2484  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 in Japan: The Kancho of MS Continues on: December 26, 2005, 11:55:32 PM
I just don't understand how everybody can consider it a failure after only two weeks of sales numbers.

There is certainly going to be a jump in sales with the release of DOA, and the time to watch is going to be when these japanese RPGs start coming out.

Quote
Japan is a big deal to MS this round- they've made it abundantly clear not only in talk (ie PR) but in action- allocating 150k of their rather precious initial shipment, funding more Japanese tailored games, etc.

Allocating 150k to Japan was definitely more of a PR move than anything.  They want the Japanese to know they are serious about that market, and giving them a sizable launch allocation is part of that.  Yeah, it sucks for those of us in the US who can't get one, but that's how it played out.
2485  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 in Japan: The Kancho of MS Continues on: December 26, 2005, 06:28:11 PM
Quote from: "Kevin Grey"

Expecting might be too strong of a word, but fast adoption was certainly the lynchpin to MS's strategy over there- they want to gain some kind of critical mass there before the PS3 launch (which will likely be much sooner in Japan than the US).  MS wouldn't have included Japan in the initial launch if they didn't think it was critical to their success there.

Everyone else can downplay the importance of Japan, but MS themseleves have made it publicly clear that it is important to them that they do significantly better in that territory this time out.

I don't think you understand.  Microsoft included Japan in the initial launch, made a big deal about it there, etc, for srictly PR purposes.  There is no way they expected them to eat it up like candy right out of the gate.  Hell, it took the first xbox several months to pick up any steam here in the US.

All the 360 needs in Japan is 1 or 2 games that are absolute must-haves.   System-sellers.   We'll see if that happens.
2486  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 in Japan: The Kancho of MS Continues on: December 26, 2005, 05:08:32 AM
Oh Nos!  The Xbox360 hasn't even been out a month in japan and it's selling horribly!  It's DOOMED!!!!!!

Excuse me, but was anybody (including MS) really expecting a fast adoption of this console over there?  If it succeeds at all, it will be a very slow burn as Japanese devs start coming out with their offerings.  It will be a year or more before any measure of success or failure will mean shit.

But hey, please, carry on with the hand-wringing....
2487  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / IGE Banner Ad on: December 18, 2005, 06:07:48 AM
Ok, uh, wow (no pun intended).

I can't speak for Ron, but I'm willing to bet he's kind of defensive about the ad because, as a gamer, he probably agrees with a lot of the negative feedback regarding what said company does.  Hell, none of us on staff really like it, but sometimes you have to deal with some shady fucks to get by, god knows I have personally.

The truth of it is, all of us are here for you, our readers, and it pains us when we have to take measures like this to keep on keeping on, and it certainly stings when we in essence agree with what you are saying but have to do it anyway.

Additionally, we appreciate your feedback and support greatly, and those of you who have donated via the paypal link in the past, thank you again.  I know not everyone can contribute like that, but don't think we think any less of you for it- we are here for all of you.  We are constantly looking for new ways to increase revenue for the site to not only keep it running but make it better for all of us, and will continue to do so.

Now, if anyone might have any good leads for advertising that we can add to the rotation and eventually replace this ad, please contact me or Ron, our emails are readily available.

Thanks again,

So, I waited and waited for my December issue of OXM to arrive, but it never did.  Yesterday, I revieved January's ish, which pretty much confirms the no-show.  Any idea on who I can contact to rectify this situation?  I'm not keen on paying for a subscription if I'm not getting the issues.

Oh, and my account is paid in full, has been for months, so it isn't that.

msduncan, I recommend you try some GameCrazy's if you have Hollywood video anywhere nearby. I was talking to the clerk at my local GC, and he was remarking on how well treated they were in regards to stocking of the 360s in comparison to EB and Gamestop. They were expecting some this week for sure.

Ugh.  That second article was ridiculous.

Eurogamer: Would you say Sony missed the boat with online gaming in this generation, given the relative success of Live compared to PS2 Online? Is that a balance you're hoping to redress in the next generation?

Phil Harrison: I've always been very admiring of some of the things Microsoft has managed to do with their branding and some of the consumer elements of their service, but it's always important to remember that more people play online games through PlayStation 2 than any other consoles. On a worldwide basis it is the most popular online console by virtue of the size of the installed base.

My ass, it is.  How the fuck would they know any solid info on that without a centralized network like Live, anyway.

And how many online capable games does the PS2 have?  Surely not as much as Xbox.  pure bullshit.

I was shocked at how boring Curb Your Enthusiasim was this season.  I think the steam has run out.

And sorry, but Steve Carrell's version of Ricky Gervais was way too clownish and overdone.  The supporting cast of The Office ran circles around him imho.

Hmnnnn....  Animal Crossing is probably fairly text intensive as well, and while he has gotten better at reading and I want to encourage him, I think a second game that doesn't require so much reading would be a better counterpoint.

That said, Kirby or Sonic Dash?

I just opened it up to, uh, test for dead pixels (yeah, that's it).  Thankfully, it is pristine.  I did program it with his name, birthday, etc., however.  Also programmed a welcome message (I think that's what it was) that says "Merry Xmas Griffin, from Santa" biggrin

He's 7.  We may only have one or two more Christmas' that he'll still believe in Santa (and at least one more where he'll probably fake us out so he'll get more presents slywink)  Santa has to bring the good stuff!  biggrin:D

Mind you, this was #2 on his list.  His Grandparents already got him #1: Roboraptor.

Naturally, -I- can't wait to play with both  unibrow
2510  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Santa is getting my 7 yr-old a DS- Need recommendations on: December 11, 2005, 03:58:58 AM
Well, I picked up a DS today at Target for 99 bucks (see the other thread about the Target Catalogue printing snafu   ).  They only had silver (wnated to get him blue, oh well Tongue).  I have 40 bucks in trade-in at gamestop and the wife and I decided to take back a couple of Kong action figures that we had just settled for the other day in favor of getting a second game.

Apparently he is really keen on Mario and Luigi and Animal Crossing, so those look like the winners, unless someone can compel me otherwise....

2512  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Santa is getting my 7 yr-old a DS- Need recommendations on: December 09, 2005, 05:37:37 PM
So the fates have converged and we just came into enough money for Santa to get my 7 yr old son a proper gift this Christmas.  I plan on picking up 2 games for him using store credit at gamestop and I need some recommendations.

I am almost certainly picking up Animal Crossing (he loved the first one even when he couldn't read- now he can) but I need a second recommendation.  My thoughts are leaning towards Sonic dash or Mario & Luigi, but I want to make sure he can play it fine.  Will probably pick up Mario Kart DS at a later date as he's never been too keen on racing games (but I am, heheh).  Also plan to hold off on Nintendogs as Animal Crossing is already quite sim-ish.
2513  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The Revolution has begun...(IGN chan, specs, launch date?) on: December 08, 2005, 06:53:58 AM
One point that I haven't seen mentioned yet, which I think is the biggest feather in Nintendo's cap in regards to the Revolution:

Developers are getting downright EXCITED about it and the potential that the new controller represents.

That is HUGE.  Potentially paradigm shifting huge.

My stance on this new generation of systems is that Nintendo is the wild card.  I have a feeling that they will come out of the gate strong and solidly push the envelope with new experimental gameplay, third party games will be more interesting with not as many ports of the same old shit as the other two.  There will certainly be some misses, but the hits could very well redefine gaming for the years to come.

I also think that the fact that Microsoft and Nintendo are solidly pushing online distribution methods with their new systems is going to be what could eventually topple Sony's grip on the market.  We are already seeing some of the potential of the Live Marketplace, and we will see a lot more interesting 'budget' games that take advantage of this in the coming years.  Who says that all the Rev will offer online are their old games?  This is what could revitalize the gaming industry and take the focus away from the sink or swim blockbuster mess we are in right now.  Smaller developers will have a better opportunity to get their product to gamers than they have had in years (this should have happened on the PC a long time ago, actually).  The fact that Sony is turning their back on this concept for the PS3 is what is going to hurt them the most.

Oh, and my opinion of the PSP/DS thing?  I think it is a great little movie player, but 90% of the games I would rather play on my TV with all of the bells and whistles a full console lends.  I hope that changes and if it does I'll be buying one.  On the other hand, the DS has been surprising the shit out of me and devs have only just started to realize it's potential.  New forms of gameplay are popping up on it and my curiosity is piqued.  I plan to get one right after I am finally able to afford a 360, I want in on that action.
