Sorry, I thought that was obvious.  The Japanese music from the Japanese version of the game.  I wish the English version had an option to play that music, but, again, I understand that would be next to impossible.

I imagine storage capacity is a big limiter with these games since there's so much audio, and they're trying to keep the audio high quality.  I believe the DS cartridge can hold up to 128MB, but most games seem to stay under the 64MB barrier.  For Ouendan that leaves at most 4MB a song.  I wonder if they squeezed all 19 Elite Beat songs into 64MB as well or if they opened it up to 128.

It's too bad it's only one workout per CD, $15 each workout seems a little steep.  It does look (sound) like it could be pretty effective, I'll recommend it to my girlfriend.  (Not that I'm saying they're girly!  I just do most of my own cardio in the pool)

How many volumes did you buy, and does that amount seem like enough to not be too repetitive?

Since i haven't gotten there yet, which chest do we NOT open and where at in the game is it?  I'm still in the sewers after escaping the palace.

I can check the guide when I get home, but I'm pretty sure you've already passed them.  A couple of them were in Lowtown and Rabanastre iirc, so you've probably already opened them.

I'm not certain, but I think you can even come across the first chest before you even get the tutorial on grouping with Penelo.    So silly.

I do wish there was an option to have the Japanese music, but I guess that would actually change gameplay (ie you couldn't just plug in the other song), but it's still a great game.  And like all Japanese games, I'm pulling in a steady C on everything.  I wish they'd be more encouraging.

What Japanese music are you referring to?  Ouendan is Japanese only, Elite Beat is English only.

Anybody care to make suggestions for Game Cube games?
I'd like to try Odama.
Is Fire Emblem good? Other turn-based (or action) RPGs?
I know RE4 is supposed to be awesome, but it's not my kind of game.

Off the top of my head, I'd recommend:
Zelda Wind Waker
Pikmin
Eternal Darkness
Paper Mario
maybe Metroid Prime
Super Monkey Ball
Mario Kart
Viewtiful Joe (was that GC exclusive?  can't remember)

I seem to have zero interest in it.  The ONLY game remotely appealing to me is Zelda and I can play it on a $60 Cube, so, no purchase for me.

Playing the devil's advocate, but impressions across the board suggest that the Cube version is quite the lesser of the two.
I've heard they're identical, save for the controller schemes.

The control scheme on the Wii version is a pretty big deal to some. You could copy and paste a variety of impressions from various sites, and most of them seem to agree that they'd much prefer to play Zelda with the Wii setup than with the Cube's.

But - and I may be wrong - I was also under the impression that there were some additions to the actual Wii version of the game that the Cube lacks.

Well, there's fishing, and the cursor fairy.

What the heck is the 2nd analog stick on the classic controller for if it can't be used for Gamecube games?

N64 games?

Are there 6 buttons on the right hand side of the VC? I don't have an image infront of me to look, so I don't know if it does or not.

Do you think they'd use the right analog stick in place of the yellow buttons on the N64 controller?  That seems like it'd work fine for games where the yellow buttons are for camera control.  It's been so long, were there many games that used the yellow buttons as actual buttons?

Either way, I don't think I'm going to be using that right stick much at all since I'm really only interested in the pre-N64 virtual console offerings.

10172  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 Launch Thread on: November 07, 2006, 11:25:54 PM
How is philosophy not relevant when you're talking about what people think are right and wrong?  My philosophy on what's right and wrong is how I choose my actions in life.  If I feel like some action isn't right, raising the cash payout isn't going to make it right.

Quote from: jblank
Why would I feel guilty since this is almost by itself paying for her gift?

Am I completely misinterpreting this statement, or are you saying that the large amount of profit involved is in itself a reason why you should not feel guilty?
10173  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 Launch Thread on: November 07, 2006, 10:54:51 PM
Maybe because the ends don't justify the means?

Some philosophers argue that it is still wrong to steal that loaf of bread even if it's for your starving family.

If you want to go extreme on the morality scale, Gandhi's belief in non-violence extended to Hitler's Germany, he thought peaceful resistance was still the right way despite any additional suffering that path might bring.

And now that I've fulfilled Godwin's Law and lost the thread, does that mean this debate can die or at least keep contained in a single thread so we can talk about the consoles again?

You know, that's not a bad rule of thumb, I just might adopt that.

My rule with the PS3 is simple..  40"+ HDTVs must be $500 or less, and the console has to have at least had 1 major price drop and a wide selection of fairly low priced USED titles.  Then I will buy one..  With the new LaserHDTV units with 90% acuity coming out next year, I think the reality will be sooner rather than later.
My HDTV threshold is about the same, I'm monitoring 40" prices as well, but I could see myself cracking at the $600 mark.

I'm still eagerly waiting to see what Best Buy is going to offer HDTVwise this Black Friday.

People have different beliefs, jblank.  Don't get so frustrated if someone thinks what you're doing is wrong if you don't think it's wrong.  Who cares what anyone else thinks?

In this case its invalidated because the argument they are making is beyond absurd.

I care, because when someone turns buying and selling a console into a moral issue, yes, it IS wrong and by God I am going to challenge that, and explain WHY they are wrong.

I have said about 63,298 times in these threads on this issue, that I have no problem with people disagreeing on this issue, I am fine if someone feels its wrong to sell them and make money, I cannot make it any clearer. But, when someone judges me, PERSONALLY, and attacks me as being greedy, selfish, immoral, and unwilling to "do what is right for gaming society", then I am going to call bullshit, and challenge them on that also.

I hate to be so blunt, but people, it's a fucking video game console!!!! This isn't anything that is going to fix or hurt, our social inequalities, or the litany of other problems we face in the world today, so please, stop treating it as such. (thats not a comment to you Misguided)

Life as we know it does not have to be at stake for something to be wrong.  I think it's wrong for Bob from accounting (who's clearly at fault) to let his temp take the heat for the Linderman project losing revenue, but somehow I think the world will keep on turning.

I can see how the license board is a double-edged sword in some respects.  On one hand, you can sculpt the character how you want them.  Personally, I love that method.  The only thing missing is being able to adjust their stats.
You can adjust their stats through the augment licenses, no?

Is there a guide somewhere that addresses what each character is predisposed to?  Or is it really just completely freeform...Basch could be your lightly armored white mage and Penelo could be your sword & board tank without detriment?

I don't know if I can handle the freeform licenses!  The min/maxer in me needs to have each person naturally be best at something!

Nothing is really going to prepare anyone for the new expert mode.  It really is pretty ungodly hard.  After about 45 minutes of trying, I managed to limp my way through the solo of Sweet Child of Mine.  Got up to Freya, and crapped out before the section you were talking about, but I remember it being almost the same thing, except it went 1-5-4 instead of 1-5-34.
I think you're thinking of the hard mode version?  I haven't gotten there on expert yet, but hard Freya has that long stretch of 1-5-4 that's quite the endurance test.

10196  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Guitar Hero help! on: November 02, 2006, 10:45:18 PM
I'm sure it varies, but I think most places that give lessons require you to have an acoustic or classical guitar.

For a good deal on beginner lessons, I would check your local community colleges and adult schools.  They'll be group classes, but as long as the class isn't enormous they should be able to give you enough individual attention to make sure you've got proper form and all that.

One possibility for more affordable individual lessons is to look around at billboards at any nearby colleges that have music students.  You might find a starving music student who's advertising guitar lessons on the side.

Other than that, I think things get pretty expensive at your local music stores, but hopefully someone with more experience can chime in.

I told myself I'd play through every song once on medium before moving up, but you're really making me want to bump it up sooner to see the more interesting fingering patterns.  I think tonight I'll see how far I can get on hard before failing a song.

Right now, I'm in the middle of the fifth tier of songs.  On Freya, there's a long section with really rapid green then orange notes alternating.  I've also run into that a few times before on the hard difficulty.

I don't know that song, but any chance those rapid green/orange stretches are all set as hammer on/pull off notes?  If they are, I wonder if you're meant to play them as if you were right hand finger tapping?  That would be friggin awesome.
10200  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Guitar Hero help! on: November 02, 2006, 06:36:04 PM
I wouldn't say Guitar Hero is nothing like playing a real guitar.  The game certainly won't let you pick up a real guitar and play a song, but I would think it would help someone develop a sense of the coordination between left hand fingering and right hand strumming, and maybe other concepts?

As far as learning the guitar, I may be biased but I think it's a very approachable instrument to just pick up and learn on your own.  If you can get lessons, by all means go for it, it will be money well spent.  But I think you can learn a lot by yourself.

It's pretty straightforward to learn the basic chords, and without even touching barre chords (where you lay your index finger across all the strings higher on the neck) you can play a lot of songs with just the basic basic A through G chords.  Add in a few minor chords which are just one finger different than the standards and you can play even more songs.  You'd be surprised at how many songs are just made up of three or four easy chords.

Tablature (tabs) are extremely simple to follow and available all over the place online.  You can look up just about any song in the world and get a color by numbers version to play.  From there you just have to work on getting faster.  Most of the tabs are good at giving diagrams for the chords they use, but buying a simple chord book would be a good investment.

Really, if Guitar Hero is getting you interested in the real hobby, I say just go for it.

But I'm biased, I bought my first electric guitar largely because of Guitar Hero.  I had an acoustic guitar years ago but I never got much past beginner-intermediate ability, Guitar Hero inspired me to pick up the hobby again and I'm having a lot of fun and I'm already much better than I used to be.  I'll have to post a picture of my setup, I usually have my Guitar Hero controller standing up next to my real guitar and amp, very fun.

The hardest part is making sure you keep practicing.  I personally find that a strong way to keep up motivation is to live with an attractive red-headed girlfriend who thinks it's hot when you play Chris Isaak's Wicked Game for her.  (And it's a really easy song!)
