1  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Latest Patch for Fallout New Vegas is a game killer on: July 21, 2011, 08:05:31 AM
Lesson worth taking away:  if you are going to mod your game, you are going to have to know what mods you have installed and when a big patch is imminent you have to either disable auto-patching in steam, or know what mods you're running and be willing to do some diligence.

In this case, as soon as the new patch went live, the New Vegas Nexus boards lit up with folks reporting this same problem.

Here's the fix, and crossposted from this same post at OO.

Quote
Well-reported problem, well-reported fix.

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=42729

What is the problem?: The problem is that we get a creepy ghoul sound, screen fades, we can't move, and it repeats. This fixes that error...

Ok, so my other version of this mod didn't work. I've tried everything to disable that script so I finally decided to just disable what it does.

NOW UPDATED AS OF 7/8/2011

New Version now with NO SIDE EFFECTS

Install Instructions:
Put both .esps into FalloutNV/Data folder, then in FOMM move one the the .esps right below FalloutNV.esm and another at the very bottom of the loadorder list. That should fix the problem. Load a clean save with no mods, then whatever save you want. (it seemed to work for me that way). There is no particular order (which one is up and which one is down) because they are both the same.

Well that's good to know!

Anyways it's still down, I have no idea what's going on (I can't SSH in) and Rip's email hasn't work in a month or so.  I'll see if I can get a hold of Arcanis.

It might be time to have it put down.
3  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: James Ellroy on: June 10, 2008, 06:07:28 PM
Yeah, Ellroy is basically writing his own alternate history of the US in postwar times.

First, the "LA Quartet", in order:

1.  "The Black Dahlia" (Much, much better than the movie)
2.  "The Big Nowhere"
3.  "L. A. Confidential"
4.  "White Jazz"

Then comes the "American Underground" trilogy:

1.  "American Tabloid"
2.  "The Cold Six Thousand"
3.  "Blood's A Rover" (to be released this year?)

The second trilogy picks up where "White Jazz" leaves off.   I'm a huge Ellroy fan, so my opinion is far to biased to be of much use.  I think the whole shebang is worth reading.

Well, it is the internet, after all.

Nice Don Mossi avatar, btw!  Until Ezekiel Astacio with all that awful shit on his face pitched for the Astros a few years ago, Mossi was easily the ugliest player in major league history.

I will sample this POOP.

Is whether there is anything like the Stealth Overhaul mod in this package or the Unofficial Oblivion fixes?

I left stuff like Stealth Overhaul out with a reason.  I wanted to make a big framework for mods that can stand alone for a lot of folks...

...but which also allows people to install their own class- and character-specific mods.  There are a ton of great bow/archery mods, but I didn't include them since people doing mage classes wouldn't care.  There are a ton of great magic mods out there that I didn't include because folks doing melee toons and stealth toons wouldn't care.

After I finished POOP, I installed it and started a game to play strictly as almost an alternative life, so I put in a mod that requires my guy to eat, sleep, and drink.  Now, I know that would annoy a lot of players, so I left it out of POOP, but it's a mod that fits the specific way I want to play this particular guy.  That's what POOP does--it can work as a great standalone, but it also shouldn't cause you any conflicts if you want to keep adding more and more modded content to the game yourself later.

POOP includes the Oblivion Mod Manager, Oblivion Script Extender, the Official patch, and all unofficial patches.

I been keeping an eye on your POOP at Popehat, glad to see it's done.  Any recommended system specs. for playing with your POOP?

A reasonably fast CPU, preferably a dual-core, a video card with at least 256mb VRAM, and probably 2gb system RAM.

Guys, I'd like to introduce the Popehat Oblivion Omods Project, or POOP.

I drew inspiration from the GoneGold/OO Morrowind DVD mods project as well as Lum's Oblivion Mods Omnibus from a few years ago and Jason McCullough's never quite released here but similar package.

First off, it's all done. Every mod is packed as an OMOD, and everything you need is in the POOP already--OBMM, OBSE, Wrye Bash, the official and unofficial patches for the DLC and Shivering Isles content.

Here's what's in the rest of the POOP:

World Graphics:
1. Qarl's Texture Pack 3, Redimized and Further Reduced as an OMOD. (Scripted to allow you to pick the sweet spot between graphics and performance)
2. Three flavors of "Color Maps" and three flavors of "Normal Maps" with instructions on what they do to LOD and distant landscape views, how they affect performance, and how to pick out what works best (Qarl's Normal Maps and Qarl's Better Tiling)
3. Three flavors of "Noise" filtering (Koldorn's) to work with the "pepper" caused by patch 1.2
4. Two choices of View When Distant: AEVWD (Almost Everything View When Distant) and a smaller version for slower GPUs: Tamriel VWD + Chapels Extras
5. Natural Environments for habitats and vegetation
6. Atmospheric Weather System for skies and weather
7. Beaming Sunglare for better sun
8. Enhanced Water for those who don't like Natural Environment's
9. Low Poly Grass for the performance boost
10.Weather Inside (Seasons) for weather sounds when inside buildings
11.Gorier Blood
12.Real Lava
13.Illumination Within Revived
14.Clocks Of Cyrodiil
15.Improved Signs
16.Improved Doors and Flora

"Game Fixes"
1. DarNified UI in OMOD form
2. Color Map Mod 1.1
3. Dude Where's My Horse
4. Harvest Flora
5. Harvest Containers
6. Book Jackets + Book Placement (Exclusive to POOP, first time these two mods have ever been OMODed and scripted together that I've seen for easy installation)
7. Durable Equipment/Harder Repairs
8. Denock Arrows
9. Cliff's Better Letters
10. Francesco's Leveled CreaturesItems
11. Francesco's Optional New ItemsCreatures
12. Quest Award Leveler
13. Kobu's Character Advancement System
14. SM Plugin Refurbish (fixes how DLC quests start, rather than bombard you with them in the first dungeon)

Items & People:
1. Kafei's Better Amulets
2. Kafei's Better Rings
3. Better Looking Tools
4. Fine Weapons
5. Rusty Items
6. Imperial Armor Replace
7. VA's Better Gold
8. Visually Enchated Weapons
9. TNR Tamriel's NPC's Revamped, All Races Final
10. Slof's Horses
11.Mike's Clothes Replacer

The Always Controversial Optional Folder:

Unique Landscapes:
1. Ancient Redwoods
2. Ancient Yews
3. Chorrol Hinterland
4. Colovian Highlands
5. Lush Woodlands
6. Rolling Hills
7. The Heath

(Yes, there are more Unique Landscapes out there; POOP feels that they alter the game too much and/or upset the balance of it to the point of breaking it.)

Game Fixes, Or Not (proceed at your own risk):
1. Realistic Ragdolls & Force
2. Action Ragdolls
3. Real Lights
4. Reneer's Guard Overhaul 1.79
5. DeadlyReflex

Side Quests:
1. Kvatch Rebuilt
2. Glenvar Castle
3. The Lost Spires

Finishing Touches:
1. Streamline 3.0
2. Wrye Bash
3. TES4LODGen (this incredible tool snoops your .ini directory and data folder and collects all mods and makes sure they appear as View When Distant too.

Comes with full instructions on how to install everything and make every OMOD here play well together.

Every mod is either in OMOD format (for easy installation and removal) or another single-click push-button format.

This is our initial POOP, but I can attest that everything works, as I did the install three times in a row successfully before calling this a release candidate.

Working now to see if swapping RAID cards or HDDs will resolve the issue. Will post an update when I have time.

Good game all.

I probably underestimated Scoop's trust in me, and blew it by coming out.  Ah well.

When I did come out, I sent Purge a PM telling him to be dubious and distrust me and question me and really get in my face to put some "distance" between us....and then his next post was "I think we should really trust Trigg..." Ouch!  biggrin  Once I got made as a wolf, that post made it all too obvious who my teammate was.  In any event, well-played Village!

DarkEL is doing a poor imitation of a Seer, and I cannot figure out what he did it for, but he is clearly a wolf.

I can't tell if Trig is full of shit or not with coming out claiming to be a sear.

The biggest problem I have so far is that if he is the sear, why did he just out himself?  What did he gain from it?  Maybe an attempt to save himself because he was getting votes?

My gut is still telling me that Scoop is a wolf but others are rising fast on the chart and may have to change votes soon.

Regards,
Pig

I wasn't going to be around as much on Friday/Saturday, and knew I was sitting one vote away from being hanged.  Rather than log in and find out I was dead (and silenced), I figured I ought to at least give the village what useful information I could, such as:

1.  Who the Seer was,

2.  Who had been scanned, and the results of same.

Sadly, my two scans failed to uncover a wolf.  Whether I die today or tonight, perhaps the info I've provided can do the village a bit of good.

withdraw triggercut

question #1 what trail did you leave?

Am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt at the moment. Also, for those villagers who are new here....claiming seer is a age old trick by the wolf side. Am simply stating that...not saying triggercut is a wolf...simply saying keep that in mind.

Next question - why didnt you choose any of the other GT folks?

Why were you so sure that it had to be an OO person.

On question 1:  Really the biggest trail I left was to never have accused a person I knew to be innocent.  Austin noted it earlier when he placed his vote on me.  The other thing I hopefully have going for me is that if you'll look at day one, I had some suspicions I noted, but other than a brief vote on Remus that was withdrawn, I stayed away from voting activity.  My thoughts to that point were simply that I might inadvertently give away my role as Seer, and I didn't want to unfairly give the impression that I was voting for a wolf I'd scanned, when I'd only scanned an innocent to that point.

On question 2:  I should think it obvious, really.  They're the more experienced players.  If Austin or Remus is a wolf, either would be a supremely dangerous adversary to have in a game where the village is composed with a majority of players in their first game.  By the same token, finding either (or both) to be innocent makes them powerful allies of the village to start to put together a "voting bloc" of innocents.  Take a look at the earlier vote from today.  I waited until Austin placed a vote on you to follow him, and then tried to explain that away by making something up about you (Newcastle) being the third vote on Scoop.  To be honest, I just made that up to throw off anyone who might notice at some later point that Austin and I were voting together a lot.  (When Austin put his vote on me, I declined to follow that one, though....slywink)

Okay after doing a little research on previous things that triggercut has said and ways that he's voted - I'm pretty much in the camp of thinking that he's a wolf.

In his claim to be the seer - he said that on his first day - he scanned Austin and determined that he was innocent. Yet on at least two occasions since then - he has claimed suspicion / doubt about Austin.

Quote from: triggercut on October 09, 2007, 05:43:41 PM

If Scoop is guilty, Austin is his likeliest cohort.

Another thing that I guess I missed earlier this week was a comment that he made that seemed to indicate a wish to hurry up the game.

Quote from: triggercut on October 16, 2007, 04:50:05 AM

"Aggressive"?

Dude, it's been nearly 5 days since anyone placed a vote on anyone in this fershlugginer game.  Time to stop the foot-dragging, and Newcastle and Scoop are as good a place to start as any, based on some of the things we've seen.

So for me - those comments are evidence of slip-ups on his part and confirm my suspicions. I say triggercut is a wolf.

I think you're reading too much into innocuous comments and my desire to try to keep the only surviving scannee I have remaining alive.

1.  In the first comment, I listed all the names of folks from OO who I'd played a game like this with in the past.  I thought about leaving Austin's name off the list, but realized that if Remus or Newc was a wolf, they'd likely see that and make some connection between us as either Seer/Scan target (or worse, two wolves.)

2.  Just  simple vote analysis, and a troubling one at that.  My analysis here isn't foolproof, and it's one of the more troubling reasons why I couldn't work up a whole lot of excitement for calling for Scoop's lynching, despite the suspicious nature of a few of his actions.  I almost left Austin's name out of this, but figured that once I was following this line of hypothetical analysis, reaching the wrong conclusion would look suspicious and be noted.

3.  Going from Friday until nearly Tuesday with nothing happening in the game ought to have made anyone--Seer, villager, wolf--want to see the game get moving again before it died (not to get too meta, but the alleged "current" game I'm in over at OO basically "died" right at it's climactic moment when one of the players stopped playing; I was a little concerned that we were heading in that direction here as well and wondering what the heck I'd done...slywink)

Yes, it is within the scope of the rules, and that's part of my job--convincing the village of my role.

BTW, Austin, now you know why I never accused you...slywink

...and Newcastle, I was indeed hiding some things....

I'm left to ponder as to whether the wolf wagon is attempting to roll on me.  If so, I think I'll withdraw Scoop for the moment.  If he were a Wolf, he could have easily sent me up the noose at some point in the day.
26  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Welcome GTville-The Werewolves have come to play- Remus West is wolf chow on: October 20, 2007, 03:35:23 AM
Well, I'm sitting one vote away, so I suppose now is the time.

I *have* been trying to lay low.  I've also been trying to not accuse certain folks of anything.

I'm the Seer.

I wanted to wait on announcing it until I had positively visioned a wolf...but it didn't happen.

So.  I'm dead either in the noose by the hands of villagers, or overnight at the hands of the wolves.  So be it.  Hopefully I can at least give you all some guidance to work with.

Night one, I visioned Austin.  He's an innocent villager.

Night two, I visioned Remus.  He was innocent as well...but you all didn't need me to tell you that.

So there it is.  Hopefully that'll help with some further vote analyzation.   I can honestly say that I rather expected Austin or Remus to be a wolf, and was rather surprised (and disappointed) when that wasn't the case.   In any event, perhaps this offers some little hope to my village.
27  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Welcome GTville-The Werewolves have come to play- Remus West is wolf chow on: October 19, 2007, 12:04:28 AM
For Austin, some voting analysis.

On day one, we got one player to three votes (DarkEL), one player to four votes (Scoop), and one player to five (Ike).

The DarkEL 3:
Ike, Purge, Scoop

The Scoop 4:
Bulletpig, Scoop, Ike, Remus

The Ike 5:
Newcastle, DarkEL, Purge, Scoop, Remus

I highlighted villagers proven innocent in green for ease of use.

Some notes on this:

1.  One player appears in all three votes:  Scoop.

2.  Ike placed the most votes on day 1, with six different votes.  Remus also placed six votes.

3.  Scoop placed votes for four different people:  Dark, Bulletpig, Ike, Scoop, and then Ike.  Three of those votes put him in the railroad category....but obviously the self-vote skews this view a bit.

4.  Purge placed two votes, both of which ended up being in the railroad category.  I've been quiety suspicious of him since day one.

5.  Newcastle made one vote, switched it and came back to Ike.  Or something.

Newcastle's play has been almost as bizarre as Ike's.  If Newcastle were a wolf, why is he jumping on the wagon to lynch a player he'd know to be innocent, especially after those votes are tallied?  Gut reaction is to declare Newc a total innocent, since that'd be a godawful play for a wolf to make...

....so bad, in fact, that it's a good play?  I dunno.

Yesterday I figured that Scoop was probably our highest bet to be a wolf.  Despite my posting that I thought he was innocent, I honestly *don't* think he is.  What I was hoping to see was whether I could make it appear as if Newcastle had fallen into a trap, and if the wolf wagons would roll on him.

It didn't happen, which totally screws up that plan, and makes me suspicious (a little) of a player I thought was innocent (Newcastle).

So now I'm sort of stuck.  I think Scoop is highly suspicious, mostly because I'm buying Bulletpig as innocent.  When I put vote 2 on him, and Newcastle put vote 3 on him, vote 4 never came, much like on the previous day, vote 5 never came.  As soon as I put out a snare to try to catch the two guys I suspected most (DarkEL and Purge), instead of those two guys biting on it, there was Scoop right alongside putting up a vote for Newcastle with me.

So.  If Scoop is innocent, I'd rank the wolf suspects as (in order) 1.  Newcastle, 2. Purge, 3.  Bulletpig
Put me somewhere on that list if you like, since I can only verify my innocence to myself!

If Scoop is guilty, Austin is his likeliest cohort.

For now, I'll switch my vote again, withdraw Newcastle, lynch Scoop

I'm making a vote for Triggercut -- mainly because I don't think he's gotten a single vote yet in this whole game and flying that low under the radar just screams wolf.   ninja

That's as good a reason as any.

Thanks Triggercut. Question for you. Now that you have voted for Newcastle, part of your rationale must be because he cast the third vote on someone.

What do you think about bulletpig as a wolf? In both days he has been one of the first people to cast a vote?

Being first to cast a vote doesn't have a lot of currency.  One of the oldest and best strategies in these games (when it still requires 3-5 votes for a lynch) is to slap a vote on someone and see what happens.

At this point it seems worth mentioning that vote records from this game are going to be skewed somewhat.

Withdraw Scoop.

I don't think he's a wolf at all, to be honest.  Maybe so...but I rather doubt it.  I was waiting to see whether it'd be Purge, DarkEl, or Newcastle to throw vote 3 on him, or if Austin would switch votes.

Lynch Newcastle.

Purge is attracting a little suspicion from me, but not nearly as much as Scoop is.

Having played the "I'm a new guy who couldn't *possibly* grasp all the nuances and strategies" role to the hilt as a bad guy in another recent game, I'm automatically suspicious of someone else doing it....slywink  That and the whole "I'll vote however DarkEl votes" thing just seems like it could be quite a little bit wolfy.  Keeping my vote on Scoop for the moment.

I still think Remus was trying to string Scoop into a trap.  Perhaps not, but I'd like to see what happens with him having a couple of votes on him.

Interesting that the two of you would both vote so quickly (in terms of total discussion -- not time) and with so little explanation for either of your votes.

At first that made me wonder if perhaps you two might be the wolves -- itching to get to another night -- but then i thought about it more and I really think that a wolf wouldn't draw attention to themselves by being aggressive like that on the 2nd day.  So that leads me to believe that the two of you are innocent.

Not that this helps bring me any closer to who I should vote for - but I think it's a good theory. So are there reasons you guys are voting for those people?

"Aggressive"?

Dude, it's been nearly 5 days since anyone placed a vote on anyone in this fershlugginer game.  Time to stop the foot-dragging, and Newcastle and Scoop are as good a place to start as any, based on some of the things we've seen.

I could go either way, but I've always believed in following my first impulse.  So...lynch Scoop.

So, can I use the lack of participation by...anyone?....as a basis for leveling accusations like DarkEL and Bulletpig?

Ok, even more curious.

Newc cruises in last night and tries to withdraw his vote of Ike, if I read his post correctly.  Curiouser and curiouser, because Ike was already at 5 votes and thus doomed.   That's very, very interesting.

Right now Scoop is attracting my suspicion.

As noted by nearly everyone, he casts the third quicklynch vote on DarkEL, then casts a fourth vote on Ike...then puts a vote on himself....which he then rescinds when he gets to 4 votes.  Then he gets back on the Ike hobbyhorse and Ike eventually dies.

That is one HECK of a lot of lynch bandwagon voting right there.  Maybe n00bness?  Absolutely.  Maybe not though.  One thing that is worth examining is the circumstances behind the final two votes that sent Ike to the gallows last night.  I think all of us villagers understand that we'd happily trade a villager life even up for catching a wolf.  No contest about it.  I also know that Remus loves to set up "situations" to see how players react, and then use those reactions to move his opinion on guilt or innocence of individual players.

So now take a look at what Remus did just before Ike went to the gallows:  he made Scoop a curious offer, offering to put the fifth vote on Ike if Scoop would place the fourth.  Scoop did it, and Remus followed through, but even as he did so, Remus explained that he didn't think Ike was really a wolf.  The question then leaps to my mind:  why would Remus set up a player he had a hunch was a villager for a certain lynch if he wasn't setting up some sort of trap of sorts?  Could the wolves have realized this and could that be the reason Remus was eaten last night?  If we follow the notion that perhaps one of our wolves is a GT'er and the other an OO'er, perhaps the less-experienced player put his foot in Remus's snare, and before the more experienced player could PM him a warning?

I may be overanalyzing this, but a lot of Scoop's behavior seems quite suspicious to me.

And speaking of suspicious....why is Newcastle once again (inside joke) voting to lynch someone *after* the body is stiff in the noose?

Hey now!  I'm all here and stuff.  Hell, I've been around for hours at a time the last 2-3 nights, but you folks roll up the sidewalks and head to bed early 'round these parts, so after posting something around midnight or so, I'd wait to see if there was any other give and take to respond to....and nothing.

....and FWIW, my internet service provider utterly sucks, at least at delivering internet to my (soon-to-be-former) residence.   I think it's all the trees or something, because we lose electricity at the drop of a hat (or raindrop), phone service has to be called out regularly to fix line noise, and cable goes out at least once every six weeks.  Which is why I'm moving....

Wow!  What an interesting 24-hour cycle we've had in this thread, huh?

Ike gets 3 votes pretty fast.  So fast, in fact, that Remus has to pull off him to keep the wave from sweeping him.

Scoop becomes chief wolf suspect.  He zooms to 3 votes, and Remus mistakenly (or was it?) calls him at 4.  As soon as Remus calls Scoop at 4, Ike puts a vote on the Scoop to put (or so we thought) the Scoop's head in the noose.  But...nope, recount.  Ike's vote left Scoop at 4, and Scoop sagely pulls his self-vote and Ike is pretty quickly back in the noose again, this time for good.

At this point, I'll say that Ike looked really suspicious to me before any of this.  I really dug the aggressive play-style, but it could also seem fairly wolfish.  Hanging that vote on Scoop sure would've confirmed suspicions for me!

So.  I think there's a good chance we hang a wolf here.  The problem will under the chance that Ike was a villager.  In that situation, we're a little bit in the dark, or more than we normally would be.  I'll explain for the rookies:  even if you accidentally lynch a fellow villager on the first day, analyzing the way the vote developed to do the lynch can still make that death at the hands of friends helpful to the team.  You can look to see who got the "wolf wagon" rolling on a player and that can be used to confirm (or dismiss) suspicions based on other data.

In this case, though, Ike looked *so* Wolfy, that if he comes up unWolf, it'll be tough to pin too much "bandwagon" motive on the votes that hanged him.  Heck, if I'd been here, I'd have likely cast a vote on him, as much as those who did.

Cross your fingers.  We could use this lynch to be accurate.

One quick note and then some observations:

I'm in the process of moving (this weekend, actually), and the cable company got a little overzealous about switching off my internet.  No biggie, it'll help me stay focused on cleaning and packing instead of procrastinating in threads like this....but for the next few days, my time online is going to be smaller.  I'll still be logging in at work a few times a day to check the thread and post something, but I wanted to be proactive about explaining any changing in posting pattern between now and Sunday and then back to normal after that.

Ok.

First off, withdraw Remus.  I don't trust him, but as Austin put it so well, none of us OO'ers trust each other, so that's that.

The move on DarkEL looked a little suspicious to me, too.  I'd not be surprised to find that one of those three initial votes on him was a wolf.   I'm starting to think that Dark is probably not a wolf, so that means he probably is....but for now Ike and Scoop seem to be perking my radar.
