No thread yet?  The game has been doing the fundraising early access model, and today it goes from $150 'premium beta' to a wee bit more reasonable $75 'standard beta'.  I think full release is expected to be priced at $50.

Early buzz seems pretty great.  Dogfighting seems a lot more nuanced than a lot of older space combat games.  There seems to be a bigger focus on subsystem targetting, for example.  I saw a video of a dogfight where one pilot was trying to disable his opponent's weapons directly, but the opponent was going for heat dissipation subsystems.  The lack of heat dissipation also made weapons impossible to fire, and it turned into a standoff.

The game is best played with a HOTAS setup, or at least a good ol' joystick, the way god meant space sims to be played.

I'm still not sure if I can stomach the $25 extra to get early access, but I'm at least really tempted.

Here's more to whet your appetite:

<useful links to the game, and to previews & impressions>

<intriguing videos of combat and spinning spacestation docking>

<cool looking screenshots>

<neat comparisons of ships from the original Elite and their modern counterparts>

<handy links to affordable joystick and HOTAS options>

I'm in a similar situation, but I'm feeling trapped because my wife is going through crazy health issues and I'm worried a new company's health issues won't cover things as well as my current one is. But really, that's a cop-out, because I'm not even looking at what options are out there.

But I echo what everyone else is saying. Find new job, then quit old one. You not only get that nifty benefit of maintaining an income, everyone always says the search itself goes better if you still have a job and aren't urgent desperate to get the new one.

Don't know if the angry buzz of the thousands of grumpy alpha players is making it out of the HotS circles, but Blizzard pretty much just ruined the game with a single patch.  It's still alpha, of course, so there's plenty of room for decision reversals and balance changes, but in the current state:

  • Talents are behind a level-up gate, so you now have to play a new hero for ~3 hours to be able to use all of the hero's talents.  Compared to other MOBAs, talents are a combination of skill upgrades and the equivalent of using an item shop to customize your hero.
  • Artifacts have been introduced, which give you 3 upgrade slots to use pre-match.
  • 1 - the artifacts are horribly imbalanced.  They do things like "increase max health 15%" which combine absurdly with heroes that already have high health, attack damage, or health regen.
  • 2 - the artifacts add a new gigantic pay wall, easy to call pay-to-win.  You can only buy artifacts with in-game gold, but you can buy new heroes with gold or real money.  Gold comes really slowly, so if you use gold to buy a new hero before you have a set of artifacts, you're gimping yourself.  If you only use cash monies to buy heroes, you'll be stronger faster
  • 3 - the artifacts are unavailable for new players; unlocked at level 15.  Oh, you're new to the game?  Well tough, you're also weaker than everyone else.  That enemy player that chose the same hero as you does 10% more damage, regenerates health faster, a faster base move speed than you, and access to better talents
.
On the plus side, this patch also introduced a new hero that can turn into a doggie.

Not for school-age kids though, right?

Oh no, I think it was for Germany it was somewhere around age 18-21.  I don't have any direct knowledge of how other countries with mandatory service handle it.

Oh really?  There aren't any card unlocks or anything for the heroic bosses?

When I moved from Boston to Albuquerque, I had an initial culture shock adjustment period to the different level of public friendliness between strangers.  The level of inquisitiveness and smalltalk you get from, say, a grocery bagger in ABQ, is just alien weirdo bizarre in Boston culture.  What does this person want?!  Why are they so curious how I'm going to cook these steaks?  Should I hand over my wallet?!

So I guess if I imagine that there was a single fast food place in Boston that featured ABQ levels of aggressive smalltalk, I might be a little weirded out by that friendliness.  That's about as far as I can relate to ya, Harpua.  All in all, "you're making people be nicer to each other!" is hardly a damning criticism.

I've been saving up gold for it, but doing the math it seems you get a lot more gold/$ equivalent by spending real dollars on this expansion compared to what your dollars get you in the card store.  I think I'll probably spend the $20.

A new Tiny Tower?? Why? I still don't get this "game". I am sure it will be the same game with different graphics as usual from them.

I enjoyed the first one until the progression got too slow, and then I enjoyed Tiny Death Star until the progression got too slow.  But another one already?  These free-to-play games are already so formulaic, 83% of the fun is seeing the formula applied to a new setting.  I don't see how Vegas is going to feel that much different than Tiny Tower 1.

Fun list, lots of stuff I hadn't heard about.

Some that caught my eye:

  • Death Road to Canada - sounds fun
  • Motorsport Manager - prettier version of a Kairosoft game?  Sold!
  • Fat Princess - had a lot of fun with the PS3 game so I'm curious to see this weird concoction
  • Bears vs. Art - anything Halfbrick gets my attention
  • Framed - I'm a sucker for anything clever and original
  • 80 Days - I'm not totally sold but looks interesting
  • Dog Sled Saga - doggies

Figures.

I played it some this weekend. I like it for the most part, it's fun, but not crazy about the mechanics. Since you can't see all the various resistance/damage stats as you play it basically just turns into lay down a mixture of turrets to augment with you heroes.

Touch an incoming enemy creep and it'll show his resistances at the bottom right of the screen.

I'm also having fun with Plundernauts.  I'm halfway through the second system and haven't yet felt like I've hit a paywall, so as long as I can keep having fun for free I'll keep having fun. The periods of downtime don't bother me yet, and I imagine the simplicity of the naval combat lite would probably get to me if I played more than 5 battles at a time.

My current ship is a carrier one with two fighter flights and 3 turrets on just one side. Seems to be doing well for me so far despite the lack of mobility.

Nothing like that.  Right Testicle™ is just the name of one of the Zentraedi™ ships:

For the Robotech only folks, Protoculture isn't remotely the same.  It's only in Macross, for one, and it's neither a plant or energy source, but is as its name implies, the first culture, basically think Precursors or Forerunners.

Remotely the same as what?  My hypothetical Volt-Go-Formers show?

Between Macross, Southern Cross, MOSPEADA and Robotech.   Protoculture is the through line between the series in the US adaptation, but is only actually present in Macross as a term and there it means something else entirely.  Southern Cross does have the Flowers of Light though which basically do behave as what is presented in Robotech as Protoculture.  Neither are present in MOSPEADA.

I may be missing what you're trying to say, but hypothetically you could just find some way to bring the Matrix of Leadership into GoBots and Voltron to have a similar tie-together.

Have no idea what the proper story is vs. the non-proper story.

You probably mostly remember the adventures of the SDF-1 with Rick Hunter, Minmei, Admiral Gloval, etc.  Those episodes have nothing to do with the adventures of Rand and the other guys with motorcycles that turn into robots.  You probably have little to no memory of the adventures of Dana Sterling, but those were also hamfisted into the 'Robotech' umbrella despite having nothing to do with the above two series.

I watched all 3 series. Invid invasion was my favorite. macross was 2. Robotech Masters (Dana Sterling) was a distant 3rd.

And how did they not match up? Seemed to work pretty well?

Imagine you heard that a studio in Russia bought the rights to GoBots, Transformers, and Voltron, changed names and some dialogue, and then played them together as seasons in a series with their stories and characters all somehow being connected.
