I wonder if there's a chance they'd add asynchronous play.  It'd be nice to be able to have a number of matches with forumers ongoing even if we never log on at the same time.

Maybe the theater upgraded the screen and or projector. I was getting so sick of half-assed 3D but this was almost as good as Avatar. The funny thing is I wanted to see it in good old 2D but I picked the wrong time and would have had to wait an hour.

It also depends what you're comparing it to.  Older fake 3d gave me the feeling of a pop-up diorama with noticeable layers of depth, and Winter Soldier didn't give me that feeling.  So that's definitely an improvement.  And my biggest issue with the Winter Soldier 3d was during the shakeycam fight sequences, so it's also possible it was the shakeycam I hated, or the combination of shakeycam and fake 3d.

To me the 3D in this movie was utterly horrible. Saving grace was that I liked the movie enough to get passed the 3D for most of it. Everyone that I went with pretty much agreed with me. It seemed like there were times where they tried to do tricks with the blur and bring into focus different things, with 3D the whole frame just became blurry. Most of the quick cuts/shaky cam fights were a blurry mess to me. I also left the movie with a pounding headache. Nothing has come close to Avatar in doing 3D well. Hence why I usually avoid it like the plague, only reason I went to this in 3D was that my boss was taking everyone out and I wanted to go to the new imax theater that opened up here. The imax screen is great and I loved the sound to bad every movie in that theater is going to be 3d so this is probably the last movie I will see in it.

This movie was done with faked post-processed 3d.  Pretty much any time I hate 3d in a movie, it's because it was fake 3d.  If the movie is actually filmed in 3d (or if it's a CGI movie that can still do it natively) I usually like the 3d or at least find it unintrusive.

I always check realorfake3d.com before seeing a 3d movie, but you can hardly expect the average viewer to make that effort.  Most people will just see crappily done 3d and make the same natural conclusion you did and avoid even well done 3d movies.

Polygon and Eurogamer are my two favorite sources for official reviews precisely because they're more stringent than the rest of the review pack.  I don't just look at a 6.5 score and halt a possible purchase; I view it as a red flag and then read the rest of the review to see if their reasons for the low score are things I can overlook.

They said they're adding users in alphabetical order by username, starting with S. on a weekly basis, based on the amount of server load they're maintaining.  So basically, the more I play, the less chance you have of getting in! icon_twisted

They're also doing their first character wipe tomorrow, so hopefully that's a sign they're getting ready to open the gates a wee bit more.

They're also unlocking all heroes for a couple days this week.  My free time is horrid this week, but if there's a particular hero you're curious about I'd be happy to give it a spin and give some impressions.

Had some time off so tried a bit of Titanfall this weekend.  I didn't have that great a time with it, fun in spots but the matchmaking seems really borked.  I got put into matches with guys who were level 40ish on their 5th or 6th prestige while I was level 3 on my first attempt to play.  This did not end well for me, just too much going on to even get a sense of the game play before I was shot over and over by players who obviously know so much more about what is going on.  I'm not sure I'll go back to it anytime soon, I'd have rather spent my time playing Dark Souls 2 on the 360.

[edit]  Ooops didn't review the thread before posting and so apologies for not being a beacon of light for this game Pug!  I'm sure it is fun for the right players, I'm just a wrong one [/edit]

I have no problem with your post.  My gripe would be if you continued to spend the next month reminding us of how much you didn't enjoy the game this one time you tried it.  I agree it's ridiculous to put you up against prestige 5/6 players when there are still an abundance of other newbie players you could have been matched up with.

I had a friend that managed a Peet's for a while and she names a number of reasons why beans from Peet's are objectively better than Starbucks beans.  Better quality control, higher standards for when to toss out product for not being fresh enough, etc.  She admittedly likely had some amount of bias, of course.  I like both.

Unlike your Bonavita, buying a bag of beans isn't really that big a commitment.  smile  Buy some Starbucks for one week, some Peet's the next, then some designer snob beans the next.

Buying a french press is also not that big a commitment. slywink  One big advantage that brewing method has is that it doesn't filter out any delicious coffee oils like brewing methods with a paper filter do.  You can actually see the extra deliciousness floating around on top after you brew a french press cup.
16  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Coffee at home on: April 11, 2014, 06:00:51 PM
Ok, I asked my coffee fanatic brother-in-law for his recommendation for your situation.

His first thought was a large Chemex, but he said you'd have to pour it into a preheated thermal carafe to keep it warm for your later pours.  Basically the same thing you'd have to do to keep a large french press brew warm.

But then he said if you can spend the money, Technivorm makes the best drip coffee makers.  More affordable but still great: Bonavita.  These drip makers get the temperature right.

He said anything you see for sale at Clive Coffee is going to be great.  Here's a link straight to their drip makers.
17  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Coffee at home on: April 11, 2014, 05:05:47 PM
They make really big french presses that can make enough coffee for your Saturday morning routine.  That one is 34 ounces.

If you go that route, though, you can't brew the coffee and then use the press as a pitcher for the next hour or two.  Since the beans remain in the french press after brewing, if you don't pour it all out into a cup or other container it will brew well past the stopping point and overextract (taste bad).
18  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Coffee at home on: April 11, 2014, 04:01:23 AM
The main problem with Mr Coffee and other similar drip coffee makers is that they just don't get the water hot enough.
19  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Coffee at home on: April 11, 2014, 12:40:37 AM
A press pot (also called French press) will get you strong coffee at home, but the cleanup is a little bit of a pain.

For almost as good a taste with a quick & easy cleanup, there's the Clever Coffee Dripper:

It brews the same way a French press does, but it drains the coffee through a standard paper filter.  I use this myself almost every morning.  Cleanup is as easy as tossing out the filter and giving the Dripper a rinse.  Quick, easy, tasty.

The Aeropress is also quite popular these days, so if you've been leaning that way it is indeed a find & dandy route.

As for grinding, if you're fine with the cost then a conical burr grinder is super nifty.  The big advantage is that it ensures all your coffee gets ground down to the same size bits, with no risk of overgrinding.  You can also usually adjust the coarseness to suit different brewing methods.

That said, a cheapo spinning blade grinder really does work just fine.  Source: my coffee fanatic brother-in-law who owns at least $5000 worth of coffee brewing equipment.  If you don't want to spend a ton on a fancy grinder, just get a cheap one.  You do get the best taste the closer to brewing you grind your beans, and a cheapo grinder will get you that.

And finally as for beans, just go ahead and start out with your local Starbucks since you already like them.  If you decide to get more fancy, find a local coffee place that roasts their own beans so you can get really freshly roasted beans.

I've used Keurig a bunch and still do if I'm in a hurry or particularly lazy, but the taste of french press or clever coffee dripper coffee I make is just head and tails better tasting than even my most favorite Keurig flavors.  You'll be very pleased with the switch.

The regeneration challenges may give you the carrot you're looking for.  I'm already nearing level 30 on Gen3 and I still have a ways to go on my railgun and satchel charge challenges.  Both are weapons I wouldn't typically choose, so it's been a fun challenge to figure out how to get good at them.

With the railgun, I thought I liked it better when I unlocked the insta-fire mode, and I did indeed really like that fire mode when I got it.  But it wasn't long before I missed the extra damage potential of the standard mode and now that's my favorite again.

With the satchel charges, since I mostly play Hardpoint it's been fun to learn where the best hiding places for the satchels are near the capture points.  Some capture points have decorative computer terminals with lights that can help mask the flashing light of the satchel, and for many other points the ceiling seems to be a place nobody thinks to look for explosives.

Next generation will require me to focus on the Longbow sniper rifle, which I've only dabbled with thus far.  I've had some good luck putting the ACOG equivalent on it, and I'm looking forward to spending more time with that setup when it comes time for those challenges.

It's not that I think everyone needs to love the game, because of course not every game is going to fit every player.  And I'm also not against people talking about their issues with the game in this thread, because that's what impressions threads are all about.

But usually the discussion from people who dislike a game falls off after a few weeks, since those people usually move onto other games.  Then the thread generally turns to a discussion amongst those who are still enjoying and playing the game.

Here, though, it seems like we keep coming back to talking about how people regret their purchase, or how the game isn't for them.  Elsewhere on the internet, people are talking about the new 360 version, weapon combos, map tricks, tips for the regeneration challenges, or impressions on the new matchmaking system.

24  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Anyone going to PAX East? on: April 10, 2014, 01:21:09 PM
FYI, if you don't want to drive to/from the convention, it's possible to get there with public transportation.  The commuter rail Lowell line can get you from Woburn to North Station, and then you can take the subway to the convention with a couple transfers.

But an even easier path may be to take the 354 Woburn Express Bus, which has a bunch of local Woburn stops before hightailing it to downtown Boston near Government Center.  From there it's a healthy but doable walk to the convention center, or you can switch to the subway.

As for going alone, all I can say is that I've had a blast at the PAX Easts I've been to, and my experiences have been mostly-solo with sporadic Teggy/Kelric encounters.  I'm sure you would have had even more fun if your friend could have made it, but the crowds at these things are so friendly and all-inclusive that you don't really feel alone when you go solo.  Pretty much any time I was sitting in a long line by myself I inevitably ended up joining some nearby people in a game of zombie dice or whatever other line-waiting game of choice was going on.

If only I still lived in the area I'd take you up on that 3-day pass and join you in an instant.  PAX East is just a ton of fun.

Seriously, though, even though I read through this tread in real time, I feel like I'm probably missing some obvious things.  Tips?  Was "tips" the wrong word again?

The UI is unintuitive but you pretty much need some direct trial & error to figure it out. You have to download a lot of apps (free) to get basic functionality, like playing blu-rays. You need to update the firmware on your controller. The Kinect needs to scan you nude for the initial setup. There used to be a lot more gotchas but the recent big UI update thankfully fixed a lot of them.

Wish I could do it. I have a Mac Mini running as media server on my TV and a Roku I sometimes use. I watch less than 10 hours of a TV to week and everything I watch is available online (and if it isn't I don't care enough of about it to care about missing it).

Except soccer. When NBC took over english soccer, they put all the games online, but you have to have a cable subscription to get them. If I could find a reliable way to watch soccer, even for a monthly cost of up to $20, I would cut cable in a second.

You should look into whether a British VPN would get you the coverage you need via BBC online streaming. I saw lots of reports of doing that to get access to BBC Olympic coverage for I think less than $10/month.

The lowest model of the TiVo Roamio can record OTA broadcasts.  There's also a multitude of homebrew DVR options if the TiVo monthly fee goes against your mission.

Over the air HD really does cover the majority of the shows I want to watch, and with better quality than cable to boot.

Plus, as it uses the home wifi for remote control, it doesn't require line of sight to the Roku (seriously...this needs to be implemented in EVERYTHING home entertainment center related from now on).
Some of the latest Harmony remotes can do this for you.  The Harmony remote talks to a Harmony hub, and then the hub then talks to the rest of the devices via a powerful IR blaster, bluetooth, or a secondary IR blaster you can use if your devices aren't all in one spot.  Since the remote to hub communication doesn't need line of sight, you don't need to point the remote at anything in particular to control anything.

I played a bunch of this on a flight today and I'm really impressed with the conversion to iPad.  Some parts of the UI feel improved, such as the way you do power management and how you get more info on your equipped systems.  Other parts are handled really well considering the reduced screen real estate.  Focusing on one ship or the other seems pretty easy and intuitive.

Weapon management seems a little funky at first, but I'm getting used to it.

Having never played this on the pc I am thoroughly enjoying this. I suck at it though. I can't even get far on easy.

Are you exploring the early sectors a bunch before going to a new one, or are you making a bee-line for the sector exit?  For the most part, you want to leave a sector just before the enemy fleet overtakes it, so that you've had as many encounters as possible.
