Lol I was just telling my wife about MS Gaming Zone. I got X-Wing vs Tie Fighter off eBay and it came with a Zone coaster in it. I had forgotten all about that service. I still don't know why they killed it. As I recall it actually worked.

For its time, it worked great. The matchmaking for Motocross Madness was what I specifically used, but I think all the "Madness" series were similar setups. Just a bulk list of lobbies that were named according to the event. The races were quick, so it was very easy to jump in and out of games without much down time.

I was bummed when the discontinued it. Even though Motocross Madness 1 and 2 were pretty old by the time they pulled the plug, there were still lots of people on all the time.

So I own RFG on Steam. I decided I wanted to play it just now. But WL won't allow me. It says I must log into WL first. Ok so I log in. Now it says I must patch to play. So I can't play without patching even if i wanted to. So ok I patch. It does it's thing and restarts the game. But wait..WL wants me to log in first...umm ok..I log in AGAIN....now wait...it wants to patch...uhh wtf?..ok I patch AGAIN. Does it's thing and wait...it wants me to do it all again and again or I can't play. So now I can't play. WTF is this crap?

I HATE WINDOWS LIVE! I've said since the they came out with WL that it was made to kill PC gaming and I've never been more sure than tonight.

So how am I ever going to be able to play a game I bought and paid for? It's late. Maybe tomorrow I'll check the Steam forums. But this SUCKS!

I did this patch when it originally came out. It required 3 reboots and it crapped out a few times during the process because the server was busy (I presume). The whole thing took about 45 minutes, at which point I wasn't even in the mood to play the game any more.

The STEAM/GFWL games are a similar high wire act... I had to update F1 2010 and I swore it wasn't going to work. Similar thing with STEAM downloading and sending me CD keys, and GFWL doing whatever the hell it had to do. I just get the feeling MS is going to abandon this system in a year or two and just leave users high and dry like the did with the MS Gaming Zone games.

I have no clue what most of those sites are - Pogo? never heard of it.

The number 1 gaming is of course, Gamingtrend!

Pogo actually morphed out of one of the premier online gaming sites, TEN. They provided lobby play for Duke Nukem 3D and other 90's stuff.
Its kind of a shame that many of the great online sites have gone this route. I used to love playing Motocross Madness on Microsoft Zone. That turned into something just like Pogo when it became the MSN Games (something like that, anyway) and they dropped all the support for CD based game multiplayer matchups.

I don't really consider these gaming sites in the traditional sense. They are actually more like traditional TV and radio stations in the sense that they offer free content and make their money on advertising.

someone is already doing Mechwarrior.

Is this the one that was sent a Cease And Desist? They did a gameplay trailer that shows two mechs fighting in a city.
If that is the one, I believe development is stalled on it because of a lawsuit regarding ownership of mech design copyrights.

Situation may have changed, but last I read that was the status of what was to be Mechwarrior 5. This was a while back, so I hope situation has changed and I am wrong.

You're missing something... The Logitech G27. You might find cheaper elsewhere, but since you were looking at Newegg, here it is.

Just look for 64 bit versions of drivers whenever you update, thats about it. I've been running it since the beta and the full version since it came out without any complaints. Every newer mainstream game I've tried has run fine. Some older ones are a little flakey (Far Cry is one), but still ran.Very solid OS.
DCS Blackshark is the only new game that acted weird... Menu's and stuff were all screwed up, but thats fixed now.

I'm not sure what they were thinking with that part, it was kinda insane.

Its easily avoided by going around and through the Renegade camp. You can never befriend them, so I always took it as a chance to loot some stiffs and maybe find some good stuff to trade.

As much as I loved Call of Pripyat, playing through Clear Sky with the Complete patch felt like the most "living" game world. It created a lot of issues, but the depth the developers went to make the world dynamic is incredible. The Complete team even said it was mainly just a graphical update since making game changes can be so volatile and wildly affect other aspects of the game.

No problem at all. Yeah, you may run into problems if you're trying to play early Windows 95/98 titles, but that has been an issue throughout Vista's years as well.

For playing anything semi-current, you won't run into any issues at all as far as gaming goes. I've been running Vista 64 and now Windows 7 64 on my gaming rig and haven't had a problem.

and who still plays win 95/98 titles anyways?  Tongue

My wife just got me three new bookcases and requested Roll Eyes that I get my old games out of the cardboard boxes in the garage. Holy-moly, a lot of them are old. Like Jane's Longbow. Not the Gold, the original (I also have Longbow 2). Heck, I even have Flight Commander 2, which calls for Windows 3.11  icon_biggrin

Glad I'm not the only one who has old stuff... I have about 100 games on 3.5" floppies, including X-Wing and some old Origin games. One of them, called Aces of the Pacific is on 9 floppies! I have lots of original gen CD stuff too. Anyone who remembers the term "Multi-media PC" will know what I'm talking about. Stuff like 7th Guest and on-rails FMV shooters like Rebel Assault.

Don't mean to derail the thread, but I just had to take a rough count... Around 250 games on CD (those stacks are 2 deep) and 200 on floppy (you can just barely see the corner of one of the floppy containers in the lower right). The sad thing is that this shelf bending mess is the stuff I don't really play. The current stuff is on a shelf by the PC. Definitely a sickness!

16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: gaming on 64-bit Windows 7? on: May 10, 2010, 04:07:29 PM
I've been running 64 bit Windows 7 since the first beta started... I switched over to Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit as soon as it came out.
It runs great, and I can't recall many problems with any modern software. Far Cry (the original) wouldn't run right on 64 bit without the latest patch (I also played through the 64 bit version of Far Cry, which has better textures, but was based on an earlier release and cannot be patched up to latest version).

Also, old games with 16 bit installers won't run. Old Sega stuff from Win95/98 days, etc.

The main issues I have discovered have been hardware related... My old Canon flatbed scanner and Logitech Wingman Force steering wheel are not supported. The sucky thing about this is that its not really Win7's fault, the manufacturers just chose not to support their hardware any longer.

Although MS's "compatibility site" claims Lost Planet Extreme Condition works on Vista 64-bit, the demo wouldn't work for me. So that would still be my big concern on LP2.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit and the first game runs fine (full version).

I'm beginning to think this is going to be a no go for me. I've been able to successfully download and install the MTX client, but when I run it and choose to install MechWarrior 4 nothing happens. The ISP I'm  using doesn't support any type of torrent traffic and I've noticed that that's the type of Internet file exchange that MTX uses. I've also followed some of the alternate links here, but they're all for torrent files which again aren't an option for me. Anyone here know of any other sites for a direct download or a procedure I can use to work around the torrent requirement?

You can switch the download type to http. Its in one of the tabs up top. Once you start the download, you can't switch that setting or it will corrupt the download.

I had a lot of issues getting this going. It kept crapping out and I had to exit and restart MTX to resume. I think I did that about 4 or 5 times before I actually got the game running.

I want to play it again badly, unfortunately I was jaded by the simulation style play of the Activision titles. I still consider MW2:Mercenaries with the Titanium patch among my favorite games of all time. Played it with rudder pedals, a flight throttle and a mouse for aiming instead of stick... Still the ultimate combo for mech games.

That probably really dates me as a gamer.  disgust

If I have to pick PC era, its tough... I think probably 2004. When the demo for the original Far Cry came out, I couldn't stop playing it.
That was basically my intro to open world action games, and nothing linear has really appealed to me since.

Even though the demo was only a mission, the world was still huge but with rather tight boundaries. Hacks soon came out that let you explore much of the game island without being attacked by the helicopters for leaving the game area. So cool to play a game where none of the backgrounds were paintings. If there was a little dot of an island on the horizon, removal of the boundaries let you swim to it.

This game also resulted in about a $1000 upgrade spree on my computer... Crytek has basically driven my recent upgrades. I upgraded again for Crysis.
24  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Red Faction Guerilla with ATI crossfire on: April 07, 2010, 09:10:30 PM
No Crossfire here, but this game has a ton of issues. Often runs bog slow despite having very average graphics.
I enjoyed it a lot and played through the whole thing, but its horribly unoptimized for the PC. I was very happy to hear about the first patch, and after waiting it didn't address any of the performance problems.

I presume you were already on the Red Faction community site, but if not, there is good info to be found there.

I was also sad to have Call of Pripyat end. It lets you continue playing as an open world after that, but its not quite the same playing without having a reason to push the story forward.

The good news is that the Complete mod for Clear Sky was just released. Anyone who played this for Shadow of Chernobyl knows how completely it transformed the game. I'm playing through it now and having a great time.
The game looks a lot better than Call of Pripyat yet still runs smoother. You'd think it was the newer game if you saw them side by side.

Free is a good price for it... Someone needs to wrench it out of the hands of Microsoft.
MW:2 Mercenaries (Activision) still rates as one of my favorite games of all time, even though its completely dated now. Activision made it feel somewhat like a tank simulation, which I feel is exactly correct.

When Hasbro/Microprose got the license for MW3, they toned the simulation down, but it was still pretty good. MW4 was a joke. Ridiculous green screen video cut scenes with horrible acting and humor and controls that were one step away from FPS simple.

Sorry for the rant.  disgust

OK, so I've spent about an hour with this. Its compelling, but I have to say that is makes the STALKER series look polished, and thats no small feat. In my first venture outside the city limits, with really no clue or direction on what I was doing I was involved in a crossfire, looted bodies for weapons and was attacked by a cheetah and a snake.

Trying to get help with my injuries, I was stopped at a checkpoint then witnessed a bus smash right through the gates and proceeded to just drive through. I'm going to give it more of a chance because I love open ended games, but this still feels like a real mess.
You can interact with some characters and it sounds like they are giving you info from parts of the story you haven't accomplished yet. Its very odd and a bit overwhelming.

I did play it for half an hour to get a feel for it, and I found it quite compelling. It really shows it age in graphics, but the dialog tree's and stuff make the game feel really wide open.

Finally finished Call Of Pripyat, though it does have an open ending that lets you continue on to finish other quests/explore if you chose. I have 3 to complete and I've done every quest in the thing in the game (well, except those that are negated by other quests).
I'm not sure right now if I'm going to do the remaining Pripyat quests or start Boiling Point in earnest.

OK... So it took a little longer than I expected. My Amazon.com order came to the States from Canada, but to look at the box you'd think it actually came from the actual Amazon. Corners torn, lots of shelf wear and a $4.97E sticker.

The box had never been opened though, and the contents were fine. Installed the game and the 2.0 patch with no issues. Only played for a few minutes, but this does seem like quite a neat game. I'm going to finish STALKER before I really start this one, but I'm looking forward to it.

I just ordered the DVD version off Amazon. Shipping was as much as the game. I also started looking for the patches to have in anticipation of the release. Like MonkeyFinger found, there is a 192meg UK patch, the US patch is only up to 1.1 and it's less than 1/3 the size.

I went to other places like Gamershell.com to see if there were other versions, but couldn't find anything. Even the Atari forums seem to ignore the game, despite supporting Atari stuff clear back to their console days.

The reasons I ignored this game are all starting to come back to me.  icon_surprised

If you are careful to use cover and move slowly, most of the game isn't overly difficult. If you are getting stuck doing something over and over, look for an alternate solution. There are quite a few.
There are what I consider to be a couple of very frustrating "choke points" in the game.

Spoiler for Hiden:
The spot where you battle the cowboy hat dude in the helicopter when you're on the sinking ship.
There is a spot in the end labs where tons of soldiers pour into a room with mirrored floors.
The Volcano at the end is brutal if you are low on ammo

I've played through the game about 3 or 4 times and these are the spots I usually have to try a few times.
