201  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: New Total War game coming: Shogun 2 on: May 08, 2011, 11:14:38 PM
make a mod for this game and change the setting and IM all in.  Historical japan just doesnt do it for me. ( especially because we've done this already once before)
202  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: May 08, 2011, 10:54:33 PM
how can a MMO be story driven? I can understand creating a dynamic sand box world, a world rich with lore and so forth and you create what you will of it ( ie. your own story)

But a on the rails, story driven MMO,  how can that happen?  MMO themepark games like WOW, and SWOTOR are about repeatable content. It would be like watching a movie in which several key scenes just keep repeating over and over.

Your daily quest, blow up the death star, first time awesome coolness, 15th time , not so much.  " Luke I am your father"  yeah yeah, youve told me everyday for a month during this daily quest, I get it already.

I hope Im wrong, but the limits of static world of MMO themeparks sure dont seem like the lead to very immersive storytelling.
203  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Guild Wars 2 on: May 08, 2011, 04:59:05 AM
with Rifts end game being a total failure, we can only hope GW2 comes out sooner rather than later.

World pvp sounds alot like DAOC, which is a great thing.
204  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Rift is in beta on: January 25, 2011, 12:54:29 AM
even on a pvp server, for those times you really dont want to be ganked while pveing and so forth, their are always pve dungeon instances that can be done.  So there is options these days with instancing.
205  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Rift is in beta on: January 25, 2011, 12:50:56 AM
listening to the podcast,  first off those chicks really knew their stuff and asked some very good questions,  secondly, it is nice to hear the game has been developed since the first day with pvp in mind
206  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Rift is in beta on: January 24, 2011, 10:53:30 PM
i think what will make World PVP on PVP servers fun is that the world is kinda dynamic, unlike other games.   Camping wont happen as much, because in a blink of an eye, a rift may open and suddenly the quest hubs etc is in jeopardy, or someone is attacking wards,  .  Its also interesting early on that the quest turn in hubs in lower levels are quite far apart, they get closer the higher you level.  At the last levels, the hubs for both factions are in the same place.  That will be insanity.

So with the batlle over the high lev hubs, rifts openings, invasions, faction strikes,  instances ( dungeon and warfronts)  cities to try to sneak into,  I really dont think ganking a level 25 at lev 50 will be even close to the funniest thing you could be doing at 50.

207  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Rift is in beta on: January 16, 2011, 01:37:52 AM
plus what is being rumored is the port of scion is going to be a open pvp area on all servers.  From what is being talked about there will be plenty of pvp opportunities no matter what server type you play.
208  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Rift is in beta on: January 12, 2011, 08:40:55 PM
yeah, its weird War really didnt leave a huge impression on me either, and I played probably 1000 hours of it. I know it could of been good, but left me wanting. I remember there was always some kind of delay in pvp.  I also remember the world felt disconjointed.  Basically had pvp lakes where you played grab ass with castles. I remember the pvp lake that was a city was kinda cool.  I left before all the capital invasions etc.  But I agree kind of weird you can play a game for 1000 hours and then a year or so later have to really think hard to remind yourself what the hell it was.

As for RIFT, the forum effect has worked and I have pre ordered.  I need a MMO fix, hopefully this will do it.
209  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Mafia II impressions on: August 25, 2010, 02:47:35 PM
Mafia 1 was and is a classic, so if they think 1 was a 4 and this one is a 4, then it must be another classic.  smile

Not saying that was the case here, but I've certainly seen in before.
yeah I know exactly what you mean,  it seems more and more if you arent a cheerleader, you are a potential trouble maker and put a target on your back.  ANd in these tough financial times, people cant afford to be labeled "trouble makers".  Easier to say  "thats looks great"  "awesome""man thats great" and keep your real opinion to yourself.

Quote
The dev seems to be taking the attitude that critics don't "get" the game (kind of like when a summer movie gets horrible reviews but still makes $250 million at the box office).
not likely players are panning it as well.  This game has no legs. Its boring, confusing, unfair, etc etc .    I mean there is some potential here but they totally have blown it in IMHO.

Games need to be
simple as to being easy to understand the story arc and what are suppose to do,
Fun, they need to be fun. If you cant jump into a game and have fun within 2 minutes, game is poorly designed imho.
Dynamic, make the players actions count in various ways.
Immersive, make the game immersive, payers have to care on some level about their avatars and their team.
Fair, the playing field needs to be level between all players

its not impossible, but developers seem to woory more about other crap then the most important stuff, the design itself.

212  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: APB on: July 16, 2010, 04:53:50 PM
horrible reviews.   Its amazing how fast these developers can waste 50 million.  I mean really, in all your internal testing and development and meetings noone could see these problems?  they are so freakin obvious.
213  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Trapped Dead on: July 16, 2010, 04:43:41 PM

classes. I sat last night and tried to picture myself creating a new MMO. But I couldn't come up with even one idea that hasn't been used before
oh common,  that's like sitting in 1930 cinema and saying,  geeze, I guess all the good movies ideas are used and done.

Please, I could and can easily come up with various systems for a MMO, that doesnt use the tired trinity and class set up.  It truly PATHETIC that this mold hasn't been broken.  I mean we have actually been going backwards since Ultima.

As some have said, its the money that is causing this stagnation.  Games takes money, and money people dont want to take risk.   SO we get shitty games, and people lose money anyway.

Gaming and software is getting hammered right now in this economy,  without innovation that will continue.

Maybe WoW's just a one-time aberration that was in the MMO market at the perfect time
disagree, Wow, is just the first of what will be many. Million subscriber games will be the norm this next coming decade.  Wow is not some sort of one time gem, it is just the first hit TV shows, its only gonna grow from here.  Bioware and EA are spending over 100+ millon to make this game, so Iam pretty sure they agree with me.

MMOs are still in their infancy.

so put that with the 10/10  and 9.75/10 reviews coming out of Europe, I think we have a classic and GOTY contender in the making.

My ONLY fear for this game is the whole Treasure Hunt thing. I think it could be an amazing feature, but I fear its going to be a simple "Find Map, Dot Appears on MiniMap, Get Insignificant Amount of Gold, Done".
from what I read, it aint no dot thingee.  It will be like old maps,  with landmarks and so forth.  It will be a lil like real treasure huntin.  At least that is what the reviewer said it was like.

Said it wasnt that easy to find,  is an alternative to making money in case you dont want to hunt, skin, or such.  So the payoff in some cases might be real nice in some of the more advanced treasure hunts.

I wonder if I can import my Tiger Woods character into this game, after all Tiger can get into like 145 posses anytime he wants.

I also think I'll bring a spittoon into the living room this week and start calling my wife a wench.  I figure I should be homeless by midweek  icon_wink

totally disagree, the reason westerns have sold rather poorly, is that there has never been a really good western game.  Westerns are a staple of Hollywood for generations, if the Ol West didnt have a special place in people hearts and imaginations, Westerns wouldn't still be popular after 50 years, yet they are.  If the game is good, it will be a blockbuster IMHO.
yeah thats what I posted,  where does it say that the game will be a hit simply because it is a western?  yeah thought so.

I simply made the point that the western is a genre and area that could capture people interest and imagination if indeed the game was made well.

Gee, I think what we are seeing here is and will prove my simple point.

and you post that  >>I am being an ass, then cry about a personal attack against you  LOL.  God, you never change.

What will not see if this game does well is clear proof that the public wants a Western.  There has been nothing but evidence to the contrary for years, unfortunately.  If it is good (and I hope it is) and does well (and I hope it does), it only proves that Joe Game Buyer wants good games

back tracking already i see.  If people werent interested in playing in the Ol West, this game wouldnt be and have been consistently on Gamespot most wanted for months,  preorders wouldnt be SO high that Gamestop would be doing Midnight releases, etc etc.  Youre assumption is simply wrong and you are one of those people I guess who just cant admit as much

oh well,  not to beat a dead horse,  but hey this is a western game thread.

UK reviews are starting to sneak out, 10/10  aint bad.

Unforgiven.  And even that wasn't what I'd call a blockbuster.
huh? It won the academy award.

as far as the average age of gamers being too young to support this genre?  do you even have a clue as to the average age of the video gamer?  TRY 35

so I guess we will see, wont we, but I really doubt a company in this climate would spend 150 million to create a game if it didnt have the target stats to back it up.  People just dont hand out 150 million these days.

Yeah, I definitely think there is a possibility that gamers interested in Westerns is going to turn out to be very vocal minority of gamers.

Im gonna pre order this weekend, after seeing the  wide open multi player, gotta be a part of that.

As far as the review stuff,  With companies spending tens of millions on development, these games are like movie productions and often these reviewers are more worried about getting the review out fast and first than accurately.  It would be like them walking out half way through a film to review it just so they could get it up the web first.

i have a feeling next gen console will have a feature that attaches a game to the individual console.  Bye bye used game sales.

Eb games days are numbered eitherway,  look at blockbuster,  bankruptcy is just around the corner for them. Downloadable content is the wave of the future.

Great concept, horrible execution. The controls on the screen rarely had anything to do with what was going on, and the floaty text wasn't dealt with in anything close to the Heavy Rain fashion. I love the idea and thought the video was funny, but it felt like the author had no idea what he was doing when he made it.
totally disagree, I think that 7 thing nails the game EXACTLY.  I've played through Heavy Rain twice and that 7 things nails it.
