How well does your right eye see up close?  Since the VR screen is going to be just a few inches away from your eyes, even if something is very distant in the virtual game world, your right eye will only have to focus on an actual object that's just those few inches away.

This isn't true, which might sound crazy. There's a lens in front of each eye that bends the light so that it hits your eyes straight on. As far as your eyes can tell, what you're looking at is way off in the distance. Your ability (or lack of) to look at objects up close doesn't come into the picture.

If the display screen just showed nothing more than "Hello World", just how far would you say the lens would shift the apparent distance?

edit: Huh. Now I'm really confused. Poking around the internet, I see some people say the lenses let you focus all the way out to infinity, while others say they can use the Rift without glasses despite being extremely nearsighted.

I'm particularly interested in knowing how this will work since my wife has even worse vision than Zinfan.

I would like to try out a set if only because my right eye won't focus better than 20/200 right now so my vision is primarily left eye dominant.  I figure this could be a real issue when you need to look at separate screens in order to get the VR experience.

Even if your right eye didn't contribute to your vision in VR, I think the experience would still be pretty great for you.  Even if you have limited depth perception in VR, it's not going to be any less depth perception than you see in real life.  The VR immersion comes not just from the 3d, but from having the virtual world be wherever you look, and tied 1:1 to your head movements.

Another game I'm glad I held off buying smile

Holy wow.  I had no idea they were developing a console version, that's fantastic.  I'm curious how they'll modify the control scheme to make it work.  Lots of people say the Xbox controller works great for flight and combat, but there are some actions they need to use mouse & keyboard (or voice commands) to perform.  It's too bad the Kinect died, because Kinect head tracking and voice commands would be perfect for this game.

I'm bummed that Valve is going in their own direction with VR instead of just joining the Oculus bandwagon.  I can see myself liking the technology enough to buy both a Rift and a Morpheus, but a 3rd VR platform on top of that is a tough sell.

54  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Arcade (yes, Arcade)] Star Wars Battle Pod on: March 02, 2015, 02:42:47 PM
Checked this out over the weekend and tried the Yavin Death Star attack, Hoth snowspeeders, and Falcon vs. Death Star II.  I'm afraid I'd only rate it as "that was kinda neat."  The panoramic bubble screen was really cool and immersive, almost like VR without depth perception, but the gameplay was shallow even for a rail shooter.  "Turn this way, now press the fire button, now you can't press the fire button anymore, ok now press the other fire button."  The throttle didn't seem to do much more than let you slightly vary how far away your only allowable target enemy appeared.

I'm glad I tried it, and I'll probably go back another time to do the two scenarios I skipped and replay the two Death Star runs, but I don't think it's worth going through extraordinary lengths to find the game if you don't have one nearby.

How much does it cost to play a game?

I think the card reader said it cost 15 "chips" a scenario, and you get X chips per dollar if you get the $10 card but Y chips per dollar if you get the $20 card, and you can SUPERCHARGE your card to get 25% more chips for an extra cost which may or may not give you more chips per dollar.

Really I have no idea how much real dollars moneys I spent.

Nonfinal list of changes they're considering for the upcoming balance patch:

Quote
All Monsters
Minor maintenance and improvements

There is now a cooldown after each stealth pounce
All monsters can see recent damage on their health bar to help make burst damage visible.

Kraken
Fixing some flight edge cases that were causing inconsistencies making him too powerful or too weak depending on the situation.

Tranq Darts, Stasis Grenades and Harpoons pull Kraken down at a consistent rate regardless of whether he is in combat or out of combat. (they used to stack outside of combat)
Krakenís flight speed is no longer slowed by Tranqs and Stasis grenades since they pull him to the ground where running speed is affected.
Aftershock
Fixed a bug that was causing Aftershock to not break harpoon traps, Arc Mines or Sound Spikes.

Wraith
Making her movement speed less bursty which makes her easier to keep track of. Making Supernova less lethal while still allowing it to be just as powerful. Making Warp Blast a damage dealer instead of a traversal mechanic.

Warp Traversal
Speed reduced 25%
Supernova
Duration decreased by 50%
Decoy
Wraith becomes visible for half a second when shot while cloaked.
Cooldown increased by 2 seconds.
Warp Blast
Speed reduced by 40%.
Radius levels up now instead of range.
Max travel distance set to 30 meters for all levels.
Damage increased by 10%.

Trappers
Increasing the Trapper's effectiveness.

Mobile arena
Can no longer be heard by the Monster player (equipment sfx and VO callout.) Monster players need to be more aware and see the location of the Hunters rather than just listening for the Mobile Arena audio.
Markov
Balancing the Arc Mines a bit.

Arc Mine
Damage reduced by 20%
Fixed a bug where damage extended past the trigger radius.
Health reduced by 75% (they pop real easy now with flame breath, etc.)
Arm time increased by one second.
Hyde
Making Toxic Grenade a more effective area of denial weapon while also making it less spammy. Buffing Hyde's overall damage output.

Toxic Grenade
DPS increased by 50%
Now explodes in proximity to a monster (works vs airborne Kraken now)
Throw rate reduced
Toxic cloud lifetime reduced by 15%
Minigun
Accuracy increased by 12%
Damage increased by 20%

it's too time consuming for me to bold and fix formatting on the rest for you guys ~pug
Parnell
Multifire Rocket launcher
Has better accuracy while jumping and jetpacking
Maggie
Harpoon Trap
Arm time increased by one second.
Griffin
Sound Spike
Detection range increased to 60 meters
Now detects stealthing monsters within a 15 meter radius
Bucket
Guided Missile Launcher
Damage increased 11%
Cabot
Rail Cannon
Damage reduced by 30%
Reload time increased by 25%
Val
Increasing her overall effectiveness. Made her Medgun a bit more bursty. This makes capacity and reload perks useful for Val.

Medgun
Heals 20% faster
Consumes ammo 2.5x faster.
Takes 50% more time to recharge.
Tranquilizer
Duration increased to 10 seconds on all monsters (was already 10 seconds on Wraith, now other monsters match)
Caira
Acceleration Field
Cooldown increased by 15 seconds.

The argument is not at all over what the color of the dress is in reality.

The discussion is over what our perceptions are of the dress in that picture.

Please read what I replied to before you get all snarky, Bullwinkle. He said he wanted to know what color the dress was in reality. It has been stated numerous times in many places.

The thing that gets me is how so few people are able to say "oh yeah, I guess I can see it that other way."  Almost everyone firmly thinks their way is the one true way and it boggles their mind how anyone can see anything different.

Pug, that test doesn't really make any sense and I hope it's a joke.

Yes, the true chromatic color of the pixel may be light blue, but that says nothing about the true original color of the real article in shaded sunlight.

The argument isn't over the exact pixel color values of the image, it's about the color of the dress in reality.

I can't wrap my head around how the white/gold population is perceiving this thing, so yes it was a real test.  I thought the white/golders might still see white/gold in at least the first image.

Gold isn't a colour, and it has to do with the yellow, and shadow.

Take the pic and throw it into negative.... regardless of what you "see", the negative is unabashedly White/"Gold" which means they are not the colours in positive.

The negative is not unabashedly white/gold.

In that file you attached, the left image has a large black region at the top with a goldish color cast on it, and the next stripe down as well as the shoulder pauldron thingie are a periwinkle blue.

The right image has a large periwinkle region at the top, and the next stripe down as well as the shoulder pauldron thingie are black.  Both the periwinkle and black have a goldish color cast, and the goldishness is more extreme on the right image's black than the left.

When I moved to Albuquerque it was a giant cultural shift getting used to the talky friendly cashiers here.  In Boston, you're about as close to the robot cashier as you could hope for.  Just keep your head down, get the thing done, get out.  A hello and a thank you is about as chatty as it got.

In Albuquerque it's full on "oh I've never tried that!"  "Are you having a barbecue?"  "Oh my niece loves that hemorrhoid cream, you're going to love it!"

After a number of months transition trying to stop myself from thinking the chatty workers were about to rob me or something "What do you want?! Why are you talking to me so much?! Take my wallet!" I finally got used to it and started appreciating the friendliness.  It feels more community-like.

Of course, now I've been reprogrammed and when I've returned to Boston on business I've caught myself being the overly chatty one.

72  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4, XB1, PC] Evolve (from Turtle Rock) on: February 24, 2015, 05:25:42 PM
Everything unlocked pretty quickly for me.  The few unlock requirements I thought were stupid were easy enough to knock out in solo mode.  Lazarus stealth revives, for instance, I did by killing and reviving random wildlife in solo mode.

I've started giving Kraken a try even though Wraith is my favorite since it's not as fun to win when everyone thinks you need to be nerfed.  I couldn't wrap my head around Kraken play my first few times, but I have seen the light and now I love him.

My current strategy is to take the movement speed perk, two points in mines and one in lightning strike.  If the hunters are on my tail while I'm still stage 1, I'll lead them to a wildlife big nasty and then start peppering with the mines and lightning from afar.  Often I can get my first kill just from that, but if they escape from the wildlife unscathed I'll just fly backward across the map and lead them on a merry chase.

I can stay out of trapper dome range as they chase me, so I just keep throwing banshee mines in their path and lightning zapping them.  Their jetpacks are inevitably sapped as they keep leaping over obstacles to keep up with me, and so it's near impossible for them to dodge the lightning.  If the map gods favor me, I can even lead them to run into yet more wildlife big nasties as they chase me.

Doing this, I usually either get the hunters so wounded and tied up with wildlife that I can evolve to stage 2 and dine for a while in peace, or they're in such bad shape I can make a U-turn and get some kills or get a stage 1 win.

Was this unpreventable? I'm actually surprised the parents are getting so much sympathy based on the description.

There's only so much you can do to kid-proof the entire world.  If the kid had never left his room on his own before, let alone solo opened the front door to the house, I think it's understandable that the parents never saw that as a high risk for that kid.

I've got a fishtank in my house, and conceivably my 4.5 year old could quietly leave her room while we were sleeping, walk downstairs, drag a stepstool of some sort over to the fishtank, open the lid, fall in, and drown.  But my daughter has never exhibited any behavior around the fishtank that would make her seem interested in doing anything remotely close to that action, and she doesn't even ever leave her room on her own unless we open the door for her or tell her over the baby monitor that she can come downstairs.

Should I find some way to completely strap down the lid to the fishtank even though it's seems extraordinarily unlikely that anything would actually happen?  I mean, I admit talking through the fishtank scenario now makes me want to strap down the lid out of the self-induced fear I just gave myself, but I'm sure if I put my mind to it (and hated myself) I could think of even more hypothetical deadly scenarios for my kids.

I guess when my daughter was even younger but not using a crib, I did have a childproof doohickey on her bedroom door knob to stop her from leaving her room on her own, so maybe there was more the parents in the OP could've/should've done.  But I'm inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt unless I hear otherwise.

edit to my previous post:  I misread Roman's post the first time and didn't realize it was an unrelated other citizen who did the crowdfunding rather than the toddler's parents.  That changes everything, and if he keeps a single dime for his own personal benefit then yes, he's going to hell.

With a situation that messed up, I wouldn't fault the parents no matter what they did with the money.  The best thing to do probably would be to pay for the death-related expenses (without being restricted to precisely $20k) and then doing something philanthropic with the rest, but unless there was something in the fine print of the crowdfunding it's their money to use however they want, and in the face of a terrible tragedy it's easy to not make your finest decisions.

edit: I misread who did the fundraising.  If it was just Some Guy who raised the money, then yes, he'll go to hell if he keeps any of the money for himself
