OSX. That's awesome news. If that's the case, I'll just wait.

I don't know if they've mentioned the release recently, but the company line used to be "OS X version a few months after PC release."

I can't comment much on the current state since I've still been playing solo, but I know they've been saying the next big update on the way (next month or two) is going to be heavily aimed at beefing up coop play.

You'll be using your keyboard (or Voice Attack) for a lot of commands, but I've heard of a lot of folks doing just fine with a controller.
125  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Elite: Dangerous on: January 04, 2015, 09:33:42 AM
If you're in the mood for action, head to a 'conflict zone' if you can find one, or a 'resource extraction site' which are pretty easy to find.  You should see a constant influx of things to blow up, much faster than you can find by searching unidentified signal sources.  Nav beacons can also get a lot of traffic.
126  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Elite: Dangerous on: January 03, 2015, 07:18:51 PM
I just did some futile Google and ebay searches, so maybe they don't make them anymore, but I think what you'd want are one of those old fashioned headset mics that have just a mic and a headstrap, no audio output at all.  I've never seen those as bluetooth though, only with a regular stereo mini cord.

4.  Anyone try the Eagle just for simple bounty hunting at Nav Beacons?  If so - what are your thoughts?
The Eagle is great for combat, being very nimble and having I think the highest turn rate of any ship.  It's not very hardy, though, so if you start getting shot a lot (or ram into something) you can die pretty quick.

Edit to add Question 5.   What about picking up illegal cannisters?  It is really bugging me how I get scanned about 75% of the time, and end up paying more in fines than my "stolen" cargo is worth at the Black Market.  Any tips for that?
There are a few ways go go about this.  If you find a black market in an unaffiliated port in an anarchy system, I think those have less of a chance of having police around who want to scan you.

If there are police at the station you're approaching, they need line of sight to be able to scan you, so you can try and keep the station itself in between you and the police ships for as long as possible.

Finally, you can use silent running to sneak your way past the police.  (Do the stealth tutorial mission if you're not sure how silent running works.)  Some people take this to an extreme and get themselves lined up with the station entrance miles and miles away, so they can do one burst of thrust and make it all the way into the station with hardly any further adjustments or thrusts.

I just bought an Eagle fighter, equipped with two pulse lasers, plus an open small mount and an open utility mount. I have lots of cash, what do folks recommend to fill those empty slots for someone who's planning to go in harm's way?

Cannons work better against the hull than lasers (which work better against shields) so a cannon on your 3rd weapon hardpoint would do you well.  I'd also make sure all three weapons are gimballed -- it really makes life easier.  For the utility hardpoint, I'd go for a kill warrant scanner so you can find more bad guys to shoot.

But don't forget to upgrade your internals, too!  Upgrading life support doesn't cost much and can give you much more time to deal with a hull breach.  Upgrading your power plant and power distributor can help make sure you keep those lasers firing longer.  Pretty much all the upgrades for internals are useful.

You don't have to buy a joystick. A normal gamepad works just fine. If you have a gaming console those controllers would also work fine. I've been playing the game using an old Logitech Gamepad and I'm having a blast.

I also see numerous people on other forums who even seem perfectly content with keyboard & mouse for this game.

I'm 73% sure that the 1 priority items will be the last to go offline.

Don't blame Microsoft or Sony for their networks taking a hit during this debacle. There's little anyone can do to prevent or stop a sufficiently large DDoS attack. Even worse, it requires just about no skill to pull off for the "hackers" (trust me, they aren't hackers even if they like to pretend to be).

This is not true. Companies that are well prepared can mitigate and recover much faster than what happened hear. This is not something that can't be dealt with.

It's impossible to fully protect yourself against DDoS attacks, especially ones of the magnitude we've seen this Christmas. What could they possibly have done? It's possible to have a server park that is so huge that a DDoS doesn't really make a dent (Amazon, for example), but you can't expect every company out there, even the big ones, to have something like that. Microsoft has this kind of thing, and even they collapsed under the pressure. You can't just "fix" the problem either. From my understanding of this, you have to identify and block the unwanted traffic without blocking your actual customers, and that's easier said than done if the DDoS is well executed.

The DDoS is the greatest weakness the Internet has, and there's nothing anyone can do to protect against it. All they can do is try to recover, and that's MUCH easier said than done. You're vastly underestimating this attack.

What if at some traffic threshold they made it so you had to do a captcha code to log into PSN or XBL?  Would that work/help?  Annoying for legitimate users, but not as annoying as having the systems totally down for this long.

I no longer get annoyed at the process of decelerating out of supercruise now that I'm using this great rule of thumb that's been floating around:

Keep full throttle until your ETA gets to 7 seconds, then adjust your throttle as necessary to keep it at 7 seconds. You'll slow down to the blue exit markers just about as efficiently as possible without overshooting your destination.

135  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Elite: Dangerous on: December 23, 2014, 03:17:41 PM
I love some of the emergent gameplay you can get with this game.  I was exploring systems in my new Adder and fishing for pirates at signal sources to see how the ship handled in combat, and I got into a hairy but manageable 2 on 1 fight.  My shields are down but I'm about to take one pirate out and turn the tide, when my windshield shatters.  I hear the sounds of a breather mask come on, all the ship/space audio changes to account for the environment change, and I see a "5 minutes of oxygen remaining" warning.

I flee the fight and head for the only station in the system, dock as fast as I possibly can, land with 20 seconds of oxygen remaining.... and discover that the little outpost has no repair facilities.  Can I make it to another star and dock again within 5 minutes?  I pay for exploration data to find which systems even have repair facilities, realize I made my funds dip below the insurance level, sell off some nonessential ship parts, curse how the oxygen timer starts even while my ship is just being moved to the launch pad...

The whole sequence was really tense and exciting fun.  It wouldn't have been nearly as thrilling if it had been a scripted scenario doing the exact same events, because I'd know if it was scripted then it was designed to be beatable.  When this happened, it was entirely possible that I wouldn't even have been able to make it to the local outpost to replenish my oxygen.

I've been really happy with my A40, but I can't argue with Turtle.  The headset is perfectly competent--sounds great and is very comfy--but take the Mixamp out of the equation and the headset is probably not quite as comfy as a comparably priced Sennheiser.  I'd do some mathy figurin to see how much more a Mixamp + Sennheiser a la carte option would be compared to an all-Astro bundle.

If this interests you, I'd also do a bit of research to see how the newer Astro offerings handle PC audio and the newer consoles, depending on which systems you're planning to use the headset on.

Quote from: Turtle on December 22, 2014, 08:31:25 AM

All you really need is the mixamp. That has dolby headphone built in, so it's able to take a 7.1 (or 5.1?) signal, then process it to simulate a very convincing 5.1 simulation, all without the quality loss that comes from having multiple tiny speakers instead of a single one.

My older Mixamp only does Dolby 5.1, but I think the newer ones can do 7.1 now.  (Don't take my word for it.)  The 5.1 simulation is really great for both gaming and movies.  I don't know how they do the magic but it works.

I purposely avoid reading/watching spoilers about a movie in order to walk in thinking "I wonder what this is about."  If I see enough of a trailer to know I want to see something, I usually avoid all future trailers, don't rewatch the one I saw, and definitely don't go frame by frame looking for hidden details in the trailer.  The best situation is when someone recommends a movie or book to me without telling me anything about it.  I got to watch Primer that way and it made a big difference in my enjoyment.  For books, I recently got to read The Girl With All the Gifts without knowing a thing about the premise.

It's driving me insane... I've been trying to play for 9 hours now, lol

Not that it's much consolation, but the installation and launcher issues only came up recently.  I just tried to patch up my game this week and I kept having the installation stall out around 60% and display 0MB/s for the download.  After a few futile attempts to fix the issue, I ended up just leaving the launcher running for a few days and it finally finished the update on its own.

There's also a solo mode available, in which case it matters even less if some players get a head start.

I'd say it matters about the same (but of course, you're technically correct anyway), as the chances of running into other players are pretty damn low in this game.

How much do multiplayer map packs normally cost for CoD or other games?  Aren't they $15 or so without including any new weapons or equipment?

So even taking the new story missions out of the picture, since we already knew story missions were one of the worst parts of Destiny, isn't $5 pretty ok for a new strike (or two), new weapons & armor, and a new raid?

I mean, I'm still in the camp that almost all DLC schemes are bullshit, but this deal doesn't seem to be all that much more bullshit than the standard expectations of bullshit these days.

Watched way more TV before kids, watch a select few favorite series now.  Watch negligible amounts of sports.  Have not ever had a cable or dish subscription.  Main reason is cost/benefit has never made sense to me, secondary reason is that I've only ever desired a small handful of nonbroadcast channels, and only a small handful of shows on each of those channels.  I'd be far more interested in a $5/month Daily Show & Colbert Report subscription than I'd ever be in a $100 cable/dish subscription.  Almost everything my household wants to watch is on major networks, so over-the-air and a DVR works just fine for us.

I have subscribed to Netflix off and on.  Felt way happier with them before they made the big split of streaming and disc content.

Quote from: rittchard on December 05, 2014, 12:10:14 AM

For those that have "cut the cord" are you happy with the decision?
Over-the-air plus a homebrew SageTV dvr was all I needed for most of the 2000s, and when homebrew DVRs got too ornery for me I switched to over-the-air + TiVo and have been perfectly happy.

What, if anything, would it take to make you come back to some sort of cable/satellite provider?
Streaming options are insanely disjointed and inconsistent right now.  If you put "just torrent it" as an option in the competition, it's just plain ridiculous how many hoops you have to jump through to stream through legitimate channels in comparison.  Is it even offered for streaming?  Is it on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, or a network site?  Is it per-view or subscription?  Oh it's unavailable this month because a cable network aired it?  Do I have to watch the same two commercials 50 times?  Oh, the crappy proprietary crappy streaming widget crashed and I have to rewatch all the commercial checkpoints all over again?

Awful.  If someone did for video streaming what iTunes did for mp3 distribution, I would pay a premium for that.

Quote from: rittchard on December 05, 2014, 06:28:01 PM

Unfortunately the stuff that YK mentioned is still prevalent.

YK's stuff applies to me as well.  If I see an offer for "get X for the first 6 months!" I read it as "you do not get X feature at all!"  I have no interest in jumping through hoops to ensure I keep getting a good deal.  I just want to subscribe or pay my flat fee per content and be done with it.

Another question comes to mind, since we are more of the tech-oriented people here.  Does newer tech like 4K influence you at all?  Would some form of live 4K content (sports, concerts, etc) drive you to an alternate solution?
A provider with great 4k content may be of interest to me in 6-7 years when it's time for me to replace my TV again.  At the moment 4k content is irrelevant.

Quote from: rittchard on December 06, 2014, 01:21:12 AM

I had another question pop in my head while driving, how about exclusive content?  I guess that's kind of covered by the HBO question, but I guess more pointedly how important is new exclusive content to you?  Personally I pay for Netflix pretty much just for their exclusive shows, I rarely watch anything else with it.

Exclusive TV content in general annoys me as much as console exclusives annoy me.  I want to have a one-stop shop for my content.  The only way exclusives become palatable is if my personal desirable exclusives all end up being on a single platform so it's a super easy decision for me.
