That's been what Ive been thinking. I think I'll scrap this for whatever it's worth. Not enough time in the day to waste it doing the same thing over and over again, then up charge me for even more of the same..

There are many games where people enjoy doing the same thing over and over again. Instead of trying to figure out if you'll enjoy Destiny, why not just play it for as long as you find you're having fun, then stop playing when you're no longer enjoying it?

Well, this week's weekly heroic strike is a pain in the ass with just two people.  Egads.

Yeah, Mikagami and I were banging our heads on the wall doing that one.  We did fine up until the Phogoth room, and mainly had issues with all the AOE bombardment from Knights and Wizards.  We finally did ok when we retreated to the room right before the room the Shrieker spawns in and fought off the minion waves from there.  When it was just us and Phogoth, it was still extremely tedious and boring whittling down his bullet sponge HP bar.

Wait, the knights and wizards eventually stop spawning?  I thought they always kept coming randomly during that fight.

Not only do they stop spawning, apparently there's some trigger that makes existing ones despawn.  Things got quiet in our cheese room so we ventured into the main room to clean up.  A moment later and the last few wizards just vanished.

I've never done the raid and I'd love to give it a try. I could also bring in Ertic, an OO forumer who I now boardgame with most Saturdays, and one of his real life friends.

Should we just name a night for newbie raid night and try and get this rolling?  Saturday is out for Ertic and me, but any other night this week should work.

After trying the demo I'm pretty sure the actual gameplay is going to be too hard for my kid, but I think she'd still have fun dancing to the music and flailing her arms alongside me if I played.

In the core non-party game mode, is it possible for me to play 2-player and unlock new songs and remixes even if my 4-year-old Player Two is completely failing?
126  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (10/20) on: October 20, 2014, 03:31:25 PM
Tempted by Fantasia, but I need to read more and see if it's something my 4-year-old will enjoy.  Also really wish it came with Disney animated movie soundtrack songs.

Tempted by Civ: Beyond Earth, but I need to read impressions on how tedious the end-game is compared to other Civs

I'll probably be able to hold out for sales on both.  Plenty on my current gaming plate as it is.

I'd say it's really important to know your matchups. You're not going to be able to handle the unfavorable ones if you don't know all the subtle ways your special moves can counter theirs. Also keep in mind that the input lag is going to be far less in person than what you're used to training at home, so that may throw off your combo and reversal timing.

If they include live sporting events then we are one step closer to really being able to ditch cable. Now we just need ESPN to get on the band wagon.

How does CBS enter the "makes a cable subscription worth it" equation?  Are there some extra CBS sports channels not available over-the-air?

Where I live I can't get a good over the air signal on any local station. Which means I need Satellite (for the sake of the argument it's the same thing as cable)  in order to watch any local sporting event. Thus I hope they include Live sporting events as part of the subscription, I don't want to wait 24 hours or even 1 hour to be able to watch a football game, etc.

Ah that does change the equation.  And you're also saying ESPN currently offers no valid streaming options?

Thanks for the advice Pug!  The invite I got said everything is carrying over into release?

Also why are some of the Talents purple and inaccessible?  Do I have to buy those too?

Oh man I love that unicorn thing or whatever the heck it is!!

They said the wipe they did a few weeks ago is the last one, so everything now should indeed carry through to release.

Talents are inaccessible because Blizzard decided we're too stupid to understand 3-5 talent choices at first.  Or maybe that it's just plain more fun to play characters gimped for a while before you get their good talents.  In any case, you now have to level up to level 2 or 3 or something with a hero to get access to all the talents for that hero.

That is a wonder billie.  It is like a goat, but more wonderful.

Welcome!  I highly highly recommend you ask for tips/advice before you spend any gold on anything.  In the last few months they've severely nerfed the gold income, so you very literally can't afford to make any purchases you'll regret.

Gold income may feel ok to you at the outset, but you're getting extra inflow from the early fast levelling up, which is accelerated even more accelerated from the double XP week they're having.  Also, don't think about buying Azmodan or Anub'Arak right now.  They decided to temporarily raise prices (both gold and real money) on newly released heroes.

If you think you like the game enough to want to spend real monies, check out the Nexus bundle that's currently being offered.  It's a fairly decent deal with a good selection of heroes, and it includes two mount unlocks.  The Witch Doctor zebra mount is a new one and I think it looks pretty cool.  And who can say no to unlocking a rainbow unicorn for Diablo to ride?

If you make any shop purchases at all during the alpha, I think you also still unlock the epic war steed mount, Wonder Billie:

edit:  Oh yeah, and you can try each hero for free in the shop.  The 'Try' button takes you to a little mini arena, and you can level yourself up, reset talents, toggle minions, etc.

Short term purchase for me.  I felt pretty burnt out on the CoD formula when I played the last one, so I'm buying the disc version with the intention of selling after I get a few weeks out of the multiplayer.  But hey, maybe they'll do enough new/improved stuff to make me want to hold onto it longer.  I wouldn't mind that one bit.

I love the premises of Destiny, but I think Bungie missed the ball on so many fronts that I find logging on to become quite tedious.   I'll probably log on to do strikes and to certainly check out the DLC since I already paid for it but I don't feel like farming mats and running the same bounties ad nauseam .  Loot dropping needs to be looked at as well.  I know they don't want to go the route of Borderlands and Diablo, but at the moment there systems sucks ass to me

This where I'm thankful there's no monthly fee involved with this.  If/when I hit my burnout point, I can take a break for a while until more content comes or they patch up some of the annoying bits, then come back without feeling like I've wasted my money.

I'm still loving the game but your complaints are all valid.  Farming materials isn't exactly a thrill, and the bounties could use way more variety.  Loot drops don't bother me all that much, but I'm a little biased since the random number generator gods were kind to me in the last week and I went from having only blue weapons to having all purples and 5 exotics.  But I do think it's pretty hilarious every time my team on PvP does fantastic and then just one solitary crappy drop appears on the scoreboard.

My biggest annoyances at the moment:

Material farming.  I mainly like to play PvP so I'm gathering exactly zero materials during my normal play.  There should be some way of gaining mats in PvP.  As much as I'd enjoy sniping people trying to gather spinmetal during a match if they added it that way, that's probably not the answer.  If they just added a pack of X materials as a possible end-of-match reward I'd be a happy camper.

Unskippable cutscenes.  Right now doing the daily heroic is right on edge of balancing "I'd rather not do this" with "I'm willing to do this for the reward."  Cutting out the cutscenes would do a lot to make these more painless.  There's something wrong when I plan to walk away from my console and get a drink or take a dump while 'playing' a part of a game's daily activity.

Special Events.  Almost really fun.  Please run any future events past the Harkonis "this part is BS" quality assurance screening before they go live.

Two questions:

1. Is it true that you can only have one piece of exotic armor on a time?  I mean is there any reason for me to swap out my exotic gauntlets for an exotic chestplate?

2. Is there any reason to buy items from the speaker? Do they do anything?  They seem purely decorative.

1. You can have one exotic weapon and one exotic armor. You'd choose the gauntlets or chestplate just based on which one you prefer or how they synergize with your other armor options.

2. Speaker items are just aesthetic. Bear in mind that the Motes he takes as currency can also be spent at the Friday/Saturday Xur vendor for a random exotic (though it can roll armor for any of the three classes).

FWC has an AR you can get randomly, but it's random.  You should have done some research and picked a faction that sells an AR so you could buy one if they didn't give you one.  You also probably should have at least read a paragraph on how to faction in the first place Tongue

slywink

Yeah. I did it based on teg's post a few pages back about what abilities they focused on. Last time I listen to him.  disgust

Use FWC to buy your purple armor, since they'll have the ability bonuses you decided you wanted, then use other vendors to get your weapons.

My question is: if I take off the FWC one and put on a vanilla one will crucible rank up faster?

Ranking up normally is faster than not ranking up at all, yes.  icon_wink

There are 5 factions:
Vanguard
Crucible
-----
FWC
Dead Orbit
New Monarchy

Vanguard and Crucible are the default.  You do PvE stuff, you rank up with Vanguard; you do PvP stuff, you rank up with Crucible.

When you wear a faction item, both PvE and PvP now feed into that faction.  This happens instead of you ranking up in Vanguard/Crucible.  You still gain the two types of funny money "marks", but your FWC faction only takes Crucible Marks.

If you want to shop at the Vanguard store or the Crucible store, you need to take off your FWC item for a while.
142  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Destiny -Bungie's new game with Activision on: October 08, 2014, 01:31:23 PM
If you wear your faction item, you can level up that faction faster than you can level up the default Crucible and Vanguard factions because both types of reputation are feeding into one place.

But you will also be gaining the two types of funny-money, crucible marks and vanguard marks.  For some reason, the three optional factions only take crucible marks.  Just like Homer having $1000 worth of Itchy & Scratchy money that can't be redeemed inside Itchy & Scratchy Land, you will collect vanguard marks but have no place to spend them.

I find praise of the actual writing fairly baffling, as to my eyes/ears it is pretty amateurish and simple.  There is no elegance or love of language in there - he's just telling the story... plainly.

That is skillful writing. A good writer doesn't try to impress with his writing skillz. He lets the writing stay in the background, allowing the reader to focus unhindered on the story. This is one of the first lessons I learned when I got into writing. A writer isn't a showman trying to impress his readers with flair and clever sentences. He's a craftsman carefully laying down a story in a way that allows the readers to forget the writer was even there in the first place.

Some good writers focus on a plain telling of the story, some good writers focus on crafting amazing poetic sentences.

I almost always prefer the former, but sometimes the latter just blows me away.  Mervyn Peake's writing in the Gormenghast series is incredible.  It may take him 3 paragraphs to describe someone's face, but at the end I can picture the face almost as clearly as my own.  Jhumpa Lahiri's gorgeous writing in Interpreter of Maladies also comes to mind.

So this Iron Banner thing, they had this active during the beta?  When they say that level advantages are enabled, do they just mean that attack and defense are going to come into play?  Or is there a damage reduction if you're a lower level than your target, like in PvE?

I think I'll be able to hold my own with inferior equipment, but if I have a 40-50% damage reduction against level 29s and 30s, that ain't gonna be so fun.

My primary platform is probably iOS nowadays.  I buy a higher quantity of games on iOS than on any other platform, and it's the only platform I game on at some point every day without fail.

After that, PC, PS4, and XB1 are pretty much tied.  I go to whichever one has the game I happen to be into at any given time.  My PC probably edges out the consoles as far as "primary" qualifications, since Steam sales mean I buy a crapton more on the PC.

My 3DS is my most disappointing current platform.
