281  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / The Warhammer Movie on: May 11, 2006, 04:53:51 PM
Mythic is putting it out, who IMHO are the best MMO game designer out there. They came from nowhere to give us DAOC. Alot of us Wanderers are looking happily with wide grins at this puppy.

PS. The is realm vs realm (PVP) game full out. PVE need not apply for this one slywink

I agree with scott, ms=boring same ol same ol, ps3= pricey but wait and see, nintendo ( which I usually hate)= a breath of fresh air.

This whole hobby needs new innovative ideas and that controller may just be it. Last year my favorite game without a doubt, nothing EVEN CLOSE console wise, was Guitar Hero. It was different and fun. That is what this industry needs IMHO.

well sony understood that porn was so crippling to beta max that they have gone out of their way to make sure the psp accepts porn.

"Some consumers are questioning Sony's decision to accept material from adult-content publishers, while others surmise that the company has learned from the war between Betamax and VHS that adult-oriented movies can significantly affect the expansion of a new media format. One of the reasons for the failure of the Betamax format was the explosion of VHS adult movies, since this genre was not given production clearance in Sony's Betamax format"
285  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Are you hardcore enough.... on: May 09, 2006, 05:08:10 PM
I figure 400 bucks for the game part, and 200 hundred for the hd movie part. If you break the system down into the two things it is, it is not hard to rationalize.   HD movie player is going to run you 200 at least anyway, so is 400 bucks any different than other new gen systems?
286  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 pricing on: May 09, 2006, 05:03:04 PM
just fyi on the beta max thing. It's actually a funny story on why vhs beat beta max, and can be summed up in one word .... PORN.  Yep, the porn industry adopted the vhs standard and with porn available only on vhs for the most part, vhs beat beta.   There have been books written on this, and documentaries made.  Just though you should know, porn was the cause of vhs coming into prominence.

As for this ps3 price piont. Yeah it a tough nut to swallow at 600, but you are getting a blue ray hd movie player also, so that may be enough to sway the family into  rationalizing it.  I mean it isn't much different from a $400 360 plus a 100 buck add on.  As always it will come down to titles.
287  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / 'Fiscal Conservatives' on: April 15, 2006, 02:23:10 PM
yep, and as noted the governement tries to keep the deficit figures lower by hiding things such things as war spending and disaster relief on amendments, as if they can't be estimated like everything else.
Such bullshit,, the real deficit is over 500 billion this year, our overall deficit is approaching 10 TRILLION, and our entire amount of monetary promises the government owes ( deficit+medicare+ss future promised outlays) is 50 TRILLION.

Our country is bankrupt. No two ways about it, and with govt notes now beginning to go higher and higher ( up to 5.5%) since noone is buying, we continue to rely on foreign nations to secure our debt.  Nations are beginning to back off as the higher rates indicate, these rates have been one warning sign many of us have been hoping not to see.

It's going to get ugly at some point in the future, real ugly frown
288  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Wal-Mart controls what games you play on: April 15, 2006, 02:13:37 PM
This one company has enormous leverage in this country. Does Wal mart have the final say in what is ultimately released in games? of course not, BUT they certainly have a huge influence.   In securing space a game could be made on that assurance alone, and if walmart passes on a title it may certainly be a determining factor in getting the plug pulled.

Walmart effects many many industries and products this way. Wal mart is without a doubt one of the worst things to ever happen to this country.

I will not go into the whole walmart tirade, but it is safe to say, as a country we were much much better off before the monolith was created.

I thought most of the Diablo 1 and 2 team have moved on.  NCSOft took a ton, and two development houses are filled with Diablo creators. Hellgate London I think is one game they are working on, Guild Wars has some Diablo guys, and I am pretty sure I am missing another one.

I think the full title of the movie is  " Rocky Balboa- (Stallone is behind on mortgage payments)"

I mean seriously, what world does this guy live in. The original Rocky is in my top 10 of all time movie list, but to do this crap to it is just ridiculous. I Mean the whole point of the first Rocky was a second chance for a washed up fighter past his prime. HE WAS 30 and past his F-ing prime,

To have him boxing at 60, why doesn't Sly just  panhandle or beg for money, this is just horrid.

Oh guess what , know what his next project is- RAMBO, I fing kid you not. A bunchof my friends are extras on this Rocky crap-fest being filmed in Philly right now, they told me that last week.

295  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Wired article on why we suddenly walk away from games... on: January 23, 2006, 05:54:18 PM
single player games I usually go in with a goal, whetherit is to finish the game on normal, win the game playing a certain faction etc, and once that is accomplished I am pretty much done with it.  As for MMORPGs, my true love< Iusually play until I can no longer ignore the glaring problems in game design.  I kinda fear the day someone gets aay from eq templates and does a MMOG right, my god the time I could waste in such a place is frightening.
296  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW mages on: January 22, 2006, 06:47:34 AM
i was a full purple decked out pvping mage, so I have a good idea on mages in bgs

Frost nova, blink, etc will be lifesavers for you. If you want to be a "defensive" mage then frost talents are the way to go, if you want up front power "fire" is the way to go.

The problem with mages , as with most classes, is that in endgame pvp you are very gear dependent.  But rest assured if you stick to it, you can be a death dealing machine especially in AV. I could hide behind the front lines and just destroy people for hours.  In the other 2, you have to be quick and crafty with frost nova, blink, poly etc to survive, but at the end of each game you can be atop the leader board no problemo.

Well anyway best of luck, if ya want to hm  cough cough maybe buy a decked out mage I may know where one may be available
297  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Casual WoW. on: January 20, 2006, 12:52:23 AM
Now if wow added something similar to just items for looks. I suppose thats one thing. but having a game based of nothing BUT looks. I dont think it will do well.

huh? what are you people talking about? Do you even bother to read my post, or even pop over to POTBS. POTBS has much much much more to do at end game than wow, its, gasp, actually dynamic.

Secondly, EA is not making the game, nobody said they were. Flying Labs is making the game. The same guys behind the critically acclaimed Railroads across America games.  They are bringing alot of talent on board also. They have the Academy award winning music producer from Master and Commander doing the music and sound effects among other things.

Now they still have to pull this game off, but from a design standpoint, it is certainly a generation above anything out there.

299  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / umm on: January 19, 2006, 10:45:44 PM
umm unlike WOW in POTBS there is a reason for your actions. Its a nation team game. You actually fight over territory, ports, land, etc things can be actually captured and taken over. The game is actually designed to be dynamic.

The system for port battles is brilliant actually.  PVE begets PVP. See if a nation targets a certain port area and continual takes out pve npc targets, at a point the area becomes contested, ( it opens up to pvp) if during this pvp phaseif  the attacking nation is able to capture certain points etc in a 3 days time then a decisive battle for the port takes place. The game looks at the weeks statistics and invites the top 25 players of each side who did the most during that week to particpate in the port battle at a set time.  If a person can't make the battle, then another person is chosen to take their place. The players actually then meet in a special strategy room just before the battle to work over strategy.  Then all ships head out and the battle begins.  And this is just one of many that could be going on.
Captured towns allow for special goods, special ships etc.

I am telling ya,this game could be amazing.
300  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Casual WoW. on: January 19, 2006, 06:23:06 PM
where WOW messed up and where new MMORPGs like Pirates of the Burning Sea hopefuly get it right, is that time played shouldn't equal power of the character. Time played should equal OPTIONS of the character.

See in Pirates of the Burning Sea, designers are finally undertaken what I have screamed for years, timeplayed doesn't need to equate to power.

See in POTBS hardcore players will have access to more ship options, more clothing options, more pets etc etc, but these things add spice to their character , not POWER. Since POTBS is a pvp based game this is important, casual players may only have a crudy outfit and a few ships, BUT with those he can still play on a level playing field. SEE this is how it should be done.

The EQ template of endgame carrots all adding "power" to a character is deeply flawed, WOW has unfortunately fully enveloped itself in this mess and it never needs to be this way.

Its time we get away from first generations templates, and I am glad to see some game designers see that.
301  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Fools and Walmart: 360 returns on: January 18, 2006, 09:23:50 PM
fools?  Nah they just aren't paid enough to care, so why not just give the customer what ever he wants, not their money they are refunding, and it just makes their life easier.  Why fight with customers when its easier just to refund them, make em happy and get it over with.
I also would expect that walmart has huge problems with employee theft.

Ah Grimgor, haha I ran pvp alot with him, yeah he was pretty good.  Running pvp with a full Wanderer group was a treat to, we would try to win av in under 5 minutes and have no one die.

Anyway I played Crawl, mage and I was among the top pvp mages on the server back in may, june, july, august, september
303  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Casual WoW. on: January 17, 2006, 10:32:49 PM
GGMARK/koz, I disagree 100% with ya about pvp gear. I wish it were true what you said because I was/am a pvper. I HAD to RAID just to keep up with the joneses in the BGS.
To say bwl gear etc is not pvp gear in nonsense. I was one of the top pvp mages on whisperwind for months, you can't tell me that my full epic gear with it +800 damage (YEP +800+) with trinkets on, was and isn't a HUGE advantage.  I still had +6 to crits a ton of Hps, and mana.
Endgame pvp is ALL about gear. I am sory but if you are a blue wearing priest, end game raiders eat you for lunch.

Hell one of the reasons I quit was I put in so much time getting all the best gear, when suddenly Blizz said, oops we are moving lev to 70. Knowing that I had to go BACK to my job of raiding 3 days a week for the forseeable future, JUST so I could pvp was the final straw.

I felt that I needed to play/raid most nights just so I could enjoy pvp on a few nights. To me that just wasn't enjoyable anymore.
As for MC etc being hard, well for awhile it was but when I left we we finishing up bwl and mc had become a joke we could completely farm in under 3 hours.
Add to all of this, nothing in the game ever really changes, loot is all there is, I personally look for more in a game now days.

305  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Casual WoW. on: January 16, 2006, 09:28:19 PM
WOW,as most people know is 2 games.  The 1-59 level game which is a fun glorious ride that all can enjoy. Then there is the 60 End game, in which the game takes a complete 360 and just turns into the same EQ pig we've played before with new lipstick.

WoW at 60 becomes a job. Sure I raided, I was part of a great raid group, couldn't ask for much more, but yet the game still felt like a job. To me it seems as if they just never finished this game and in haste just have halfasses made it a eq raid game.
PVP would be a fine if the eq raid game didn't play such a big part in pvp. PVP success is all gear related. I was lucky enough to be fully decked in the best gear when I played and let me tell you, the difference between bwl loot gear and strat etc gear is night and day.

Personally I would recommend this game to lev 59, at level 60 this game for me fails on so so many levels. It's ashame to this could of been "THE GAME" if the eq mentality hadn't hijacked the wow dev team.

309  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / How I made 300 gold in WoW at level 36 on: January 08, 2006, 06:28:50 AM
easiest way to make cash I found is selling herbs.  Just go to North Azshara just keep picking east ot west to east etc etc.
Mobs are far enough where there isnt aggro problems, its all high grade herbs and it has a fast respawn rate.

I made 30 to 50 gold an HOUR there for months and months. People always wondered why I always had cash, that was the answer.

311  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / problem on: December 31, 2005, 07:17:00 AM
Problem with pvp in wow is that is is all gear based. A casual player in blue gear from Strat and UBRS doesnt stand a chance versus MC/BWL geared players.
I was for a time one of the highest rank mages on my server and while I would like to think it was my skill , I know it was mainly my all purple gear, the damage my mage could do compared to another mage with lesser gear was just ridiculous.

This is WOW's major shortcoming.  Those unable to get in a major raid group are basically at a HUGE disadvantage.

I basically left because after killing over 20,000 players nothing changes....ever.
WOW, is a fun game with great art work, but ultimately the end game just misses the mark IMHO.
312  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The 360 Agony! on: December 20, 2005, 12:41:04 AM
been gaming since pong.. and if time has taught my anything , it is patience. I seriously don't get the whole "first" thing when it comes to game consoles. Why be such a rush to get a system when there really isn't a library out yet?
I have played the 360, its nice, nothing revolutionary however. Considering the power of the pc games, and the great titles out this xmas, not sure what all the rush is about.

exactly- thats why its the best NFL Trivia Board Game -
315  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Consoles on: December 15, 2005, 08:52:28 PM
Consoles themselves are always tricky because NOONE makes any money on them.  I owned a game store back in the late 80 early 90s, so I have first hand knowledge of this. First off microsoft or Sony or whoever actually loses money on each one they sell, yep these things cost as much if not more for them to make and ship then it does for you to buy, with that being said, there is NO margin what so ever.

These $250 games are probably coming in at 234 cost.  Yep stores make a big 15 bucks on a 250 dollar sale. Thats a 6% profit margin, that blows and noone can make a living with those margins except huge warehouse stores (best buy/circuit city/walhell etc), SO consoles are a product that you dont really want to keep a warehouse full of if you are a smaller retailer. Basically EB/Gamespot only sell them so that you may end up buying the games there too.  Software is where the money* is. (* mark up for new games is only around 33% which kinda sucks too- only way these stores (EB/Gamespot)stay in business is because of used games- market up there is HUGE)

So anyway, I am not to shocked that the big retailers are getting them over the more genre specific ones.  Best Buys/etc  live on volume, so of course thats where the majority will end up at the beginning.
