1  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Vampire The Masquerade - Bloodlines - Minimimum Specs on: February 20, 2005, 08:11:00 PM
I'm playing this on an Athlon 64 3500 with Radeon x800gt, 1 gig ram, and it runs like crap! Choppy all the time. Long loading times. This is the worst running game I've ever experienced.
2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Elder Scrolls Oblivion ones on: February 20, 2005, 08:06:37 PM
And guess what kind of PC you're going to need to run it? PC's of today can barely play Morrowind, which is 3 years old, so I'd estimate this one is not going to run smoothly on anything less than an Athlon 6500.
3  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Can't run Half life on Win xp = can't run any Steam mods on: January 19, 2005, 03:09:07 AM
I got it to work. I put in my cd key then got HL off Steam. Plus, I also got Day of defeat, codename Gordon (hilarious), and added Natural selection, which looks interesting. I also have Opposing force. I thought all these add ons were only possible if you ordered the silver or gold editions of HL2. I just registered HL 1 using my cd key, and now I've got all the extras and I only bought the bronze package. Nice.
4  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Can't run Half life on Win xp = can't run any Steam mods on: January 17, 2005, 10:37:43 PM
I'm browsing through the mods on steam for Half life. One is called 'Brainbread'. It looked interesting so I installed it. It requires the orginal half life to play, even though I've got HL2 installed. Okay, so I installed HL. I can't get HL to run because I get a message "Half life has known compatibiity issues with this version of windows' I'm looking for the patch to fix this so it works in XP but have had no luck so far. Anyone know where I can get the patch and what the latest version of HL 1 is?

Okay, I put in the original HL key and registered it. It is now downloading TFC in about 7 minutes. Thanks for your help everyone.
6  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Steam auto-update questions on: January 13, 2005, 05:05:04 PM
I just tried playing a few minutes of HL2 again after the recent Jan 10 updates. It didn't make any difference in the game. It's still choppy. Stuttering dialogue, same long loading times. Every time I walk into a new scene, it stutters. The first ten seconds of gman's opening montage, he stutters briefly. That was there before the patch, and it's still there. And I'm running on a 3.5 athlon64 with ATI x800xt card and gig of ram. Just ridiculous. I was hoping those bugs would have been fixed, so my second run through would be more pleasant, but there's no way I am going through this stuttering again. I bought this system to play this game, so I was not too happy to find out that a near  top of the line system still can't play the game smoothly, even after updates!
7  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Trying to install Team fortress classic on: January 13, 2005, 04:49:38 PM
Input the cd key to get TFC? Where exactly? In steam? I don't have HL1 installed.  Do I have to install that first to get TFC?

When I try to access TFC through the steam menu, it just offers me packages I can buy, and says I already own HL2. Where exactly do I download TFC? I see all the mods, but I don't see a way to individually download TFC.
8  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Trying to install Team fortress classic on: January 13, 2005, 04:22:46 PM
I haven't played for a few years and wanted to try it again. I have HL2 from Steam, but I didn't get TFC with it because I only have bronze version.  How do I go about getting it now? Do I have to pay extra to download it from Steam? Or can I get it free from somewhere else? There seem to be a lot of sites offering TFC downloads, but I just downloaded one and it refused to open. It used to be that you needed original HL installed to play TFC. I don't know if it's still the same, or what I need to do now that I have HL2 installed. Any recommended sites for getting the complete lastest version of TFC? And what size would that file be?

The latest update when I right click the menu is Jan 10. Sounds recent to me.
10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Stuck in COD 'united offensive' on: January 06, 2005, 10:33:09 PM
I'm supposed to call in an air strike using binoculars. How do I do this? I'm focusing on the anti tank position and hitting my primary fire. Nothing happens. No red x appears no matter how long I'm focused on the enemy.
11  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Need level names for HL2 on: December 07, 2004, 01:33:00 AM

12  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2 Level Help Thread on: December 01, 2004, 03:36:03 AM

I'm in the sandtrap level, taking on two gunships at the prison, while my bugs follow me. I cannot take these damn things down. One is bad enough, but two??? (I'm also playing 'hard' level) How many shots does it take? I can't find anymore health and even though I'm running back and forth from the rocket reload bin to the dumpster, I always get wasted. I've even tried throwing bait balls at the gunships so the bugs will go after them and draw fire, but this doesn't help. I've been trying to beat this part for two days now.
13  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Go get Sid Meiers Pirates! right now! Its totally worth it on: November 30, 2004, 07:22:15 PM
Thanks for that tip about changing the difficulty level. I don't understand why the difficulty level wasn't a choice from the get go.  But yes, now it is definitely more challenging.
14  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Go get Sid Meiers Pirates! right now! Its totally worth it on: November 29, 2004, 07:40:32 PM
I don't share your enthusiasm for this game. I played it last night, and was amazed at how simple and easy it was. It's like a kid's game. There is no challenge. I went right out with my little sloop, destroyed ships much bigger than mine, one after the other. Duels were also ludicrous, and far too easy. A number pad comes up TELLING YOU what key to press. LOL! Once again, no challenge from any of the enemies. IMO, 'Pirates of the Caribbean' was a lot better, and the sea battles far superior, and the duels were tough. I hate constant reloading too, but this game is way too easy. I knocked off an English ship, then sailed right into an English harbor. No resistence. You go to the bar, everyone is friendly, willing to join me. I don't get it. This game is for 8 year olds.

Athlon 64 3500+ cpu
1 Gig corsair ram
Sapphire Radeon x800xt

monitor?...wait for it....50 inch Panasonic LCD...over 5.1 sound system.

Picture me lying back on the couch last night, lights out, booting up the game for the first time with my wireless mouse. Hey, even I envy me.
Bought this system last week specifically for this game. Everything on max settings, and 'v sync' on. Runs smooth as silk at 1280x1024, Frame rates in the range of 100-300 (using fraps) with vsync off.

Yes, some stuttering occasionally when entering new scenes. 20-30 second load times. Who needs to watch movies when there are games like this out there? Holy crap! I just walk around in a daze admiring textures and faces! If this is the future...bring it on!
16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Questoin about walking speed in HL2 on: November 17, 2004, 06:19:33 AM
Walk is bound to 'w'. Walk quickly is bound to 'shift'. I get only one speed when I use 'w' key, or when I use it with the 'shift' key. Shift does nothing to increase speed. I don't get this. All my other keys seem to work like they should. I tried remapping 'walk quickly' to 'q' and it does nothing at all. Is there only one speed to walk?

...okay...didn't see that last post until after I posted. Thanks. Man, I'm having fun just walking around getting tazered!
17  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Questoin about walking speed in HL2 on: November 17, 2004, 05:21:47 AM
I just started the game and my default walk speed using the 'w' key is the same speed as when I use 'shift'. Am I not supposed to move faster when using the shift key? Am I missing something, or is there only one speed that I can move?

And what's the deal when I pick up objects in the train station? They magically float in front of me. Is it supposed to look like that?
18  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / When will HL2 be unlocked? on: November 16, 2004, 07:01:36 PM
Okay, thanks for the clarification. I shut down steam from the task bar and restarted. It began unlocking. took about 5 minutes to get to 100% I'm now set to go! I still can't believe it's here. Even my wife wants to see the game so I will have to hold off until tonight so she can see it with me. Hmmmm. Will I be able to wait that long?
19  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / When will HL2 be unlocked? on: November 16, 2004, 06:19:49 PM
Uh...isn't that what I said I was doing? All I get is this browse box with 'coming soon' over hl2. I click hl2 and I get "pre-loading complete. When game is officially released, you'll be able to play it immediately." Don't tell me I'm in a 2 day line up waiting to receive some kind of authentication!? You've got to be kidding. I'm starting to regret having purchased this online.
20  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / When will HL2 be unlocked? on: November 16, 2004, 06:08:12 PM
I preloaded the game last night. It tells me preload is complete, and I will be able to play the game when it's officially released. When is that exactly? I thought it was today. Why do others seem to be playing this game, when I can't get access to it? I've restarted steam over and over. Doesn't make a difference.  frown
21  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Vice City Help on: November 06, 2004, 06:55:15 PM
I'm having the same problem with this mission. But I'm not willing to get a gamepad. It's just ridiculous that they even included this mission. It totally spoils the game for me. I gave up after a dozen tries, and that is a shame because until that point, I enjoyed the game. Stress, endless repetition and time limits are okay for 'real life' but in a game? Puhlease! I really wanted to see what happens beyond that level, but I can't get past it. I can't believe there isn't even a cheat or 'end this mission' cheat for the level. I thought there were cheats for everything. Bad, bad, bad, level design. No game should force you to consider to install another controller device to finish a level. That's insanity.
22  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / System building recommendations/changes? on: November 06, 2004, 05:40:39 AM
I don't know. This is the recommended system by NCIX. If it needed more power, you'd think they would push a more expensive power supply on me. But I've now changed my mind and I'm buying the Sapphire radeon x800xt, since I can get it for $10 more, and the gt's sold out before I could place the order. Seems to be impossible to find the gt in Vancouver right now. I also suspect the radeon will run quieter and use less power than than the GT, which is good because I want to keep the box as quiet as possible.
23  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Can't access 'launch system restore' on: November 04, 2004, 10:10:55 PM
I was on win98 before 2000.

So if I do a 'complete backup', does this mean I need to have extra space for the backup that is equal to the total of everything that's on the computer now? example: I have 250 gigs of data, means the backup space will need to be 250 gigs? I don't have that kind of backup space.

I just want to make sure that if there are any problems with installing the the new ATI cat drivers, that I can go back to previous settings before the install of those drivers. What do I need to do for that?
24  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / System building recommendations/changes? on: November 04, 2004, 09:37:13 PM
I'm getting a new system in the next week, and ready to spend about 2 grand (CAD). Here is the idea I have, based on NCIX in Vancouver, Canada., who have a good service rep.

The CAD prices are included. If you see any parts that could be improved, while keeping the price similar, please let me know. I am only going here by the store's recommendation on a 'gaming system for HL2' around the $2000 price point. I don't know if this mb is the best match for the 3500+. (They tell me it's the most stable)

The point of this system is mainly to play new games, as in HL2, and enough game power to keep me going for the next 2 years without major upgrades. OS will be XP, and I already have a monitor. I know that the 3500+ is not the fastest, but at the $400 price point, it's the best deal right now for cost/power ratio. I think the part that could be purchased cheaper seperately here is the 6800gt. This system will be assembled by NCIX, but I don't have a problem putting in the video card, and sound card myself, if I buy it somewhere else cheaper. But I do not want to build from scratch. I'm definitely set on using the 3500athlon, the Antec case, and the 6800gt. Please recommend improvements for the other parts of the system, if any. Is the NEC dvd drive okay? What about the ram, the mb, hardrive? Does anyone know of any stores in the Vancouver,B.C, area that can beat these prices on a custom built system? I'm not interested in ordering a custom built system over the internet from somewhere cross country. Too risky for me. I would like local.  Thanks for your help.

I don't have anything called 'system restore' under that 'system tools' menu. I do have one called 'backup'. Is this the same thing? It has options for 'backing up' drives. Maybe XP it says 'system restore'. I'm on win2000.

I'm trying to set up a new 'system restore' point before I change my ati cat drivers. I'm on win2000. I open 'msconfig' and under the 'general' tab there is a 'launch system restore' button but it's greyed out. I have no idea why, or how I can access it.

28  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Thief 3 'out of range' on my resoultion. How do I fix it? on: October 25, 2004, 05:26:55 PM
Thanks for the link. I've installed the program but I still cannot get the game to run. My LCD TV's current refresh rate is 75. I've tried all the resolutions 'at' and 'above' the rate that the game was previously running on (I had it set and working around 1000x700 and then I turned it up 'ONE" level. Can't remember exactly what it was) and set the refresh in refresh lock to 75. So, this should be telling the game to run at those resolutions at 75. I start the game, I still get my red 'signal' flash on the TV and the blank screen, indicating the game is still out of range. I don't know what to do. I had the same problem with splinter cell, but I was able to find the ini. file and change the resoultion back down that way. I would like to find the ini file that allows me to do that in 'thief 3' but so far I can't track it down. If anyone has an idea what this file is called, please let me know. I have gone very carefully through about 6 ini files in the game and I still can't find where the resolution change is stored.
29  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Thief 3 'out of range' on my resoultion. How do I fix it? on: October 25, 2004, 02:18:42 AM
The refresh rate of my LCD is set at 60. It can't go any lower. And turning it up to 75 up makes no difference. I need to change the resolution of the game down a notch.
30  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Thief 3 'out of range' on my resoultion. How do I fix it? on: October 24, 2004, 05:35:34 PM
I tried changing the resolution in Thief 3 and it was too high for my LCD monitor. It went out of range and now the screen is black and I can't get in to change it back. I can't change it through 'safe mode reboot' either because the game won't start in safe mode because it needs the sound drivers to start the game, and in safe mode the drivers are off. So now I'm trying to find the ini. file so I can change the res back that way. Does anyone know the name of the ini. file to change the resolution settings in Theif 3? I'm going through them right now and I can't find it.

35  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Can't reboot in safe mode in win2000 on: October 20, 2004, 11:08:20 PM
Okay, I finally found the boot.ini. Thanks.

As for the ps2 ports, I can't hook up my keyboard to either since it's USB. So this means I either have to buy an adapter from usb to ps2, or I have to buy another non wireless keyboard that hooks directly up to the ps2? This seems like a lot of work just to boot into safe mode.
36  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Buy a new computer or upgrade what I have? on: October 20, 2004, 09:58:45 PM
I heard this from various tech people in computer stores. xp is supposed to be much more cpu intensive, resource hog, etc. So you're saying that if you had a choice with a new OS install that is going to be primarily for gaming from HL2 and onward for the next 2 years, install XP?
37  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Can't reboot in safe mode in win2000 on: October 20, 2004, 09:18:34 PM
Okay, thanks, I'll try this. Excuse my ignorance, but what is a ps2 port? Is this the mouse port? If so, don't I need an adapter to hook up the wireless USB hub to the mouse port?

...I unchecked that box. Amazingly, still no boot.ini is visible in the pss folder, and it still can't be found by using 'run'. How is it possible that I don't have a boot.ini file? Is it in another folder than 'pss'?
38  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Can't reboot in safe mode in win2000 on: October 20, 2004, 08:48:15 PM
I have a wireless logitech with the alternate 'i touch f key utilites' using the 'f lock' button. I am making sure that it's set to 'standard f key' when I reboot, but it still does nothing. I'm pressing the f8 immediately upon seeing the options appear on the screen, and I keep pressing it.  If this does not work, I'll try to change the boot.ini file. Thanks.

...okay, i went into folder options and it's already set to 'show hidden files'. I searched the win root folder under 'pss' because that's where the 'boot.ini backup' file is located. There is still no original boot.ini file. And it still does not show up when I search for it using 'run' I made a copy of the 'boot.ini backup file' and called it 'boot.ini' and saved it in the same 'pss' folder. Still, I get nothing when I search for boot.ini file. ????
39  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Buy a new computer or upgrade what I have? on: October 20, 2004, 05:44:25 PM
With HL2 coming, I'm finally going to go for an upgrade. Question is: do I upgrade what I have, or just buy a new computer? Currently I have an Athlon xp1600, ecs k7s5a mb, over 1 gig 2700 ddr ram, sb audigy 2 soundcard, Radeon 9700 pro. This worked fine for games (even farcry) until doom 3 brought me down to 8-10fps when two creatures were in the same room. Unplayable. Even Morrowind won't give me more than 5fps in Balmora. Just pathetic.

My first idea was to just upgrade this system with an Athlon64 3500+ cpu, a new motherboard (which one works best for this cpu I have no idea) and a gig of the fastest ram. The 9700 pro is still good enough in this setup. Problem is, I have so many programs installed over the last 5 years, I really do not want to reinstall everything again. My present lame mb can be upgraded to 2.0 cpu, so that's pointless. I get different opinions about how well the system will function if I only replace the cpu and mb without doing a fresh install. Some say it could work fine, others say it will be slow or a lot of things won't work properly. Basically a crap shoot.

The other option is just to buy a new gaming only rig, and have a second computer. This will cost about triple (around $2000 CAD) than just upgrading the mb and cpu on my present system.  If I buy a new rig, it would have an nvidia 6800gt, 3500+ athlon64 cpu, 200 gig hd, new sound card, 1 gig ram, and I would run it on win2000. I have no idea if xp is better for games, but I haven't heard good things compared to win2000.

The other question I have is that I will either be playing HL2 on my 50inch LCD TV, with a refresh rate of 60hz, or my 19 inch viewsonic LCD, also with a refresh rate of 60. Maybe my idea of a new power rig is pointless if the most fps I'm ever going to see is 60. But I really do not want to go back to CRT.
40  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Can't reboot in safe mode in win2000 on: October 20, 2004, 04:52:29 PM
Okay, here's my problem. I am playing thief 3 on a 50in LCD screen. I was trying out a higher resolution in the game and it went out of range of the tv's capabilites. Now I can't get back into options to change the resolution back down because I have a blank screen. There is no other way I can think of to change the resolution. If I reboot or start the game over, the res is stuck on 'out of range'. I read that if I reboot in safe mode I should be able to access the game options and change it. Fine, I try to reboot and hit 'f8' key when the options come up. Nothing happens. I tired again and again, hitting all the keys, and nothing happens. the computer just reboots normally. So I found some other info about how to reboot into safe mode using another method: use 'run' command to find the 'boot.ini' file and add a command line at the end of it  I search for that, but nothing comes up. I do a file search for 'boot.ini' and I get one file: 'boot.ini backup' that looks like this:

[boot loader]
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

So, I'm stuck. Where is the original boot.ini file? I'm 2 thirds through the game and I can't access it anymore because I can't change res and I can't even boot in safe mode. Does anyone have any ideas how I can solve these problems?
