Would you ever tell someone "if you like Infamous, you're going to like Watch Dogs", or vice versa?

I find it particularly interesting how every single one of you has avoided answering this question, rhetorical or not. No, not interesting. Telling.

Sure, yeah.  I'd make that recommendation.  My brother-in-law pretty much exclusively plays open world games nowadays, and he's likely about to buy a PS4 and buy one or the other.  When he finishes one, I will in fact very likely recommend the other.

Sonic and Super Mario play extremely different too, right?  Different genres?

Now for the million dollar question you're dodging...

123  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [E3 2012] Watch Dogs on: June 08, 2014, 09:18:00 PM
I decided to play this before Infamous for just that reason -- I'm expecting to like Infamous much better.

That said, I think I'm enjoying Watch Dogs a lot more than the folks above. I'm a bit past halfway in the campaign, and I'd agree it's not the most compelling protagonist and that the story is a bit of a mess. But if you check your critical palate at the door a bit and just run with it like a summer action movie, it's not too hard to squint your eyes a bit and pretend the story makes sense.

Being a vigilante good guy is a nice change from GTA -- you're still stealing cars and doing other bad stuff... but with heart! slywink I'm enjoying the invasion multiplayer style way more than I expected to, both on offense and on defense. I also really like the freedom I feel I have in how I approach missions and side missions. Most of the time I don't feel on rails, and I can choose my own balance of stealth, hacking, and shooty shooty.

I really respect review sites with good and plainly stated transparency policies.  Just state up front whether or not you got money to feature Bubble Witch.  Problem solved.

In addition to pop-up ads, I've been getting a lot of redirects in the last few weeks that lead to another site and then to the iTunes store for various stupid games.  I'll bring up GT and before I can even click on a subforum I find I'm at the store page for a game.  This is with Chrome on an iPhone.

They are promoting an event called Marvel Heroes 2015, which I really don't quite understand the significance.  I mean why is "2015" starting in the middle of 2014?

You overslept and missed 2,013 sequels.

One could hope that they would have the resources to make platform specific versions.

It's still diluting the resources.

With Titanfall, the 360 version was outsourced to a completely different company, wasn't it?  Meaning it wouldn't have had any impact on the quality of the XB1 version?

Recent Twitter posts imply it's the same deal with Horizons, and there is a second studio working on the 360 version.

In that case, the situation is pretty sweet for consumers but still a bit of a headscratchy move on MS's part.

I generally agree with everything forge said.  It seems odd to put a flagship series title (even if it's an offshoot) on both platforms when they so badly need people to have more compelling reasons to want an XB1.  At the very least they should offer a 360 to XB1 upgrade path like was done at launch.

But Bullwinkle's theory of it having started as a 360 title also makes sense.  I'll delay my concerns about the cross-gen release for when we actually get to see some more screenshots and video to see if the XB1 version really does look compromised for this.

140  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 2890 Days until launch. Which system are you getting? on: June 02, 2014, 03:26:02 PM
Well I had a moment of weakness when I saw some PS4s in stock at Target, and I joined the Own 'Em Both Club.

Overall, the PS4's form and UI are really impressive compared to the XB1.  Aesthetics are subjective and all, but its slim look and minimalist front make it look more modern than the XB1.  How the hell did Sony fit everything in there?  Internal power supply, too?

Before I bought either console, I thought I preferred the feel of the PS4 controller.  It does still feel more comfortable in my hands than the XB1 controller, but when I went to play my first game I found I missed the feel of the XB1's analog sticks.  I think they got the resistance better on the XB1.  I had been concerned about the glowy light on the PS4 controller, but the way it's angled I can hardly even notice it.

The PS4 UI is a huge breath of fresh air compared to the XB1 UI.  I haven't had a single head-scratching moment of struggle trying to find something on the PS4.  (Though it did take me a minute to figure out where the power button was on the system.)

So while my first impressions in general lean way toward preferring the PS4, the PS4 does fall flat in one gigantic way.  No Harmony remote support?!?!  Are you kidding me?!  I told The Wife she should try playing blu-rays on the PS4 to see if she prefers it to the XB1 for that, but this sure makes the decision easy.

Have they said they'll patch this in soon?  It just boggles my mind that they would learn from so many of their PS3 mistakes but go ahead and repeat this one.

Oh, and as for what drove me to finally buy one (other than a weak will), Infamous was the second to last straw.  It was the first PS4 exclusive I really wanted to get my hands on.  Oh, and I guess the third to last straw was seeing that Sony really meant it with their promise of indie support.  And now that I think about it, fourth to last straw would be PSN+ and how its consistently offering free games I'm actually interested in.

But the last straw, surprising to me, was the small graphics superiority the PS4 has over the XB1 for cross-platform.  I enjoyed Black Flag on the XB1 despite knowing there was a better looking PS4 version out there, but as I geared up to buy Watch Dogs I found myself more annoyed than I expected to be at the XB1 shortcomings in side-by-side comparisons.

I'm not at the point of regretting I bought the XB1, though.  I had a blast with Titanfall and I'll probably hop back in if they ever have DLC that adds more mechs instead of just more maps.  I don't even regret getting a Kinect version of the XB1, at least, not yet.  If another year goes by and there's still no Kinect game I can play with my 4-year-old?  The regret may come then.

Last gen the Xbox was my platform for games while the PS was my blu-ray player and Sony exclusive player, and now they seem to have swapped roles.

My description of the elf thing?  There are a few other things that happen in the books aside from just sock gifting.

Yes, that sounds silly to me. I don't want to read a book where giving an elf a sock sets it free. That goes against everything that an elf is to me! I am sure I have read books with similar silly things, but that along with what I know of the series, doesn't make it seem like something I would want to read. As I said though, I tried to read the first one, and I have seen parts of the movies, I wasn't impressed. I don't understand many things from current pop culture, but HP is one of the greater mysteries to me. That and Big Bang Theory.

(When it comes to books, movies, and TV I disagree with GT/OO etc about 99% of the time.)

The elves are treated as personal slaves and are below the lowest class.  They aren't even allowed to wear clothes, so they make do with pillowcases or other discarded rags.  The gift of clothing from their master is a symbolic gesture used to signify the master is granting the elf freedom.  In this situation, the article of clothing was only a sock because Harry wanted to trick the elf's master into granting his freedom, and he needed a piece of clothing small enough to pull off the plan.

In Harry Potter, house elves are elves made into servant slaves.  They get set free if you give them clothing, and SPOILER ALERT in the books one of them is freed by being given a sock.  In the above, Legolas the Tolkein elf is given a sock and he reacts as if he is given freedom as with Harry Potter elves.

So in Harry Potter elves are trying to be Fabulous?  Fabulous

I think what makes it particularly bad is that it combines multiple forms of badgraphicary.  If it was just MS Paint stick figures, no problem.  I had a ton of fun with Kingdom of Loathing:

But combine MS Paint stick figures with weird gradients, textures, color choices, and haphazard alignment of everything, and it's a shock to the senses.  Oh man, my senses.

But yeah, I have to try it anyhow since it's getting such overwhelmingly good word of mouth.

But then a number of people tell you it works even with the graphics.  Do you continue to ignore it?

I don't, but this game seems to reach such new heights of badgraphicary that it's easier for me to relate to people who stay away from it for just that reason.  Harder for me to relate to people who won't even try Minecraft or Dwarf Fortress.
