Oh yeah, one more thing: the Big Ten is inferior to the Pac-10, which is the greatest of all college football conferences, but which gets no love in the aforementioned polls because of The East Coast Bias.

Actually they get no love because the SEC is better. icon_wink

USC could probably beat any SEC team, but who else stacks up?  Well, I am glad Cal beat Tennessee, but still.

I really liked Act of War: Direct Action when I reviewed it here.  In fact I was just on Amazon and added the expansion, High Treason, to my wish list so I remember to buy it.  A few different twists on the RTS genre.  Some FMV C&C-style cutscenes (without the cheese but plenty of low-budget) and great (at least at the time) graphics.  Well worth the $3.

I might pick up Europa 1400: The Guild: Gold Edition.  It's something I've long wanted to try.  I just know if I go there (via the front-page link!) I can't just settle for a $4 purchase.

And Tennessee lost as well.  A great weekend so far!

That was the first episode I've seen and I LOVED it.  The songs were great.  So surreal.

7  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Japanese baseball on: September 02, 2007, 04:33:18 AM
Remember when Emmit Smith was trying to get football to be an Olympic sport?  Maybe that was just a marketing gimmick?  Must have been around the time of the Dream Team craze.  Seemed kind of pointless.

Back on topic, the game sounded like fun.  I would love to see a baseball game, or any other sporting event, in Japan.  I want to see how crazy those fans can be.  The descriptions in the original post didn't dissapoint.  The Japanese just seem (in my limited experience) a very all-or-nothing people.
8  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Soooo, who here plays Magic? on: August 29, 2007, 02:22:12 AM
I agree.  It was a fun game.  The one thing I always felt is that it just got too big.  Too many cards.  Now that is obviously good for the maker, and it does keep it fresh, but as a normal person on a budget it just seemed hard to keep up with it all.  There were some really crazy cards coming out when I left, I think Ice Age had hit then.  I remember when the Legends and those dual-colored Legendary characters came out and they were very rare.

I was buying the art books when they used to come out.  Basically just catalogs of the cards and art.  I still stumble upon some new cards online and I always read them, but there are a ton of new rules that I just don't understand.  Still, the art is fun and I always think back to playing the game and imagining strategies for the newer stuff.

Gaia's Liege was epic!

I had 4 of each of the dual lands which made up an 80 card 5 color deck.  It was pretty hit or miss as to whether it worked or not, but most people were in awe that I had all of them.

Taiga and Volcanic Island I remember.

Ah, I remember trying to make a Goblin deck with the one set that had a ton of goblin stuff.
12  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Soooo, who here plays Magic? on: August 29, 2007, 12:42:00 AM

I dabbled in it when it was big like 12 years ago or so.  I used to love the game Microprose put out, Duel of the Plainswalker or something.

I liked green best, but always went crazy with multi-colored decks.  I had some of those dual lands that were cool along with mana artifacts.

If I were nearby I'd nerd up and join you.  It can't be as expensive as it used to be?  Probably even worse...

Still have all my old cards somewhere!

For whatever reason I'm not getting a key file written along with my .bin.  But it really is okay.  After 2 days and 5 hours of sheer frustration, I'm really content with merely playing Playstation games on my PS2.  *sigh*

I just wish I had those 5 hours back to do something productive.

Did you ever get it working?

I had some problems, but it was just making sure everything was in the correct directories.  Got it up to 3.03 OE-C.  I have a few PS1 games on my machine I might try out sometime.

Amped3 was panned for it's over-the-top animations and lack of multiplayer... but DAMN the game is fun and a step up from Amped2.

The only drawback was the "kitty litter missions"

Agree with this statement completely, straight down to the damned "kitty litter missions."

Which are those?  The ones where you pick up the cat icons that meow?  For me the worst part was the crazy rail grinding for minutes on end (end of the ninja missions, I believe).  That and finding all the last two events I needed to medal in was a mini-game in itself.

I need to find The Outfit for $20.  Is that the standard price now or was that a big sale?

I enjoyed Axis and Allies, but the newer PC ones didn't really click with me.  I think they tried too hard to add more to the game, which took away from the original board game which I loved so much.  If you are interested in a PC version of the original A&A board game check out some ambandoned sites for "Dogs of War."  It even looks like the original game board scanned in!  I actually owned the shareware version and mailed off for the registration code, playing it online with people before the company that put it out was forced to pull it so the official A&A games could come out.

This looks like fun.  I will definately try out the other one that was reccomended.

Here is an OPART III screen.  Now you can see why someone with no military training might have taken quite some time figuring it all out. icon_biggrin

I'm sure I've seen it, but I'm not sure what series it is.  There are a few that seem to have the same kind of show across History and History International.  It almost seems like they just rebrand the same show, or at least the same premise, every few years.

Based on the others that I have seen that are like this I will give it a thumbs-up.

I miss History's Mysteries.  But I am now in love with the Modern Marvels episodes when they do the most mundane stuff.  Like "containers" last night.

Obviously I don't watch "regular" television. icon_wink

27  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: FYI: Video Codecs on: January 17, 2007, 02:16:39 AM
I hate the bloat of the Windows Media Player.

Media Player Classic is lightweight, fast, and customizable.  For example, I find the ability to pick codecs to use invaluable when troubleshooting.  Some codecs work better than others and you can either block some, prefer others, choose the output options, stuff like that.  In addition I have my own hotkeys setup.

I think there are other utilities out there to deal with multiple codecs that play the same files, but I find it much easier to use inside MPC.

In a word, streamlined.  It's not a resource hog and you don't have to play with all the "features" that come bundled in WMP.  It doesn't even require a seperate install outside of the package, you can just click and go.  I think it is one file and then creates two more for settings.  You should give it a look sometime.  It won't interfere with your other media players unless you tell it to take over the file associations.  I have it set to run everything, including QT and RM files with the associate Alternatives.

Now that is a testimonial!

I'll have to read up on it.  I don't know much about this one, but I do like some strategy.  I've always been partial to the old Operational Art of War series.  Mostly because it took me a good long while to figure it out and don't know if I can handle another crazy learning curve.  Oh, and OPART runs on my ancient laptop.

I give a thumbsup to the K-Lite pack.  I've used it for years now.  No problems with anything I've thrown at it.  A lot of flexibility if you use Media Player Classic.

I just hope they make transferring my Live Arcade stuff to a new box easier.  When my 360 died it was more difficult than it should have been.  I understand why they do it but there has to be an easier, or at least more streamlined, way to do it.  I'm not really that concerned with having to exchange it, but waiting a month to get a ton of extremely large codes read to me over the phone sucked.  I'm not even sure I got all the points back to be honest.

Thanks, papa.  I enjoyed the demo so I might pick this one up.

This is one of the few times a demo has really sold me on a game.  Granted, I don't play many of the demos released on Live, but this was a game I couldn't really put my finger on as to whether I might enjoy it or not.  I did enjoy it, and despite some lukewarm reviews, feel like it will make a fun diversion.

I throughly enjoyed killing the bugs in the garage.  The mech stuff was way hard.  Just curious.

Do not hijack other people's thread.  It is very easy to switch topics within a thread, it's not fair to the original poster.  If you like to discuss something else, please create a new thread.

If I post a thread about bread and the thread ends up discussing music, that should be allowed.

That's going to be a tricky one.  I remember one thread that went so far off track the title was finally changed to Dwarf Fortress to reflect the new discussion going on.  These things are organic.  See how this thread is already veering off topic?  It might be wise to loosen the reins on the enforcement of that particular rule.  That said, it's never been an issue before even with the off-topic posts that are dumped into threads.  That's what makes forums interesting.

Have you hugged a moderator today?
