omg this is not only the most amazing MOBA ever, it's the most amazing game ever made.  And its current state is undoubtedly the finest it will ever be (for some reason).

I'm only at the installation screen, but still, very impressive so far.

Hmmmmm. Despite doing both updates I suffered from the crackle last night. Really annoying.
I'll see if I can re apply the update

Try doing a cold boot by shutting down the system by pressing and holding the power button for 5 seconds and leaving it off for a bit before starting it up.

...then be sure to check your autoexec.bat and config.sys.  Loading the controller firmware into HIMEM really helps give you extra room for mouse drivers.

Has anyone able to get this game to work from a suspended state? Even if I back all the way out to the game menu, then turn my console off, when I turn it back on, I can't ever get back into a match without the game seizing up. I can bring it back up, change loadouts, etc., but when I try to enter a match for the first time, it hangs. Every time I start the console up, I have to use the menu button to quit the game, which is annoying because then you have to sit through the intro movies.

How do I know if I'm playing the game from a suspended state?  If I can turn my Xbox on with "Xbox, on!" ?

I've stalled out, too, despite having enjoyed the game every time I've played it.  I'd love to see someone find a way to make a JRPG that let's you go through the usual level progression and world exploration of the genre, but somehow still finish in 15 hours.

I tried to plug the PX4 into the Xbox One today, and the sound works nicely.   Problem?   NO CHAT over the damned headset.   Instead they want me to talk into my Kinect?   wtf?

There's an option to "Use Kinect for chat", perhaps if you uncheck it?

Without the new headset adapter doohickey, the microphones on many headsets can't be used at all.  As a workaround you could use the Kinect mic to transmit and still receive chat audio over your headset.  That setup actually did work a lot better than I expected, but it was hardly ideal.

Kind of ridiculous that they do controller firmware upgrades but don't have a great way to notify people.

I got prompted by my XB1 for at least the second update.  I think the USB cable has to be attached for it to realize the controller is out of date.  (but yeah, it's still ridiculous they can't detect your firmware version wirelessly)

Thanks wonderpug.   Looking up this doohickey.

This one, but don't pay the stupid $50 price the resellers are charging.  It's only supposed to be a stupid $25 price.

I'm in love with the Stryder with the perk for faster dash recharge.  It's almost like having the unlimited dash core ability constantly running.  The fantastic ability to use hit & run tactics means that any time an enemy Titan finds a way to see me I've got a full load of ammo ready to unleash.  "Where'd he go?" alpha strike!, "Where'd he go?" alpha strike! and repeat

For those who are n00bs, I understand not wanting to be a punching bag. But the only way to improve is to play regularly with people better than you. The only surefire way to stay a n00b is to be scared to play. I don't think there's any better game or time to jump into a franchise. CoD and BF are filled with veterans who have played those games for years. At least with Titanfall, everyone is on a relatively level playing field. And you can always play it safe and run around killing AI grunts.

Point taken, but "scared to play" and "not finding a game fun because you get killed every 2.3 seconds" are not quite the same thing.  Especially for those of us with limited FPS experience to begin with.

That being said, I don't have any idea how Titanfall actually plays, I'm just going off my previous MP shooter experience...maybe this one is entirely different.

In shooters like Call of Duty, if you're a beginner, or there's a skill mismatch on the teams, or you're just having an off day, it is very possible to spawn, move a bit, and then get killed before you accomplish anything.  You may not even see an enemy.  Other people are calling in AC-130 planes or attack dogs or dogs with bees in their mouth and when they bark they shoot bees out of their mouth.  You don't get to do any of that cool stuff.

What did CoD do to help with this?  The support killstreak concept let you unlock goodies even if you died, and the supply crates meant that you could (occasionally) get to try the higher level killstreak fun.  But if you weren't playing well you still wouldn't get the kills to see much of that.  Deathstreaks?  Great, so if you die a bunch you get an over-the-top boost that lets you maybe get one kill.  Then you die, and are right back to dying a lot and not accomplishing anything.

But in Titanfall, even if you're a complete beginner (but not as bad as ritt) you are almost guaranteed to be able to accomplish something every single time you spawn.  If you kill some Spectres or even just grunts, you are getting points for yourself and for your team, and you're making your Titan come faster.  The parkour stuff is extremely easy to learn and is just plain fun, and the high mobility in the game means that getting sniped from someone you could never have possibly seen is a rare to impossible event.

Best of all, unlike an elusive AC-130 you will be able to call in your Titan.  Multiple times.  And have fun.  And it's durable enough that you will very likely be able to kill an actual enemy player, or be able to get some damage in on an enemy Titan.

Then there are the burn cards, which will let you use a souped-up weapon every now and then, or cheat and be cloaked constantly, or get your Titan earlier than everyone else, or really cheat (once in a while) and have a total map hack view of everyone.  And with Oprahvian generosity, you get a burn card!  And you get a burn card!  And you!

And amazingly, Titanfall is able to let a beginner player have all that stuff without making experienced higher-skill players feel like their experience is cheapened.  There's still an incentive to play well, despite there being so much fun stuff to do when you play poorly.
143  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox One Discussion on: March 12, 2014, 12:29:43 AM
Bah, optical out still isn't quite there for the system. I switched to bitstream Dolby surround this morning since my Astro headset doesn't do DTS and it sounded phenomenal. Very noticeable improvement.

Later in the day I booted up the XB1 again, nothing altered, and now I get a crackling popping sound any time the XB1 plays audio. Online search shows I'm not the only one (but it's bizarre that it worked just fine earlier today).

Switching back to stereo out eliminates the crackling, but now that I've had a taste of better sound it's annoying to have to go back.

Early impressions:

Gameplay is just as fun as the beta, no surprise there. Having a blast, especially with the two additional Titans and all the new weapons and abilities to try out. I haven't tried the Ogre much yet but I'm really digging the Stryder. The three dashes let you do some really awesome complicated ambushes and escapes. I feel like I've got to be really annoying the enemies in dancing around, so mission accomplished.

The campaign mode is pretty lackluster, but at least it goes quick. It kinda fleshes out the world a wee bit, but not by much. You don't get attached to any characters, or even the plot. It kind of felt like MMO quests you get bored of and skip all the dialogue. "Yeah yeah yeah, I'm capturing 3 points for some reason. Let me at it."

Not really sure why they even bothered with the campaign. It's not really an extended tutorial, it's not enough to satisfy the "there's no single player campaign!" people, doesn't really change up the gameplay, and it hardly does anything to add to the game lore.

So yeah, don't expect much from the campaign mode, but the regular multiplayer is fantastic.

Oh, and all the maps I've played seem great so far.  More importantly, I haven't yet played on a map I hated.

If I like flight sims, I don't complain that Thief doesn't have an airplane level. I just go buy a flight sim. Since when did every game have to please every player?

Exactly! This game doesn't need single player. It's about pwning noobs... in mechs.. or with a jetpack strapped to your back!  icon_biggrin

Speaking as a noob, this is the exact reason why I won't be buying this game.  The whole package looks pretty awesome, but going up against the COD bro-sect holds exactly zero appeal to me.

No way CoD will vanish, but I think they'll have to make some big changes to the formula to not look really bad compared to Titanfall and the Titanfall-inspired multiplayer games we'll see these next few years.

I'm guessing CoD 2014 is too far along in development to be that CoD gamechanger, but then again Bobby Kotick is saying this year's CoD is "the best Call of Duty game ever created" and he seems like a totally unbiased source.

And that's why I raise an eyebrow at "those savings aren't being passed on to gamers."  If Respawn did make a quality SP campaign mode, there's no way we would be getting the same level of quality for the MP portion.

Why do you say that?  Haven't plenty of other FPS games provided OK SP modes and still delivered good MP quality?

I have to say that the complete lack of SP made it a non-purchase for me.  I tried the beta/demo and the MP was just too difficult for me to get into (literally I would take a few steps and die; I did manage to get into a mech once before taking a few steps in the mech and dying lol), so without a SP element there was no way for me to feel comfortable learning the game.

I guess from my perspective, games that have both SP and MP either have fantastic SP and shitty/tacked on MP, or the reverse of that.  Blizzard games are an exception... maybe Gears of War?  I was late to the party with that series.

But with games like Battlefield or Call of Duty, the SP campaign is never particularly enjoyable.  I know they have their fans, but I'm not one of them.  I buy those games and go straight to multi, and if there's something I can only unlock by finishing the SP campaign I groan--the addition of SP actually detracts from my experience in that case.

The biggest downfall I'll agree with regarding Titanfall's lack of single player is that it cuts out the best avenue for fleshing out the game world and lore.  The 'multiplayer campaign mode' seems like their method of addressing that, but I'll have to see it for myself to see if it works.

interesting take in a middling review on metacritic:

"an immensely enjoyable and exquisitely crafted shoot-em-up...Yet Titanfall is also a worrisome product that delivers only a fraction of what competing games – including Call of Duty – do, for the same price tag. That sets a worrying precedent where gamers are set to get less game for the same money. As the next generation of consoles takes root, this is both a commercial and an artistic concern."

Edit: I almost never play the SP of MP games, but like someone said earlier in the thread, this game woudl be awesome for a SP.

Has the console world never seen a multiplayer-only FPS game or something?  I've purchased so many on the PC without it ever feeling like a worrying precedent.  Online multiplayer games are just a different kind of game.

And from that same review:
Quote
The total lack of single-player capability is at odds with most other FPS games. If the likes of Call of Duty or Halo can provide both single- and multiplayer modes for the same price tag, it doesn’t seem right that Titanfall can’t. While Respawn and EA are cutting down on the price of development by foregoing single-player, those savings aren’t being passed on to gamers, which is the concerning part of the game.
CoD and Halo have development teams the size of small cities, don't they?  I think there's a direct inverse correlation between development team size and ability to innovate.  Tiny indie devs can do whatever they want, 60-man teams like Respawn can breathe new life into the FPS genre, and CoD/Halo size teams get bogged down in committee gridlock and give us this stagnant genre with yearly baby step innovations.

And that's why I raise an eyebrow at "those savings aren't being passed on to gamers."  If Respawn did make a quality SP campaign mode, there's no way we would be getting the same level of quality for the MP portion.
