I cannot promise that.  I do what the fish says.

If anyone's still comparison shopping HOTAS options, I went back and forth a ton between the X52 and the CH Products options, and ended up deciding on CH Products.  In general, CH seems to have a better reputation for hardiness compared to the X52.  Saitek stuff gets some "I've never had a problem" reviews along with "XYZ broke after 1/3/12 months", whereas CH gets almost entirely "it's worked for 5/10/20 years flawlessly" reviews.

The big omission on CH is that there's no yaw twist on the stick, but that's also one of the first points of failure on the X52.  I mapped yaw left/right to buttons on the throttle, which works for me but may make others unhappy.  In the CH's favor, it has a thumb analog stick on the throttle which is fantastic for the lateral thrusting in Elite.  Point of preference, CH's throttle moves directly forward/back instead of arcing over an axis like the X52.

In the game's current state, space trucking is way more profitable than pirating or bounty hunting or any kind I combat profit. To escape from combat, you can disable flight assist and hit afterburners to maintain afterburner speed indefinitely, and then you can reenter hyperspace before the interdicting ships even get close enough for your sensors to identify. While I'm building up cash with my Hauler, I'm not even flying with a weapon installed.

As for the starter ship viability, definitely choose your fights carefully. Cobras are probably too much, especially if they outnumber you. Sidewinders are doable, and you can definitely take on whatever those small patrol ships are called. You can also look for conflict zones (choose a faction to side with on the right panel) and then do a battle that's not everyone out to get just you.

If you get enough money for some upgrades, gimballed weapons are great for beginners since they give you such a wide zone for accurate targetting.

TiLT, how big a difference does the Rift's varying pixel density have on text legibility?  If you turn your head away from a texty instrument panel but keep your eyes set on the text, can you notice the text getting chunkier/blurrier?

Well, TrackIR is on its 5th hardware version release, so one would hope it'd be a wee bit more polished than prerelease prototype hardware & software.

I had a bit of trouble with Grobbulus and Gluth in the Construct wing.  Definitely a bigger challenge than the last wing.

For Grobbulus I used my druid deck that I use for when I get the "Only the Mighty" quest.  It's filled almost entirely with beefy 5+ cost minions and so Grob's hero power doesn't affect them much.  I put all my "gain a mana crystal" cards in the deck and try to be sure to get some in the mulligan, that way I can still play the beefy minions fairly early in the round count.

For Gluth, my favorite Paladin deck is already almost entirely made up of 1 health minions, so that works out really well.  Divine shield also comes in really handy.  If you have a Murloc deck, I'd bet that would work pretty well against Gluth also.

What makes this situation so much worse than all the timed exclusives we saw in the PS3/360 era?

I think that what has made this most offensive for people is

1. It was a game whose predecessor appeared on all consoles and was expected to be the same
2. The crappy doublespeak they used to announce it

It was really a problem of their own making.

Offhand I can't recall a sequel from last generation that was exclusive (timed or otherwise). Bayonetta 2 is the closest example and that's a very different story.

I think TiLT is right that we may not actually have ever had this situation in the previous generation.  I could've sworn we did, but all the titles I'm remembering are turning out to be ones that really did have to have extra work done to get ported over to the later system.

Which ones are those? As I said, I can't recall any similar situation to what we're seeing right now.

I'm finding it supremely hard to google for it, other than DLC timed exclusives.  Does Bioshock count?   It's really hard to filter out games that had to have extra work done to be ported to the second system.

Ninja Gaiden 2 seems to be a real example.   What about Bioshock?

There's so much money to be had in cosmetic game items these days, it's hard to fault a dev for opening the doors for whales to hurl money at them.  Hell, they could probably charge $10 for hats to put on your spaceships and have a line around the block.  In retrospect, the horse armor DLC seems to have actually been ahead of its time.

As long as they keep the pay upgrades cosmetic and avoid any kind of pay-to-win, I'll be content, though I guess I could see myself getting a wee bit grumpy if there was no in-game way to get a visual upgrade to your ship (at release, that is).

You'd think after their XBox One launch with all the bad publicity they caused themselves, they would stay far far away from creating more.  I mean they just earned a lot of goodwill back lately, and now, in my eyes, they are back where they started

I think they underestimated how transparent their move would be to the public in today's age of information.  Their hope was probably that we'd all say "Oh wow!  The XB1 gets all the best games first!  I love XB1!" instead of "Oh wow!  MS paid a lot of money to screw over everyone else!  I hate MS!"

Spoils

Season 5 was easily the best season of the show's run. Can't imagine having had to wait a week between episodes.

I'm not a BB nuthugger as I think the first two seasons were pretty mediocre. However, when Gus came on the scene things really started picking up.

More spoilsies

Did you know that the Gus character wasn't even part of the original plan?  Tuco was supposed to be the main bad guy for a longer stretch, but the actor had to leave the show because of a conflict with other stuff he was filming.  They invented Gus to be a bad guy as opposite to Tuco's personality as possible, and they liked him so much they kept the character going.

I'd be more tempted to splurge if the thing had some resale value, but by the time I want to sell the devkit2, no one will want it because the release version will be imminent, not to mention Oculus is bringing down their wrath on any devkits they see showing up on ebay.

So I'll just have to pace impatiently every day until the release version comes.

Is PAX Prime low on boardgames?  PAX East practically has a football field dedicated to it.  I had a lot of fun just wandering around to different "teach this game" tables.

I find it interesting that the second house looks cookie-cutter to some of you.  I don't think I've ever seen a house in California that looks like that, and there's definitely nothing like that in New Mexico.  While I do like house #1 better, I like house #2's stacked porch & balcony, and the sideways garage is neat.

Kids don't need to know anything about our versions of all these rebooted franchises to be into them.  The toy sections in stores are exploding with TMNT stuff right now, plus there was an animated series in the 2000s and a new CGI series that started up more recently.

If that doesn't happen, I fear for humanity.

The age 6-18 demographic is going to flip at these reviews.  No way they're going to repeatedly ask their parents to take them to the movie now, not even if all their favorite tv shows get hammered with commercials for the movie and for tie-in toys.   icon_wink

TiLT, all you need to do is ease up on making it sound like you think your opinions are the infallible laws of the universe.  Go with "here's why I'm extremely skeptical" instead of "I'm 100% sure you're wrong, Bullwinkle, and I am going to make you see it my way or make you cry in pain, whichever comes first."  You very well may be right on every point, but if you say "I am SO fucking right it hurts, and omg won't you just see how right I am" you're not going to be as convincing as you would if you'd just state your thoughts and reasoning and let them speak for themselves.

But on the other side, one time we visited friends that live in a lovely house in Winthrop, a lovely seaside community that also happens to be about 100 feet  below the approach path for Boston's international airport.  Idyllic peaceful beachside community for a few minutesRAOOOARGH GIANT AIRPLANE OMGZ.  We wanted to get the hell out of there after the first plane but everyone who lived there swears they no longer noticed the planes at all.

As for the Activision skepticism, I'll throw out a $1 bet that they're thirsty for the adventure game money they're seeing come through Kickstarter and they do some kind of crowdfunding approach for old Sierra games.

I think part of the problem is I'm emotionally invested in house one because I love the history behind it and the fact that one main rebuilt it as a labor of love

If you love house 1 so much that our recommendations of house 2 don't feel right, there's a chance you do love house 1 enough to overlook its downsides.  You're the only one who can know for sure.  Really think long and hard before you go with it, though.  It's super easy to get emotionally attached to a house and not see clearly.

I had some similar struggles when I got my own house last year. There were some I came across that were "just perfect, if only ____ was different," but as much as we wanted them, the ____ really wasn't something we could be happy with in the long run.

One more thought for you, are you sure you don't want to go with house #3, which you have yet to see?  Can you wait a bit longer to find a structure you love as much as #1 placed on a location you like as much as #2?
79  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Buying a House. Stuck on the Final Decision. Advice? on: August 08, 2014, 12:59:47 PM
Get #2

I like the house itself on #1 better, but location and neighborhood is everything. I also lived a year in an apartment overlooking the tracks to Boston's Green Line above ground train, so the train thing ruled out #1 instantly for me.

This would be a tougher decision if the house on #2 was far below #1, but house #2 looks pretty fantastic too.

Are JWs discouraged from interacting with non-JWs?  I had a good friend for most of my K-12 life who was a JW, and when he graduated high school he moved to NYC to the JW headquarters and pretty much cut off all contact with all of his friends.

Yup. That was the reason that I was starting to avoid this forum, for example. I feared I was getting too close to you bunch of heathens. We're frequently encouraged to look at non-JWs as "acquaintances" and not "friends." When I was in 2nd grade I even told a kid that I wasn't his friend because he wasn't a JW. If you have "worldly" friends you're kind of ostracized.

Is there a switch at age 18 or something? For his school years, he made friends like any other kid. The no birthday party thing was pretty much the only thing that made him stand out a bit. His JW parents were also super friendly and welcoming to all us non-JW friends.
