OK, after watching the first hour (skimming) that Avalanche put out, I'm back in. Nevermind. Come on, Tuesday!

Saw a report that the first day patch is ~2GB, so yay for that. I'm a little annoyed that the embargo is on because I need to know right now whether it's something I can skip. Maybe it's the steam sale now, but I have a hard problem spending a full $60 now on games.

I'm surprised that there aren't more and more people simply waiting on the game of the year editions for Fallout/Elder Scrolls. This is especially true if you are a PC gamer. By that time the bugs have been worked out, the mod scene is in full force, and all of the official DLC is available.

This is one of those rare titles that only gets better with a reasonable amount of age.

I've learned with Bethesda games to wait for two years for the mod community to add in the fun. By the time I got around to playing Skyrim, the mods basically made what was a solid game into an exceptional one. I tried like hell to get into Fallout 3 many, many times and I just couldn't. So it's no skin off my teeth to not spend money on Fallout 4.

Just Cause 3 in a few weeks, on the other hand, is a different story.

Brother, I hear you. If you feel even the slightest bit towards needing to be in bed, trust that feeling. I'm good. thumbsup

I'm playing as a Barbarian on PS4. Not... loving the class just yet, though the giant glowy smashy hammer thingie is nice. I'm curious about the Demon Hunter though. Crusaders were meh for me in Diablo 2, but I do recall the Monk from the first Diablo's expansion pack to be pretty awesome for the time. So I'm not beholden to any one character as of yet, especially since I've owned the game for just a few days.

One observation though is that the challenges and number of difficulty unlocks suggest that replaying the game again and again and again is more the point of the game than anything else. Is the core story not very long?

Looks like I salvaged all the lower level items I had stashed, so unfortunately can't be of much help there.  Multi would be good though, let me know when you usually play.

Usually I'm on at night as my PS4 is hooked into the main TV and I have to wait until the family is asleep before firing it up. So maybe 9-ish CST onward tonight.

Diablo III now and in the event I get some extra time, I'm still plowing through Uncharted 1.

OK, picked this up today and I'm going to give it a whirl tonight. If anyone has any items they're not using, I'd appreciate getting the chance to kick demon butt with them. icon_cool

At some point I really need to go back and play through Arkham Knight New Game +, but not sure if this weekend is the one. Bouncing between replays of Borderlands 2 and Torchlight 2, so if anyone wants to MP on both via steam, let me know.
10  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] The Flash on: October 28, 2015, 09:06:55 PM
Nope. It ended with some genuinely impressive CGI as the Flash ran through the debris towards the black hole and then BOOM! Credits. I do wonder if that wasn't a known and final FU from Reverse Flash to the Flash... It wouldn't have made much sense though as he would have basically killed his own world, but I still wonder about it.
11  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] The Flash on: October 27, 2015, 02:10:05 PM
I have to say one of the best surprises was how they handled Grodd. What is, on paper at least, one of the most idiotic things comics have done (and that's saying a lot) is handled more skillfully than I believed possible. If you ignore the ridiculous nature of the character and wonder how they'd put a realistic spin on it, this is the show that succeeds. He's genuinely scary, and I didn't think that was possible.

Oh, and the S1 cliffhanger can go screw itself. It killed me that I couldn't dive right into S2 on the spot. smile

Which is why I'm not bitching about it all or throwing in the towel. I have my issues with the combat, but like enough of the rest to keep going. And I am very much looking forward to UC2.
13  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] The Flash on: October 20, 2015, 09:28:59 PM
Just started this today and I absolutely love it. It embraces all the fun of the golden age of comics and I like that it treats the characters as intelligent. Jesse Martin scores big with me and brings a huge amount of gravitas to the crazier bits, and it looks like they're gearing up for a whole mess of fun. I do know some of the paths they take later on, and I love the writers for diving into this with both feet. It'd be nice if Zach Snyder et al remembered that comics are supposed to be fun.
14  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Playing through the Uncharted series for the first time on: October 20, 2015, 04:25:48 PM
Yeah I'm also underwhelmed by Uncharted 1. The awful gun combat doesn't help either, nor does the pinpoint precision of the enemy even when set to normal. Eh. I like the characters and the settings thus far and every time I'm not in combat, I'm loving it. But then I have to wade through wave upon wave of guys and I stop caring. So it's a 50/50 game for me right now. I'm looking forward to Uncharted 2 though, so I'm planning on just slogging through the first.
15  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: I will no longer grind for certain achievements. on: October 12, 2015, 10:44:02 PM
The only mission where it was an issue was the Gastown Races (sing this song, Do Dah, Do Dah). There you need your Thunderpoon maxed and the vehicle armor maxed and as strong a set of handling as you can muster. I was able to take the enemy down in about 5 hits following a long string of failures. Also, drop the ramming grill and you should be fine.

No, but I think it was the first to use the tool as a central conceit of the show. And it succeeded, for the most part. Really, who saw the flash forward coming? I still think they massively screwed up with the flash sideways storyline in season 6, but complaining about that has become a cliche in and of itself. icon_biggrin
17  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I will no longer grind for certain achievements. on: October 12, 2015, 08:41:38 PM
Mad Max broke me. God as my witness, it broke me, and it did so last night as I wrapped up the story. I looked across the map after the story concluded (in a fairly ugly and off-putting way, btw) and saw an endless sea of collectibles. And it broke me.

I recently played through Saint's Row IV: Gat out of Hell and loved the main storyline (the musical bits especially) but 80% of the expansion pack was ginned up collectible hunting. About the same percentage can be applied to Mad Max, or anything recently from UbiSoft, and as such I can't take it anymore. If I happen to kill X monsters with Y gun and a trophy/achievement dings, cool. If not, screw off. Content is content, you lazy ass developers. Content is not collecting 150 red flowers or blowing up 25 cars using only a pistol. That's busy work, and I had enough of that in school. I've enjoyed gaming for a long time, but recent releases have started to wear on me and this is partly why.

I am not paying you a monthly subscription fee to feel like a hamster on a wheel. I am not paying you north of $60 to feel like a hamster on a wheel. Yes, this most likely means I'm done with everything UbiSoft and EA produce, probably ever as this whole pattern seems to be their MO.

Tonight I fire up the first of the Uncharted series courtesy of the Nathan Drake Collection and I'm hoping it's worth it. I don't mind if collectibles are in a game. I do mind if a game is an excuse to hunt for collectibles while slowly grinding your way across a group of loosely connected missions under the guise of a story.
18  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Playlist - 10/9/15 Edition on: October 10, 2015, 02:19:29 AM
Like YK, I'm trying to burn off Mad Max now. Still a few story missions left, but the Nathan Drake Collection arrived today and that's caught my eye. At some point, I need to just finish Arkham Knight. However, I want the real ending and those goddamn Riddler trophies stand in my way. And no, YouTube is not the answer. smile

Finally DL'd the Tumbler the other day and I had to laugh because it handles a lot better than the standard Batmobile. No guns limits you on a lot of the challenges, but if all you're doing is racing or driving around the streets of Gotham, it's a pretty sweet ride.

Uncharted is an eventual must-buy, as I've never played any of the Uncharted games. However, it will have to wait until I get some of my backlog under control.

If you haven't played these great games yet, picking up the Uncharted Collection is an integral part of getting your backlog under control.  You're also saving a ton of money compared to people who bought the three games for $60 a piece, so in a way, it would actually be irresponsible not to buy the set and play it immediately.

Which is why I bought it tonight via Amazon and should get it Friday, just in time for the weekend. Now to go decide how hard I want to pound on Mad Max to try and wrap that story up.

So what's everyone have on tap for this weekend? When I can squeeze it in, I'm making another run through Torchlight II. Still working on Mad Max as well and I'm enjoying it more now that I have more options to trick out the Magnum Opus.
22  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mad Max - open world game from Avalanche on: September 10, 2015, 03:56:32 PM
The more I've played it, the more I've come around to it as well. It's a solid game which perfectly captures the MM universe. When I went to the sulphur springs in the bottom left of the map though, my PS4 became a slideshow. Not sure if that's been everyone's experience, but I got in and got out as quick as possible and the framerate picked back up.

25  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mad Max - open world game from Avalanche on: September 04, 2015, 03:31:53 PM
Ok, so I managed to get around to this later than I intended last night. It's beautiful, but the world of Mad Max is sparse to say the least. You start off in the blasted wasteland so there's little more than sand dunes and rusted out ship husks. Based on what's around, it's safe to infer that you start off in what used to be a harbor. The thing that surprised me was how jinky the controls are for driving. I thought they were twitchy for Arkham Knight, but for Max they're positively bonkers. I'm hoping that the handling improves as the car does, which would make sense, but it's a pain to do things right from the start. Take targeting for example. I hold L1 (I think) then rotate the camera until something lights up on my target then hit the Circle. In slo-mo.

This is the part where I shake my head because the game is not called Mad Max Payne.

I love the look of things, I find it funny it's either a prequel or a sidequel to Fury Road (which they lay out in the bios), and it looks to be as difficult as possible when you factor in scavenging for limited water and limited fuel. It's terrific that there are endless customization options for your car, but it sucks having a poor driving system. It's great fun scavenging a barren wasteland for parts and fuel and water, but it sucks having to use a poor ripoff of the Batman combat system. Notice a trend? For everything this game gets right, it fails in one of the others. Now this is just my first impression after playing for about two hours last night. I intend to keep plowing away for a long while so my opinion might improve once I get the hang of things.

But thus far, it's not exactly redefining the wheel and, if anything, it's making me worried about Just Cause 3 later this year. Did they screw up the driving and vehicle handling in that too? Will that one also have a convoluted way to shoot enemies while in a vehicle? I have no idea, but I'm concerned. More to come.

I will be later today. It should be here via Amazon once the mail arrives. My weekend trip to see the in-laws imploded courtesy of my wife coming down with a slight case of pneumonia, so I'll be here. And there will be much Mad Max played on my PS4. Details to follow.

You have that window to download them. Full game, doesn't stop working after the window closes. I snagged a few of these on my 360 (BioShock Infinite being one) and it's a nice little perk.

That is a true statement, and it pains me to admit that, because I really dislike EA, other than FIFA.

If I do buy it, I'm probably going to just trade/sell or in some other way get my current backlog out of sight and out of mind. I need to accept the fact there's no way I'm going to finish most of the games I own right now.

I've started getting brutal with my Steam queue. If a game hasn't grabbed me after, say, 10 hours or so, it gets deleted. Or if I'm playing something and I spot a title I like more, I delete the old one. It's the only way I can get through mine, and thus far it's working well.

I'll cut Avalanche a world of slack after Just Cause 2. That was some of the most fun I've had in years. Just... want to be sure on this one, which is probably due to my overt love of Mad Max.

Yeah, I'm not thrilled that reviews are all over. IGN of course blew their load all over it (probably because WB bought some ad space and IGN's gonna IGN) but the metacritic range is from bad to pretty good. "If you like open world stuff, here's more of it with driving and car customizations" is really the gist. I'm heading out of town this weekend, so I'll probably pick it up next week. Unless someone here posts details on game stoppers, that is.

The Final Girls

I laughed quite a lot. One caveat is that it's PG-13 which means they pull their punches because they have to, or they found an inventive way of spoofing the R-rated horror genre. I'm hoping the latter, expecting the former. But it remains a fun trailer.
34  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Fear the Walking Dead on: August 21, 2015, 02:14:48 AM
Punisher, that theory of "killed w/o bite, stay dead" was done away with at the end of Season 2 w/ Shane. Also, his death/reanimation illustrated that there is no set time frame for when the dead turn. Earlier in the show, Andrea stayed with her sister all night (or so I remember) and she finally turned in the morning. So I think they've left themselves enough openings to change things up as much as they want depending on the direction they choose to go in.

I've been obsessively playing Craft the World (or as I call it, Dwarf Fortress 2.0) and I've finally hit burn-out. So I switched over to Unepic which is an amusing indie riff on Metroidvania style games. It's funny, and would be hilarious if the voice acting were better, so I'm getting my money's worth out of it. We have to vacate the house for a few days now to let contractors finish off the home remodel, so I don't think much gaming will be in my immediate future.

I've been almost completely absent for the last few years due to raising kids and working. Hell, I barely write anymore, even though I completed a full first draft of a children's book about two months back. We're currently doing a renovation on our house and once we're through that, it's back to school time. Once we're through that, hell I don't know.

But I now have a job that's almost entirely work from home, so in theory I should be able to post more and come back here more frequently. So I think I'll stop talking about it and actually do it. smile
