WHOA!!!!!!!!!

Fantastic episode tonight. Absolutely terrific. Great character interactions, fantastic backstory which we actually cared about, I loved it!!!

Daniel Dae Kim has become something of a running gag since once of the LOST drinking games is "take a shot whenever the Asian guy pops up in the background," but he took center stage tonight and proved just what it takes to make an unsympathetic character sympathetic. Basically, what didn't happen for me last week happened this week - I actually dug the character's history and really wanted to know more. The reveal at the end also floored me because not only did I not see it coming, but it made sense. As usual, the highlights:

-"... in Translation" (for whatever reason it took me a while to get the joke)
-"Bought myself a ticket, doc."
-Jin's answer to Sun's father regarding giving up his dreams
-The building of the raft, which actually looked pretty cool
-the revealing details of Jin and Sun's marriage
-Sun in a bikini, which would be a highlight of any TV show biggrin
-"Didn't see that coming."
-the continuity that Jin still wears the handcuff
-the blink-and-you-missed-it reveal of a certain LOST character on the TV (this one shot me up out of my seat)
-Boone and Sayeed's conversation
-Locke and Shannon's conversation
-"Looks like dinner to me."
-Locke proving again that he rules all
-the final 20 minutes or so which was about the best drama we'll see on TV this week
-"Son of a bitch!"
-the final shot which had to be one of the funniest sight gags I've recently seen

Overall grade: A

What, do you think you're JYoung now?  smile

Good review.  I agree.  Great episode!

Indeed.  A great picture.  However, a winner has alrady been coined.  There's another version of this picture with the caption: "Hey, kid...do I look hungry?" at the bottom.

If you're having problems reaching the site, or mirros, the official torrent can be found here.

Took me about 3 minutes to download.  Maybe less.

Another plus for the DirecTivo units - the unit only has one quality setting - best.  It records the digital stream directly from the satellite.  40 GB = Up to 35 hrs of programming.

Unfortunately, I am not well-prosed on the standalone Tivo.

The DirecTV with Tivo receiver will allow you to watch one thing and record another.  It still won't allow you to watch two different programs output from it at the same time.

The standalone may have some functionality for this that is similar, but I am not sure.  I don't think so, but you can check out Tivo's website, or the Tivo Community, and many friendly persons will be able to help you if nobody jumps on this here.

Notes:

The only Tivo unit that has two inputs for recording are the DirecTivo units for use with DirecTV.

Weaknees is a great site for your upgrades.

If you don't want a kit, you can use the Hinsdale instructions if your model has the bracketing for an extra hard drive (you can check this on weaknees website, I believe).

Two outputs?  It may have more than one set of outputs, but I'm pretty sure all your outputs will output the same picture and sound.  The only DVR on the market that has outputs that can stream separate feeds is a Dish Network DVR (blegh!), I believe.

This article compares John Kerry to Hitler.  Actually, more than compares.  It claims they are the same.

Somehow, I just don't find it credible.  Can't put my finger on it, though.

16  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / So, anyone ever had a sleep study? on: October 21, 2004, 06:33:27 AM
Well, in just about 4.5 hours, I head in to get this sleep study dealie.

I appreciate everyone's responses so far.  It's been good to know what the experience will be like.  My Dad actually has sleep apnea and has had several studies, but won't say more about them than that he doesn't sleep well there.  I tend not to be, I'm the type of person who can sleep anywhere, anytime.  So, hopefully that'll help.

I've been a little nervous all night, but that's just me occasionally.  smile  It doesnt' help I slept poorly yesterday.  Went to bed at 5:30, woke up at 10:00.  Took two naps, but never got up to normal sleep level, I think.

Anyway....

I'll let you know how it goes, oh supportful CGers.

Well, I get to.  Wooo doggies.

That's right, my doctor theorizes that I have sleep apnea.  The sleep medicine specialist agrees this is a very real possibility.  So, next Thursday I go in for a sleep study.  They get to hook me up to a bunch of electrodes and monitors and watch me sleep.  Kinda creepy.

Anyone else done it?  What's it like?

Anything anyone's got for me on anything like sleep studies or sleep apnea in terms of personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

19  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / YAGGET (Yet Another Gone Gold Epitaph Thread) on: October 12, 2004, 06:57:31 AM
Mods, if you see fit to merge this with another thread, then that's okay.  I thought it might be nice to start an official mourning and moving on thread.

All of the following assumes that these ConsoleGold people will continue to be as accomodating and kind to us as they have been.

GoneGold: An Epitaph

And so it has come to this.  Based on the latest information we're all getting, GoneGold is never to return.  I believe the good majority of us accept this fact, if not willingly, then at least readily.  We have known that this moment could be coming for a very long time.

I was by no means well-known on the GoneGold message boards, but I was certainly a regular.  I began visiting Rich's site in 1999.  It took me  much longer to register for the forums, but I've been hanging around for a good while, as a lot of us have.  To say thatGG was just a website is both true and false.  It was just a website.  However, it was also a uniquely special online community created by an incredible man, and frequented by above-average clientelle.  It was once a premium source for information on cames coming to market.  In years past, you would be hard-pressed to find more up-to-date information on games in development.

Even after this aspect of the site went past its prime, GG remained a wholly worthwhile visit in many respects, due to Bill, the Gold Guide, and many other facets of the site, but probably primarily, its message boards.

I'm not sure if a lot of us ever thought that Rich's absence would become permanent, but it seems this has happened.  I think everyone agrees that this is what is best for our Chief Knucklehead, and he will make contact with us if he wishes.  I believe that will eventually happen.  But I also believe that it will take some time.

You may never again type in "www.gonegold" to see it completed with ".com/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi", but that's not the point.  This will survive.  And how appropriate for it to do so at ConsoleGold.

She has seen me changing
It aint easy rearranging

In truth, it was just a website, but also more.  I mean, come on.  The Meal and Metalhed's Sister got married!  What more proof do you need that this was good?

You may not like the way this happened, this ended.  But you don't have to.  While so may argue that this was a slow demise, I'll disagree.  GG was the same great place when I visited it Thursday afternoon.  By evening, the site was unreachable.

It happened this way.  It was quick, it was unexpected.  But it was done.  So, to quote another GG message board favorite in Great Big Sea, I say to the GoneGolders:

Let it go, Let it go
This is smaller than you know
It's no bigger than a pebble
lying on a gravel road

Let it go, Let it go
Got to leave it all behind you
Give the sun a chance to find you
Let it go.

We make a clean break.  Not disrespectfully, just conciously.  We choose this path, even if it is from a lack of option.  ConsoleGold....what a place to welcome such rabble as us.  But you know what?  I say, let's keep doing it.
