...the figures just don't add up at all. Especially since Microsoft says that they'll make their money back in a fiscal year (by June 2015). Wow. Just...wow.

That doesn't mean what people are reading it to mean.

http://www.polygon.com/2014/9/15/6153497/microsoft-minecraft-2-billion-deal

Break-even just means, in this context, that it will do better than the equivalent amount of money doing essentially nothing but passively earning interest. Which, given that Mojang has hefty sources of real income, isn't exactly a stretch by any means. They're not predicting they're going to take in $2.5 billion in less than a year.

ummmm

Well, sure. But if people aren't getting it, and they're not (which is fine, the language is confusing), it bears repeating. Apologies if I offended by reiterating.

No, no offense was made.  I just felt a little like old Bullwinkle for a second.  biggrin

Your umm would have been better directed if you quoted just Destructor instead of Clanwolfer. : )

Does it even make you move faster in this game?

Harder to hit (for some).

Is that what bunny hopping means nowadays?  I thought it referred to the weird diagonal crouch hop people did to run faster.

I was referring to the practice of hopping or boost-hopping or double-hopping or hop-strafing all over the map instead of running. It is kind of amusing. The maps that have a lot of outdoor areas look like a massive flea circus, with players bounding all over.  I think it makes them harder to hit because the hit detection or whatever the game uses to determine hits and misses is less accurate across all 3 axis. But maybe I just suck.

The days of 2-dimensional shooter games are pretty much over.  More and more shooters are intentionally increasing the use of the 3rd axis in both movement and level design, Destiny included.  You're supposed to be using your special jumping/floating abilities to jump/float and be a less predictable target.  To counter it, you're supposed to have to spend more time aiming at players in the air.

I'm not sure what you mean by the hit detection being less accurate across the 3rd axis.

melee attack speed bonus explained

short version: swing 14% faster with the bonus, or about .92 seconds for a swing instead of 1.07 seconds.  The effect does not stack if you have two items with the bonus.

Did some Control multiplayer and all it did was make me remember how much I hate the bunny hopping.

There should be a "Pogo-Kill" achievement and some sort of pogo-stick-melee-weapon.

It's like Easter out there.

It's basically Halo.  Run at a target and whoever melees first wins.

Melee hits aren't a one hit kill in most situations for full health targets.  I also have yet to see anyone bunny hopping.  Does it even make you move faster in this game?

Has anyone had a good/bad experience working with MS for a faulty disc drive?  Mine still mostly works but more often than not it now fails at identifying a blu-ray disc on the first try or two.

I want to get it fixed since it's the primary movie-machine for the kiddos, but I also don't want to lose access to Destiny for weeks and weeks right now if the turnaround time is terrible.

Which part are you saying 'barely' to?

I also ran a few crucible matches and finally managed a decent game.  I may be officially too old for this shit.  MP doesn't seem particularly suitable for the Scout/Sniper rifle build I favor as the range of most fights is handgun/shotgun range.

I did a lot better with sniping once I found a sniper rifle with a lower zoom scope option.  Even on the most wide open maps, that zoom level seems more than enough.

I futzed around with it for a long time when it first came out.  It was a fantastic sandbox and I had quite a bit of fun.  That said, the crazy way it has taken off is a bit surprising to me.

Aside from being a giant lego sandbox, it can also be an exploration survival horror game.  That's how I liked to play it.  There's even a sense of 'levelling up' through you trying to upgrade your equipment through the material tiers.  You need better equipment materials to be strong enough to go deeper in the mines to get better materials for better equipment so you can go deeper, etc., just like a traditional RPG.

Anyone have a dummies guide to all the daily/weekly game chores I should be doing?

  • I should be getting 100 marks every week before the cap resets on Tuesday
  • I should be doing a "daily heroic?"  What's that, the strike mission?
  • There's also a "weekly heroic?"
  • Raids are different than the strike missions, and not yet in the game?  Are they going to have time limits?
  • Other stuff?

This quote can also apply to Titanfall, oddly enough.
When I hit 15 with my Warlock I switched my subclass to Sunsinger to try that out.  Now I get to set people on fire by palming them.  While it doesn't entirely make up for losing my nova bomb ball of dark deathly greatness, it is rewarding to fire palm things.  I just wish the subclass was named something like Sunwielder, or Pyroblaster, or something more intimidating.  Although...he does create kind of sunny disco ball above his head when he uses his new super power named...Radiance.

Until just today I thought the class name was Sunslinger.  If that works for you, slinging the power of the sun is a bit more intimidating than just singing about the sun.

I've been ignoring story missions since circa level 7, and last night I tried one scaled to level 20 (the one with the sword).  The first 90% of the mission was not scaled, so every enemy was still level 8 or so.  It wasn't until the very end that the enemies finally got bumped up to 20, right when I got to the no-respawn warning.  Even with the enemies at 20, the difficulty level seemed on the easy side.  Maybe it was because I had so many more abilities and equipment perks at 20 than you'd expect to have at 7-8?

Ok, before I drop money on a faction starter item tonight:

Does their inventory rotate? I've been favoring hand cannons lately but I don't see any available in two of the faction vendors. I thought I read they do rotate, but I don't see a "inventory refresh in ____" counter.

If I'm playing PVP while wearing a faction item, do I stop all progress on the default Crucible city faction? Everything diverts to faction whose flag I'm wearing?

If so, is the option of not selecting a faction as viable an option as selecting one of the opt-in three? I know you lose your ability to totally focus on two stats with an opt-in faction, but does the default faction has items as good as the others?

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, I'm just starting into that but from my first steps it does look like it could potentially be super grindy.

I'm surprised you find the road to 20 grindy.  At times I even felt I was levelling too fast and not getting a chance to use a good gear drop for very long before it became obsolete.  I felt like every mission or match I was getting new skills or weapon upgrades.

Now that I've hit 20 and am looking at what I need to do to keep progressing, I can see how the end-game could be grindy.  For the immediate future I still get to fill bars on my 2nd subclass, but I can't tell how much of a sense of progression I'll feel with everything else.

How does level-based damage scaling work in PVP?  If I have a good weapon for my level, but then I level up, will I then do less damage in PVP because my weapon is no longer cutting edge for my level?
142  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Destiny -Bungie's new game with Activision on: September 12, 2014, 02:27:48 PM
Bullwinkle, before level 20 there's also an option to increase the difficulty of a story mission before you start it. When I looked at it, it seemed to raise the level of the mission about 2-3 levels.

Leeroy Jenkins and Starving Buzzard got nerfed:

Quote
Leeroy Jenkins now costs 5 (up from 4)
Starving Buzzard now costs 5 (up from 2) and now has 3 Attack and 2 Health (up from 2 Attack and 1 Health)

People complaining, of course, but I'm happy about both changes (though the Buzzard one seems pretty extreme).

The card draw you could get from Buzzard was just insane for its low cost, and with the Unleash-the-Hounds combo it happens all one one turn so there wasn't much you could do to combat it.

The Leeroy change should help combat the stupid "Miracle Rogue" Multi-Leeroy Shadowstep combo, but I don't see how the nerf will help the new stupid multi-reincarnation 5000 Leeroy thing you can do with Shaman.

Either way on Leeroy, I'm super happy because I own a Leeroy and I'm looking forward to getting the full disenchant cash so I can swap him for something else.  Now to decide what other legendary to get.

The road to 20 seems fun and painless, at least.  Before playing, I wasn't sure how viable it would be for me to get all three classes to 20 but now it's looking like it won't be an issue at all.

Loving it... that is all

Yeah, I'm really happy with it so far.  I didn't touch the beta at all, so the whole thing is new to me.

I really like being able to bounce around between story missions, random-generated single player (is that called patrol?), and multiplayer.  In games like CoD, I loved the multiplayer but rarely bothered with single player.  In games like GTA, I was all over the single player but the multiplayer felt tacked on.  With Destiny, all the options seem fun and viable so far, and it's great that they're all integrated so your progress in one area contributes to the others.

I was a little worried about the limited number of classes, but now it's looking like the subclasses are pretty distinct.  Playing in multiplayer also whets my appetite for classes I didn't think I was interested in--nothing like seeing another player pull off something amazing to make you want to do the same thing.

I'm very happy about the speed of progression.  I'm only level 11 or so, but seeing how quickly people got to 20 it doesn't look like I'm going to hit any absurd leveling curves anytime soon.  The pace of getting new abilities seems spot on, I feel like I'm always getting to try something new.  The great speed of progression also makes me happy about the prospect of trying the other classes and leveling them all up.  So far, I haven't seen anything that's going to feel like a grind.

Gameplay itself seems great, too.  I was having a blast soloing the single player campaign, and I had a blast playing multiplayer with the GT crew.

My only big complaint I can think of is with the home base city.  It just doesn't really have any of the illusion of being a living center of operations that I got from cities in other MMOs.  There's no personality.

I suspect there's not much help for me, but I'll inquire any way.

I made it to the first mission after the hub (to get a ward drive or whatever) but couldn't get past it.  The first section was OK, and there were a couple other strangers with me.  But at some point you get some warning and then the other players vanish and there's a ton of bad guys which I just can't get past without dying again and again, and they seem to reset each time so I can't even whittle them down.  Am I missing something or is this just another one of those FPS games I can never get far in?  Oddly I can't even lower the difficulty to "1" - they only have the option for "2" - Normal and "3" - Hard.  Is that correct?

I was thinking that maybe I simply cannot play FPS, but then I remembered the one time I was successful - that was Hellgate London.  I had no trouble in that game, so what I'm saying is it's not 100% me lol.

Just a thought ritt, have you tried turning your aim sensitivity really really low?  When I first tried to make the switch from mouse & keyboard to console shooters, I had a hell of a time getting used to doing quick analog stick aiming.  It was a whole new muscle skill to do a slight tilt to do finer movements--I kept on doing large-scale movements and overshooting my target.  Dropping down the sensitivity for a bit helped mitigate that and give me a chance to get used to things, and then I started moving the sensitivity back up.

Another shot in the dark possibility, what weapon are you using?  Is there any chance you're using the full-auto rifle and keeping the trigger held down too long?  Maybe you're starting to fire while off-aim and by the time you get on target your accuracy has gone to crap?  You might be better off using the burst fire pulse rifle, so you get forced to slow down and aim more carefully before each trigger pull.

Man, I'm interested to hear others thoughts on this too.  Mine are 7 and 4, and I don't want to be a prude, but I'd be hard pressed to let them play an online game at this age.  Maybe this is because all crap i heard playing MW2 and everything else.

The online games where you can only talk in emotes are pretty safe as far as player interactions go.
