641  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / ATI or Nvidia? on: February 23, 2005, 09:34:59 PM
ok after all was said and done, I just picked up the GF6600 GT AGP.

I anticpate a smooth install smile

Question though....does it need to be hooked up to my power  supply?  It seems like the 6800's do but the book is not clear about the 6600 AGP- I have a 420 watt supply so it is no big deal, but I am just not sure if I will need to do that.

Thanks as always.

I know this is a simplistic view but....if the cost of an item goes up the longer you keep it, isn't that a defacto late fee?

Ok, no?  Well then how is it a good thing that you are charged full price for the movie if it is late?

Man BB is sneaky and evil.

Direct Tivo

I have 2 actually and i got the second one for a free install for 49 bucks.

Best thing I did was switch to Direct TV from Dish-- my bill went down 9 dollars a month, I got 2 Tivos and my ass hurts- from continually kicking myself for not doing this earlier.

If you don't have tivo- get it- even if you watch 2 shows a week-  it makes it so so much better and easier.

One more thing to consider is if you go from nvidia to nvidia I would assume your chances of running into issues would be less. Just thought I`s toss that out there  .

Actually that is a really good point- i have gone with nvida for a few years now and it has been pretty painless.....

And if the 6600's are now out in AGP- well I am off to look at those AND that should help the prices on the older nvidia cards as well.

You'd like to think so, yet the previous generation of cards hasn't come down in price as much as you might expect.  A 9800 Pro still goes for ~$200, while a GF 5900XT is ~$180 at Newegg.  Sure, that's cheaper than they used to be.  But considering a 6600GT is roughly the same price and appreciably faster, it's a bit surprising they haven't dropped more.

Very true- and that price for the 9800 is *if* you can find it that low...maybe I should have said, HOPEFULLY the price will come down.
646  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / ATI or Nvidia? on: February 08, 2005, 08:40:07 PM
Good stuff-- thanks for the information.

Yeah I a pondering the 9600XT but my only trepedation is that it is an "old" card... I realize that my monetary constraints do limit me a bit but frankly I *should* be happy with a 150.00 card.

I have actually had the XT in hand but then put it back--

I am going to review the benchmark links posted- and yeah if I have to wait, well that's fine- so long as it is not too long smile

And if the 6600's are now out in AGP- well I am off to look at those AND that should help the prices on the older nvidia cards as well.

Good info-- thanks!

edit- one thing that HL 2 comparison does is make me want  to get DX9 running and play HL2 again!! smile
647  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / ATI or Nvidia? on: February 07, 2005, 10:32:25 PM
Lemme toss this one out here and see what everyone here thinks.

I have say, oh, 150.00 to spend, although less is ok.

I have to buy at either Best Buy or Fry's- it is a gift cert issue.

I am currenly running a GF3ti200 on an AMD 2200 processor and I wish to upgrade my card.

Actually every game out there plays well- Doom 3 and HL2 both looked good on my system but  I really just want to upgrade so with that said:

Nvidia or ATI?
Which one?
Why?

Now I have done some looking into ATI and the 9600 and 9800 series but I know very little about Nvidia's cards- well the new ones anyway, but they seem much more affordble.

Any input is very much appreciated.  Thanks!

well, she did kill a baby in that scene.....

I agree on the Boomer bit-- I like  to think that ONE of them is a human... but then we were told that some of the Cylons don't know they are Cylons.

As for the sexy Six and pandering.. yeah in a way  but it really fits into my thoughts on the Cylons trying to find purpose to their existence by being OVERLY human in their emotions, their religion etc...

Adama a Cylon??? Dude, don't DO that to me!!!!! But oh the possiblities----
650  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Battlestar Galactica on: February 01, 2005, 01:15:13 AM
Couple of things.

I watched Fridays BSG then Enterprise - one after the other.  My thought was at the end of 2 hours--

BSG- man those guys are all screwed.. this is a GOOD show-- no fluff or happy future lets all eat replicated Baked Alaska and have an alien love fest....

Enterprise- man this show *wishes* it was BSG... and so do I.

I think  Enterprise is MUCH better this year but really it should have been what BSG is.

Also there was talk  about the relegious aspect of the Cylons--if you figure they have decide that their makers were flawed-- hence the attack to wipe out humans and then they have to somehow justify their exisitence, their views on God or gods to help them give meaning to their existence do not seem so far fetched.

I always think of the end of  Bladerunner and Harrison Fords monologue  about why the android didn't kill him.

I for one though and  not totally thrilled by all the religion of the Cylons but i can understand it.

Oh, and yeah Boomer is teh hot!

Boxey:  Dead, where's yours?

OMG, I thought I was the only person to see this HORROR.. and I mean HORROR- the travesty of a movie.

I was like- ok Coolio.. fine that should be good for some laughs...and Erika Elniak.. that should be good for some boobies....and frankly it started out not too bad... and then....well, yeah it had moments and I never wanted to go so far as to skip parts as I kinda did what to know how it ended.

Well so when all seemed lost, I hear the words "Pleasure Bot" and I perked up... maybe salvation?....alas no...

Oh and let me recommend Netflix....I feel much better spending 1 dollar on the movie.

I would have to go wtih HL 2 as well... Far Cry would be a close second but HL 2 has so much more production value, polish, and just so many "ohmygoddidyouseethat???!!!' moments that it has to win.

Now, if you take Far Cry, and build it with the HL 2 engine and put the same amount of money into it.. well, wow...
658  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Earthsea on: December 16, 2004, 05:37:40 PM
Ok for those that think that SciFi did a good job at adapting the books- Ursula K. Le Guin does NOT agree with you at all.  Man is she pissed.

A Whitewashed Earthsea
How the Sci Fi Channel wrecked my books.
By Ursula K. Le Guin
Posted Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at 6:14 AM PT

On Tuesday night, the Sci Fi Channel aired its final installment of Legend of Earthsea, the miniseries based—loosely, as it turns out—on my Earthsea books. The books, A Wizard of Earthsea and The Tombs of Atuan, which were published more than 30 years ago, are about two young people finding out what their power, their freedom, and their responsibilities are. I don't know what the film is about. It's full of scenes from the story, arranged differently, in an entirely different plot, so that they make no sense. My protagonist is Ged, a boy with red-brown skin. In the film, he's a petulant white kid. Readers who've been wondering why I "let them change the story" may find some answers here.

And THAT is only part of her problem with the show.

(careful though, she is experiencing some heavy bandwidth usage...)

But my favorite quote from her main page is this:

Quote
I wonder if the people who made the film of The Lord of the Rings had ended it with Frodo putting on the Ring and ruling happily ever after, and then claimed that that was what Tolkien "intended..." would people think they'd been "very, very honest to the books"?

She certainly speaks her mind.
659  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Earthsea on: December 15, 2004, 04:21:37 PM
Ok after sitting through part 1 last nite, I have to say it was ...ok...

It's very pretty, nice special effects, sets are well done- definitely a very high production value but frankly the characters and acting are terribly lacking.

Ghed's father- omg did he just not know his lines so he had to read off a teleprompter?

Ghed's village squeeze- "Go find the girl you dream of.."  TRITE!

Then the whole I want to learn everything about being a wizard NOW and I don't have patience and I know it will mess everyting up but tell me NOW Yoda...patience young Jedi... but done not nearly as well... it was just so contrived.

Then they send him away without training- yet with great power and potential to be the most powerful wizard ever???  How smart is that?  Oh, but stay and get well first?? HUH?  What if that shadow thingy shows up looking for him?

Too much silliness there but I don't love Raymond and I could care less if a housewife is boinking the gardener....so I watch Earthsea.

Oh its ok but for all the hype I think it falls short.
660  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Earthsea on: December 15, 2004, 12:49:29 AM
Hmm, Ursula doesn't seem too pleased at all...but I guess that just means that the mini-series is not what she intended but doesn't necessarily mean it is a bad show.

What I didn't know until recently was that the books were bascially written for "young readers"  much like Harry Potter.

Not that it would detract from the book and/or the series but it does make a difference.  And certainly the SciFi channel was not billing this as a mini-series based on the young reader series, Earthsea...

It is fun selling tho' but really unless it was a killer deal, I wouldn't buy electronics as such... I figure I can get it new, on sale, cheaper with a warranty much easier.

I'm in the sandtrap level, taking on two gunships at the prison, while my bugs follow me. I cannot take these damn things down. One is bad enough, but two??? (I'm also playing 'hard' level) How many shots does it take? I can't find anymore health and even though I'm running back and forth from the rocket reload bin to the dumpster, I always get wasted. I've even tried throwing bait balls at the gunships so the bugs will go after them and draw fire, but this doesn't help. I've been trying to beat this part for two days now.

What I did was crouch behind the rocket launcher ammo bin... shot, refill, shoot, refill, save game, run for health, save, run to ammo bin, shoot, save and so on and so on....

It is a very hard level to pass... and most annoying really but fortunately there are only 2 ships.  Save game is your friend here.

It did take me about 15 tries to get through it.

The Mallorean- that is the second 5 books in the series

He has another series out to- the Elenium - only 3 books, followed by the Tamuli which is 3 more books to finish up that series.

Lots of reading with that.

I am actually re-reading all of them now.... pretty good imho.

Fortunately it only occurs when I choose "save" and then after I choose ok... the game kind of freezes/stutters for a good 30 seconds now.

I have a tendancy to save often and this really breaks the the mood.

I installed the undo but it didn't seem to help.

Anyone else get the massive stuttering during the save game function?

Oddly, that is the only time I get it so that is really not so bad... but it is still pretty annoying.
