Sure. The current president is purposely operating outside the law.

That was, I thought, the entire reason for Gore's speech. Which you claim to have read.

Wait.  So those abuses of power that the Clinton admin so graciously help put in place only work if an administration works inside the law?  That doesn't make ANY sense.
2482  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [RP] Unchecked Presidential Power on: January 20, 2006, 01:13:05 AM
By contrast, what were the huge scandals rocking Democratic administrations? Blow-job-gate?

you can't be serious, can you?  Don't you realize that the democrats are just better at covering things up than the republicans?  Half of their big 'boo-boos' come out after they are gone from office, usually, and as we all know, America's attention span doesn't extend that far.

What about Bill Clinton and Whitewater? Selling Military Technology to the Chinese? If you are going to bring up Enron (and you should), didn't Worldcom contribute heavily to the democratic party with some of their ill-gotten gain?  Of course, corporate scandal is corporate scandal, I don't attribute Enron's shadiness to Bush or his administration.  Besides, Bush is digging his own grave well enough without that being a mark against him.

The Bush administration is arrogant and sloppy, and they are getting caught at a lot of shit.  That doesn't mean that the Democrat's shit doesn't stink, however.

So, in a case which was no less important than our current situation, the Clinton administration worked within the law, and THEN addressed a point of potential abuse, creating MORE, rather than less, oversight of the executive branch.

So why the fuck are we in this position, huh?  Doesn't it concern you that their steps to correct that potential abuse turned out to be so ineffectual?
2484  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [RP] Unchecked Presidential Power on: January 20, 2006, 12:29:20 AM
The issue with the Bush administration is a PATTERN of avoiding any form of oversight. Hey, if you are down with that, admit that you believe the Consitution is an outdated goddamn piece of paper, and that the US needs an authoritarian police state to deal with "terrorists", who are killing far less Americans than, say, depressive suicides, or auto accidents, or heart disease.

We were fighting two wars, one against genocidal Nazis, and we werent forced to appoint a dictator to run the show. This war of choice in Iraq is far less a dire situation; so why, then, are more draconian measures REQUIRED to deal with it?

No, I am not down with that.  I just don't think putting a democrat in the office is going to change anything significantly.  Issues like this will be dressed up better, but they will still be going on.

Newt Gingrich, just like Al Gore, is a former Senator. Do you likewise roll your eyes and thing "oh God, here we go again" every time he is discussed in the news?

Yes.  I couldn't give two fucks about what he says either.  I deplore armchair quarterbacks of any kind.  Also, need I remind you: I AM NOT A REPUBLICAN.

So, let me ask you something, Mike. Did you read Al Gore's speech, and if so, what do you think about it?  (And you too, Poleaxe, even though I already know you will dismiss it outright).

Yes, I did, in fact.  While there are, of course, some well made points in it, they are so obfuscated by rabble-rousing, hypocrisy, and an over-inflated sense of self-importance that I found it hard to take the man seriously.  Do you think, for a moment, that the very administration he was a part of was not guilty of abuses of power, that, in fact, every administration for the last 40 years has been secretly keeping tabs on it's populace in the same manner?  Why do you think Bush was so nonchalant about it?  It's been a given for decades, the only thing his administration is truly guilty of is the arrogance of admitting it.

For someone who bowed out of the last presidental race, Al Gore sure does try a lot to remain relevant in today's politics.  And what is he doing?  Preaching to the converted?  What good does that do?  He holds no office, all he does is travel around every once in a while and tells his paying audience that the government should do what he thinks they should do.  I'm sure there are a bunch of representatives and senators sitting around saying "sure, Al, we'll take it into consideration... (rolleyes)"

He is irrelevant and an overblown windbag.  If he wants me to care about his opinion or what he thinks the govt. should do, he should get back in the fucking game.

Name calling?  Do you understand that I was calling your logic flawed and infantile and not you?  Can you even tell the difference?

Look, you can vote however you like, I respect your right to do that, I respect your motivations to do that, I am not attacking you because I disagree with how you decide to vote.  And by your own logic, a vote for democrat in my state was vote that was predestined to lose, so you in fact are saying that I should have voted for Bush as there was no doubt in anyone's mind that he would have carried the state of Texas.

And you are correct, I don't find the value of voting AGAINST someone, I'm not into settling for the asshole figurehead of the party that is only slightly less corrupt than the one currently in power.  When I vote it is a personal endorsement for the person, party, or issue that I agree with most, and there are a heaping ton of things that I disagree with in regards to both republicans and democrats.  I don't believe in just settling, or spitefully voting against someone.  I would sooner not vote, and frankly, that is a worse offense in my book.

Good day, sir. finger

Well, your opinion is that voting for a Democrat is worthless.  I happen to have a different opinion, and one which is backed up by measurable facts.

I don't subscribe to the belief that all opinions are sacrosanct, or that they are all equally valid.  Obviously, opinions which are supported by some kind of data are weighted much higher than idle speculation or good ol' faith.

Hey, it's a free country.  If you want to believe the earth is flat, go right ahead.  Just don't act surprised or indignant when other people aren't receptive to what you are preaching.  You have the right to your beliefs, but so does everyone else.

So, using your own flawed and infantile logic, any vote other than democrat is worthless, any vote that happens to run contrary to you is worthless.

I think you need to read your last paragraph in that post very carefully, my friend.

I'm not making assumptions.  But if your vote isnt changing anything, did you even vote?

Until there is a viable (by which I mean someone with a politically significant following) third-party candidate, IMO you have not.

And the clear evidence of vote manipulation during the 2000/2004 elections makes that situation all the worse.  If you allow one party to rig votes, than the other one has to cheat just to keep up.  That essentially squeezes out any potential third party candidate.

Oh, like my vote in Texas was going to have much of an effect anyway?  Was there any doubt which way the state would swing?  My vote had a much better chance adding to the number of vote which would enable better funds for a third party next election.

And I will vote how I damn well please, thank you.  If nobody ever votes for third party candidates then we will be stuck in this fucking shit forever.

The problem is that people tend to cite a few corrupt politicians waving the Democrat banner, and say "SEE SEE!!! THEY ALL DO IT!!!"

I'm not saying all politicians are corrupt, I'm syaing the republican and democrat parties are.

I don't believe power corrupts.  I believe corrupt people are drawn to power.  Therefore, the most important thing any organization can do is choose it's leaders, and not empower immoral people.  Our government doesn't do a great job of that, but it has, until recently, tended to do an adequate job of it.

I agree with you, if by 'until recently' you mean since the last 40 or so years.

The problem, from my perspective, is that you have a political party in which it's leadership is composed of criminals.  These people were criminals before they went into government; it's amazing how Republican voters seem to ignore the histories of who they vote for.

If you are going to adress the people posting in this thread that are republicans, don't make a blanket 'you' statement. It's not very polite.

But, as most recent polls show, 28% of Americans will eat from whatever toilet the GOP puts in front of them.

And what I am saying is that you are eating the same shit, just from a different toilet and with a gallon of perfume dumped on it.  Don't believe the hype.

I view that as a non-valid excuse to throw up your hands and give up.  But hey, that's your right, and you are welcome to it.

And one can demonstrably show that America has done far better, by a great many measurements, with Democratic leadership than under Republican leadershit.

Sorry, I haven't thrown up my hands and given up, I just refuse to prescribe to the bullshit dominance of the two-party system.  I vote third party every election in the hopes that someday it will make a difference.  Please stop making assumptions.

No no no, you misunderstand me.  The Republicans and Democrats have been playing 'good cop/bad cop' with us for decades- they are both in this for the goal of keeping themselves in power.  One side is not more altruistic than the other, they are both shady and corrupt as shit.  That's why third parties have been quashed or discredited for so long.  It's as plain as the nose on my face.

Anyone care to answer my question?  What is the line in the sand beyond which Bush's supporters start disagreeing with him?

Or is ridiculing "the enemy", by which I am refering to the (at least) 50% of Americans who back the Democrats, far more important?

I think I'll stick with my long-standing plan of ridiculing both "sides" of our idiotic and corrupt political system, thank you.

When are all of you going to realize that both "sides" are in cahoots?  Call me when a viable third party gains some momentum (which will be never thanks to the other two "sides").

I think this is some of the smartest, tightest writing for this show to date.  One of the things I really like about it so far is theat they seem to be taking some of the more tiresome tropes of the last few lackluster seasons and setting them up so you think it'll be more of the same, and then they turn it on it's ear and do something much cooler and unexpected. (examples:  crazy schizo woman as filler plot-line in past seasons becomes seemingly crazy  yet possibly even cunning woman who actually has a part in the plot this season, setting up Sean Astin as the sterotypical ass from the head office who comes in to muck everything up yet actually saves the day and makes logical decisions for one of his office, putting the mole in the president's camp instead of CTU, etc.)

I was damn impressed with the show so far, and I really wasn't expecting much.  I'm hooked worse than I was 1st season now.

Sure, it might be subliminal, but its still there. You do not want folks associating Michael Dunn with "not enough" now do you? slywink

For the main banner, I do not really care for the varying font sizes. I know you are trying to create some force behind the statement, but it just is not visually appealing to see it. A little too much empty space in the top portion of the banner.

I like the idea behind the "watermark" figure and the figure in the lense/bubble, but if there was a way to make the correlation more pronounced I think it would be better (perhaps you felt this way as well which is why that empty space is there I mentioned up above). I can barely even make out the little guy in the bubble, can not see his face at all.

Even though your banner statement gets the point across, I do not like seeing negatives used ("not enough"). I think something more positive would be more appropriate.

Yeah, not 100% on that banner.  Will probably change it up soon.  The statement is actually a quote from Buckaroo Banzai, though, and I'm awful fond of it.... unibrow

1) Could you possibly centered for those people using non-standard browser resolutions?

That's on my to-do list.  I went for the quick solution of absolute positioning for now because I need to get this up in a hurry.

2) On the front page, I don't like how the 2nd (lower) quote box blends with the bottom table.  It doesn't match the rest of the site, I think.

Just fixed that little problem.  I am assuming you are using Firefox?

I just don't understand how everybody can consider it a failure after only two weeks of sales numbers.

There is certainly going to be a jump in sales with the release of DOA, and the time to watch is going to be when these japanese RPGs start coming out.

Japan is a big deal to MS this round- they've made it abundantly clear not only in talk (ie PR) but in action- allocating 150k of their rather precious initial shipment, funding more Japanese tailored games, etc.

Allocating 150k to Japan was definitely more of a PR move than anything.  They want the Japanese to know they are serious about that market, and giving them a sizable launch allocation is part of that.  Yeah, it sucks for those of us in the US who can't get one, but that's how it played out.
2515  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 in Japan: The Kancho of MS Continues on: December 26, 2005, 06:28:11 PM
Quote from: "Kevin Grey"

Expecting might be too strong of a word, but fast adoption was certainly the lynchpin to MS's strategy over there- they want to gain some kind of critical mass there before the PS3 launch (which will likely be much sooner in Japan than the US).  MS wouldn't have included Japan in the initial launch if they didn't think it was critical to their success there.

Everyone else can downplay the importance of Japan, but MS themseleves have made it publicly clear that it is important to them that they do significantly better in that territory this time out.

I don't think you understand.  Microsoft included Japan in the initial launch, made a big deal about it there, etc, for srictly PR purposes.  There is no way they expected them to eat it up like candy right out of the gate.  Hell, it took the first xbox several months to pick up any steam here in the US.

All the 360 needs in Japan is 1 or 2 games that are absolute must-haves.   System-sellers.   We'll see if that happens.
2516  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 in Japan: The Kancho of MS Continues on: December 26, 2005, 05:08:32 AM
Oh Nos!  The Xbox360 hasn't even been out a month in japan and it's selling horribly!  It's DOOMED!!!!!!

Excuse me, but was anybody (including MS) really expecting a fast adoption of this console over there?  If it succeeds at all, it will be a very slow burn as Japanese devs start coming out with their offerings.  It will be a year or more before any measure of success or failure will mean shit.

But hey, please, carry on with the hand-wringing....

I can't speak for Ron, but I'm willing to bet he's kind of defensive about the ad because, as a gamer, he probably agrees with a lot of the negative feedback regarding what said company does.  Hell, none of us on staff really like it, but sometimes you have to deal with some shady fucks to get by, god knows I have personally.

The truth of it is, all of us are here for you, our readers, and it pains us when we have to take measures like this to keep on keeping on, and it certainly stings when we in essence agree with what you are saying but have to do it anyway.

Additionally, we appreciate your feedback and support greatly, and those of you who have donated via the paypal link in the past, thank you again.  I know not everyone can contribute like that, but don't think we think any less of you for it- we are here for all of you.  We are constantly looking for new ways to increase revenue for the site to not only keep it running but make it better for all of us, and will continue to do so.

Now, if anyone might have any good leads for advertising that we can add to the rotation and eventually replace this ad, please contact me or Ron, our emails are readily available.

Thanks again,
