441  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Saw White Noise; was so bad, you should avoid this thread. on: January 29, 2005, 07:34:47 AM
No spoilers from me, but this was the worst movie I've seen since "the Ninth Gate" or "Dracula 2000".  The Forgotten was better, and I wanted to burn myself after watching that one.

Where's my lighter?

Run Screaming.

I said it before in this thread and I'll say it again... You would be surprised what buyers are incapable of telling you their own mailing address.  I delivery confirm, and give feedback when the item gets there for just this reason.

If my buyers want the feedback sooner than that, you'll have to wrestle me for it.  PTHHHHTHBT!   You'll always get feedback from me.  Sit tight.  It's more than I can say for some of my buyers.
444  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / AVG 7.0 Free Edition on: January 26, 2005, 08:48:15 PM
on the 6.0 version there was a line in the main *.ini file  to edit to add more mirrors to the servers from which you could obtain updates, but that's long ago and far away to me now.  they had a post on the old forum, but that does us no good here and now.  Sounds a lot like what you're experiencing.

Avast has been treating me well, and caught some trojans that AVG 6.0 missed immidiatley upon installation.
445  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Biggest eBay Pet Peeve!!! on: January 24, 2005, 11:07:13 PM
Twice as a seller I got shorted on feedback, and I do leave feedback after checking the delivery confirmation to be sure the buyer was competent enough to give me their correct address.  You'd be surprised the people that cannot get their own address right.

Also once as a buyer I left feedback for a seller and got none for my end of the trasaction.

It sucks on both sides, but I say as a seller it sucks more. For one sale I was chatting over IM on a $15 item for an hour answering their questions,  and when they got their item they couldn't be bothered to spend three minutes to give me feedback, good bad or ugly.

I always notify buyers when I get their payment, as well as when I ship... I always provide delivery confirmation, and I always email them when they get their package and I tell them at that time that I have left feedback for them.   It's not like feedback can slip your notice on my sales, you just have to be a self absorbed individual, I suppose.

448  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Do I need a passport to travel to Canada from the US? on: January 12, 2005, 02:53:59 AM
If you have a State photo ID or Driver's liscence, you're set.

If you are really worried, and you don't want to spring for a passport, carry your social security card and your Birth certificate, which are available through the mail for a fee usually under $10, and with a much quicker turn around than a passport.

I still had a certificate from when I got my driver's liscense years before.  Even needed it for some schools I at which I was interviewed, so it was worth the investment, and got some use I didn't anticipate out of it.

Hmm. 50 thread views, no takers.

The card is now unavailable.  I suppose I'll simply use the card myself and E-bay what merchendaise it yields.

Happy gaming to all.
451  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / I need to part with a gift card from f.y.e. media store on: January 01, 2005, 04:40:24 PM
There are so many things I would like to grab at f.y.e. or fye.com with this $55 USD gift card, but I would like none of them as much as I would like to pay half of my electric bill.

I don't have feedback here, but I do have a modest but 100% positive Ebay Feedback (UserID: andyredbeard)  The only transaction I've ever done through Gone Gold was I once sold a used scanner to Zekester, if you want someone to ask about my reputation.

To make it attractive, I'll take $50 USD for the card.  Email me or YIM me and I'll give you my Paypal address.  Nothing against the PMs on this site, but I'd rather use my email or YIM.

I have never mailed anything internationally, so if you are not in the US, you'll have to teach me about the costs and proceedure.  I'll gladly pay all costs to ship within the US.  However,  internationally I'll have to see what the costs to ship are before I commit to the same, but I likely will pick up the tab anyways.

I'll have to do this first come, first serve.  Thanks for your help.

I suspected that was the situation Chaz.

You saw my list up above there, though, and there is no way I'm adding credit debt of any sort beyond my mortgage to that pile.  I know that's not the way folks do things these days, but it's how I have to do it. If you don't have it you can't spend it.
454  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Who else is feeling Jolly? on: December 24, 2004, 04:06:59 AM
I know that's the right way to approach it Chaz, and giving the wife a gift is a joy, don't get me wrong.  Heck, On our list of 25 there are less than 30% of people who I find to be Bozos and don't mind giving them gifts.

However, reason is giving way to homicidal jealousy and I'm finding it hard to wish you well slywink  I can't afford gum next month, let alone some cheapo PC parts, and you're telling me about the $1K you're going to drop on yourself come January? slywink

Thanks.. I feel uhm... great now?
455  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Who else is feeling Jolly? on: December 24, 2004, 03:45:59 AM
That's the cute part.

Since I'm married, the gifts I get are usually for the both of us -- I mean are for her.  Usually we haul in about 6 boxes of nonreturnables, like chocolates, and we couldn't possibly return the knick knacks for which we have no more room.  It would insult everyone else if we don't keep them.

Nope, It's better that I put my wantlist off, I pay for the gifts WE give, and SHE recieves the gifts for us.

At least if I don't want to sleep on the couch, it is better.

Most months she covers the utility bills, and I cover the food, morgtage, car and home insurance, my folks' health bills, and apparently the gifts...so that all evens out somewhere, right?

Right?

Happy Holidays.

It's not too late, thanks for the suggestions.

I didn't like the look of the Sonata case, I know I'm in a minority opinion on that.  The case I selected was the only part of this PC I looked at for asthetics over function.

Otherwise, it's good to know the other components are superfulous and excludable.

I'll give the vid cards a better look over when I get closer to purchase time.  I'm still looking at doing something after the holidays, rather than before.

Sorry that I missed your post there, E.

My WinXPPro It is not OEM from Dell.  The Dell when I acquired it came sans Hard drive, so I got the OEM CD from Newegg when I purchased the WD harddrive.
461  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / PC Custom Build sites help. Need more flexibility! on: November 19, 2004, 08:06:09 PM
For a better idea of what i'm aiming at, I have:

19" Dell Trinitron flatscreen CRT VGA
HP All in one inkjet psc 1210 on USB
Logitec z-640 5.1 speakers
MS Optical Mouse blue Ps/2
MS Natural Pro Keyboard Ps/2
WinXP Pro SP1 OEM CD
Win XP Pro SP2 update CD
Western Digital 80GB 8MB Cache 7200RPM 100 ATA
US.Robotics PCI 56K Modem

Rumbling around Newegg, I see myself shooting for:

ANTEC Performance Plus Case with 430W Power Supply, Model "PLUS1080AMG" –RETAIL $114.00

NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive, Beige, Model ND-3500A, OEM with software $67.00

Lite-On 16X DVD-ROM, Model SOHD-167T White, OEM $23.50

2 -AUDIO 24" 4-pin Connector Cable  $1.98

Link Depot 18" FLOOPY UV CABLE 2 CONNECTOR BLUE, Model UV-FLP18-BU –RETAIL $1.99

Link Depot 24" ATA133 UV CABLE 3 CONNECTOR RED, Model UV-ATA24-RD-3 –RETAIL $3.49

KINGWIN Silver Front Case Panel Multifunction Fan Controller, Model "TC-02S" –RETAIL $23.99

5 - Vantec "Stealth" 80mm Case fan, Model "SF8025L"  $34.95

ASUS "K8N" NVIDIA nForce3 Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 754 CPU –RETAIL $84.00

AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 512KB L2 Cache 64-bit Processor – Retail $149.00

Corsair Value Select (Dual Pack) 184 Pin 512MBx2 DDR PC-3200 – OEM $156.00

SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9600XT Video Card, 128MB DDR, 128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "ATLANTIS RADEON 9600XT" OEM Lite Box $135.00

with the shipping, today that's a cost of about  $ 850

So if I go for a mass builder or a custom build, at about the same price, I'll get stuff I don't need, more HD space, and what I don't think is that good of a PC for the price, especially for the video cards or integrated video chips in the off the retail shelf models.

Even if I went a little more nuts on the video card, I saw the Nvidia 6600 GT was $100 more and reasonable, and to go nuts for a card a custom build, it jacks the price ~ $300

I dunno what this does to my thinking.  I was just letting the people in on my reasoning.  I guess Newegg will be the way I go.  Suppose I was wishing for choices that are not out there at a similar cost.

hey Zeke, thanks for the suggestion, but HP and I will not be doing business.

Once had an HP Pavillion that crapped the bed every time I upgraded a component.  tons of heat shutdowns before I realize the culprit of poor ventialtion.
463  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / PC Custom Build sites help. Need more flexibility! on: November 18, 2004, 01:28:49 AM
Thanks for the suggestions.  Very close to what I want.  I don't think I'm going to get closer, either.

I suppose it will be tough for me to get what I am looking for equipment-wise and cost-wise without going the Newegg route.   Kinda disappointed that I'm not saving much over the mass production lines and the custom builders.  They tell you your time is worth something, but apparently it's not worth savings, it is merely worth exerting control over the goods one will purchase.

I had overlooked a barebones approach, but I'm still going to need to utilize Newegg for optical drives and the like in such a case, and in such an instance I feel that if I'm in for a penny, I might as well go in for the pound.

There's just no good shortcuts out there.

Those $500 e-machines' specs may look vile to my eyes, but they look really good to my calander and wallet.  We'll see what shakes out.

Thanks again.
464  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / PC Custom Build sites help. Need more flexibility! on: November 16, 2004, 05:27:36 PM
Heya folks.
I've been running about sites like  NewEgg.com, Dell.com, and IBuyPower.com, when I am looking for something in between the these vendors.

I want to keep:

19" Dell Trinitron flatscreen CRT VGA
HP All in one inkjet psc 1210 on USB
Logitec z-640 5.1 speakers
MS Optical Mouse blue Ps/2
MS Natural Pro Keyboard Ps/2
WinXP Pro SP1 OEM CD
Win XP Pro SP2 update CD
Western Digital 80GB 8 MB Cache 7200 100 ATA
US.Robotics PCI 56K Modem

this is all now in a Dell 800 MHz Pentium 3, 128 MB pc600 RDRAM, SB Live Value PCI, GeForce2GTS AGP junky old Rig with a broken LG DVD Rom and a 12 speed Yamaha CDRW with no burning software.

It's not so bad for a free PC. I salvaged it from an aquaintence almost two years ago.

Buying a new Dell or Compaq/HP/E-machine just seems so wasteful to me.  It is cheaper than IBuyPower's offerings, but I have to take so much equipment I don't want nor need.

Upgrading and reparing this pig will be more than the cost of a new PC for the RDRam, two optical drives, and the graphics card alone, thus upgrading is not an option I like.

So you would think a self-build is right for me, but to get near the level of equipment that i would get in a Dell, I'm looking at a parts cost at Newegg.com near the same as a similarlly equiped Dell.  Spending my time system building when I don't need to seems unwise to get the same PC.

So I try to do custom builds at Ibuypower and Alienware and Monarch systems and such, but every place wants to do the build with a Harddrive and an OS, which I don't need, and which adds 200 uncecessary dollars to the total that is already close to Newegg's cost.  That's a videocard I could have instead, you see.

Is there a site that will give me the time savings of not building, and let me keep all of the above parts rather than forcing me to purchase parts I don't want nor need?

Thanks in advance. No rush on this, as I am still in a window shopping phase of my finances on this purchase.  I hope that I'm not out chasing a recipie for toasted snow in this search!
