2601  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What was the first Console game you ever played? on: October 10, 2005, 07:33:21 PM
ditto on Pong, here.  But I only played it once  smirk

After that it was Combat for Atari (or whatever that first pack-in for the 2600 was)

I actually put the thread title in the subject line of the email version biggrin

Hell, I wish I had had me as a dad!  I even help my family find all the obscure stuff he puts on his birthday and christmas lists for them.  Do you know how hard it is to find Japanese import Godzilla and giant robot toys outside of the internet?

Luckily, there is a comic/ sci-fi convention near us this weekend.  I've been given money by three relatives for shopping purposes  unibrow

Thanks guys!  This has been a tradition of mine for about 5 years now (and yes, this is his 7th birthday) and it's one of the things I look forward to most.  I'll see if I can dig up some of the other ones to show you (like last year's Godzilla one).

I'm going to start doing my daughter's invitations on her next birthday (I started at 3 with Griffin, and Oriana is going to be 3 in March).

As for the party, we are renting a moonwalk for the entire day.  biggrin

Every year I design a special invitation for my son's birthday party.  I thought I'd share this year's design with you guys:

It was a bit of a rush job, honestly.  I don't think I could top last year's where I had him going toe to toe with Godzilla.... biggrin

2607  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Marvel Nemesis - What's the word? on: October 05, 2005, 05:11:22 PM
I wasn't too impressed with the oxm demo.  controls seemed a bit wonky for my tastes and overall seemed a bit gratuitous.  The characters made up for the game are just plain goofy, too.  Why make up a bunch of new characters when you are dealing with Marvel anyway?  Why make an Electro rip-off if you have to use a stupid-ass name like Johnny Ohm?

Cranky tonight Mike? Tongue

After Halo I'm getting pretty wary of Marathon/Doom/System Shock/other sci-fi shooter from the past wanna-bes.

Seriously sci-fi shooters have pretty much been around since the FPS was invented right?

Well, yeah,  That's kind of why I'm a little burned out on them.

Between Doom 3 which was a collosal waste of my time and money, and the last one I played, which was - you guessed it - Pariah, I just can't get myself excited about this.  Mind you I loved Jade Empire and I loved KOTOR, and I'm sure BioWare will do this right, but looking at the 360 line-up for the next several months, there is definitely a skew towards Sci-Fi as far as first-person games go.  Hopefully they'll bend the genre a bit and take it off in a new generation, we will see.  I'd prefer a more fantasy environment from BioWare, personally, even if they mix it up a bit and do something like, say, steampunk.

I think I'm mostly just turned off by the human characters in those screenshots.  blech.  Maybe I wanted a Jade Empire sequel, which took me back to the days of Oriental Adventures for D&D.  I dunno, we'll see.

Groan.  Gee-gosh golly, another scifi based shooter game.  After Pariah, I am getting pretty wary of Halo wanna-bes.  Yeah, I know, it's Bioware, but seriously, with Gears of War, UT2K7, and eventually Halo 3, how many sci-fi shooter variants can you play over the course of a year or two.  And I'm just mentioning the ones off the top of my head.

The characters look a little mannequin-like (the human ones at least), though I like the non-humans and the environments.  I dunno, this just looks like more of the 'same-shit, better graphics' rut that has been going on for years.  Hell, it's still early, I hope I'm wrong.  I was just hoping for something a little more fresh than this.

If I recall it was about on par with Wing Commander (the movie) except the annoyingly bad actors were less well known.

IMO, the Democrats in Congress should have been fighting Bush tooth and nail since day one, and in fact I might not vote for Obama because of his lay-down attitude thus far.

And shame on the Republicans, especially John McCain, for just rubber-stamping all the crap flowing from the White House.

If EVERYONE in Congress, with very few exceptions, gets voted out in the next six years, the country will be very better for it.  My measure of who should stay is basically looking at who stood up to Bush.  McCain would have been on that list before the 2004 election.

And lo, hell hath frozen over- Unbreakable and I agree on something (for the most part)

I just want to see some third party candidates who aren't kooks, tree-huggers, or wanna-bes.  Yeah, I'll keep dreaming....
2615  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / FEMA Chief Michael Brown Removed From Katrina Relief on: September 14, 2005, 09:24:04 PM
Look, I'm not saying Bush didn't fuck up, he most certainly did,  but when this idiot was appointed, democrats and republicans both let him in.  That means, on the whole our GOVERNMENT fucked up.  there was no opposition whatsover, and don't tell me the democrats couldn't have at least voiced some kind of objection.   Nobody is doing their job worth a damn in Washington and I'm sick of both fucking parties.  I pray for the day a viable third party comes along and leverages the utter distaste that I and others have for our idiotic two-party system against these fucking thieves.

Just so we are clear- my disgust extends to both republican AND democrat, and any time anybody claims that one or the other is the fucking boogyman I feel they are missing the whole point- THEY BOTH SUCK.  And I'm sick of it.

So why is the head of FEMA given less concern, a guy who's background couldn't even pass basic scrutiny?

Congress did have to approve his appointment, you know.  There wasn't any interference at all, if I recall, from either side of the fence.

And of course, now reports are coming out that New Orleans was BEGGING for funding to maintain and expand the levies, and funds which had previously been allocated were diverted to fund the war in Iranq.

So, because Bush wanted to plunder funding for a very necessary domestic project, now an ENTIRE U.S. CITY is lost.  LOST.  New Orleans will never, ever be the same, thousands of people are dead, more will die, and all because of a horribly incompetent president.  But this is a broken record, because it's just a rerun of his 'planning' for Iranq (back when it was still Iraq, of course).

He is saying NOBODY predicted the levies breaking?  Is he insane, or just plain stupid?

Don't lay the blame of this squarely on the war in Iraq and George Bush:

Seriously, we are taking a sytemic failure of leadership for several DECADES, both on a federal level and a local level.

Still, Bush told ABC-TV: "I'm not expecting much from foreign nations because we hadn't asked for it. I do expect a lot of sympathy and perhaps some will send cash dollars. But this country's going to rise up and take care of it.''

"You know,'' he said, "we would love help, but we're going to take care of our own business as well, and there's no doubt in my mind we'll succeed. And there's no doubt in my mind, as I sit here talking to you, that New Orleans is going to rise up again as a great city.''

Yep, more cowboy grandstanding.  What an asshole.

Free or cheap oil will, of course, never be refused, however, because it isnt actually going to be used to help anyone.  Maybe the oil companies will lower their prices a few cents a gallon because of it, however.

I'm surprised he isnt looking into ways to charge the people from New Orleans rent, or hotel fees, or something.

Cowboy grandstanding?  Is he lying?  His statement pretty much jibes with what AA said about things.  In fact, your statement is much more asshole-ish than what Bush said.  Try to look past your hatred for a minute, willya?

Honestly, any aid offered is a political gesture for the most part, but as they say, it is the thought that counts.  I knew that other countries would offer their condolences and support, it's just that the major media outlets aren't focusing on that sort of thing right now.  Personally, I wish the media teams would at least move in with all the supplies they can carry with them so that they can do more than just talk to people about how horrible the situation is.  Of course, some of them may be doing that we just don't know.

I AM NOT A REPUBLICAN, neocon, or any of the other names you see fit to call me.  I am fully capable of having an opinion about something without proclaiming allegiance to one political party or another.

Of course you will continue making one bullshit assumption after another about me and anybody else who doesn't agree with you, so carry on!
2623  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Deficits Don't Matter (yeah, right) [P] on: August 30, 2005, 06:56:09 PM
As clear as mud.

1.  You erroneously think that A.  The president is solely responsible for how money is spent and B. that spending/ surplus, etc. trends are defined by presidential administrations.  Sure, they have some influence, but largely it's a runaway train that has been far more influenced by things like the tech bubble, 9/11 and other econimic events.   Saying that the surplus occured because of Clinton's actions doesn't factor in the far more relevant situation of the tech boom and subsequent burst as he was leaving office.

2.  The government has been spending and wasting tax dollars for longer than any of have been alive.  Unless the whole system is changed, there is very little effect that we the people can have on it.  I haven't seen an administration in my lifetime that anybody could consider fiscally responsible.  That 'surplus' that you speak of was a bullshit byproduct of the tech boom that as we all know now was infated bullshit that caused more harm than good.  Perhaps if that surplus were used to prepare for the fallout from the bubble rather than pump up Clinton's popularity, we might've been in better shape.

Am i the only one who still buys VHS tapes , instead of DVD's?

Mostly because of the price on DVD's. I can get the whole die hard collection on VHS as a pack at the mall for 12.99, but on DVD its 22 bucks. The extra's too me , is a waste of time. The extra's on rush hour 2 was good, but too short and they showed the same thing in the movies.

I have a couple DVD's like Smallville 1 , 2 and i plan on picking up 3 & 4. But most of the time i just pick up VHS tapes.

Coming soon- The General's monumental plan to revive the VHS, betamax and 8-track tape formats.

Sorry, cheap shot. unibrow

Seriously, picture quality, requiring less shelf space, and the ability to go to anywhere on the disc at a whim (not to mention not having to rewind)  killed VHS for me.  I haven't even looked back.

No I wouldn't.  I don't own a dreamcast. and don't plan to.  You would have much better luck with PC- try online distribution and you can cut a LOT of overhead and not worry about shelf space.
2636  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Ways to end Piracy on: August 16, 2005, 05:50:18 PM
The only way you could possibly make this work is if you came out with a portable Dreamcast.  Not. Going. To. Happen.

Seriously, the fanboy-ism is cute, but don't think for a minute that you are going to make any kind of money off of a system that is no longer supported or even relevant.

If you get bad service, my rule of thumb is to not  leave nothing, but leave a very small tip, otherwise the waiter thinks you just forgot.

After having been a waiter for many years I reward good service with 20%+, but  I ABHOR bad service, and want to make sure the server KNOWS I thought it was deplorable.
