Yeah, that's the HOTAs one that's out of my price range at $400. Plus without the stick twist I imagine you would want the rudder pedals which is another $200.

I was trying to say the combined price could be about $200, depending on sales.  That's about how much I paid for my setup.  Rudder pedals certainly would be nice, but I've been making do just fine using throttle buttons for my middle finger and ring finger to do rudder controls.

Buyin' a bunch-o-DLC for Evolve this week.

In the board game realm, probably Star Wars Armada.
3  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: HOTAS Flightstick/Throttle Reccomendations on: March 29, 2015, 10:25:06 PM
I highly recommend the CH Products stick and throttle. I think it'll run about $200 to get them both, depending on sales you can find. They're not as flashy as the Saitek stuff, but they're built like tanks and they've been in the business with great reviews since the early PC sim eras.

It has an analog joystick on the throttle which is great for fine control of lateral thrust in Elite Dangerous. It does not have twist for yaw on the joystick, which can be a negative, but twist on joysticks is also a common point of failure so the lack of one is tied to its better reliability.

Every time Kimmel does one of those sidewalk interview things it surprises me how full of shit people are, but I imagine there are probably a hundred other people that just say "I have no idea" and walk away.  You're almost guaranteed that the people who lie with their answers are going to just keep digging themselves and ignorance hole if you push them.

Especially if you push them in front of a camera.

I don't think this is entirely a case of people being full of shit (though that's surely a part of it in Kimmel's video).  It reminds me of this article about people being convinced to remember details about a crime they didn't commit.

Example from the article:
Quote
To test her theory, Loftus gave a group of volunteers the rudimentary outlines of a childhood experience: getting lost in a mall and being rescued by a kindly adult. She told the subjects, falsely, that the scenario was real and had taken place when they were young. (For verisimilitude, Loftus asked their parents for biographical details that she could plant in each story.) Then she debriefed the subjects twice, with the interviews separated by one or two weeks. By the second interview, six of the twenty-four test subjects had internalized the story, weaving in sensory and emotional details of their own. Loftus and other researchers have since used similar techniques to create false memories of near-drownings, animal attacks, and encounters with Bugs Bunny at Disneyland

I don't suppose you've seen a mod that changes Chirpy to just give straight useful information instead of trying to be cutesy/annoying with wording?  Ideally, I'd want Chirpy messages to display in the corner, not have an annoying sound, and just say "Cims are happy about low crime rates" instead of "goin' on vacation and leaving my door unlocked so you can water my plants!"

I've owned and played real guitars for most of my life but somehow that didn't stop Guitar Hero and Rock Band from being fun to play.  I guess if you're skilled enough to learn any new song in a matter of minutes and have extremely accessible bandmates you can have arrive at your house at will it might make Rock Band a little redundant, but I think it will be a while before I hit that point.

If I remember correctly, the only OO downtime we've had so far this year was limited to Pyperkub on February 19 at 3:25:12 pm, when he was using Comcast and Google DNS servers.  He even rebooted and flushed DNS to no avail, but then the issue seemed to resolve for him on its own.

I'm just going off memory, though.

I'm just a pseudo Apple fanboy, I don't drool over every Apple announcement and upgrade everything yearly, but I am fairly well equipped with a suite of iStuff.

I could see myself eventually being interested in a smart watch of some sort, but this first gen Apple one is too expensive and too ugly for me.  Someone poke me when they have a cheaper, thinner one with a circular face and better features and battery life.

Sir Jony is on record saying no round face because it cuts out too much space for the main purpose of reading text.

Which is silly because you can display just as much text on a round face, just with more extra screen on the edges.  I've fiddled with a friend's Moto 360 which looks pretty slick and manages to be round without the world crashing down around it.

I'll eat my hat if Apple doesn't release a round one in a few years, and maybe by then I'll want one.

I'd wager all the other manufacturers will switch to rectangular faces to copy Apple.

Let's make this interesting and turn it into a real wager.  In 3 year's time we'll see who's right, and the winner gets rittchard's watch.

You can click on a non-abandoned industry building to see the expected education level of its workers and the education they actually have. If there's the kind of mismatch I think you're having, the building will actually outright tell you that its workers are over-educated.

Oh, I did that and it does say that my workers are over-educated. It's just that it's just not a few buildings, every building in one several block area ended up being abandoned. I guess I'll have to build some run down neighborhoods Roll Eyes

I guess the moral of the story is that you can't expect to combine an urban city with farming. You should probably create a smaller town for the people who'll be doing the farming, next to the farms themselves, and then don't bother much with education in that area. Your highly educated cims (yeah, that's what they're called in this game) expect you to build offices, not farms.

I haven't fiddled with districts a whole lot yet, but maybe you could also make a residential district near your farming center that has policies to help keep education down?

I've only scratched the surface but so far it feels just like a new Sim City (in a good way.)  I was able to start up the game and play without hitting any server capacity issues or cloud save screwups, so it's already lookin' plenty better than EA's Sim City.

I really can't get into VR until I start seeing how games support it. No way am I buying more than one of these headsets because EA only supports one and Ubisoft supports another or whatever.

That's not going to happen. Unless a title is a paid exclusive, it's in those companies best interests to make their titles work on both available VR sets. The market will be small enough initially anyway, and they don't need to make it smaller.

Both? We've already got Valve, Sony, Oculus and I assume Microsoft.

Samsung Gear VR as well.

How well does your right eye see up close?  Since the VR screen is going to be just a few inches away from your eyes, even if something is very distant in the virtual game world, your right eye will only have to focus on an actual object that's just those few inches away.

This isn't true, which might sound crazy. There's a lens in front of each eye that bends the light so that it hits your eyes straight on. As far as your eyes can tell, what you're looking at is way off in the distance. Your ability (or lack of) to look at objects up close doesn't come into the picture.

If the display screen just showed nothing more than "Hello World", just how far would you say the lens would shift the apparent distance?

edit: Huh. Now I'm really confused. Poking around the internet, I see some people say the lenses let you focus all the way out to infinity, while others say they can use the Rift without glasses despite being extremely nearsighted.

I'm particularly interested in knowing how this will work since my wife has even worse vision than Zinfan.
