Holy crap... my jaw is on the floor. Oh and Vader? Is it just me or does he look like a should, i.e. a terminator with Force powers?

3  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Steam has completely screwed up now on: October 08, 2016, 04:12:07 PM
So I was playing Skyrim and it crashed/hard-locked my machine right after a transition. I think it may have been in the middle of an autosave. After my machine came up, I fired up steam and it went to a black screen where the store is, dragged slow as hell, and dragged slower still when I went into the library. Just listing the achievements for Skyrim took 10 minutes of them popping up. I closed out through Task Manager and it said it was trying to autosync to the cloud and I left it to finish to see what would happen. When I woke up the next morning, it was still going.

So I've uninstalled steam and my entire library as a result, rebooted, went to steam's site and DL'd the client and reinstalled. I was able to DL Skyrim but then it still hangs. I just fired it up and the store is still black, the little advertisement pop-up of what's new is black, and my system has slowed to a crawl so long as it's running. I waited about three or four minutes, and it crashed out completely. So I'm wondering if I need to uninstall it, strip whatever remains I can out of the registry (using Win7) and try again.

Has anyone ever experienced this and if so, were you able to remedy it? I found quasi-similar things on the steam help boards but couldn't find a fix that would work. Thoughts?

Earlier this week I decided to reinstall Skyrim and start from scratch. Yeah, my life is already draining away. But I will say the second time is already much more fun because I don't have an overwhelming obligation to my ever-expanding quest log. If I want to do something, cool. If I want to explore somewhere and see what's there, fine. It's a relief to just sit back and find myself enveloped by the game world and as a result I'm enjoying it so much more. As an added bonus, the more time I sink into Skyrim, the less chance there is of me spending money on other games. smile

Finally picked up Uncharted 2 again after a month or two off and managed to finish it tonight. While it has its moments and is definitely better than part 1, I'm going to express what may be an unpopular opinion and say I'm just not feeling it with this series. I'm going to play through Uncharted 3 and then may or may not pick up part 4.

Doom is on sale at gamestop for 19.99- PC (Steam), PS4 and XB1. I might jump in at that price.

You'll get $20 worth of entertainment out of it.
7  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Is Gamingtrend dying, or we are all just on a break? on: July 13, 2016, 04:14:17 AM
Completely agree with the job + family + whatever = less game time. I'm still able to get to it enough to where I'm not twitching from withdrawals, but increasingly I feel like I just have nothing to contribute. When I do, I post, but it's not as central to my life as it used to be. Shifting of priorities and all that.

I fired up Rebel Galaxy a while back and just didn't get into it. Worked some more on it today and now I'm hooked. So more of that.
9  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Not more zombie books! on: June 30, 2016, 10:04:04 PM
I'm adding these to my wishlist, but ever since My Fair Lady hooked me up on BookBub, I've flooded my kindle app with way too many free books to read first. As a wannabe-pro writer, I have a question for you. What's your process for outlining/story prep for a book? For years, I've just sat down and tried to burn through a whole story end to end and almost invariably my short attention span combined with life combined with lack of personal discipline has resulted in me completing very little. So I'd be interested to know what you do to get through one of your books. Thanks!

Ghost Team

I laughed more at this than at all of the footage from the new Ghostbusters.

I haven't purchased anything on the Steam sale. Thus far it's just a complete meh.
12  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [Movie] Rogue One - A Star Wars Story on: June 24, 2016, 02:26:49 PM
Forrest Whitaker's character pulled from The Clone Wars. Thus all fans of the series assume (right or wrong, we don't know) that Ashoka Tano will eventually make her way into the live action universe. Personally, I'm more interested to see Ventriss show up.

I'm with you, Is. Sick and tired of all this rain and oh hey look! It's pouring again right now! Yay Texas weather!

Played through a bunch of Dungeons 2 this weekend and I love it. The Stanley Parable narrator kills me, one whole level is a giant spoof of Game of Thrones, the characters are fun to watch, and it's entertaining watching the traps do their thing. All of that helps mitigate the sloggy performance, wonky mechanics, and poor layout of the menu options. Go a few days without playing it and you completely forget what commands do what. But on the whole I've enjoyed it more than I've disliked it.

I'm somewhat curious about GTAV now, but I think my 8yo system is right on the cusp of being unable to run it. So I think I'll wait until I get a new rig (hopefully later this year).
15  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/Ps3] The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Impressions, tweaks and more! on: June 09, 2016, 09:29:01 PM
If I can't play with the mods, then I don't see much of the point. The bland map was later replace by multiple versions that were all better than the original, quests were easier to track via mods, you had more options with companions, missions, choices, and so on. Plus, I don't have 300 hours to just drop any more (thanks, kids/wife/job!) so I'm taking a pass.
16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Volition - Agents of Mayhem on: June 09, 2016, 02:14:38 AM
The first two SRs weren't that great, IMO, but they went crazy with the third one and I loved it. There were moments in that where I could barely breathe from laughing so hard. And the fourth one is a gem. Now I love this series so hard.
17  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: War for the Overworld - basically a new Dungeon Keeper on: June 02, 2016, 06:37:42 PM
OK, apparently I'm an idiot and did indeed already purchase this. Yes, this is basically Dungeon Keeper 3. Hearing the original voice is awesome, as is seeing the original design for the minions and rooms. Very nice art, overall. About as challenging as DK2 was, i.e. not at all once you get the mechanics down. But it's fun and a nice throwback to one of my favorite games, so I'm enjoying it.
18  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: War for the Overworld - basically a new Dungeon Keeper on: June 02, 2016, 02:52:48 AM
This one is on my wishlist, but I realized I'd bought Dungeons 2 at some point and fired that up instead. Man, I've been rolling laughing at it. They have a Lord of the Rings crack in the early going that had me howling. The interface is a bit dodgy, and I wouldn't say it's the best version of Dungeon Keeper ever, but I'm enjoying it. Good to hear that War for the Overworld is patched up enough by this point to give it a go. At this point, I can wait a few weeks for the steam sale and see if it comes in extra cheap.
19  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [Movie]Captain America 3 on: May 25, 2016, 01:48:58 AM
That fight scene gave me the impression the writers/Marvel were locked in a room for months working on just that. Different pairings, how characters would react, and I'm almost certain they were trying to one up each other throughout the process. There's so much unbridled win in that scene to not have come from the heart. I still hate that the commercials gave away Spidey catching Winter Soldier's punch (which is basically a punch line following a ton of setup) but that moment was still perfection. Saw a react vid where the guys were laughing because "Spidey just kicked Falcon out of the commercial!" which about summed up my feelings as well.

On the fence about Overwatch. On the one hand, I don't play MP games because they bore me. On the other hand, those animated shorts have been so amazing that I want to buy the game just to show my support even if I never actually play it. What to do.

Watched this again last night and it's still spectacular. Rock solid entertainment from beginning to end and I cannot praise Black Panther or Spider-Man enough. I have so many favorite parts it's hard to pick and choose, but I what I adore most is that this film as a whole refutes the gleeful carnage of the previous Avengers movies. "We dropped a building on him while we were kickin' ass." As messy as "Age of Ultron" was, this movie makes up for a lot of it by being almost entirely about the fallout from such wanton destruction.

And then you have Spider-Man namechecking "Empire Strikes Back" to Tony Stark and my brain melts from nerd glee.
24  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: New Ghostbusters Movie in the Works on: May 20, 2016, 01:46:44 PM
This deal is getting worse all the time. Honestly, is it too much to ask Sony to stop showing any more of their film? Every time they show us more, it just looks worse. The original was lightning in a bottle, and if you want evidence of how hard it is to get a sequel right, look no further than Ghostbusters 2. Same everything, and nowhere near as good as the original (despite having its charms). This thing looks like an unfunny mess of a flick, and the only thing the trailers have convinced me of is to not give them my money.
25  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: DOOM on: May 18, 2016, 04:26:59 AM
Finally got out of the Kadinger Sanctum (or however you spell it) and that was one long "how did I survive that?" running battle. I can't imagine how nuts the insane levels are.
26  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: DOOM on: May 18, 2016, 12:53:07 AM
Also, when you pick up a DOOM doll, you get a little cue from the original game. Found the secret original level in the first and third maps but hell if I can find them anywhere else. You can go back and choose whatever mission you want and then, yes, you do have to rekill everything, but you can take your time and explore without the need to get to the next map/mission. Going to try to get some more time in tonight as I haven't played since Friday.
27  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: DOOM on: May 15, 2016, 10:04:24 PM
I'm on Hurt Me Plenty and in Hell I've had a round with 4 Cacodemons, a half dozen Hell Knights, lord knows how many imps, and then for kicks they threw in a pair of revenants. Olde schoole fun.
28  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: DOOM on: May 15, 2016, 02:05:28 PM
Made it to hell and sweet Jesus it gets insane. I'm seriously out of practice at these games. Hell Knights bum rushing you really sucks, but a super shotgun blast to the face works wonders. Whatever monsters resurrect the others can just die, though. All of them.
29  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: DOOM on: May 13, 2016, 09:38:48 PM
Supposedly, but I have no clue where it was in either of the first two levels. You're correct - this one has the feeling of classic Doom just right. And good lord are the maps big.
30  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: DOOM on: May 13, 2016, 07:00:05 PM
Oh, and found a really fun secret in the third map:

Spoiler for Hiden:
You flip a lever and it opens a door through which you can play on one of the original Doom maps. You, your weapons, and enemies are all new but the walls and powerups are all from the early 90s. Doing this unlocks the ability to play the whole map in the extras menu, or something like it. That's pretty neat.
31  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: DOOM on: May 13, 2016, 06:35:50 PM
Holy crap is this thing fun. I also managed to get a suit of armor by standing on a handrail to get some elevation. So they remembered to rig the game a little bit. Also, I have no idea how to get some of those secrets. I'm really curious to dive into SnapMap but I won't touch that bit until tonight when the kids are down.
32  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: DOOM on: May 13, 2016, 04:25:21 PM
I'm with Bullwinkle. I also think that's who you're playing. I'm almost through the second map and the takeaways thus far are, as noted, the jaw dropping beauty of it all, and the sheer size of the maps. There was a funny comparison once of the original doom map to, say, a current Call of Duty one and the CoD one had you walking through a hallway interspersed with cutscenes while the doom map was gigantic. That seems to be the case here. The maps are huge. But I just picked up a chainsaw, so excuse me while I go work out my anger issues.
33  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (5/10/16) on: May 12, 2016, 06:20:58 PM
Planning on picking up DOOM unless the reviews all say it sucks. Then again, I somehow suspect that the reviews will be stellar [strike]since most were bought off as usual[/strike]. But it's been a while since I've dropped full price on a game, and My Fair Lady already gave me the go ahead. So why not? PS4 version here I come!

Ok, I'm about 40 hrs into this and have completed the first year. Very, very fun if you enjoy a quiet farming game. I haven't focused on relationships with the town because I honestly don't care. Sure you can get married, but I have enough of that in real life.

Some of the tricks include knowing what to farm and when. In the fall, pumpkins. Pumpkins everywhere. Get enough with solid fertilizer and they can bankroll the next few months. If you see a bush with colored dots all over it, right click on it for berries.

You can load up on berries and sell them, or used them for jams and sell those for more. Also, in the summer grow a ton of hops. Then build a few casks and you can brew pale ale (or wine if you use grapes/fruit). Those sell for a couple hundred each. Takes a lot of time (I basically brewed beer all winter) but when you drop them all in one go, you'll pull a solid chunk of change.

Mining - upgrade your pickaxe first and hit the mine on rainy days (after petting your animals if applicable). The mine in town goes down about 120 levels and on lucky days, you'll score on gems.

I also got the minecarts working first (mainly by accident) and those help so much in warping around town. Much better than wasting resources on single-use totems.

Overall, this is a really fun game once you get into it. It's slow paced, quiet and what I was looking for at the time. DOOM will be here soon enough, and I'll crank up the adrenaline then.

Stardew Valley has its hooks in me and I cannot stop playing. I'm shocked how much fun it is to clear out my farm, or go caving, or do any of the other farming things you can do. Half of my farm is overgrown with trees and shrubs though, mainly because I can only take care of so much at a time. I'm going through the whole first year as my testing ground, then once spring starts over I'll be ready to.
