1  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Cord Cutting Tool on: March 30, 2015, 11:47:54 PM
Cable is here only for the internet and watching sports.  Most tv shows wind up acquired and watched via Plex through a Roku.  Most hockey - Roku.  Missed an NFL game - Roku via NFL Rewind via the NFL Channel on Plex.  Missed some games on ESPN - Roku.  Problem is watching live events not on ESPN, live NFL games, live NHL games airing on NBCSN/NBC/NHLN.  Most of college games are usually available via the ESPN channels on the Roku.  Problem is those on the regular OTA networks.  So cable serves a minor purpose.  At least it isn't what I've read some of you are paying at 136 for me.  Still don't like being forced to pay extra for HD, but sports suck without it.  That's one big scam, IMO.

Anyway, close to being a cord cutter, but can't live without sports and that cord-cutting tool doesn't really address OTA network sports stuff.

Looks like Seattle and Arizona get to battle for the NFC West.

You all have already commented on the disaster in the bay.

The LA/St Louis Rams needed to address one major issue in the off-season, the offensive line.  So, they addressed it by cutting three veteran starters, several backups and replacing them with no one while re-signing a couple of backups.  Fisher and management keep claiming the Rams will address this via FA (still) and the draft.  Problem - there are less than 60 OL FAs available and 5 of them were cut by the Rams. 2 of them are Jaguars who no one will want unless absolutely desperate.  This leaves fixing the OL via the draft.  Yes, it can work, but it takes 2-3 years for that to actually materialize into wins on the field.  Niners fans should know this, because they did it.  Problem - the Rams cut/don't re-sign guys who they develop.  They actually let Saffold go last year (one of the guys they kept this yet), but got him back last season because of an issue with a physical in Oakland.  The mis-handling of the OL has doomed the Rams again to another sub-500 season.  No, Nick Foles won't fix that, considering his success was when the Eagles offensive line was better than last season.

Enjoy fighting for the West, Seahawks and Cardinals fans.   icon_frown

Martin's story and world is so vast and contains so many characters that it can't really be complete.  You can't really wrap that up.  It's sort of like wrapping up the story of England.  Eventually you just have to come to a stopping point, like a history class that ends at Cromwell.  I have a feeling that's how Game of Throne will end, with lots of characters just going about with whomever happens to be king or queen at the end of the book and lots of ways it could still be continued, but no big finale.

Abercrombie did a fantastic job of wrapping up his story in three books and I was really impressed with the way he ended that journey.

Martin's world could have a very fitting end with Winter overrunning the South and everyone winding up dead in Westeros.  Many of them deserve it to end that way.

That's essentially what a woman in California is saying after she posted a racially charged update about Obama's reelection recently.

My favorite part is the vehement denial on her part that she's even remotely racist.  Lady, that ship sailed.

Ummm... how do you define "racism?"

Her rant reads as someone who is prejudiced, not racist.  The two words have significantly different meanings.  Just because the press repeatedly over-uses and mis-uses the word racism, does not mean you should.

The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race

Preconceived opinion not based on reason or experience.

Which one of those sounds more appropriate given her statements.

Post in reference to thread title.

The Fed printing $45 Billion dollars a month and buying US Govt treasuries guaranteed to jack up inflation while everyone's taxes go up at the same time.  I am really glad everyone else re-elected Obama. Roll Eyes

Please - look up the Weimar Republic, 1970s England, and 1990s Yugoslavia.  Those all happened relatively recently and tried to print their way out of debt without controlling spending.  Our current govt keeps on trying to print their way out of debt while not having passed ONE SINGLE BUDGET since Obama took office - even in his first two years when Democrats controlled both the House and the Senate.  WHERE WAS THE OUTCRY THEN???  Had it been a Republican President with Both houses and no budget, everyone would have known about it.

Heck, the latest nonsense - just prior to the election, Obama proposed a budget which NO ONE in either the House or the Senate voted for, because it was ridiculously over the top.  So, now, Obama essentially handed the SAME PROPOSAL to Repubs to solve the fiscal cliff debate????

Go on  - just keep enjoying the Obama "freebies" which every tax payer is actually paying for and will be paying more for shortly.

When was the last time a US Ambassador was assassinated???  Wasn't it 1979????  Yet - NOTHING HAPPENS to those responsible.  They all get to keep their jobs????

If YOU allowed someone to get killed at YOUR job for not providing necessary security when YOU were warned repeatedly that additional security was needed, should YOU keep your job?  Heck - apparently providing new Chevy Volts to the Austrian Embassy for a ridiculous sum is more important than providing security in a high threat area.  The State Dept actually had the nerve to say they did not have the funds to improve security in Libya while they were busy handing money to GM for cars in Austria.

But let's keep ignoring facts and just blame it on "repubs" over-reacting.  Stunning how ignorant many are of all the facts around this and were a "repub" President in office with these same facts, ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, and everyone but Fox would be demanding action be taken.

NO AMBASSADOR DEATHS since 1979, yet somehow this is the "Repubs" issue??????

How many Ambassadors have died under any President since, say, 1900???  Is 112 year too long?  I only know of 2 Ambassadors being assassinated in that time span and BOTH were under Democratic Presidents with extremely weak Foreign Policy stances.

Queen of Versailles was added, too, and it's supposed to be a fantastic documentary.  Don't let the Jersey Shore meets Legally Blonde cover fool you.

IIRC, the husband in that film was the same guy who threatened to lay off employees if Obama won.

But Unions threatening members who do/did not go out and actively support Obama is apparently OK.

Everyone enjoy this while the government keeps printing money at a far faster pace than both Yugoslavia and 1930s Germany while taxes jump for the entire population at the same time.  Obama thought this was a "good thing" back during the debt crisis talks 2 years ago.  Now, he is blaming Republicans for things HE SAID were a good thing.  President Obama has lied, lied and lied again.

The USA was built on Capitalism.  It worked so well, Russia is copying what we did prior to 2004 to better their economy.  Meanwhile, the USA under Obama and the Senate Democratic so-called leadership, is doing everything they can to turn the US Govt into exactly what failed the USSR????  Does this make any friggin' sense??????

More details of the offer can be found here on TSN.

There is seriously significant "give" in this offer compared to anything the owners have done before. NHLPA would be fools to reject this.

Really like this aspect:
- New Player Discipline procedures and protocol incorporating Player appeal rights to a neutral third-party arbitrator for both on-ice and off-ice discipline.

The idea of having this crap in one person's hands administered by the league with nothing but reviews by the league (in other words no independent review outside the NHL) was ludicrous from the get-go, which is how it has been since the last CBA was signed.

Next week should be fun.

Rams will be playing at Seattle with being undefeated in divisional play on the line and Fisher has had the Rams ready for every divisional game this season.

Seattle will be playing for a shot at the division title, although that is very unlikely with the Niners playing the Cardinals.

Looking forward to the game.

I just want to know what the f that guy was thinking diving into a clearly sliding Bradford and giving them 15 yards for nothing. Also Cortland Finnegan is a dirty piece of shit.

From what the announcers said (it wasn't shown on the replay) was that Goldston had already committed when he slid.  I also don't think it was a safety.

It was a safety.  The ball has to reach the line of scrimmage when throwing it away, even when outside of the tackle box, and the ball went out of bounds 3 yards shy of the LOS.  Since it was intentional grounding in the end zone = safety.  FYI - Bradford has had that grounding call made at least 3 times against him this season, just not from his own end zone.

I don't think so, but it was ruled a first down before they reviewed it.  After review it stood.  Honestly, the whole sequence for the review and marking distance took about 5-6 minutes to resolve

Hometown Review.  Replay on shows his knee on the ground and the ball just across the 35 yard line - not a full yard further beyond the 34 yard line.  Unless the distance between Ray Rice's chest and his waist is 3+ feet.

No surprise to  me. Sports Illustrated is reporting that Kaepernick was told he is starting against the Saints.

If that's the case, I hope Smith is done in San Francisco and gives them the finger on the way out the door.  Has he been a disappointment as the #1 pick?  Sure.  But he's turned things around, he's done everything the organization has asked, shown a ton of loyalty, played well within their system, took the team to the NFC title game (and looked to be well on the way to doing so again), is one of the most efficient QB's in the league...and he's going to get benched because the backup played one good game (Matt Flynn, anyone?).  Oh, and Smith is only two weeks removed from playing an almost perfect game against Arizona.
Nothing against Kaep, but I'm going to laugh my ass off if/when this turns into a clusterfuck for the Niners.

Prior to getting injured, Smith looked like crap against St Louis.  I would go so far to say had Smith not been injured, the Niners would have lost that game, instead of ending in a tie.

Well you were partly right Tongue
man what a disappointing game. This is the game the niners should have steamrolled over (like the Bills/Jets game) instead they lay a turd. Couple that with some very bad officiating, like letting the clock run down 1:12 minutes while measuring for the 1st down is beyond excusable. I thought Kapernick's TD should have been reversed, his foot was out of bounds, and I also thought the call against Ray MacDonald for illegal hit to the head was a stretch. At least it was a tie.

Niners better get their act together against the Bears next Monday. It's going to be tough.

You should have seen the hit a couple of weeks ago when the Rams Langford was flagged for the same thing.  Langford is in the process of hitting the QB - as he has already taken his last step and lowered his shoulder to nail the QB in the chest.  The QB ducks into Langford's shoulder causing a shoulder to the head hit.  Result - personal foul for hitting the QB in the head.  Yes, those are crap calls.
18  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NFL 2012 -- Week 10 on: November 08, 2012, 08:52:44 AM
Niners-Rams this weekend.  If the Niners do what New England did on offense (ie - send the outside WRs on fly and post routes while running the TE and RBs on short underneath routes (talking 5 yards or less), it will negate the Rams pass rush and the Rams weak outside LB coverage and the Niners will dominate the Rams.  If the Niners attempt the conventional - run, pass deep, pass for first down type offense - it will be a close game.  What New England did was attack the Rams obvious defensive weakness (OLB and S coverage), which was plainly evident in preseason play, yet no one prior consistently attacked those areas prior to that game in London.  With recent film and the Niners having an excellent TE along with what should be a healthy Frank Gore, it will likely be a long day for the Rams.  However, if the Niners do not pay attention to film and attempt to play however they want, instead of attacking the Rams clear weaknesses, the Rams defense can keep a game close and give the Rams offense the opportunity to win.  The one area Bradford has consistently played well this season is late in games when one score can tie or win the game.  Niners need to build that early lead and not let the Rams stay in the game at all.

Will be interesting to watch for at least two quarters, but if the Niners use game film and attack what the Patriots exposed, this game will be over by half-time.  However, if Alex Smith chokes or the Niners fail to attack those weaknesses, this will go down to a 4th quarter game which the Rams have proved capable of winning if within one score late in the game.

I felt it was poorly written for one reason.  It seemed like when they ran out of things to have characters say, they took the Team America angle and went with "We need a montage!"  Serious over-use of montages this season, which to me is an indication of lazy writers.  Heck, the end of season one with that crappy music was darn near 6 minutes long.

I have to point out that Walking Dead, in my opinion (and that show is far from perfect), at least gets the scrambling to survive part right.

This Bob McKenzie article is excellent.  It describes both sides of the situation.  IMO, the Owners are still the damn problem this time.  NHL Owners cannot during the season tout how wonderful the league is doing nor can the league tout record revenues, and then, when it is CBA negotiation time, claim the Owners and League are not making enough money.  The NHL and the Owners changed the "revenue formula" from the one used when the prior CBA was settled.  Gee... I wonder why the players are ticked off and not bending over this time.

Thursday 10 PM ET is an excellent slot for it, IF folks stay up to watch it.  There is not much competition from over-the-air (OTA) TV.  Not sure what the cable networks will be running at the same time.

OTA competition is ABC's Scandal and a Brian Williams news thing on NBC.  Looks like the cable networks big shows are going to continue to air on Sundays - as they usually do.

Watch this video from the NHL website and listen to Bettman.  Certainly sounds like a lockout is on the way.

After these owners have shelled out these ridiculous contracts this off-season, not to mention the Kovalchuk contract under this CBA, and Bettman has the nerve to say they cannot operate under this CBA unless they reduce player costs.

Owners are the ones shelling out the cash.  Get them under control - not force the players to cave to whatever the NHL wishes.

The Hobbit - 95022 words

The Fellowship of the Ring - ~187000 words
The Two Towers - ~155000 words
Return of the King - ~131000 words

Even if they add all of the LotR appendices to the Hobbit, it is still nowhere near close to the length of the Fellowship of the Ring by itself.  And they now want to make three movies out of it??  Ridiculous.  It just means dragging out the beginning of the journey.  Dragging out the middle of the journey.  And cramming all the action into the end of the third.  Even as a two-movie set, they would still be dragging out the beginning half of the journey.  Unless, of course, they end the 2nd movie with Bilbo getting the Ring, while dragging out the entire 3rd movie.

BS - on bashing the one person who CANNOT respond due to being dead.
