They added a couple more benefits to getting the game in beta instead of at release.

Here's the list, new additions in bold.

• Your very own Eagle fighter ship docked in a secondary location in-game
• Exclusive pack of ship paint jobs
• A ‘day one’ ship decal
• A digital players guide
• A digital concept art book
• Plus loads more digital goodies to be announced over the coming weeks.
• Plus an automatic permit to visit Sol or anywhere in the Solar system without having to first earn a reputation with The Federation.
• 25% off in-game ship insurance for life to all our Beta backers
• free access to one of the 5 new ships when it’s released!

The discount on ship insurance is actually pretty significant.  Insurance is the way you replace your ship if you blow up, and the game currently has you pay the cost immediately after you blow up, so you have to keep some cash reserve always on hand.  The 25% off would mean that you would just always be able to play with less cash reserve and have more money put into your cargo or upgrades or whatever.

8 days left to get into beta if interested.

Should have played coop with us pug, you jumped the gun imo.  Played about five hours with mikagami last night and had a blast, a nice lag free stress free blast

Coop would've been fun, but without fun regular multiplayer I don't think it'd be enough to keep me from selling while the selling is good and while there're so many other games coming out.  Ended up selling it for a buck more than I paid, so the universe basically paid me a dollar to play through the single player campaign.

Sold mine this week after finishing the campaign.  Single player was a lot of fun.  Good villain, good set pieces, fun weapons/gizmos/vehicles, and with only a handful of frustrating moments.  I especially enjoyed the way you get to play the last few missions.

Multiplayer is a damn shame, because it's almost something I'd love to play.  Fix the lag issues and fix the spawning system and you're most of the way there.  The harder-to-fix issue is that I think most of the maps aren't really set up all that well to handle this level of mobility.  Too small or too many paths or something.  There's never any feeling of a front line, even in Domination mode; it's just a bunch of people bouncing around in an open arena.

I've been contemplating on buying a Nexus 9 but every time I get close to pulling the trigger I can't find one good reason I'll use it above my phone or my current 4 year old Win 7 laptop which is my primary couch machine.

So how do you use or tablet?

In addition to an iPad I have a Macbook Air which is almost as small and light as an iPad.  I almost always use the iPad over the Macbook for couch web browsing.  It's just plain more comfortable and easy to use a tablet instead of a laptop unless you're typing up something really long.

I also play Hearthstone regularly and can do so on either device.  The only reason I'd ever play it on the laptop over the iPad is if the iPad battery is dead.

I think I'm going to pass on this one and pick it up later when it has dropped in price and my backlog isn't so full. It may be a "good" game, but this holiday is packed with "great" games.

It's currently near-free at Target if you do the buy 2 get 1 free and sell two of the games.

It's not just the support classes that are going to be non-twitch.  They've said that a lot of the ultimate moves are going to be more about positioning and timing than any sort of mouse aiming skills.

PC only? Consoles too? Can't find any info on platform.

I believe they said PC Only at first.

They're also making references to how they want to keep system specs reasonable, so yeah, I think PC only.  I hope console versions aren't far behind -- controllers are so much easier on me as far as repetitive stress these days.

My experience is the same as yours. If they don't make some announcement about addressing the lag issues soon, I'll probably sell this as soon as I finish the campaign. On the plus side, I haven't enjoyed a CoD campaign this much in a long time.

In case anyone's only been loosely following the game at this point, this should be a day 1 instabuy for anyone who's ever enjoyed Elite/Privateer style space sims.  The game is a blast even in its current state, and the devs have been continually adding new great features and content at an aggressive rate.

if you're having trouble hitting things that are AI, it's definitely you.  Keep in mind that Destiny had some of the most severe aim assist I've ever seen

I agree about Destiny aim assist, but I was having trouble making shots in that shooting gallery I know I could make in pretty much any other console FPS.  Maybe I was indeed just Pulling a Teggy™ and accidentally trying to shoot through cover.

I see people on my friends list playing multiplayer all the time -- are you guys really not experiencing controller-throwing rage amounts of lag?  Every time I try to play I get at best a couple minutes of play before some frustrating lag encounter.
I don't put much stock in the signal strength icons if that's what you're going by. I've encountered some lag, but nothing that makes me crazy.
I'm talking about things like emptying a full magazine into someone's back only to have them casually turn around and kill me instead, then seeing the kill cam and finding the server thinks I only landed one bullet.  I even tried going full-bore DMZ on my router just to make sure it wasn't some lingering NAT issue, but it didn't seem to make a difference.

So then I moved to single player and got to Kevin Spacey's shooting gallery.  Is the aiming or gunshot timing really weird in this game?  I was having trouble hitting the targets that were slowly moving left to right.  It would look like my reticle was right on top, but nope, miss miss miss.  (This was when using the Atlas single fire pistol).  It's really frustrating going from being able to get headshots on moving player targets jumping erratically in the air in Titanfall or Destiny to not being able to hit a predictably moving slow AI target even in the chest.

How do you do a non-speed reload? I assume it's with a single X press, but I was doing that last night and still losing the rest of the ammo left in my magazine.

Huh, very weird.  There was at least this official word that the game "will support" dedicated servers.

Has anyone done much tweaking to the autoaim settings?  It seems like there are a few more options than you usually see, and with the default settings I kind of feel like the aiming speed gets way too crazy slow when aiming down sights.
61  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare on: November 05, 2014, 07:27:33 PM
Lag made it unplayable for most of my attempts to play multiplayer, but I did enjoy the beginning of the single player campaign more than I expected to.  Can we just put an end to peer-to-peer for console multiplayer?  Why aren't we using the unlimited and unfathomable power of Azure or whatever?

But assuming they improve the lag issues, I think the spawn system may kill this iteration for me.

I just spawned, so I should have time to shoot down a UAV.... nope, I'm dead.  Someone on me already.
My team just can't seem to secure a second point.  It's hopeless.  Oh wait no, 3 of us spawned on Bravo.  Guess we'll cap it.
Oh look, an enemy spawned 20 feet in front of me, right before my eyes.

I do like what I see so far with the weapons and gizmos, though.  Hopefully my gripes about spawn system are just me getting used to the new maps or something.

Got CoD due to arrive in the mail today and I'm going in with delightfully low expectations. The MS sale on it means I can likely recoup 100% of the cost if it turns out I dislike it as much as the last one, but if they managed to get it right this time I'll be happy to have a new multiplayer game as I start to hit my Destiny burnout point.

Also looking forward to reading Harvest Moon impressions, but I probably won't be picking that one up right away.

64  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC] Heroes of the Storm on: November 03, 2014, 04:41:57 PM
For what it's worth, the official word is that they're still just inviting at random in each batch.

You're not missing out on a ton in it's current state, though.  The gold income is the slowest its ever been, the talent gating for your first few matches with every hero makes it a lot less fun to try out new heroes, and they just plain haven't come up with anything yet for leveling up your gamewide account from 15 through to 40.  The game was far more enjoyable in the spring and early summer than it is now.

Looking closer, there are actually two new strikes being added, but one is going to be a Playstation exclusive until the year two-thousand-and-everyone-is-done-playing-this.

Isn't one of the strikes already timed on PS4 too.   Has that made it to XB1 yet? I believe it was Dust Palace (one of my favorite strikes too.)

Dust Palace, one of the multiplayer maps, and various pieces of equipment are Sony exclusive until late next year.

Thorn is absolutely amazing, you are quite mistaken.

It's very slow to fire damage isn't terrific, and it's very slow to reload which is a problem when as it only 6 in the cylinder...

If you haven't unlocked the DoT effect yet, you're not experiencing it at its best.  I think it's just 2 headshots or 3 bodyshots to kill with the DoT, but it can fire those 2-3 shots faster than other high impact hand cannons.  If you don't quite get the kill, the DoT (while active) stops their shields from regenerating and the DoT damage numbers float up from behind cover so you know exactly where they are.  That means if you both take damage and hide, when the fight resumes you'll have full health faster and you'll know exactly where your target is sitting.

To help with the the reload speed, I've been making sure to keep an item equipped that speeds hand cannon reload.  I think it'd also work well to equip it as a Hunter Gunslinger so you could use the skill for fast reloads after headshots.
