I was rather shocked by how bland Destiny turned out to be.  I knew it wasn't a full SP game but I expected something better than just re-running the same patrol missions in the hope of getting better loot, just to get better loot so I can re-run the same patrol missions to get better loot, etc.

It sure it pretty though.
This sums it up pretty well.  Pretty/bland

My lightbulb moment came after spending an hour in front of the loot cave.  I played for an hour, got a few blues and more greens, and went from level 20 to level 20 with ~10  more light points .  I looked back and thought what I could be playing instead that I would actually enjoy and everything was more enticing.

The loot cave was a red herring.  People are used to improving their characters through loot drops, and the loot cave looked like the most reliable way to get those drops, but the advancement from level 20-28 happens through increasing faction reputation so you can buy your next set of gear.  That faction reputation advances naturally from playing the game the way you want to in all the various PvE and PvP activities.

Not that it's at all your fault for thinking you needed loot drops for your gear at the point.  The nutty game design has your gear improve from loot drops in levels 1-20, then from faction purchases from 20-28, and then it goes right back to you needing raid loot drops for 28-30.

Call of Duty multiplayer is my biggest disappointment.  Unplayable due to the lag issues, but even when I magically got a few lag-free rounds I found the map design and spawning system to be the worst I've ever seen in a CoD.  I had my expectations set really low, and the game still managed to [invent word that is the antonym of exceed] them.

My sleeper hit was Destiny, though I get why it's on so many of your disappointment lists.  I didn't play the beta and didn't follow hardly any of the hype, so I really didn't know what to expect going in.  Here I am hundreds of hours later still having fun with it.

I had a fine time, and learned myself oodles.  Maybe we can hit it again Friday?  I promise not to pick up the relic.

I'm game for another go whenever we can get everyone to align again, but I think we may have trouble pulling people away from some of the latest new game releases.  As far as I know this Friday works for me.

In other news, there was a big patch this week.

Highlights:
  • now 10 bounty slots
  • Iron Banner in progress again with a lot of changes since last time
  • Voice chat tools introduced for matchmade teams
  • Difficulty scaling changed to make 3-player strikes easier
  • Public events occur 10-15% more often
  • Levante finally selling a few more shaders in the Tower
  • Can now preview shaders and emblems
  • Fixed that stupid issue with getting credit for the bounty to kill Walkers
  • Lots of changes to multiplayer map layouts - might no longer be game-ruining to capture A on Blind Watch

There's still 1 1/2 months left of the year, and whatever is freshest in our mind always shines the brightest. Give it a couple more months and ask again then. Any replies right now will be heavily skewed towards the latest releases, while completely skipping anything that hasn't come out yet.

There are no more big releases beyond Smash Bros and The Crew that I'm aware of.  A few more smaller games and re-releases I'm sure, but highly doubtful anything that would stick out as a GOTY.

So they don't deserve to be considered? And all those highly anticipated games that came out yesterday, are you claiming that we are all ready to toss our fair and balanced verdict about them into the pot? Games like Little Big Planet 3 aren't even out in Europe yet.

This thread is the very definition of impatience, and is way too early for it to have any significance whatsoever. If you guys can just control yourself until the beginning of January (at which point even the latest releases should have at least one or two weeks of distance), maybe our "GOTY" vote will mean something too. As it is, this is just ridiculous, and will detract from any other GOTY votes we may come up with for this year later.

But hey, suit yourselves. I'm not going to vote in this thread.

You getting a tattoo of the results of this thread or something?  What's the harm in having a discussion about our favorites as of now?  I'm pretty sure we can change our minds later or even start a January thread.

They added a couple more benefits to getting the game in beta instead of at release.

Here's the list, new additions in bold.

• Your very own Eagle fighter ship docked in a secondary location in-game
• Exclusive pack of ship paint jobs
• A ‘day one’ ship decal
• A digital players guide
• A digital concept art book
• Plus loads more digital goodies to be announced over the coming weeks.
• Plus an automatic permit to visit Sol or anywhere in the Solar system without having to first earn a reputation with The Federation.
• 25% off in-game ship insurance for life to all our Beta backers
• free access to one of the 5 new ships when it’s released!

The discount on ship insurance is actually pretty significant.  Insurance is the way you replace your ship if you blow up, and the game currently has you pay the cost immediately after you blow up, so you have to keep some cash reserve always on hand.  The 25% off would mean that you would just always be able to play with less cash reserve and have more money put into your cargo or upgrades or whatever.

8 days left to get into beta if interested.

Coop would've been fun, but without fun regular multiplayer I don't think it'd be enough to keep me from selling while the selling is good and while there're so many other games coming out.  Ended up selling it for a buck more than I paid, so the universe basically paid me a dollar to play through the single player campaign.

Sold mine this week after finishing the campaign.  Single player was a lot of fun.  Good villain, good set pieces, fun weapons/gizmos/vehicles, and with only a handful of frustrating moments.  I especially enjoyed the way you get to play the last few missions.

Multiplayer is a damn shame, because it's almost something I'd love to play.  Fix the lag issues and fix the spawning system and you're most of the way there.  The harder-to-fix issue is that I think most of the maps aren't really set up all that well to handle this level of mobility.  Too small or too many paths or something.  There's never any feeling of a front line, even in Domination mode; it's just a bunch of people bouncing around in an open arena.

I've been contemplating on buying a Nexus 9 but every time I get close to pulling the trigger I can't find one good reason I'll use it above my phone or my current 4 year old Win 7 laptop which is my primary couch machine.

So how do you use or tablet?

In addition to an iPad I have a Macbook Air which is almost as small and light as an iPad.  I almost always use the iPad over the Macbook for couch web browsing.  It's just plain more comfortable and easy to use a tablet instead of a laptop unless you're typing up something really long.

I also play Hearthstone regularly and can do so on either device.  The only reason I'd ever play it on the laptop over the iPad is if the iPad battery is dead.

I agree about Destiny aim assist, but I was having trouble making shots in that shooting gallery I know I could make in pretty much any other console FPS.  Maybe I was indeed just Pulling a Teggy™ and accidentally trying to shoot through cover.

I see people on my friends list playing multiplayer all the time -- are you guys really not experiencing controller-throwing rage amounts of lag?  Every time I try to play I get at best a couple minutes of play before some frustrating lag encounter.
I don't put much stock in the signal strength icons if that's what you're going by. I've encountered some lag, but nothing that makes me crazy.
I'm talking about things like emptying a full magazine into someone's back only to have them casually turn around and kill me instead, then seeing the kill cam and finding the server thinks I only landed one bullet.  I even tried going full-bore DMZ on my router just to make sure it wasn't some lingering NAT issue, but it didn't seem to make a difference.

So then I moved to single player and got to Kevin Spacey's shooting gallery.  Is the aiming or gunshot timing really weird in this game?  I was having trouble hitting the targets that were slowly moving left to right.  It would look like my reticle was right on top, but nope, miss miss miss.  (This was when using the Atlas single fire pistol).  It's really frustrating going from being able to get headshots on moving player targets jumping erratically in the air in Titanfall or Destiny to not being able to hit a predictably moving slow AI target even in the chest.

Huh, very weird.  There was at least this official word that the game "will support" dedicated servers.

Has anyone done much tweaking to the autoaim settings?  It seems like there are a few more options than you usually see, and with the default settings I kind of feel like the aiming speed gets way too crazy slow when aiming down sights.

Lag made it unplayable for most of my attempts to play multiplayer, but I did enjoy the beginning of the single player campaign more than I expected to.  Can we just put an end to peer-to-peer for console multiplayer?  Why aren't we using the unlimited and unfathomable power of Azure or whatever?

But assuming they improve the lag issues, I think the spawn system may kill this iteration for me.

I just spawned, so I should have time to shoot down a UAV.... nope, I'm dead.  Someone on me already.
My team just can't seem to secure a second point.  It's hopeless.  Oh wait no, 3 of us spawned on Bravo.  Guess we'll cap it.
Oh look, an enemy spawned 20 feet in front of me, right before my eyes.

I do like what I see so far with the weapons and gizmos, though.  Hopefully my gripes about spawn system are just me getting used to the new maps or something.

Got CoD due to arrive in the mail today and I'm going in with delightfully low expectations. The MS sale on it means I can likely recoup 100% of the cost if it turns out I dislike it as much as the last one, but if they managed to get it right this time I'll be happy to have a new multiplayer game as I start to hit my Destiny burnout point.

Also looking forward to reading Harvest Moon impressions, but I probably won't be picking that one up right away.

For what it's worth, the official word is that they're still just inviting at random in each batch.

You're not missing out on a ton in it's current state, though.  The gold income is the slowest its ever been, the talent gating for your first few matches with every hero makes it a lot less fun to try out new heroes, and they just plain haven't come up with anything yet for leveling up your gamewide account from 15 through to 40.  The game was far more enjoyable in the spring and early summer than it is now.
