And ironically, the blue LEDs are the trickiest and most expensive ones to produce.  I had a family member who used to work as an optoelectronics engineer and back in the late 80s they didn't even think blue LEDs would be possible.

Yeah, I'm with you. Even a single LED can disrupt my sleep if it's bright enough. I haven't taken to taping over anything, but for the bright ones I'll point them away from the bed or toss something on top of them to cover it up.

it is pretty bad how fad games like these get remade without any note towards the original idea.  all you can hope for is that the knockoffs are recognized as they are.

This version of 2048 at least has the following minor tip of the hat:
"Created by Gabriele Cirulli. Based on 1024 by Veewo Studio and conceptually similar to Threes by Asher Vollmer."

Ha, in fact, I'm pretty sure the 2048 you linked to in the original post is a knockoff of the knockoff.

I don't get the hate for Origin honestly. It's pretty unobtrusive and doesn't really bother me. Yeah it's EA and it's not Steam but overall I haven't had any problems with it yet and I've had it since late BF3 time period.

When every other PC game you own is on Steam, "it's not Steam" is a big downside just on its own.  It's nice to have your whole library in one spot.

Other than that, I haven't personally had any major issues with the service itself.  Some have, though, and when they have tech issues with Origin but not with Steam, that adds to the Origin hate in a big way.

I have to say, even though the Threes guys are fairly calm about it, seeing all these clones pisses me off.  Not your fault, though, Caine.

The thing that gets me about the clones is that they even copied the visual style.  That seems to eliminate any chance that you're creating a "game inspired by Threes" and turns it squarely into "we want to profit off of the success of Threes by blurring the lines between them."

Can't see how anyone could play D2 at this time. It looks and plays terrible against current games IMO.

The original version of D3 was plagued by the greed of the RMAH as well as the console-influenced focus on being much more an action game.  Itemization stunk and that just brought more focus on the lack of depth/customization in the skill system.

I'm curious how you think the original D3 release suffered in some way because of consoles.  The revamping they did for the consoles (Loot 2.0, etc.) are what turned it into a fun game.

yeah.  I never played Threes, so when this came up, I thought it was a new thing. ha!

That's one of the interesting things about that open letter.  Things can get created and distributed so quickly nowadays, there can be very little time for an original idea to be able to establish that it is the original idea before the copycats come along.

In other news, Respawn has implemented one of the best anti-cheat measures I've ever seen.  Instead of banning you when they detect a cheat, they force you to play solely with other cheaters.

Probably too late notice to set something up this weekend? How about we start planning a Titanfall night (or day) next week? Friday, Sat, or Sunday is good for me smile day or night

Daytime play isn't likely for me, but there's a good chance I'll be on every night this week.  I just flipped to Gen 3 and I'm surprisingly loving the prestige process way more than I ever did in CoD.  I think it's a combination of how you hit max level faster by default, how you get bonus XP each new generation, and how there are the added challenge requirements to flip.

I usually can't log on until Really Late Eastern, though.  If I'm going to play I usually pop on at 11pm eastern just a bit after the kiddos go to bed.

Some good matchmaking improvements coming.

Quote
1. Searching for teammates and opponents will now sometimes take more time to look for players that are a good skill level match, rather than purely prioritizing speed over quality. This will give us more time to build better teams and create closer games that are worth staying in for a longer period of time.

2. Rather than playing against the same opponents over and over, the game will periodically split the teams apart and search for new opponents for each team. This means if one team is dominating, we will update the skill for all of the players and then find each team a better suited match for the next round. Did you lose to a really great team? We'll make them disappear and replace them with a new opposing team - and they will have no idea that you just got your butts kicked. This should end some of the frustration with playing for extended periods when you're having an off night.

I still think it's weird they don't like to split up teams made up of random players, but the #2 fix above is a great way to improve things if they're dead set on keeping teammates locked together.

Agree Hetz, I played D1 a bit, didn't touch D2, but Hearthstone and the forum effect has made me all over D3 when it comes to PS4.   Can't wait...

You'd be better off playing diablo 2 in the interim. The loot patch improves 3 a lot and it's a lot of fun, but Diablo 2 is a better game.

Depends on what you're looking for.  The easy respecs in Diablo 3 are perfectly suited to the way I like to play Diablo games, so that alone gives it a big edge of D2 in my book.  In D2 I always felt afraid to spend points on a new skill lest I waste points on a skill I don't want or need.  In D3 I can happily experiment as much as I want.

I wasn't really digging the crusader at first--it kept on feeling like I had nothing I cared to spend my mana on most of the time--but I just got into the low level 20s and now the abilities are really starting to be fun.  The ability to leap into the air for a delayed AoE damage landing feels just a Final Fantasy lancer/dragoon leap, which is just fun.

Now my biggest complaint is how I can have my crusader wield an awesome gigantic 2-handed weapon in one hand... that magically disappears and turns into the same old whip spell effect animation every time.  I know the original classes also had weapons that vanished for spell effects, but that seems like something they could have done a little better with this brand new hero.  Ah well.

How do loot drops work now?  Is the equipment I see drop just mine to grab, or do we need to roll need before greed or some such before anyone picks anything up?

I'm pretty sure all players in D3 get their own loot drops that are not visible to other players.

My biggest unease around this is just around privacy issues.  FB goes for the "opt out" method for just about everything, even some privacy decisions that are pretty sensitive.  You can't even just set your privacy settings once and then feel comfortable, because they regularly change or add new settings/features that have nonprivate default settings.  I do still use FB, but I've gotten into a habit of auditing every page of the settings menus every so often just to make sure it's still locked down in the way I want it to be.

Marrying that privacy philosophy with gaming and VR isn't exactly a thrilling prospect for me.

My other big unease is just about whether or not this will significantly change the path Oculus was taking.  If FB lets Oculus continue doing the things they've been doing that have been getting me excited, ok, but if the direction starts feeling too differently then Morpheus is going to start looking better and better.

It's pretty similar to my feelings about EA becoming the publisher for Titanfall.  As long as Respawn can keep doing what they're doing, ok, but the more I start smelling EA on the product the more red flags go up.  Except in this case FB isn't just a publisher; they bought the whole damn company.

As long as the Rift remains an open enough platform for me to be able to play weird experimental indie titles, I'll probably still be happy.

Switching to the party screen and hitting B doesn't work?

It might. That just wasn't intuitive to me. Then again nothing about this fucking UI is intuitive to me.

If you have your game up and the party screen snapped on the right, the first step is determining which screen has focus.  This is indicated by faith and hunches.  (there's a subtle outline I think?)

If the party screen doesn't have focus, double tap the to switch.  Once the party sidebar has focus, hit B.

I don't know for sure if you can omit the Kinect for the entire setup process, but I've played my XB1 without the Kinect attached a bunch of times and it works just fine.  You lose out on the facial recognition automatic profile login, and you get a constant reminder in the corner of the screen that the Kinect is disconnected, but I was able to game without issue.

I didn't know the console pesters you about it.  Is this article correct that the unplugged Kinect reminder only appears on the dashboard -- not while you're playing a game?

Not while playing a game, correct.  Even the dashboard reminder isn't very intrusive.  More it's just amusing as a "please please please we really wanted you to love Kinect" plea.

That's interesting, I thought they were claiming each hero was supposed to be really unique/individualized/special to play, sounds like that's not the case?

I dunno, I've only tried about 10 heroes so far and most of them seem pretty standard.  There's lots of fun flavor to the presentation and animations for each character with typical Blizzard polish, but when you boil them down to what they do they seem pretty cookie cutter.  From the dev diaries, it sounds like they have plans to expand on the hero-specific talent progression as you level up in a match, so I think that may be where they differentiate themselves more.

For example, here's the current free rotation:

  • Zeratul - pretty typical set of assassin skills
  • ETC - pretty typical set of warrior skills
  • Muradin - pretty typical set of warrior skills
  • Tassadar - pretty typical set of healer skills
  • Arthas - more on the unique side.  warrior without a lot of burst damage capability but with a lot of slows and freezes that can be devastating in a way you don't immediately notice
  • Witch Doctor - definitely unique, lots of area damage abilities pulled straight from Diablo 3, with a lot of regen abilities.  I like that his gargantuan ultimate does extra damage if he's able to pick up a minion to use as a club
I may be being overly critical, and there are also still not all that may heroes in the game.  And even though I called those skillsets above typical that doesn't mean they're not fun to play.  ETC's stun ability, for example, makes enemies dance to his music, and his other abilities are powerslide, face melt, guitar solo, mosh pit, and stage dive.  He's probably my favorite hero of the current rotation.

Bear in mind that my most immediate point of comparison is Smite, so I guess mainly I'm saying the heroes seem a lot more same-y than the great variation you see in Smite.  If you told me I had to play Muradin instead of ETC, for example, I wouldn't bat an eye since you don't really have to play them that differently.

As for the cons, obviously I haven't tried it but I'd imagine the dynamic game mechanic inherently needs to be match-altering, or it ends up not being an interesting point of conflict which kind of defeats the point of having it there.

Yeah, it does need to have a big effect, but it currently seems a bit overdone.  But then again, since everyone is still learning the game you often have teammates who don't get how important it is to push the map objectives, and maybe that plays into the feeling of unfairness.  It's certainly something that could get fixed by balance patches.

On another subject, most of the heroes I've tried so far have the typical mix of cone attacks, teleports, stuns, heals, shields line attacks, etc.  One hero in particular, though, really breaks the mold:  Abathur.  He's the 'evolution master of Kerrigan's swarm' and is extremely difficult to play.

This overview covers him in much more detail than I could, but the most obvious twist is that Abathur never really does his own fighting.  You pick an ally to posses as your symbiote, and you sort of float around on that ally with a unique separate set of abilities (skill shot, AoE, shield).  Abathur's ultimate ability is to become a full copy of a friendly hero and use that hero's skills and ultimate instead.  He also has nests that with an upgrade can be placed globally and act as mines as well as giving vision.  Since Abathur's 'mount' transportation is replaced by the ability to tunnel anywhere with vision, there's a ton of strategy to nest placement.

He's far too complicated for me to play at this point, but I really hope we get more heroes like this in the pipe that really break the mold.

The father said, "Bring the green blanket to the hospital with you.  It's his favorite."  But then it turned out the green blanket was not his favorite at all.  Oh man.

Thanks for the updates, I am fascinated by this game and an enjoy the screenshots and posts. Question about lanes and corners: Are you stuck in your lane in a corner? You can't take the apex in the corner like you would driving a car? It looks a bit strange in the screen shots that the chariots seem stuck in a lane around corners, or is that not the case?

You can't take path 2, no.  You generally have to stick to your lane.  There are a lot of gameplay reasons for this, but I wouldn't be shocked if there turned out to be some historical basis as well.

You can change lanes in a turn, but since the turn based style locks your desired path in for the next 100 feet or so, you usually only get one opportunity in a turn for ordering a lane change, and you don't get to choose where that opportunity occurs.  This means you generally need to set things up for the lane you want beforehand.

And the lane you choose is really important.  If you're going too fast on an inner lane, you have a high chance of damaging your cart or a horse, or even completely flipping and destroying your cart.  If you're lucky, the excessive speed will just make you shift into a lane further out.  You can slow down your cart, and sometimes going slow on the inside track can work for getting you to pass someone, but then you have to worry about accelerating on the straightaway, which probably means whipping your horses, which means injuring them and reducing their top speed.  Lots of tradeoffs.

So if you want to keep up your speed, you want to take a turn in a lane further out, but not too far out because the longer outer paths take significantly longer to traverse.  There's a sweet spot in the middle, so of course all the chariots are fighting over that sweet spot in the middle.  This also means there's a good chance of finding dead horses or flipped carts in the sweet spot--yet more obstacles to make navigating the turn tricksy.

Oh yeah, there's also a command you can give that tries to keep your cart more stable so it can handle high speed turns better.  That's all well and good, but if you're using that command it means you're not giving a command to change lanes (to dodge obstacles), to attack an enemy cart, or to defend against enemy carts.  Tradeoffs aplenty.
