I just finished a few titles this week and I'm feeling bleh about gaming right now. I just have no interest in anything at the moment. I'm hopeful this feeling will pass soon.

I finished up Just Cause 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider this week and realized I had Wolfenstein The New Order sitting on my "To Play" shelf since last year. Fired it up and whatever I was expecting, this ain't that. It's a genuinely solid actioner but one with character growth, strong dialogue and dramatic situations, and a great plot. It makes me wish I'd cranked it up earlier.

But hey, I may be late to the party but at least I made it.

The one thing that got me was Luke's line at the end. That's a seriously different direction for him than what I was expecting. Frankly, it makes him more interesting because I don't think it's just that he has doubts.

I was looking for this thread and couldn't find it, so forthwith is a record of what has been read for 2017:

A Game of Thrones - George R.R. Martin
A Clash of Kings - George R.R. Martin
Monster Hunter International - Larry Correia
A Storm of Swords - George R.R. Martin
People's Republic - Kurt Schlichter
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Roald Dahl

Holy crap. It's April and I completely forgot about putting up my list. Very well, here goes:

Skyrim (PC)
Skyrim SE (PS4)
Just Cause 3 (PS4)
Rise of the Tomb Raider (PS4)
6  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Middle Earth: Shadow of War on: March 02, 2017, 02:47:54 AM
The first one was fantastic, but the ending was a little lackluster. I may not be remembering it correctly, but I don't recall the final boss being anything special. I did like the setup for a sequel, and I see the second one is following through on that promise. Fingers crossed.
7  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] Spider-Man: Homecoming on: January 06, 2017, 02:45:07 PM
I'm a huge fan of this trailer. They nailed Parker and Spider-Man in CW, and this kid could well be a huge star after this one. Bonus points to Michael Keaton getting his villain on,

Finally seeing this for the first time tonight. I don't have anything else to add because I've stayed away from everything as much as possible. But I will say that releasing a Star Wars movie during the holiday season when work was insane for both myself and My Fair Lady is going to annoy me in the future if this is how long it's going to take for me to get to it.

Dammit AA, now I have another show I have to watch if only to snicker and snark at. Thanks.

I actually watch Netflix more than anything else lately.

Man, no kidding. I snagged the HBO app on just to watch Game of Thrones, but now the wife uses it for movies and I'm back to burning through the NF catalog. Seriously, why watch network TV anymore?
11  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend/Holiday Playlist - Christmas 2016 edition on: December 27, 2016, 11:43:25 PM
For some bizarre reason, a friend of mine got me back into Borderlands 2 (PC) and now I'm power leveling my gunzerker up to 72 (almost there). Haven't played much of anything else recently though. I did get the NES Classic though and fired it up last night. Man, I still suck at Super Contra. Haven't tried them all yet but that brings back some good memories.
12  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XB1/PC] Dead Rising 4 on: December 20, 2016, 02:56:32 AM
Dead Rising 2 was one of my favorite games ever, top 5 easily. Which is funny because I had so many problems with DR1 that I couldn't take it anymore. I haven't upgraded my 360 yet and honestly don't know if I'm going to at this point, which makes DR4 a PC only for me. Slight catch is that I can't run it on my current 10-yr old rig. Got a lot of mileage out of the old girl, but it's time to build a new God machine and that's going to have to wait until sometime next year.
13  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend playlist - 11/18 pre-Thanksgiving edition on: November 18, 2016, 07:25:03 PM
Just picked up Rise of the Tomb Raider myself and it's fantastic. Only about 1/4 of the way through it but I love it. I get the house to myself tonight and most of tomorrow so between this and finishing off season 6 of Game of Thrones, I'm all set.

16  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Steam has completely screwed up now on: October 08, 2016, 04:12:07 PM
So I was playing Skyrim and it crashed/hard-locked my machine right after a transition. I think it may have been in the middle of an autosave. After my machine came up, I fired up steam and it went to a black screen where the store is, dragged slow as hell, and dragged slower still when I went into the library. Just listing the achievements for Skyrim took 10 minutes of them popping up. I closed out through Task Manager and it said it was trying to autosync to the cloud and I left it to finish to see what would happen. When I woke up the next morning, it was still going.

So I've uninstalled steam and my entire library as a result, rebooted, went to steam's site and DL'd the client and reinstalled. I was able to DL Skyrim but then it still hangs. I just fired it up and the store is still black, the little advertisement pop-up of what's new is black, and my system has slowed to a crawl so long as it's running. I waited about three or four minutes, and it crashed out completely. So I'm wondering if I need to uninstall it, strip whatever remains I can out of the registry (using Win7) and try again.

Has anyone ever experienced this and if so, were you able to remedy it? I found quasi-similar things on the steam help boards but couldn't find a fix that would work. Thoughts?
17  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Playlist - 9/23/16 Edition on: September 23, 2016, 05:14:40 PM
Earlier this week I decided to reinstall Skyrim and start from scratch. Yeah, my life is already draining away. But I will say the second time is already much more fun because I don't have an overwhelming obligation to my ever-expanding quest log. If I want to do something, cool. If I want to explore somewhere and see what's there, fine. It's a relief to just sit back and find myself enveloped by the game world and as a result I'm enjoying it so much more. As an added bonus, the more time I sink into Skyrim, the less chance there is of me spending money on other games. smile

Finally picked up Uncharted 2 again after a month or two off and managed to finish it tonight. While it has its moments and is definitely better than part 1, I'm going to express what may be an unpopular opinion and say I'm just not feeling it with this series. I'm going to play through Uncharted 3 and then may or may not pick up part 4.

Doom is on sale at gamestop for 19.99- PC (Steam), PS4 and XB1. I might jump in at that price.

You'll get $20 worth of entertainment out of it.

Completely agree with the job + family + whatever = less game time. I'm still able to get to it enough to where I'm not twitching from withdrawals, but increasingly I feel like I just have nothing to contribute. When I do, I post, but it's not as central to my life as it used to be. Shifting of priorities and all that.

I fired up Rebel Galaxy a while back and just didn't get into it. Worked some more on it today and now I'm hooked. So more of that.
22  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Not more zombie books! on: June 30, 2016, 10:04:04 PM
I'm adding these to my wishlist, but ever since My Fair Lady hooked me up on BookBub, I've flooded my kindle app with way too many free books to read first. As a wannabe-pro writer, I have a question for you. What's your process for outlining/story prep for a book? For years, I've just sat down and tried to burn through a whole story end to end and almost invariably my short attention span combined with life combined with lack of personal discipline has resulted in me completing very little. So I'd be interested to know what you do to get through one of your books. Thanks!

Forrest Whitaker's character pulled from The Clone Wars. Thus all fans of the series assume (right or wrong, we don't know) that Ashoka Tano will eventually make her way into the live action universe. Personally, I'm more interested to see Ventriss show up.

I'm with you, Is. Sick and tired of all this rain and oh hey look! It's pouring again right now! Yay Texas weather!

Played through a bunch of Dungeons 2 this weekend and I love it. The Stanley Parable narrator kills me, one whole level is a giant spoof of Game of Thrones, the characters are fun to watch, and it's entertaining watching the traps do their thing. All of that helps mitigate the sloggy performance, wonky mechanics, and poor layout of the menu options. Go a few days without playing it and you completely forget what commands do what. But on the whole I've enjoyed it more than I've disliked it.

I'm somewhat curious about GTAV now, but I think my 8yo system is right on the cusp of being unable to run it. So I think I'll wait until I get a new rig (hopefully later this year).
28  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/Ps3] The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Impressions, tweaks and more! on: June 09, 2016, 09:29:01 PM
If I can't play with the mods, then I don't see much of the point. The bland map was later replace by multiple versions that were all better than the original, quests were easier to track via mods, you had more options with companions, missions, choices, and so on. Plus, I don't have 300 hours to just drop any more (thanks, kids/wife/job!) so I'm taking a pass.
29  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Volition - Agents of Mayhem on: June 09, 2016, 02:14:38 AM
The first two SRs weren't that great, IMO, but they went crazy with the third one and I loved it. There were moments in that where I could barely breathe from laughing so hard. And the fourth one is a gem. Now I love this series so hard.
30  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: War for the Overworld - basically a new Dungeon Keeper on: June 02, 2016, 06:37:42 PM
OK, apparently I'm an idiot and did indeed already purchase this. Yes, this is basically Dungeon Keeper 3. Hearing the original voice is awesome, as is seeing the original design for the minions and rooms. Very nice art, overall. About as challenging as DK2 was, i.e. not at all once you get the mechanics down. But it's fun and a nice throwback to one of my favorite games, so I'm enjoying it.
31  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: War for the Overworld - basically a new Dungeon Keeper on: June 02, 2016, 02:52:48 AM
This one is on my wishlist, but I realized I'd bought Dungeons 2 at some point and fired that up instead. Man, I've been rolling laughing at it. They have a Lord of the Rings crack in the early going that had me howling. The interface is a bit dodgy, and I wouldn't say it's the best version of Dungeon Keeper ever, but I'm enjoying it. Good to hear that War for the Overworld is patched up enough by this point to give it a go. At this point, I can wait a few weeks for the steam sale and see if it comes in extra cheap.

That fight scene gave me the impression the writers/Marvel were locked in a room for months working on just that. Different pairings, how characters would react, and I'm almost certain they were trying to one up each other throughout the process. There's so much unbridled win in that scene to not have come from the heart. I still hate that the commercials gave away Spidey catching Winter Soldier's punch (which is basically a punch line following a ton of setup) but that moment was still perfection. Saw a react vid where the guys were laughing because "Spidey just kicked Falcon out of the commercial!" which about summed up my feelings as well.

On the fence about Overwatch. On the one hand, I don't play MP games because they bore me. On the other hand, those animated shorts have been so amazing that I want to buy the game just to show my support even if I never actually play it. What to do.

Watched this again last night and it's still spectacular. Rock solid entertainment from beginning to end and I cannot praise Black Panther or Spider-Man enough. I have so many favorite parts it's hard to pick and choose, but I what I adore most is that this film as a whole refutes the gleeful carnage of the previous Avengers movies. "We dropped a building on him while we were kickin' ass." As messy as "Age of Ultron" was, this movie makes up for a lot of it by being almost entirely about the fallout from such wanton destruction.

And then you have Spider-Man namechecking "Empire Strikes Back" to Tony Stark and my brain melts from nerd glee.
37  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: New Ghostbusters Movie in the Works on: May 20, 2016, 01:46:44 PM
This deal is getting worse all the time. Honestly, is it too much to ask Sony to stop showing any more of their film? Every time they show us more, it just looks worse. The original was lightning in a bottle, and if you want evidence of how hard it is to get a sequel right, look no further than Ghostbusters 2. Same everything, and nowhere near as good as the original (despite having its charms). This thing looks like an unfunny mess of a flick, and the only thing the trailers have convinced me of is to not give them my money.

39  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: DOOM on: May 18, 2016, 12:53:07 AM
Also, when you pick up a DOOM doll, you get a little cue from the original game. Found the secret original level in the first and third maps but hell if I can find them anywhere else. You can go back and choose whatever mission you want and then, yes, you do have to rekill everything, but you can take your time and explore without the need to get to the next map/mission. Going to try to get some more time in tonight as I haven't played since Friday.

I'm on Hurt Me Plenty and in Hell I've had a round with 4 Cacodemons, a half dozen Hell Knights, lord knows how many imps, and then for kicks they threw in a pair of revenants. Olde schoole fun.
