That's why the Air Force just announced that they're retiring 286 aircraft, the F-22 program was chopped, chopped again, and now finished with 1/3 of the initial requisition, the contract for the Global Hawk Block 30 has been cut by 1/3 while we keep the U-2 in service, and the DoD is looking at a total of $487 billion in cuts over the next decade.

So why are you bitching about a movie that cost $18 million or less to make, and got $13 million from Relativity Media for the rights?

Oh, I wasn't talking about the money it made to make the movie, but the fact that it is not REALLY a movie but a commercial.  And I am smart enough to realize that.  What scares me is that so many people are not.

All I see is a propaganda film by the government to remind us that we NEED to continue to spend millions on our military because, hey terrorists are in YOUR neighborhood.  If it is a "documentary" then call it one and don't try to pretend it is something else.

I am all for "we need really cool and expensive military shit" but, can't we just take a little of that and take care of our own country first- AND there are no terrorists in my neighborhood- I know 'cause I checked!!

45  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Amazon Kindle: Kindle Fire, Touch and Keyboard unveiled! Lending Unleashed! on: January 09, 2012, 07:14:20 PM
I have a Nook (imho it is a far superior piece of hardware than the Kindle touch- Wife has the kindle and frankly the Nook is much spiffier) for reading and a Fire for everything else.

I have now had my Fire for 2 weeks.

Movies- love it- perfect size for lap sitting.  I travel a lot.  All the hotels have wifi so between Prime and Netflix, I am covered.  The size and weight are perfect for laying in bed or sitting at the desk eating takeout and watching.

Apps and such.  I use it every boring.  I ready the NYtimes, USA today, AP feed and a few others.  Don't need a news paper delivered when I get it all for free.  That said, the Apps are VERY limited.  It is the Amazon app store, not the Android app store.  I hope that changes soon.  I have some apps on my phone that I would love on my Kindle but alas they are not offered yet. That is my big downside right now to the Fire...While there may not be many apps out there I want, I *feel* like there are so that is an issue for me.

Email- I have both my verizon pop acct and my gmail- they both work great.

Websurfing- works just fine- frankly I never open my laptop any more at home- no reason when that little 7 inches is sitting on the coffee table next to my beer.

Reading- I am a huge proponent of e-reader/e-ink.  I love it.  I think everyone in the world should have an e-reader.  I will always travel with BOTH the fire and the kindle/nook.  Not a big deal-they are both small and light but for full time reading, e-ink is great.  Plus, if you go sit by the pool- that LED screen just won't cut it.  Plus it is lighter and thusly easier to hold.  I do have the comics app on the fire -ComicsX I believe- anyway that works just fine.  You may have to expand an bit on some of the small text but no biggie.  I just got my first magazine sub on it- PC Gamer- I was NOT going to spend 9 bucks to get the SWTOR issue when the sub is 2 dollars a month and I can cancel for no charge in 2 weeks.  Verdict?  I like it- it is not perfect- there is some size issue again- you would not have that on the iPad but, for a 200 dollar tablet that is this slick- I could not be happier.

Bottom line, for the price, this thing is fantastic.  I do need to couple it with an e-reader but I knew that going it- it was never meant to replace an e-reader and it doesn't but...now I get all those spiffy .99 book deals from Amazon, I can watch some silly old movies that I never got around to watching, and really there is not much of a downside- all for 200 dollars.

Oh a note on that 29.00 mar ware case- get it.  Works like a charm. Compact, sturdy, and the stand works great for movies and it doesn't make the Fire BIG.

I know I am a bit late and rambling but frankly I think there is too much "it's not an iPad" and other negative talk about the Fire.  My kid has an iPad and there is no way you can read for a long period of time- it is too heavy.  That said, a bigger screen is nice for magazines, movies and such but it is also 300 dollars more.  If I had an iPad 2 I would not have a Fire for sure- but since I don't...I got the Fire.  Would I trade it for an iPad 2?  Maybe but only if you give me the 300.00....Cause I just don't see it being that much better.  But again, different device, different crowd, different market.

I grabbed a refurbed from Dell about 8 months ago.  It was in perfect condition- looked like it had never been turned on at all.  With the discount from the outlet, free shipping and a 15% off coupon, I was able to get much more bang for my buck-Skyrim plays on Ultra...smile

If I do need a new desktop, I am definitely starting at the Dell outlet (mind you I have always had good experiences with Dell).

50  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Nook question on: October 07, 2011, 03:18:18 PM
As a recent Nook Touch owner, I absolutely love it.  It is a fine piece of hardware and is great to read on.

Kindle to Nook-

1) Get Calibre
2) Google DRM kindle Calibre remove or something like that
3) follow the instructions for the plug in (they are very specific)
4) Upload un-drm'd books on to Nook
5) Read

Oh and the one button buy a book over wifi---VERY dangerous smile

So while it's easy to advise others to "just don't go", it's also an uninformed piece of advice.

Then again, maybe they will get the hint and either dump the crappy 3D or show more 2D showings.  Like I said, I may not count for much in the way of movie tickets but I am not giving them a 10 dollar surcharge again for a 2D movie pawned off as a 3D movie.
52  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Who Killed 3D? on: October 05, 2011, 04:02:04 PM
I viewed 3D as another way of saying "10 dollar surcharge for this movie for no reason at all other than we are greedy". I had to see Tangled in 3D when I took my daughter-it was the only option- and after that I vowed NEVER to see a 3D movie again.
53  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Advice wanted: Suing someone in Small Claims Court? on: August 15, 2011, 09:13:48 PM
It costs about 25 bucks to sue in small claims.

You can sue for $7500.00.

You can pay extra to have the Sheriff serve the paperwork- I suggest you do.  If you win, you will get all your costs back as well.

Bring your witness.  Have your witness and you write out statements- make 4 copies and type them.
Bring photos- make 3 or 4 copies.
Estimate for bike.
If you missed work, a note from your employer
If you are hurt- ie cuts, scrapes, take photos of those as well

You cannot use a lawyer in Small Claims.  Plus you don't need one.  Go to the nearest courthouse to the accident- many courthouses have a Small Claims advisory group that helps you out.  But the paperwork is fairly simple.  You need their name address, etc...plus a sentence of what happened and how much you are suing for.

You are entitled to repairs, any other out of pocket expenses including time off from work or any items that may have been damaged besides the bike.
If you were hurt, ask for the remainder up to 7500 after you tally up all your costs.  You can be hurt and not go to the doctor but you need evidence of injuries and it is a bit harder but it can be done. Especially if you have no health insurance and the injuries are minor, if your option is the ER well explain to the judge that spending the day in the ER for cuts and bruises was not something that you felt was necessary.   The judge will decide was is fair based on what you give him and what you tell him.

Small claims is NOT a joke- if you get a judgement against a responsible party you can put a lien on the sale of their house or garnish wages...a judgement in Small Claims has the same strength as a judgement in Superior Court - just the money amount is smaller.

You must have an ID on the guy though.  If you only have the plate number, go to the police station right away with the  photos and file a counter report- explain what happened, and if they are cool they will take care of it for you...if they don't run the plate, you get a lesson- always call the police.

I hope that helps a bit too.
54  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Netflix vs Hulu: Fight! on: July 29, 2011, 03:26:53 PM
Posting so I can see what people say.  Yesterday I cancelled my disc portion of Netflix and dropped to streaming only.  I have my Apple TV (which is simple and awesome) for my streaming and renting from Apple,  and we have FIOS so tons of on demand movies....I figure some months I will probably spend the 20.00 Netflix was going to charge me but some months I won't.

And now if I have that disc sitting there for 3 weeks I won't feel like I am losing money because, well it won't be sitting there!

And I am interested in what people think about Hulu ....so no vote for me yet.

59  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: To Beer or not to Beer? on: April 08, 2011, 08:59:06 PM
Let me also quip .... yes indeed, every day is beer day.  Remember what Ben Franklin said: Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

Although that is apparently exactly what he said...ah well, it is what he MEANT today dammit!

Ok so let me add these then:

You can’t be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline; It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer.”
– Frank Zappa

“If God had intended us to drink beer, He would have given us stomachs.”
– David Daye

“I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.”
– Homer Simpson

“24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence?”
– Stephen Wright

I think the trend is quite clear.  Bah, now I need to stop at Bevmo on the way home...heh.

<rant about motorcycles and generalizations removed>

Sorry for the rant but I hear it and have to overcome it every single day.

Ok that said, I would seriously consider renting the bike before you buy it.  For the last 5 years I have ridden my awesome V-Star 650 and I love it...to a point.  The kicker for me was a 1200 mile trip to Reno and back.  A 650 (or the 883 for that matter) is NOT a long distance bike.  Under 50 miles at a time, no problem at all, but going up to say a 1000 or higher will give you a huge boost in comfort.  Point in fact, I went to a '03 Electra Glide HD and the difference is amazing.  My daughter (who is 13 and loves a ride to school on it) said the back seat felt like our sofa.  Yeah it is a bit big but once you get used to it it is a sweet ride, but certainly a different kind of ride.

If you are not planning any long trips, that bike will indeed kick ass.  Oh and take the safety class.

http://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlineSales/Online/SecondaryInventorySearch.aspx?rn=7716&SC=&c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh

in a nutshell, Dell Refurb Mini 10 for approx 300.00.  I have one- grabbed it with a 6 cell, refurb with a 15% coupon from their twitter page- delivered for 268.00 and I love it.  If you want to type, surf, skype, email ...all that, it is perfect.  The keyboard is 92% I think so after you practice a bit, you should be fine.

You can go new, for a bit more but for limited needs, saving money is always good and even as a refurb, i have had 0 issues in the 18 months I have had this.

The show ended last season very well.  When it was over I was really excited about the new season and it really has been a disappointment this season...basically nothing has happened and it has gotten bogged down in soap-opera details and forgotten where the coolness of the show was.

I am disappointed that they are pulling it but not totally surprised.  Too bad, because I really liked the show and it had huge potential.

I was trying to enjoy it...and I was ALMOST there when I hit the ending.  That destroyed any amount of enjoyment I was hoping to have by watching the movie.

Go ahead and watch it, esp if you want to complete the series, but then immediately forget what you just saw.

It really is bad.

And yes, the endings of all 3 other movies were much better than this silly ending.
