Sorry, I think officially you have to wait for your perfectly fine one year old CRT monitor to die before you can justify a shiny new LCD.  I recommend keeping it placed at the very edge of your desk, with a 2" overhang.  It wouldn't be a bad idea to run the cord across a hallway.

10 hours is pretty accurate.  I just took out the last guy and saw the ending.  Now I have a sandbox to play in with no bad guys. frown   Review will be hitting soon. smile

So there's no way to 'reset' the world with your pumped-up character? What a load of crap.

Ahhh poo that is dissapointing.

Wait, you sure about this?  I thought for sure that I had heard you gain the ability to toggle crime on and off after you beat all the kingpins.  The kingpins don't come back, but you can refight them in some other bonus game mode.

edit: Here's something someone said:

Quote
To the person who said there's no one to kill: Once you beat it, go back to the title screen, and load your game again. It gives you the option to turn on "crime," which essentially means the gangs are back, only without their gang bosses.

From Joystiq:

Quote from: Joystiq
Dengeki Online has today posted Nintendo of Japan's latest release schedule, which includes mention of the long-awaited sequel to -- drum-roll for nervous anticipation -- Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan (which was rejigged for the West as Elite Beat Agents). There's no release date mentioned other than a non-specific "during 2007." Four-player action is confirmed, though, as is the new sensation's snappy title: Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Tamashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan. Got all that? Quick translation: Burn! Hot-Blooded Rhythm Spirit, Yo! Fight! Cheerleading. Need we say more?

EBA is one of my favorite games EVAR!!  Would I like Ouendan if I won't know any of the music?  How would one obtain a copy of this game?

You can get it from ebay or from a place like Play-Asia, Lik-Sang used to be an option but I think they're still dead.  I got my copy from ebay.

And no question about it, you would definitely like Ouendan if you liked EBA so much.  You don't need to know any of the music, they're very catchy tunes.  The scenarios are very fun, and the illustrations are done well enough that the language barrier is nonexistant.

It is more expensive than you're used to paying for DS games, but I don't think you'll regret your purchase one bit.   As an EBA fan you really owe it to yourself to check this out.

Dengeki is supposed to be pretty reliable, right?

From Dengeki Online, it sounds like there will be an Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! 2 this year.

Here's a flawless Google translation:
Quote
'Pushing patience! Fighting obtaining! Cheer group 2' sale decision! The nintendo co. sale schedule renewal Nintendo Co. this day February 21st, renewed the sale schedule of the game software of the same company. As the information which this time is updated anew, popularity rhythm action game 'pushing patience! Fighting obtaining! The software for DS which becomes the continuation of cheer group' 'burn! Thermal blood rhythm soul pushing patience! Fighting obtaining! Cheer group 2' being sold within 2007 decides. The software 'Wii health pack for Wii (the tentative name)' and 'disaster (the tentative name)' sale time within 2007 is announced in other things. Details description below are reference

Can anyone confirm this rumor?  If it really is within 2007 decides, we may be getting cheer group' 'burn! Thermal blood rhythm soul pushing patience! Fighting obtaining! Cheer group 2 sooner than I think anyone was expecting.

My fear is that this is just going to be a Japanese adaptation of Elite Beat Agents, but I'll stay optimistic.  (Was EBA already released in Japan?)

Those of you who enjoyed Elite Beat Agents but never tried the first Ouendan really should consider importing the original, great great game.

What part of building a computer yourself are you scared of?  The hairiest part is installing the processor and heat sink, and maybe getting the motherboard seated properly.  If you buy a barebones system that part is already done for you, and the rest is nothing more than using a screwdriver and plugging in cables.

I've been replaying this over the weekend, and I am amazed at how much my girlfriend likes spectating this game.  She's not drawn to many games, she likes Wii Sports and Warioware, she liked directing Inigo Prophecy since it was movielike, but I never expected her to be drawn into an action hack'em'up, especially one so bloody and violent.

She said she liked the look of Kratos, with the tatoos and everything.  She particularly liked the setting, with all of the mythical beasts and gods, and ancient temples.  Especially with the nice soundtrack, I guess a lot of the game reminded her of the Mummy movies she likes a lot.

FYI it's a lot more exhilarating fighting off a giant minotaur sent by Hades when you've got a beautiful girl jumping up and down on the couch yelling "get him get him don't die he's almost dead go go kill him!"

Eurogamer also rated this a 9.0, and present company excepted, they may be my favorite review site on the net. I understand Ron's frustrations just from playing the multiplayer beta for some time, though. Only your prototype level units ever have a sense of individuality or anything else that might separate them from the mass of fodder-and you are right, all the units are just eventually fodder. There is no experience, no growing for them. They fight until they die. Its a very very macro, strategic way of looking at what is essentially a tactical exercise, adn I think some will love it and others will dislike the impersonality of it.

I read that the units do have 5 levels of experience.  I see no indication of experience level in the demo.  But I have seen some stats on the units and there does seem to be enhancments based on experience level.

OK I have seen no such experience levels in several months of the beta or the demo either-that would be welcome though.

Tom Chick mentioned the veterancy recently:

Quote from: Tom Chick
Also, to clarify something mentioned earlier in the thread, it seems that units do indeed have individual levels of veterancy.  According to this database taken from the demo, there are five levels of veterancy.  At the first and third level, each unit does more damage.  At the second, fourth, and fifth levels, units gain more hit points and the rate at which they automatically heal themselves.  This is, however, completely undocumented in the final game.

Nothin' beats cheap craps!  Casino Royale in Vegas supposedly gives you 100x odds on the pass line, you used to be able to get those odds at the Sahara, but I think they changed it to 5x.

Oh, and just to keep up the statistics fun (Yay! Fun with statistics!) if you did indeed take advantage of the 100x odds, you'd shrink the house edge to just 0.02%, as long as you avoided all of the side bets and just stuck to the pass line and odds.

TML is the roulette king.  He knows a fairly time-intensive strategy for that game which virtually assures you to come out ahead if you're playing with a couple bucks at a time.

I'm sorry but that's just not true.  I mean, superstition is fun and all in a casino, and I'm not above having a lovely lady blow on my dice for good luck, but there's no way to strategize in roulette and increase your odds.  You either play with a house advantage of 2.7% on a single zero wheel, or you play with a house advantage of 5.26% with the more common double zero wheels.  No matter what kind of bet or crazy combinations you bet on the table, the odds all come out the same.

Any chance TML's system is a variation on the Martingale system, where you double a losing bet so you can regain your losses?

Now I just need to find a way to hook it up to the network-

You should not think about simply mooching off of a neighbor's wireless network, even though the Wii is only going to be using the connection very intermittently since you can't yet game online.  Although it would be a ridiculously easy thing to do while you figure out your future plans for your home network, you'd be buying yourself an express ticket to the minimum security white collar sin version of Hell.

So don't even think about it.

actually that didn't even cross my mind.  They have 2 different network adapters for the Wii but a wireless router is only about 20 bucks more and will likely get more use in the future than the adapters.

Well, I definitely think that buying a wireless router is a better long run path than buying the network adapter.  I was just pointing out that that right now all the Wii is going to do online is download occasional updates and a few 500k-2MB retro games, which won't really be all that taxing to a network.  But if you're ready and willing to do the upgrade to wireless, by all means go right ahead.
10197  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Casinos on: February 15, 2007, 06:01:13 PM
If you want your money to last a bit, the best odds are in blackjack and craps.  If you like blackjack, you need at the very least memorize the basic strategy and be fine with giving up any independent decision-making ability.  Add a very basic (it's not really that hard) card counting strategy, and you can cut the house advantage down pretty low.  That's the closest you're going to get to a chance of winning, your odds will only be slightly worse than flipping a coin.

Craps is the next best thing, statistics wise, to blackjack.  You need to ignore all the fancy side bets, find a table with the best odds (betting rules) you can, and just stick to the basic basic bets.  Worse chance of winning than blackjack, but still a lot closer to 0% house advantage than you'll find anywhere else in the casino.

Expect to lose your money a lot faster at any other game in the house.  But of course, it's all about having fun, so if blackjack and craps aren't your thing, have fun wherever you like.

And the above advice is sound.  Choose beforehand how much you are willing to lose, and walk away when you lose that much.  If you're doing well, pocket $100 or whatever and play with the rest, that way at the very worst you'll come out $100 ahead.

I'm not a Texas Hold'em guy myself, so I'll leave the poker advice to others.  I will say that you should expect it to feel a lot different than playing with your buddies or online.

I think I'm going to have to try out the flying V controller in a store first, it doesn't look like it'll be as comfortable as the SG.  I seem to remember someone saying that the strap placing and balance makes it sit a little bit weird if you're standing, and it doesn't nestle in your lap very well if you want to play sitting.
