Tried to sneak in a few minutes to play, and I'm already in trouble.  I have a hard enough time naming one character in RPGs, let alone name a guild and every member within.  And making me choose a name before a character portrait?  That's just mean.

I've been on the fence as well, but if I happen to come across a copy on my lunchbreak today I think I might just jump in.

Aaand there was one copy left at lunch.  I'm a sucker for old school, how could I resist.

It'll be interesting to switch from playing Pokemon, a dungeon-romp lite, to a good old fashioned put hair on your chest adventure.

https://secure.rubiks.com/lvl3/index_lvl3.cfm?lan=eng&lvl1=commun&lvl2=cbeclb&lvl3=clbsol#

If you really want to learn, I recommend starting with this beginner method, which is more or less what I use.

This will get you solving consistently with very little memorization to do.  Plus, unlike some of the methods on the rubiks.com website, this beginner method can easily scale into the more advanced methods.
9488  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Accomplishment of one of my greatest challenges on: May 21, 2007, 01:36:42 PM
Solving a Rubik's Cube is much more methodical, and much less "figuring out" than people think.  It really makes no difference how much you mix up the cube beforehand.

This is, more or less, the most standard method, the one that I learned a couple years ago when I got annoyed with not knowing how to solve these things.

Step 1: The Bottom Cross
-Simple enough to figure out on your own.  Just choose a side to be the "bottom," and align the four sides on the bottom to match up correctly with the bottom color and the side center colors.  This forms a cross in the bottom layer.

Step 2: Corner and Side Pairs
-There are tricks to make this go faster, but this step is still possible to reason out on your own.  Making sure you don't permanently disrupt the pieces in step 1, match up the four corners of the bottom layer as well as the mid-layer pieces above them.  At first it might be easier to put the bottom corners in first, and then match up the mid-layer.

Step 3: Algorithms
-The more algorithms you memorize, the fewer steps it will take for you to finish the top layer.  There are different approaches you can take.  Here's what I have memorized and what they do:
  • 3a) Orient the top layer sides to form a cross, making them correctly oriented but not placed.  (2 short algorithms)
  • 3b) Position the corners, making them correctly placed but not oriented (1 algorithm)
  • 3c) Orient the corners, may take two steps (1 algorithm, and its inverse)
  • 3d) Position the sides (1 algorithm)
Viola!

With just 4-5 algorithms memorized, I can solve a 3x3 Cube in about 2 minutes.  If I took the time to learn about 40 more algorithms, I could combine some of the steps in #3 and bring my time down under 60 seconds, with practice down to 30 or less.  I'm happy with 2 minutes.

Bulbapedia seem to be the main fan wiki.

Both the fighting pokemon and the EXP Share pokemon will gain full EVs.

EV... EV... I must be missing something here. Care to explain to this n00b of the newer Pokemon games?

They actually existed in the original games, but people hadn't yet deconstructed the hidden game mechanics.

Short version:  Every pokemon that you kill gives Effort Values, or EVs for certain stat(s).  When you kill a Bidoof, for example, he gives everyone involved in the fight one EV in hit poitns.  You can get EVs for any stat.  Also, the various stat increase vitamins you find in the game give you 10 EVs for their associated stat.  (There are limitations on how much you can use vitamins.)

For every 4 EVs you get in a stat, you get one extra stat point increase in that stat the next time you level up.

This is why, in the old games, pokemon you raised yourself would be more powerful than wild ones of the same level.

Restrictions:
Cap of 510 total EVs
Cap of 252 EVs for a specific stat

There are items that can make you gain EVs faster, as well as the helpful contagious "Pokerus" disease that you can catch.

You can safely ignore this game mechanic if you want, just know that your pokemon are getting extra boosts the more you use them.  I certainly didn't pay attention to them for the main storyline.  For competition, or personal desire for min/maxxing, using EVs to strategically increase certain stats can give you a big edge.

Is it better to level up all of my Pokemon at the same time, or can I get away with uber leveling one, and then playing catch-up?

I'd try to keep all your Pokemons in the same general level. That way they're still useful if you have to switch to them (for example - if you fight something your favorite Pokemon can't deal much damage to), or if you want to switch out your current main due to facing something that'll seriously put the hurt on (its weakness).

At the start you're ok with only keeping 3-4 levelled.  It takes a bit before you encounter some of the other useful types.  I remember wanting a psychic type and it took a while before I found Bronzong to fill that slot.

I like to stick with more or less the same team through the whole game, but I know some people fairly regularly swap in new pokemon they come across, since the wild ones are typically around the right level.

I also kept an evolved Bidoof through the whole game to carry my bags, err, my HMs.  He can learn almost all of them, so it's easy to turn him into a swiss army knife.

I would also recommend you find a Starly to have in your team.  I made the mistake of leaving him out of my team, and I was really hurting for a good flying type in the end-game.

I can get you a Palkia from the GTS.  It'll likely be Japanese with a Japanese name, but other than that it'll work just fine.
Just to warn you, you'll also only have one chance to capture the three legendary psychic guys that live in the lakes.
I decide to replay the game, but I'm going to play Pokemon Diamond first and transfer some of my better pokemon from the Pearl then later replay Pokemon Pearl. Also ordered Pokemon Fire Red, Leaf Green and Emerald. Couldn't find Ruby or Sapphire anywhere so I guess I'm not going to be able to complete the collection of the Pokemon games of GBA and DS era.
You played through Pearl, now you're going to play through Diamond, then Pearl again, then 3 GBA games?  And I thought I was crazy for planning to play just Leaf Green and Emerald after Pearl!

If you change your mind, it's really no bother getting you a Palkia from the GTS.  I was able to get myself a Dialga without much fuss.  You're so close to the finish and there's a lot of fun to be had after you beat the Elite Four.  I do a daily round of checking the GTS, the Lotto, the Swarm-of-the-day, and the Mansion offering, plus I'm still working through the huge island in the northeast that opens up.

And don't sweat not having Ruby & Sapphire.  From the exclusives list I count a grand total of two pokemon that can't be found in Emerald: Zangoose and Lunatone.  If you really wanted to be complete, I don't think it would be that hard to find someone online to trade for those two.

The ability to trade online is such a huge addition to the game.  You don't have to complete your collection in a vacuum anymore!

The game does a good job of gradually introducing you to the game mechanics, so for the most part you can just jump right in.  Just make sure to set up a diverse range of types in your team, print out a type matchup chart until you get the hang of it, and feel free to ask any questions!

I'm still chipping away at the end game trying to fill my collection, so if there's any pokemon you hear about that you want in your team, feel free to ask and I'll check if I can breed you one.
9506  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: HEROES - 5/14/07 on: May 15, 2007, 02:35:50 AM
Well, in the future from the "Five Years Gone" episode, Sylar does not explode.  Peter does, but everyone thinks it was Sylar.

In the current timeline, it could still go either way.

Sylar does think he himself will blow up, so to answer your question:  Sylar is new to this power, maybe he doesn't think that he could get hurt in the explosion.  He can make little controlled radioactivity bursts in his hands without his skin melting off, so maybe he is indeed immune.  Even Ted, who had the powers for a lot longer than Sylar, didn't know what would happen if he blew up.  Earlier Ted said something like, "I don't know what would happen if I was shot, do you?"

Actually, now that I think about it, in the "Five Years Gone" timeline, Peter never went to save Clare, so he didn't have her regeneration.  Since we know for sure that he was the one to blow in that timeline, I guess that means that the exploder is safe.
