I just watched this trailer, and I don't know what to think.  It certainly looks interesting, but there's something about the style that doesn't sit right with me.  I think I'll have to wait and see some forum impressions.
What specifically about the style?

I can't put my finger on it.  The combat looked a little clumsy, the high pitched voice sound bites (are those a part of the game?), the way it looked like you have to pull out the stylus for spells or minigames, some of the art design...just overall it raised some red flags.  I'm not out for sure, I just need to hear more reviews and impressions to make sure it's up my alley.

I sat around most of the time twiddling my thumbs, waiting for things to build.

You can hit + and - on your numpad to speed up or slow down the gameplay.  While some of the basic troops do seem a bit slow to build, is there any chance your metal or energy was bottomed out, slowing it even further?

A couple questions of my own:

What is the counter to shields?  You've got anti-nukes to counter nukes, shields to counter artillery and bombing, but how do you bring down shields?  Upgraded, they're big enough to cover the tech 3 power plants, so you can't bring them down by dropping the power, (and the power consumption doesn't even seem all that bad.)  Is there anything you can do besides a ground assault?

Is there any way to regain the sea from land?  Messing around in one skirmish, I ended up stranded on land with my waters filled with patrolling enemy subs and destroyers.  It seems like the torpedo launcher's built in sonar is outranged by the enemy boats, so I need to build both a torp launcher and a sonar unit to regain that foothold.  Aside from the torpedo aircraft, is there any way to effectively hold off a navy from land, to give some time to build a defense for a naval factory?

By the way, I love how you can tell a factory to repeat a cycle of queued up units.  Instead of having a single type of unit on infinite build, you can set a factory to build 5 tanks, 3 artillery, 3 anti-air, 1 anti-radar, then again automatically build 5 tanks, 3 artillery, etc., over and over.  That's just super.  But is there any way to interrupt the queue and insert a one time build without deleting the whole sequence?  For instance, can I tell it to stop the queue and build one engineer and then go back to what it was doing?

I missed my chance to try and convince you you have to pump your arms as if you were running as the game uses the microphone to detect the air rushing over the DS as you pump your arms.  icon_frown

I think I love it, but it's running too poorly on my system for me to know for sure.

I got some of that "TA giddiness" with the transports.  In just a few clicks I can have a team of transports ferrying units to the front line taking as circuitous a path as I like, with fighter intercepters escorting them wherever they go.  When the front line moves, I can move the transport path end point.  If a new threat appears along the route, I can just drag one of the intermediate ferry waypoints to alter the path.

I really wish they had implemented more command automation, especially with the large scale of the game.  I should be able to, from the zoomed out strategic map, designate forward defense points or production bases, and have construction units know on their own how to build these bases.  I should be able to set some critical mass at a rally point before a massing of ferried units knows to automatically set out together to the enemy.  Instead of patrolling air units fighting whatever they happen to come across, I should be able to have air units parked at a base, set to fly out and intercept any enemy planes that fly into designated areas.

I may be a dreamer, but I think those features are the kind of thing that Chris Taylor is heading towards.  If Cavedog had lived, I think the SupCom innovations would have been in a TA sequel some years earlier, and right now SupCom would have my wishlist features and more.

So anyways, the demo does seem impressive to me.  I can especially see how much fun the huge maps would be, taking the epic battles I remember on the big TA maps to a whole new level.  The demo would've raised me from "wait and see" to "day 1 purchase" if the demo didn't also make it clear that my computer can't run the game.

I've got an Athlon 64 3500, 2gig ram, and a 6800 GT, and the game quickly slows down to 1-2 fps as the unit count goes up.  I don't see myself upgrading until I build a Vista rig, which is probably a year away.  On the plus side, in a year when I can play SupCom there should be some amazing user mods for the interface, AI, and unit balance--and maybe I'll own a 2nd monitor by then!

Your problem is solely the video card. I have an Athlon 64 3000, 1gig of shitty DDRRAM, but recently upgraded to a special edition 7900GTO from an ATIX850XT. I went from single digit framerates to about 15 in high unit count situations and 30+ with low density.

You are making me get a little tempted to upgrade, but I feel like I'm at sort of an all-or-nothing point with my system.  If I get a new video card, especially if it's for SupCom, I'm going to want a DirectX 10 video card.  This means I need a new mobo, as my current one is still AGP.  If I'm getting a new mobo, then it's time to go dual core, and well...it all adds up quickly.

Sadly I think I do need to wait to build my new rig before I can play SupCom, which could easily be a year away depending on how quickly the DirectX 10 cards drop in price.

Thanks for the great tips bob-but what in the holy hell is "cursor memory turned on"?

It's a setting that makes the cursor in the action menu automatically go to the last thing you commanded, instead of starting at the top of the menu.

Just find it in the in-game menu? Is this a lot more useful for stealing Pug?

I don't remember for sure, as I am easily distracted by new shiny things and my FFXII has been neglected, but I thought it was in the regular options menu?  I'd assume it'd make stealing easier simply by making it quicker to select over and over each battle.  I didn't do that method myself, I just had Vaan set to automatically steal from 100% health enemies.

From the Xbox website, it sounds like system updates are on the internal flash memory:

Quote
System Updates

The first time you connect your Xbox 360 system to Xbox Live, the service updates your console's flash memory with all improvements made between the day the console was manufactured and the day you brought it home.

Your console will receive additional updates at varying intervals as Xbox programmers continue to innovate and refine both the Xbox 360 system and the Xbox Live service.

And maybe the forum ignore feature needs to just let the moderators choose who to force to ignore who.  How about a little self control on the squabbling, guys?  It's to the point where I'd expect KD to turn off the lights and make the whole class put their head on their desks for 10 minutes.

Does the lack of a hard drive not drastically increase load times? Does it not make it impossible to save games, without the purchase of a seperate ($30) memory card? Does it also not make the Xbox Live Marketplace completely worthless? Heck the video marketplace is already pretty worthless with only a 20GB hard drive in the Regular version.

Let's do this as briefly as possible.  I'd prefer you comment on the strategy of SKU design/pricing, but I realize that's not going to happen (as will be validated when PWC unseals the sealed envelope).

One statement:  "The Core 360 is useless."
Another statement:  "The Core 360 is not useless.  It has fewer uses than the Premium 360."

You've picked one.  I've picked the other.

Exeunt.

Did you buy the Core 360?  I can't fathom why someone would defend it.  The only situation I can think of where it isn't a waste of money is if you knew you didn't want to play anything on the system for the first several years and wanted to store it in the closet until a bigger hard drive was released so that maybe, despite having to purchase an ethernet cable, component cables, and being stuck with a wired controller, it might just save you money in the long run when you buy the new hard drive.

I would have expected a hard plastic case with the description you gave.

Why wouldn't you take him up on his offer to pay the return shipping for the item if you give him a refund?  Despite his tone, (which isn't all that tempermental,) that seems a generous offer from someone that didn't receive what they wanted.  He can take his refund money and look for the version of Mario Kart he wants, and you're right back where you started.  Sure, you lose the shipping cost, but so does he.  Why not be more mature about what was obviously a misunderstanding?

You have to be kidding me? Dude, the "misunderstanding" is his own fault.

Look, I took pictures of the item, and said IT COMES WITH EVERYTHING IT ORGINALLY CAME WITH, how much clearer do I need to be? The proof of what you are getting is IN THE PICTURE!!!!! How is it generous of him? He fucked up, not me. I ate the negative and immediately submitted a complaint form to ebay (and have already gotten acknowledgement that they will look into this) to get it removed, but even if that never happens, its ok, because although I am a flexible seller (you have to be) there is no way in hell I am gonna get raked over for someone elses screw up.

It's not a black and white thing.  Sure, the guy should've looked closer at the picture, (specifically, he should've made sure to look closely at the second picture that shows the card in a sleeve,) but it wouldn't have been bad for you to mention the non-standard case, or put in a "everything included in the picture."  It's easy to just glance at the first picture and assume it's a normal box.  That's why it's a misunderstanding, two people tried to communicate and something got lost along the way.

So sure, by the cold hard laws of internet trade, you did nothing wrong.  Also, he should've reacted in a civil manner and not assumed you were trying to cheat him.  Saying, "The package arrived, but I didn't see the case, did you forget to ship it?" would've been a better start to the conversation that likely would've ended better for both parties.

Bottom line, he's offering a reasonable resolution despite his frustration.  You are denying him because he offended you and insulted your integrity.  You are in the right, and you are not obligated to let him return the product, but in the end it was just a misunderstanding.  Why not be the bigger person and accept the reasonable solution he's offering?

Then again, he easily could've left negative feedback even after sending it back and getting his money and screwed you over anyways, but I guess I'm the type to give people the benefit of the doubt.  I like to think that practice pays off more often than it screws me over.

Michael Bay (or someone) insisted the Transformers actually obey conservation of mass laws when transforming, unlike in the cartoon.

From what I read this was originally the case but apparently they still have a soundwave style size change for one of the minor characters.

I think the size change for that character just uses telescoping parts to "grow", but he doesn't magically gain mass.  I believe he's a very large boombox that turns into a human sized robot.

Oh, and that Megatron is damn sexy, I must have one.

The reason for Megatron not being a gun is largely because of the laws passed where you can't make a real-looking toy gun.  Remember when the Zapper for the NES had a grey barrel, but later ended up with an orange one?  That's part of the reason.  If you try to find an original Megatron, it can run you a couple of hundred dollars because it is pretty scarse now.  Apparently Hasbro thought about remaking Megatron in blaze orange and did a prototype, but it just wasn't the same, obviously.

You mean they would have to...nerf Megatron?

Funny, though, that the nerfed Megatron looks more like the original than the new movie version.  If he has to be an alien spaceship, at least let him keep his face!

That looks interesting; though I admit I don't quite 'get' the game based on the pics...

In a nutshell you're trying to settle new areas while developing existing settlements.  The main gameplay element is resource trading.  Depending on what type of land your settlements border, you will gain access to several different types of resources.  You may end up having a surplus of lumber while you really need more livestock to build your next goal.  This brings forth the joke that never gets old: "Have wood for sheep!"

There are other elements that get thrown in, such as ports to control that give you special deals on certain resources, and the robber token that lets you deny access to a tile's resources.

Great great game, I hope this version turns out well.

If they're losing more money than they expected on the PS3, the PS3 must be selling better than expected?

A significant price drop would entice me to re-purchase as well, that Final Fantasy Tactics game just looks too good.

Did you play it multiplayer with 3 other opponents (or at least 2 others)?  That's when the game truly shines.  Trash talking, ninja-roping, worm slapping, Holy Hand Grenade throwing good times.

Maybe that's what I missed.

The immense satisfaction of sending a worm to their doom with a benign little prod...definitely a game to play multiplayer.
