41  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Remastered Journey coming to PS4 July 21 on: July 21, 2015, 09:50:34 PM
I always thought this looked fascinating, but didn't realize it was forced MP (I avoided write ups on it). Thanks for saving me the time on it, Tilt, because I can't stand MP. If that's the point of the game ala Left 4 Dead, then that's fine. But a game like Journey should at least have an option (or Drop-in/Drop-out like the LEGO series) that you can turn on or off at your discretion.

Tried that and it didn't work. The fan is spinning up, but there's nothing going on in the rest of the console. It's like the HDD isn't getting juice at all. Anyone?
43  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / I think my 360 is dying on: July 19, 2015, 10:41:11 PM
So the other day, I fired it up and it was working fine. Watched some vids, my son played MineCraft, etc. The next day he hits the power button and the light comes on (ditto on the control) but there's no sound like it's booting up. It's like when the alternator dies in the car - the light comes on but there's no engine revving up noise. Same thing here. Any thoughts on things to check on it?

Yup, that worked. I'm apparently with stupid.

I'm at around 43% now and opened up the third island. I pegged who I figured the Arkham Knight was right from the start, but it wouldn't make sense in this universe because they never mentioned the original character. Uh, yeah that changed in a big way just now. I don't know who all has completed the main storyline yet, but this is was my original prediction and who I think it still is:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Jason Todd

Arkham Knight as much as possible, and when that's not possible I'll continue sinking an ungodly amount of time into Craft the World, aka "Dwarf Fortress w/ Pretty Graphics."

SWEETNESS! I'm also still instinctively hitting the L2 when I try to brake, which completely fucks you during a chase/race/driving around.

Their choice of mapping for this one puzzles me. Using L2 for brake/reverse would have been much better than what they're using it for now, which is to have you hold it down to stay in battle mode. My hand gets tired during extended battles due to having to constantly hold this down. They would have been better off making battle mode a toggle and putting it on the square button (PS4) instead of having the braking there. I mean, it's not like you're about to voluntarily and temporarily turn back into driving mode in the middle of a battle, so why force us to hold down the button?

Exactly. Especially considering the frequency of the tank fights. I initially ignored some of the Batmobile upgrades because I didn't think I'd be fighting drones all the time. Now, I'm pumping points into that section because tanks are everywhere. This pisses me off considerably because now I'm ignoring other moves/upgrades I need for the hand to hand sections. And I agree with you on the hand cramping. Stalking the uber tanks while holding down L2 with my middle finger and steering with my thumb is poor design.
49  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4/XB1/PC] Batman: Arkham Knight (Rocksteady Returns) on: July 02, 2015, 08:34:25 PM
Ok, the Batmobile can go to hell. The side missions where you take down the Arkham Knight's lieutenants is horrible. Chase down an APC, fine. Oh wait, you mean the targeting on the thing is flaky? Ok... uh, can you make it worse? SURE THING! How about we throw in three or four Humvees with rockets who cause you to go into slo-mo upon impact, thereby causing you to lose track of the APC entirely?

SWEETNESS! I'm also still instinctively hitting the L2 when I try to brake, which completely fucks you during a chase/race/driving around.

Spoiler for Hiden:
As for the Joker randomly appearing, I had a laugh out loud moment last night. I'm in the middle of a fight on the street, and I 'm rolling through a combo. Batman spins around and clotheslines a guy and I peg him as the Joker the second before impact. I rolled laughing. The little bits of him popping in and out (the Man-Bat one slayed me too) while saying he's your "wingman" are great. Hamill just crushes it this time.

One other thing - I agree with the griping here about the review scores being ridiculously high. I'm a massive Batman fan, adore the series (even Origins has its moments), but right now I'd rank this about an 8.5 out of 10. Not sure where it will go based on the finale, but that's my opinion thus far and I'm closing in on 30% complete.
51  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4/XB1/PC] Batman: Arkham Knight (Rocksteady Returns) on: July 01, 2015, 08:12:26 PM
Loving the game more and more, but the Batmobile... eh. I'm starting to get the hang of it, but the trick I've found is to ride the handbrake hard. The turn radius on that beast is air tight when you hit the brake just so, but the second you let off the Batmobile leaps forward. This is genuinely bad vehicular handling, but it moves up to passable so long as you work that brake at the same time. If they wanted to convey the sense that Batman drives with both feet, mission accomplished.

My biggest problem with Arkham City was how fast it drowned you in quests. An hour into the game, you just kept getting hit with side quest after side quest. Based on the radial wheel in Arkham Knight, I see I have a ton more to look forward to. But I like that it spreads them out over time rather than all at once.

Visually, the game is gorgeous (PS4), and enormous. I'm picking up Riddler trophies as I come to them, rather than going out of my way to hunt for them. The city is too damn big and looks like an actual city. The result is one of complete immersion, but it makes finding those damn things extra difficult. I love that you have to think like Batman all the time and remember what weapons he has, that he can remotely access the Batmobile, and so forth (the interrogation of the Arkham Knight driver being one of my favorite moments - "Remember something else?").

My favorite thing though is the one thing we can't talk about as it will spoil the surprise for the rest, provided that it's not splashed all over the news and ads at the moment (haven't been watching TV lately so I don't know). How they kept that a surprise, I really don't know.

I dunno, but I feel like Rage is one of the best things they've done recently. Sure, the game received a lot of criticism, but if you take the game for what it is,  it's great. I'm currently playing it and I feel it has a lot of personality going for it. I wish they'd go more in that direction than Doom & Quake over and over again.

I quit RAGE (RAGEquit?) after about two hours. Could not get into it in the slightest and, oh yeah, everything was brown again. Yay color palettes! Look, I'm not a default id hater, as I recognize they make terrific engines and pioneered the shooter genre. But it seems that even when they try to branch out (ie RAGE) they fail. At that point, it's time to hire some new people who actually understand how to craft stories and unique worlds. Let id's programmers build up the engine, and hire others to do the rest of the work. But that's me.

Ok, so I finally relented and picked up a few things:

Back to the Future: The Game - $4.99
Deponia - $.99
Waveform - $.99
Polarity - $.99
Transistor - $4.99
Craft The World - I forget
The Witcher: Enhanced Edition - $1.99
The Stanley Parable - $7.99

Craft the World is fabulous and it's the only thing I've played for days. It's Dwarf Fortress with beautiful graphics and I adore it. It's super addictive to, as it's caused me to be up until 1 a.m. every night the last week.

I might grab Borderlands the Pre-sequel, now that it is 67% off. But the released so much DLC for Borderlands 2 that I still fell somewhat burnt out on the series.

Yeah that's kind of my problem. Between 360 and PC, I sank around 300 hrs into BL2 and just can't get into it now. I still haven't even played through with the Psycho or Technomage characters. But then I see new BL content and I start twitching... I've held out this far though.

Otherwise, I snagged the first Witcher for $1.99 but haven't been impressed by anything else on the sale. Some of the gems get buried though, as the last sale proved. Marlow Briggs & The Mask of Death is hilarious fun and it was $.99 during the last sale, but I only found out about it via another site.

FWIW I think Bana's portrayal of Robert Bruce Banner was far more compelling than Norton's, and he seemed genuinely haunted and conflicted.

Tom as Mad Max? Ugh. Too much focus on "madness" (and uncompellingly so) and less on Max.

This was Death Race 2000. That's it.

Well, the first word in the title was "Mad" after all. smile Part of what I liked about this was how Max starts as a feral animal, and gradually regains his humanity over the course of the film. The opening narration is absolutely true when he says he's reduced to a single instinct. That's not a far cry from where he ended up after Thunderdome when he was lost to the sands and the wastelands. One could see him devolving further over time until we meet him again in Fury Road, by which point there's very little humanity left.

Oh, and I barely breathed during the final sequence when he was climbing over the guitarist and the action was happening in 57 different places at the same time. A lesser hack like Michael Bay would have fumbled this so catastrophically I can't even begin to imagine it.

You know, this trailer actually does it for me. I haven't watched Arrow or The Flash despite hearing good things about both. Should I start on either or both? Because this show looks like a lot of fun and yes, Arthur Darville as Rip Hunter sounds awesome. It's funny watching the DCTVU illustrate how Marvel and DC basically ripped each other off for decades. Comic fans have known this for years, but there are people who never heard of The Atom who think Iron Man is the most awesomest comic book hero evah!!

Thus endeth my trying to sound like the current crop of wannabe hipster geeks. Sorry kids, we were there before you and our parents were there before us. This stuff ain't new to the world, just to you.

You'd be surprised. It depends on which section of Ft. Worth he moves to. I'm in Plano north of Dallas and always looking for an excuse to hit Ft. Worth. It's a great town but be forewarned: the parking at TCU sucks. They've renovated the campus since I was there and it's unbelievably gorgeous, with a solid stadium. But did they build additional parking? Hell no.

I was completely blown away by this. Summer's over, we're done. Just plan to watch Fury Road a few more times and all is good. This film shouldn't exist for any number of reasons, but that it does exist and is in fact awesome start to finish is nothing short of miraculous.

I've read the BTS stories on the Doof Warrior (guitarist) and the dedication to the world building is incredible. You know his whammy bar? It's a bicycle kickstand. The guitar itself? Fully playable (though not great) and it really does shoot fire. My favorite thing about it is knowing that Miller insisted everything in the film work. There's that one shot of Max on the pole going from the left side of the screen to the right side while the big rig blows up behind him. Really examine that shot and notice how much is going on in the background. If you're at all on the fence about this, it simply must be seen on the biggest screen possible. They pack every shot with so much that's overwhelming.

I also like how they kept the trademark weirdness of the series (the swamp sequence), as well as the sense that these films are stories told about a man called Max who happened to cross paths with the main characters at a particular point in their lives. I adore these films, but they're not the easiest movies to watch. This one is definitely hard to take at times, but it is absolutely worth it.

Miller et al did an amazing job on bringing Max back to life that I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

Jeebus H. Chrysanthemum, what a movie.  I was about 10 minutes into it when I leaned over to my friend and asked if he also felt like he needed to rest up.  It starts fast, gets faster, then takes about a 20 minute breather to flesh out the world a bit, before going back to 90 for the remainder of the film.  It was physically exhausting...but in a fun way.

Unfortunately, no one in the office will allow me to put on red long johns and a gimp mask, strap on a guitar and then tie myself to one of the office columns.

And that's stopped you before?

AssCreed: Revelations - 360 - Started this a short time ago but it's not grabbing me yet. Liked the AC2 and ACB though. This tower defense can suck my nut though.

My advice on Revelations is to make a beeline through the story missions, and perhaps the Animus Island missions as they unlock.  The side content in that game is possibly the worst in the entire series: it's unfocussed, dull, and on more than one occasion, *terribly* broken.  I know because I earned 100% completion on the single-player content, and it absolutely was not worth the effort.

By contrast, Assassin's Creed III has some of the best side content until you get to Black Flag.  Hunting, upgrading the homestead, and the naval missions are all good fun...which is a good thing because the story is almost unbelievably bad.  You'll think I'm lying at first because things actually get off to a surprisingly strong start, but that game goes off the rails harder than Indigo Prophecy and then spends another ten hours finding new cliffs to tumble over.

-Autistic Angel

Basically all of this. I loved the ending of AC3 and the epilogue of sorts with Connor, but for the life of me I couldn't tell you how or why the ultimate bad guy was the ultimate bad guy. Ditto AC4, though the pirate aspect was nine kinds of awesome.

As for me, I'm on the fence right now on things. XBL has BioShock Infinite as a free download, but I never actually played it. Made it about 20 minutes into the PC version and then was distracted and never went back. Been reading through the Harry Potter series this year and just finished it this week, so I'm stuck between firing up a new game, or cracking open another book. I did finish Far Cry 4 earlier this week. Wonderful world, absolutely useless main story (despite an awesome antagonist).
68  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Thumb sucking on: March 15, 2015, 03:42:39 PM
Children who continue to suck their thumbs well north of 8 or 9 can cause serious damage to their mouths. My wife had to have extensive braces, moreso than any of the rest of us normal brace wearers had to endure, and that was mainly due to her sucking her thumb for so long. Think a less exaggerated version of the headgear in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and you're not far off. Our eldest is six now and we've managed to break him of it (thankfully our 2 yo doesn't do it at all), but we'll still catch him at night or in the morning with it in his mouth. She found this stuff called Mavala which we put on his thumbnail every so often. I know it's worked because he'll wake me up either in the morning or in the middle of the night with, "Daddy, I need some OJ to get rid of the taste in my mouth!"

He hasn't done it in a while so the stuff does work. Pretty sure you can snag some on Amazon.

I'm not going to lie - Spader's Ultron voice gave me chills, especially when it went devoid of emotion for the last line. I do love the look of things here, but I don't know. I'm anxious to see it but I'm really getting tired of all the Marvel movies boiling down to defusing a ticking bomb at the very last second. State of Decay (along with the DLCs Breakdown and Lifeline) is hands down my favorite zombie game because there is one thing you're concerned with - survival. Dead Island is my second favorite because it got so much right despite the trailer essentially being for a different game. The first two chapters of DI (hotel and town) were pound for pound the best, most authentic experience I've had in the genre despite some technical glitches and a loony menu and weapon select system.

I laughed out loud throughout this trailer and I have no problem with them cranking up the humor from essentially zero. I'm reserving judgment until I see gameplay, but my fingers are crossed.

There is an explicit warning when Lara crosses a point of no return that there are will be no Fast Travel more camps until the end of the game.  Prior to that, you're free to return to previous areas to collect all the goodies you couldn't reach earlier.

Once the game is done, it also allows you load back in to complete any unfinished business.  I picked up all the relics and journal entries, but tapped out before completing all of the "Find X Number of These Hidden Curiosities" challenges.

Funny enough, I'm right there with you. But I figured I'd go ahead since I managed to get most everything the first time through. But I managed to hit 100% on all the maps, but needed about 1500 salvage to max out the bow and the handgun. I didn't feel like hunting that many damn deer so I kicked it to the curb even though I was at 99% complete. Argh.

Fabulous game overall though, despite the repeated instances of withstanding sieges in a game where exploration is the focus and combat definitely is not.

I'm as big a Batman fan as you can get, and I have zero interest in this. Young Jim Gordon is fine but the fact that all the villains appear as kids (with the notable exception of Joker) kills it for me. Because then you wind up with another procedural cop show, only the mob boss is Carmine Falcone and a local wealthy arms dealer has the last name Cobblepot. Oh and somehow this is all connected and a sign of Bruce Wayne's destiny.
