This has nothing to do with belittling anyones religion and everything to do about not being tolerant of bigotry and hate.  Robertson happened to cloak his bigotry in in the Bible, hence why its even brought into play.

The reason there's so much confusion here is because his bigotry is mirrored by bigotry in the Bible.  I don't think there's any denying that the Bible is a bigoted, homophobic book in its own right.  So, when attacking his bigotry, he can claim that the Bible is being attacked, despite the fact that his elaborations are even worse than what the Bible said.

Both Phil AND the Bible should be getting condemned by society here, not just one or the other.

Are you going to condemn the Quran and Muhammad while you are at it?

And straw men! Let's condemn straw men as well!

So the Bible is a bigoted homophobic book but the Quran is not?

It is only a strawman if they are not the same on this point. I think you will find they are identical in their feelings on homosexuality. To call one bigoted and homophobic and not the other is disingenuous.

Islam goes beyond mere disapproval of homosexuality.  Sharia teaches that homosexuality is a vile form of fornication, punishable by death.

So your argument is that anytime someone condemns one bigoted homophobic book it only counts if you condemn them all?

And they need it right in the system too. While getting ready for work this morning, Hark and I discovered that double-tapping the X logo will toggle focus between app and snapped app.

As I said in the comments of that post: If you have to go to great lengths to educate people how to use your interface, you have failed your users. PERIOD.

Flexibility doesn't always equal simple.

The simple tasks are there, and they are accessible without even a button push.

My point is that the first thing this box should do when it fires up is have simple lessons on moving around and how shit works. Perhaps a "I'm new to Xbox" vs "I had a 360. How do things work different?" as the first two options.

That alone clears up a whole bunch of UI issues (for the more hardcore gamers who are going to want to have shortcuts other than -1-put game in -2-play game -3-switch to watch TV).

No, see you're missing a key word: intuitive. If the UI designed doesn't bubble up key functionality that differentiates your product from everything else, it doesn't matter if it's there or not or how many videos or tutorials you post- that functionality will not get used by the majority of your users. Microsoft's UI design across the board has been more misses than hits, and they have demonstrated a definite lack of user-centric design over the years. Metro was the one admirable design they made- when it was for phones and touch screens. This madness of trying to shoehorn it in to every product they make now is a textbook example of what not to do.

Last night I was trying to show it off to some friends and pretty much none of the special things like voice activation or snapping/unsnapping was working well.

Voice recognition with a bunch of other people in the room/background noise is an exercise in futility. I had the same experience at Thanksgiving, and with multiple people milling around (even when they were attempting to be quiet), it just got confused. It's even worse if you have people screaming "Xbox watch porn!!!" at it constantly. When I play in the evenings after the kids are in bed, voice recognition is nearly 100%.

And this is exactly when I can't be using voice commands.

This is also why voice commands are a non-starter for me as well. I have three kids, there is ALWAYS somebody talking in the living room. I've pretty much given up on movies with the whole family at this point.

Oh, sorry, I meant that this thread is for Gaming Trend giveaways- we are actually giving this stuff away ourselves. If you want to post your own giveaways or giveaways on other sites, you should post in the steals and deals or trading forum as you were instructed last time.

My main issue with parallel sticks is that your thumbs can hit if you're looking left while moving right.

They are wider apart from each other on the DS4. Not really an issue now. (Yeah, I had the same problem with the DS3)

I will say the controller was AWESOME. Like the 360 but the sticks feel way better. Why oh why can't Sony give up the horrifically bad Dualshock design?! I am still yet to see a playable demo for either system anywhere, so I still haven't had a chance to hold the DS4.

If you had, you would know that they DID give up on the horrifically bad Dualshock design. The PS4 controller is excellent.

They still have the left stick in the position that is not my personal preference so I remain skeptical, but I would like to pick one up and feel it for myself.
Fixed that for you. Essentially, the controller difference is down to personal preference now.

Nah not really.   The Bone controller wipes the floor with even the improved DS4.    I could play the hell out of some Knack with the Bone controller.

the Bone's dainty little thumbsticks kill that controller for me. Cramp city.

Sigh... yes, of course this is all in my opinion. I didn't really think that needed to be spelled out, but thanks. smile (added a smiley to make it clear I am just clowning around)

For the record the first gamepad I ever owned with an analog stick was a Dualshock 1, so it isn't like I had some MS/Nintendo preference before using a Sony controller. I just don't like having the main movement stick in the lower position since it feels so unnatural. Likewise, while I haven't yet held it, the new Wii U classic controller which has the right stick up where the buttons should be seems equally non-intuitive. In my oh so humble opinion of course. slywink

Trust me, I HATED Playstation controllers before this. I was extremely skeptical. Never thought I'd say I would like a Playstation controller as much as I like the DS4. It just feels really good in my hands. Not having offset sticks doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would, either. After a significant amount of time with both new controllers I was shocked to realize that I much preferred the DS4.

I also find it odd that (not necessarily on this forum, but on the internets in general) fans of xbox have gone from "yeah I have a PS3-i mean Netflix machine-but it's all about the games man. GAMES GAMES GAMES! If I want to watch a movie I'll turn on my PS3" to "It's all about the media capabilities man. All the PS4 can do is play games. It's basically a PS 3.5."
The reversal of opinion is intriguing.

Ironic considering the PS3 turned out to be the better console last generation primarily because of the way it pushed the boundaries of media with Bluray.

Yet it cost several Sony execs their jobs, including Kutaragi, and took them 6 years to pull out of the financial and PR tailspin the platform put them in. Meanwhile, the Wii and 360 at it's lunch for much of the cycle.

Bottom line is, speaking from someone that has a PS4 and have been playing it all week, Xbone is pushing the envelope.   PS4 is essentially PS3 2.0.

 saywhat

Yeah I did the same thing. This seems to be the standard Xbone defense these days.  saywhat

No.  It's truth.   The PS4 is a more powerful version of their last console.  It pushes no envelopes.  It's customization features are stripped out.  It essentially says 'ok we screwed up on the quirky proprietary stuff last time, so we are taking zero chances and going with standard tech for dev fast pure gaming machine.    Microsoft goes first on their announcement, and Sony immediately leaves all their push features at the alter to rot by cutting their voice/video integration in favor of a $100 undercut of Microsoft's price.

Right now, I can go to my PS3 and customize it more than I can my PS4.   I can also yell at it all day long, but unless I go to the store and buy something extra it's not going to respond to me.

And the Xbone requires no defense.   Look at the reviews:   The Bone is scoring equal or even a notch higher on every review I've read.

Compare the controllers: the DS4 is where they are pushing, even if just by a little bit, with integrated touchpad controls and built-in speaker and mic support. These are features that make more sense when it comes to games and some launch titles are already using it. Based on my time with the Xbone controller I'd say it's stayed still in terms of design, if not regressed due to the dainty thumbsticks and odd shoulder buttons. It does nothing new compared to the 360 controller.

Customization? You mean the UI? You're dissing the system because you can't use your own wallpaper? I'm sure we'll see considerable UI customization on both systems as the years go by. Not sure why this is such a big deal to you.

Voice commands? Virtually useless in many households due to the preponderance of families who consistently speak over each other. How many people REALLY use Siri? I'll be surprised if this is anything other than a novelty, especially due to how difficult it is to map to the myriad of speech patterns and vocal inflections in the world. I think the player recognition and automatic profile login is a much more compelling forward thinking feature by far.

As for the reviews of the consoles? I honestly think reviewing a console at launch is worthless. By no means is there anything available right now that expresses the potential of either of these systems.

You could start a separate FB account for just your gaming persona.

Or just create a group for you videogaming FB friends and post to that

Can you do that? I thought it just posts to your feed.

I need to check, but I know FB pretty much requires that anything that posts for you can be scaled to a single friend or a pre-identified group. If you can't do it via PS4, you might be able to do it via the app settings on FB (which would likely be better anyway)

I don't get why, when they have a system in place today to handle this on 360, they are waiting until the end of next year to announce the details on the XBO version of this.

Could be the library of XB1 games isn't large enough to start the program until then.  Sony getting in with the independent developers probably gives them a good head start.

Well here's the deal before PS4 fans slit their wrists and Xbox fans start popping the champagne.

All the ultimately says is:

1. Reviewers who hyped better visuals on the PS4 due to resolution differences were full of shit.
2. There is some weirdness going on since it appears the PS4 is having framerate issues that the Xbone doesn't, and now they don't have 1080p to blame for it.

This means that reviewers who could not tell a difference were correct - but this also means the disparity may in fact be *larger* than first thought.

End of the day it doesn't change the fact PS4 runs at a higher resolution and probably looks a little better in side by sides. It does give some journalists (and a lot of armchair quarterback internet posters) a healthy serving of crow. The real test will be how it runs framerate wise post 1080p patch.

So as a reviewer of COD Ghosts who went to the review event and played on both One and PS4, I'd like to note one thing- this day one patch is for the retail version of the game- the physical disk. I did not see a physical disk in the unit I was playing on and it is entirely possible that the version I played on was a version post-gold master. I'm not trying to defend anyone, just pointing out that the assumptions being made about what reviewers saw up to this point are based off of incomplete data. I'd say it's very likely that what we saw included the patch for the commercial disk.

That said, I had no real way to test actual resolution or framerate on any of the platforms. All I have is the anecdotal evidence I saw when I looked at them individually- the PS4 version looked a little better to me. I should also note that this was when the situation was first coming to light.

I'll definitely use the snap feature. When PC gaming I'm usually also watching a TV show or movie. I'd love the ability to Skype with my buddies while gaming. Doubt I'll ever use the internet lookup, but hey, it's there if I ever want to. The biggest use will be keeping an eye on basketball and football games while playing. That's huge for me with college basketball season coming up.

I don't like saying "I don't want extra features because I'll never use them." That's never turned out to be true for me when it comes to consumer electronics.

While I think the snap feature is one I'd actually use, and actually love the idea of being able to check on other stuff while I'm gaming that would otherwise cause a more drastic interrupt, I can't agree with your last statement- built-in internet features on so-called 'smart' TVs that became impossible to avoid as of a few years ago are horrible compared to other solutions such as an Apple TV. I didn't want it, couldn't find a TV worth a shit without it, never use it.

will it make me a complete hypocrite if I pick up a PS Camera? biggrin  I don't think the current integration is much benefit but I feel a bit caught up in the hype-mobile.

Shamefully, I'm considering it too. Tongue I'm trying to resist, however.

It was never enabled, and we aren't going to enable it.

actually it was.  playful mayhem ensued, then it got turned off.

That's right. I think my brain was trying to block that out. I remember a vague sense of unease...

It was never enabled, and we aren't going to enable it. Your brain has a built-in ignore feature. If people can't be civil in this tread, report them and they will be dealt with accordingly or the tread will be locked.

I'm not going to get into the specifics of why we aren't going to enable the feature, suffice to say that the reasons against it were more than compelling. We got through elections without this feature we can get through these console launches.

SMF has a built-in ignore function, right?  We just have it disabled?  Is there any way to have mods manually force certain people to have each other on ignore?

We don't have it enabled because we all decided it was a stupid feature that could result in a broken experience at times. The idea was that our forum-goers are mature enough to self-regulate for the most part and hopefully knew when to chill the fuck out. If you gotta ignore someone or be ignored, you need to step away from your keyboard.

Remote play looks incredible!!

It really makes the Vita a portable PS4.

Portable is debatable. I don't consider it that portable with the portability is the range of my home network.

Add Vita TV to the mix and you can take it over the internet

Wait wait... what? Potential game changer for me.

Remote play works over the internet. That has been known for awhile. Combine that with the Vita TV and you can bring your PS4 virtually to any TV.

But it only works over wifi out of the box. Over the internet the Vita TV is required

Not according to what we've been told recently.

I must have missed that, then
