that's cool", since they aren't transporting hampsters or anything).

This is where the "teleportation" label given to our real-life version of the phenomenon is very misleading.  The short version is that while the person at position B will be able to reconstruct something that was at position A, someone at position A has to call them on the telephone to tell them how to do it.

The slightly longer version:

George and his friend Tony first get two particles entangled.  George keeps his particle A in America, while Tony brings his particle B back to England.  George has a particle X that he wants to transport.  He entangles his original particle A with this particle X.  This destroys the entanglement between A and B, but leaves the two of them with four possible but unknown arrangements of particle A, B, and X.  George measures his A and X particles, letting him know which of the four arrangements they have, and thus learns what state Tony's B particle is.  George calls up Tony on the phone, mails him a letter, or sends a carrier pigeon to let Tony know.  Tony is then able to use the information to use his B particle to recreate the X particle over in jolly old England.  Viola!  You've got "teleportation," i.e., information transmitted without transferring any matter or energy.  Not quite as sexy as a Star Trek transporter beam, but still pretty cool.

Disclaimer:  I'm probably wrong in some way, this stuff makes my head hurt.

True or not?  I don't know.

What I do *know* or believe is that it is silly to think that in a Universe the size of ours, that we are the only living creatures in it.  That makes no sense and gives the human race WAY too much credit.

Agreed, but the vastness of the universe also makes it immensely unlikely that we and another sentient species will overlap in time & space.

If you want to be optimistic, I would say there's a chance in the next several hundred years--assuming we can maintain our technological growth without burning out our resources--of us discovering an alien civilization that did exist some millions of years ago in some star system hundreds of light years away.  In fact, in my own personal belief in how much sentient life there is out there (a lot), I could see us eventually reaching a point where we're using indirect means to discover traces of old distant civilizations with the same regularity we were discovering extrasolar planets in the first years of planet-hunting.

But being in the same time, and in the same place?  Not going to hold my breath.

I can't find official word, but I'm pretty sure this week's VC titles are:

Quote
Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES®, 1 player, rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Join Mario™, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad in an incredible fantasy world on a quest to save the day. This time, they have little more than vegetables to defend themselves with. Pick up items and throw them at your adversaries to clear levels in seven massive worlds. Even enemies can be picked up and tossed across the screen. Each character has a unique set of abilities: Luigi can jump higher and farther than any of the other characters, Toad can dig extremely fast and pull items out of the ground quicker than anyone and the princess is the only one who can jump and hover temporarily. This unique installment in the Mario series will keep you coming back for more.

Ecco: The Tides of Time (Sega Genesis, 1 player, rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): In this sequel to Ecco the Dolphin, everyone's favorite underwater hero must battle the Vortex Queen and her hive of drones. The wicked queen followed Ecco back to Earth from the future and quickly established her hive. It's up to Ecco to defeat this alien threat by navigating the depths of his side-scrolling world, solving puzzles and receiving help from his marine-mammal friends. When Ecco used the time machine to save his pod, he split the stream of time in two. He must now restore the rift before the world is permanently changed into a mechanical world, sucked dry by the Vortex.

DRAGON SPIRIT (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, rated E for Everyone – Mild Fantasy Violence, 600 Wii Points): A fantastic world of adventure unfolds in this vertical-scrolling shooter. Sealed away by the gods long ago, the Evil Demon of Darkness, Zawell, seeks to rise again and unleash a new reign of evil. The brave warrior Amur races to rescue Princess Alicia from the demon's wretched clutches. Amur takes the form of the legendary Blue Dragon and fights his way through the legions of monsters that await in the sky. Battle your way through eight different areas, using your Dragon Breath to bring down airborne targets and Fireballs to wipe out targets on the ground. Destroy flashing enemies and smash Eggs to uncover different kinds of power-up items. Boost your firepower by increasing the number of heads your dragon has, and defeat all the bosses as you make your way to Zawell's dark lair.

I've been hoping for Mario 2 for a while, so that's a sure purchase, and I think I might buy Ecco 1 & 2 in one fell swoop--never played the 2nd.

From GAF: "Stand in a dark room, torch held right up against the side of the 360. The new heatsink should be clearly visible between the CPU heatsink and the front of the 360. If there's a big gap and you can see the side of the DVD drive easily, there's no additional heatsink."

Online battles result in no post-battle stats and there's no reason to fight, as the game lacks any kind of leaderboards, tournaments, trophies or achievements. Unless you're doing it for the thrill of battle - which some players will be - there's literally no global competitive structure to encourage fights.

Talk about missed potential, jeez.  Is it that much of a stretch to think a ranking system would be a pretty good match for this kind of game?

I'm working on a reply to your post on the beta boards, but I'm kind of hoping a dev posts a hint of what direction they're going with on the culture war.  I'd rather suggest ways to improve on their concepts than to try and ask them to rebuild the culture battle from the ground up.

I think the "in a nutshell" version of what I'd envision is:

  • Culture war should be able to be an interesting game mechanic in and of itself-   It should be fun and strategic on its own.
  • Culture mechanic should have its fingers in many other game mechanics-  It shouldn't be an island; tie it to trading posts, military conquest, the economy, civilian oriented vs. military oriented planets, etc.
  • Balancing complexity is key- Too simple or abstracted and it feels tacked on, too complex and it draws too much attention from the rest of the game
I get the feeling they want this to be a combat oriented game, so it's it's a tough balance to make culture a compelling game mechanic without turning the game into Civilization in Space.

Broadcast Centers spread culture.  If your culture goes through an enemy planet it reduces thier income considerably and supposedly they will be or have implemented a system that with enough culture and enemy planet would become unloyal and revolt.

Culture was a great concept for Civ 4, but I'm curious how well it would work with the mechanic abstracted to a single building.  Instead of having a whole slew of construction options for a city that affect culture to different degrees (as well as having other effects), it seems like with Sins it just comes down to an arms race: if Player 2 builds a 2nd broadcast center, you build a 2nd broadcast center, someone builds a 3rd, other person also builds a 3rd.

If Player 2 and I have neighboring planets, and Player 2 builds a broadcast center on his planet that spreads its culture all the way to my planet, what happens when I build a broadcast center on my planet.  Will it push back Player 2's culture line until it reaches an equilibrium midway between our planets?  Or will he have an advantage for having spread his culture first?
9518  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Sins of a Solar Empire - Beta Musings on: June 27, 2007, 01:02:14 PM
Lockdown, did you ever figure out what good Broadcast Centers are?  The tutorial mentions them only briefly.  I *think* they help mitigate the income reduction for planets far from your capital, but I'm really not sure.  And what does it do to enemy planets it runs over?  Whatever their purpose, the spreading colored lines sure look purty.

And how about Trade Centers?  They increase income, but is there a way to see how much?  Do I need two of them for a trade route to be established, or do the trade routes go between mines and Trade Centers, not from Trade Center to Trade Center?

Ill be making a gameplay video of beta 2 around this weekend, id just like to know what some of you prefer the videos to be, like, the length and resolution. Those 2 will ofcourse change the file size and length for each part.

Are anyone interrested in a fullgame length video, that will last for about 2-3hour or so. Or would it be better, just to show like an hour and then skip like an hour, and so on, until the game is finished?

Personally, I don't think I have the time to watch a playthrough for a solid 2-3 hours, but I would be very interested to see a collection of videos that show the flow of a single game.  In my first playthrough, it was a bit hard to know how I should go about balancing resources between territory expansion, military construction, infrastructure, and research.  Seeing an experienced player go through a game would be very informative.

Something like a video version of Sulla's Walkthrough series that he did during the development of Civilization 4 would be awesome.  Sort of take the viewer through key moments of the game, with brief updates on the "state of the game" as you progress through the war.  Sulla's walkthrough told me more of what I wanted to know about the game than any preview or interview.

I'm not sure how you would do it entirely via gameplay videos with no supporting text or voiceovers.  Perhaps each time you fast-forward in the campaign you could pan over the whole map to show how things have progressed, pantomiming with the mouse cursor to show what developments you are reacting to.

The following is the post I'm going to make over on the official beta boards:

Feature wishlist after a 3 hour first run

After having my willpower break down from some great word-of-mouth, I downloaded the game for the first time last night and put in a solid few hours.  Really enjoyed my first stab at the game, and ended up staying up later than I should have on a work night.  That's always a good sign for a game.

My thoughts after my initial run, and some features I would've liked to have had during that playthrough:

  • Tutorial Navigation - After finishing a tutorial session, have the game return to the tutorial selection screen rather than the main menu

  • Tech Tree Icon Shapes - The tech tree was a shock to the senses.  I love having an expansive tree with many options, but it took me a long while to parse out what my different options were.  What would be great is to have distinctive icon shapes for different types of upgrades.  If I'm looking for ship prototypes, I look for square icons.  If I'm looking for weapon upgrades, I look for triangle icons.  Defensive upgrades, shield shaped icons, and so forth.  This would be a huge help both for initially learning your way around the tree, and for quicker navigation after you've gotten the hang of the layout

  • Link Between Construction Menu and Tech Tree - On a related note, it would be nice to have the construction UI have shortcuts to the tech tree.  One of the first things I wanted to do was unlock various ships so I could try them out.  As it is I had to look at a greyed out ship, remember the name, head over to the tech tree, and hunt icon by icon until I found the ship.  It would be great if all I had to do was mouse over the greyed construction icon, click "find research path," and be brought to the tech tree with both the ship prototype highlighted and the prerequisite path lit up.

  • Tech Tree Options Specific to Ship Type - Also on that train of thought, although the tech tree lists what ships are affected by each upgrade, it would be nice to select a ship from the main interface view, and click "show research options" and be brought to the tech tree with all research options related to that ship highlited.

  • Multi-System Guard Orders for Ships - On the map I played, I set up a "front line" planet that had a chain of two other planets only accessible via that front line planet.  To combat pirates or enemy scout ships that get past the front line to head to those two other planets, instead of having static defenses or forces on those two systems, or manually sending forces to chase after them from system to system, it would be great if I could just tell a group of frigates to guard all three planets.  They would stay parked at the front line where I put them, but would continue to chase any enemies through to the other two systems.  After combat, they would return to their initial spot at the front line.

  • Mining Icon Spacing in Mid-Level Zoom - When zoomed in all the way, mining asteroids have no icons.  If you zoom out a bit, icons appear for either metal or crystal.  If you zoom out a bit more, the icons disappear again.  The problem is, at that mid-level zoom which is the only place the mining icons appear, the mines, and thus the icons, are right on top of each other and nigh impossible to discern from one another.  Since at that zoom level there's a lot of empty space around the planet, and little need to know the exact placement of the mines around the planet, I would propose that the mining icons appear nicely spaced to the side of the planet icon.  This would make them readable, and provide the same information without interfering with any other UI information.

  • More Complete Tool Tips - The pop-up tool tips that are there are great for a first time player, but as of now there's some key information on the main screen that does not have a pop-up.  It looks like most of the buttons are covered, but some of the non-button information could use the pop-up treatment as well.  I think it was the numbers at the bottom of the screen, just left of middle, that I wished I had an info box for.  It didn't take long to make the connection and realize they were HP/Shields/Antimatter numbers, but anything that helps a new user just "pick up and play" is a good thing.

  • Ship Movement in Battle - Purely an aesthetic thing, but it would be nice if the bigger ships moved around more during battle.  As-is it seems like they plop themselves down for the fight, only moving if they need to get their weapons in range.  For simple eye-candy reasons, it would be great if the frigates, cruisers, and capital ships were slowly moving around during the battle -- the way you'd expect to see in some kind of sci-fi movie.

  • Placement of "Zoom to Mouse Cursor" Option - I had read that the game had the ability to zoom to where the mouse cursor was placed, and that was one of the first things I looked for in the game options.  And kept looking.  It wasn't until a while later that I found the toggle on the main UI.  I'm not sure I see the toggle as so important it deserves its own button on the UI, but if it is needed there, how about having a toggle in the options menu to set what the default is for the "zoom to cursor" toggle.  It just seems logical to have it grouped with the other control options for the game.

  • Income Rates in Plain Sight - My memory is getting fuzzy now, but I seem to remember that you can only see your income rates for coin, metal, and crystals by mousing over your stockpile numbers.  It would be great if you could set it to show the income rates on the main UI right there next to the stockpile amounts.

  • Team Color Selection - Well, seems a bit anticlimactic to end on such a minor change request, but when choosing teams for a skirmish, it would be great if instead of clicking on my faction icon to change my team color, I could instead click to bring up a drop down menu of all the colors and simply click on the one I want.
.
That's all I can think of for now, I'll save the general gushing about the game for another post.  Suffice to say, I'm extremely impressed at first glance and am very much looking forward to another round with the game tonight!
