41  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [PC/PS3] Final Fantasy XIV Online - A Realm Reborn this Winter on: August 09, 2013, 03:42:05 PM
I think it will be a niche game.  It might be one of the last old school MMOs before the likes of EQN and others that are trying to redefine the genre take over.  Most people are not going to like that this game starts out with the standard kill rats and fetch quests.  But then, console owners don't have much choice in MMOs and it might do well in that market.

My guess is that there is some good stuff going on with the game with regards to the class system and group dynamics but it's not immediately apparent.

I was actually a bit surprised to see that the game has typical auto-attack style combat after playing recent MMOs like GW2, Neverwinter, Tera etc. but I guess the first iteration of the game came out before some of those so it sort of makes sense.

I'm still going to try this out because I have a hankering for some old-school mmo action but if you are looking for something different, don't bother unless you are a huge Final Fantasy fan.
42  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Oculus Rift VR headset on: August 08, 2013, 07:48:40 PM
I think the biggest challenge with OR and VR technology in general is going to be finding out what percent of the market experience headaches/dizziness/nausea while using such a device.  It's still a big unknown if there will be side-effects to using a device such as this over extended periods of time.

I hope it turns out that it is no worse than watching TV for long periods but I guess we will have to wait and see.

I haven't quite figured out what Landmark is - is this a free to play game that comes out this Winter and then the real EQ Next comes out later?

Yeah something like that.  But if you are not interested in EverMineQuestCraft, you can still go in Landmark and build templates for player housing, guild housing etc which you will be able to bring in to EQN when it comes out (assuming you have enough resources).

Is this a good game to show-off pretty graphics?  I was considering getting beta since I just upgraded my desktop.

I'm not a fan of cartoony style either but if they live up to delivering half of the cool new stuff they are promising, I'm in.  The Kerran needs to look more like a lion and less like a Disney puppy.

47  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Next Gen]Tomb Raider 2 on: August 02, 2013, 10:14:42 PM
That's part of the storyline regarding the magic of tatoos so it's irrelevant.  The point is that Lara behaves pretty realistically in her situation.  It could have easily been a guy in her position and we would have commended the developers for doing a good job of showing how someone transitions from being totally inexperienced to do what's necessary to survive.  If other games don't do a good job of showing male vulnerability, it's not a fault of Tomb Raider, other devs need to step up.
48  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Next Gen]Tomb Raider 2 on: August 02, 2013, 09:45:58 PM
If Lara behaved like Joel, it would be a completely unrealistic portrayal.  Joel is a ruthless mercenary, why would he break down and cry when he got hurt?  Lara hasn't even seen combat and is thrust in this new situation.  Her reactions are very similar to the lead male character in Farcry 3 who also starts out very squirmish about having to kill anyone.
49  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Everquest Next on: August 02, 2013, 09:28:02 PM
GW2 events have no permanence.  They gave an example where an event in EQN could involve the start of building a city that lasts 3 months.  Assuming that this is a branching event (they weren't too clear), you might end up with a city on some servers and no city on others.  e.g. one server couldn't stop the goblins from coming in and killing the builders.  This kind of scenario is very different from GW2's repeating centaur invasions.
50  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Everquest Next on: August 02, 2013, 09:10:18 PM
EQ1 helped make 3dfx cards popular, hey maybe EQN will bring the next gen of voxel processing cards to the market.

I'm impressed with what I've seen so far.  Sure, many ways they can fail but at least they are being ambitious.

Lara Croft spends the vast majority of this game grunting, moaning and crying from pain and suffering. There's not really a message being told through all of this, nor is there something to make it all feel lighter. It comes off as hurting Lara for no other reason than to seem dark, and that's exploitive to me. I felt really uncomfortable through large stretches of the game, and it wasn't the good kind of uncomfortable that good storytelling can do (such as the discomfort you feel watching the Red Wedding in Game of Thrones, to take an example of something that also deals with lead women in pain).

How is this exploiting women?  I didn't find the grunting and crying sexual.  If Nate from Uncharted fell on spikes, he would probably make some noise too.  Are most female tennis players exploiting women because their grunts sound almost sexual in nature?

A few times the camera moved to some questionable positions while Lara was crawling through caves.  Those were the only times I thought that the developers were trying to titillate.

54  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: LOL or even DOTA2 on: July 31, 2013, 07:49:35 PM
LOL was the first of these type of games I played.  I'm still playing after 3 years or so.

I tried DOTA 2 for a bit and didn't like it.  It's more complex which I suppose if you ask a DOTA 1 fan, is a great thing.  I find the complexity gets in the way of just having some fun fights.  Things like managing mules, last hitting, shit load of items.  The graphics are more advanced but I think LOL graphics has more personality.

You might consider trying Prime World (see thread below).

I think with any of these games, if you are just starting out, your enjoyment is largely skewed by the people you can play with and their willingness to teach you the ropes.  I suspect that's the hump the majority of people who casually try the game don't get over.

Bioshock Infinite was winning by far but then I played Last of Us.  I normally don't even like survival horror and zombies so this came as a surprise.  I really don't think any game is going to top Last of Us this year.

Costco in Canada has a bundle for $514:
Killzone
2 PlayStation 4 DualShockŪ4 Controllers
HDMI Cable
Power Cable
Wired Mono Headset
USB Charging Cable

I guess the game and the controller are the only extras?  So about $6 in savings.

It would be awesome if they got the Chocolate Rain guy to do the intro song for this game.  Just replace chocolate with satellite.  The lyrics fit perfectly.

What kind of setup do you have?  I was looking at Obutto but seems like a bit much.  I tend not to use my steering wheel much just because it's so inconvenient to pull up a table in front of my sofa every time.  But I lost most of my furniture recently to flood so I am looking into other options.

I accept that Naughty Dog doesn't do controls well and still haven't learned to do controls well.  Even though I like Uncharted and really like Last of Us, controls are the weakest part of the game.

If it's a design decision, it's a terrible one.  It's like DarkFall Online excusing their terrible inventory system as "working as designed".

If you like it, good for you but don't try to tell the rest of us we must be stupid for disagreeing.

Is post processing or something else turned off in the beta?  Judging from the screenshots, character models and even the environments look very sterile.  If that's how it's going to end up looking, people are going to have the same complaints as with Everquest 2.  The models look like they are exported from Poser.  Compared to much more vibrant games like Aion/Tera/Rift, the graphics don't look that impressive.

You and I must be looking at different screenshots then.  Having played all four, I'd say the FF XIV is easily the best looking of the bunch.  Tera and Aion definitely go for the more "over the top" JRPG look (i.e. ridiculous and/or skimpy armor, crazy weapons twice the size of the characters, etc.), but I think FF XIV has far better character animation, realistic environments, and creative monster design.

It's got very much a traditional Final Fantasy aesthetic...if that's not your thing to begin with, this probably won't change your mind much.

I've played every single FF game except the MMOs and enjoyed the graphics so that's not the problem.  I look at a screenshot like this and the skin looks like plastic (hence the Poser model reference).  It might be the uncanny valley effect but the characters just don't seem to fit in the environment.  Of course some better lighting/textures/post processing could probably make a world of difference which is why I asked if something is turned off in the beta or not implemented yet.

Wait "crazy weapons twice the size of the characters" is not Final Fantasy?  I thought they invented this Tongue

Is there any chance the combat is better in this one?  I love Skyrim but I am recently playing Kingdoms of Amalur and the combat system just blows away ES games.  I know Bethesda has been trying to improve on it with each iteration based on player feedback but they still haven't got it right.

This is a MMO though so I'm sure there will be some other challenges but I hope they have looked at games like Tera.

6.  ODDITIES: The game starts out with some PvE and intro content with voice overs.  On the Keepers side, it's a vaguely fusion Asian theme and we get some incredibly hideous, racially offensive, Asian accents.  The dialog isn't even consistent within a sentence, sometimes they'll flip r and l, sometimes they won't.  It's kind of funny, but also pretty racist for a modern game.  Ditto with some rather antiquated sexist comments and content as well, like a talent that only works on members of the opposite sex, and goofy dialog that would probably be offensive to most modern women.  I suppose you could say it adds to the charm, but it's definitely a bit bizarre and makes the game feel cheap.  Recommend dropping the inane accents immediately.

I wonder if this has anything to do with it being a Russian game.  Maybe it's the translators fault.

The first guy you unlock who looks like Ezreal is obviously gay, his talents should synergize with same sex champions Tongue

72  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Kingdoms of Amalur Impressions on: July 06, 2013, 03:59:09 AM
Got this on a Steam sale and finally started playing it.  Went in with pretty low expectations but I'm finding it really good.  It's like playing an action version of Everquest 2.

It came with a bunch of DLC like Teeth of Naros which starts at level 10+.  I'm wondering, should I skip these until I finish the main quest?  It wouldn't be good if it overleved me and the main quest provided no challenge.  I didn't even like the weapon pack that I got to start with.  Bunch of set items that basically made loot pointless for the first part of the game and combat trivial.

I experienced a major glitch in the game too.  It might be due to running low on HD space.  I basically lost 5 hours of play and was forced to restart from the beginning.  I saw the "Loading 0.00%" message in the save screen but couldn't save because Save was disabled.  Luckily I didn't have any other issues after I deleted some old game data to make more space.

How much space is enough? I have 20GB+ free after the install.

That should be more than enough.  I was probably down to 1GB.  There was no warning about low space though, I am just making an assumption of what might have caused the problem.
77  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is it time for more Joint 'Cross-Platform' Play? on: June 27, 2013, 02:47:01 AM
To answer the subject question, yes it's definitely time for more Cross-Platform play but it will never happen.  Sony and Microsoft don't give a shit about gamers.  They only care about market share and bottom lines.  I used to think that maybe Nintendo was a company for gamers.  And maybe they were at one point but once you get big and the suits take over, it's over.
