2201  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Name that game on: March 07, 2005, 06:17:01 PM
That was a great game.   I knew exactly which game you meant even by your vague description.

Anyone remember a racing game with a similar top-down view that probably came out around the same time (maybe a bit later)?  I think it may have been shareware.  It seems very similar to a GBA game that just came out.  You get to upgrade your car as you earn money from winning races.  Yeah I know, this description sounds even more generic.
2202  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Diablo vs. Nox on: March 07, 2005, 06:10:37 PM
Diablo easily for single player.  Nox started to get boring near the end.  Nox multiplayer was a lot of fun though for a quick arcady action fix.  Love the control scheme in nox, proves that you don't need a joystick to play fast paced action games of that type on a PC.

VR might be closer than you think.

  !!!!!

This is a trick right?  Camera trickery?  Special effects?  It can't be real!

That would be my guess too.  I don't think holographic technology is anywhere close to what they showed.
2204  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The immersion factor on: March 03, 2005, 03:53:31 PM

It was my first mmrpg.  Logging into Kelethin, the wood elf city on top of the forest and seeing all the people milling around like it was a living breathing city was a very immersive experience.  I remember camping bandits in Lesser Faydwer forest, looming trees all around me, giant spiders in the periphery.  And then it starts to rain, my sub woofers booming with the crackle of lightning.  It was everything I wanted a  MUD to be fully realized in pretty decent graphics for the time.  MMRPGs since then haven't been able to create that "first time" excitement again.  I haven't seen a good implementation of first person perspective in mmrpgs after EQ.  For some reason, they all default to 3rd person which to me makes it lose a level of immersion only possible in first person perspective.  Daggerfall/Morrowind were good examples of doing first person well.

As for VR, I don't think the technology is there yet.  We're not even at the level of Lawnmower Man yet.

2206  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / On the horizon...jack squat? on: February 22, 2005, 07:03:12 PM
After Rome Total War, I can't think of any PC game that I'm excited about.  Usually there are a few that I'm really looking forward to but I can only think of some that are still a long way off (e.g. Morrowind sequel).  The next SWAT game might have some potential, I should check out the demo.  I'm starving for a good new rpg (not massively multiplayer).  Of course there are still games coming out that I will buy but they are not the jaw-dropping GG effect type games.  RTW was the last of that caliber.
2207  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The Essential 50 Games on: February 22, 2005, 06:46:12 PM
Everquest should be on the list for many reasons (or perhaps Ultima Online but EQ had far more subscribers).

If Halo is on the list then Tribes 1 should be there.  Tribes influenced Halo and many other online games.  Counter Strike was an important game as well.
2208  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Winning 11 on: February 22, 2005, 03:00:31 PM
I restarted and my current stats are 1-8-0.  I do cheat and reload if I lose, every game I lost has been a one goal affair.  I used to restart if the computer scored 1 goal but not anymore, I can now score goals.  Through pass kicks butt for getting past their defence (I very rarely use the regular short pass).  Once you are up the channel, a low cross (triple tap cross) works wonders if you can thread it through.  If there are too many defenders in the way then a near post cross (double tap) works well.  Don't be afraid to pass back instead of giving the ball away.  It brings midfilelders forward and gives you more options.

However, I'm sure the computer cheats cause every time I get a goal early they always tie it up but if I don't get a goal then they can't score either.  Defence has been pretty easy for me, I mostly double team the ball carrier or cut off passing options by positioning correctly.  Usually when the computer  is faced with that situation they will pass it back.  They might try an early cross but the chances of scoring are pretty low.
2209  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Diablo 3? on: February 16, 2005, 07:00:43 PM
Great to hear about D3!

I love mmrpgs and I think WoW is one of the best ones out there but I still think Diablo is the better game.

The difference with Diablo is that even with a short sitting (~1hr) I get a good sense of accomplishment.  Not the case at higher level WoW.  Maybe it's time for mmrpgs to move to the next evolution cause I've been playing the same game since EQ1 albeit with some of the frustration removed.
2210  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Winning 11 on: February 14, 2005, 03:28:08 PM
Had an awesome time playing 4 player co-op this weekend.  Kicked ass at 2 stars so we moved up to 3.  I thought we would get slaughtered considering the other 3 didn't have WE experience but we held our own.  Didn't win a game but kept it within 1 goal and had our chances at scoring.

Oh I won my 1st game in ML, 3-1!  All 3 penalty shots, heh only way I can get a goal so far smile  At least I'm finally getting in scoring positions so much so that the computer is fouling me in the penalty box.
2211  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Winning 11 on: February 11, 2005, 06:38:37 PM
Devil, I'm only doing slightly better than you in master league 3 stars.  In about 10 games I have 1 loss and 9 ties.  I'm doing very well in defence but I can't get a goal.  The one time I scored I screamed out loud.  That's the difference beween WE8 and FIFA, I don't wake up the neighbours while playing FIFA smile  I'm hoping though that it will get slightly easier as soon as I can trade for a decent striker (and I get more practice).

I'm slowly getting more chances at goal, side attacks seem to work the best.  Often if you run along the sidelines, the computer will just knock it out and you still keep possesion.  The double tap cross (B) has worked well for me in creating decent chances.  Even though I'm using the most offensive formation, defence still seems solid.  I used to rely a lot on double teaming button (X) but I'm getting better at 1on1 situation with A and B buttons only.

Challenge training is a brilliant feature in helping to learn the game without having to memorize the manual.  Earn a few stars in there and you will see immediate pay-off when playing a game.

So far I'm really enjoying the game even though I am not a huge soccer fan (I just like to watch the World Cup).
2212  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / flight sim question on: December 20, 2004, 06:40:59 PM
Lock On is a very good modern combat sim.  Graphics are incredible.  It is not very beginner friendly however.
2213  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / EQ2 hints and tips on: November 26, 2004, 06:37:19 PM
This may seem pretty obvious to those who played City of Heroes but you can simply target the "Main Assist" and you will hit his target.  This is a nice substitute to using /assist macro because you don't have to keep reusing /assist each time the MA changes target.

There seems to be a slight bug with this feature because your auto attack remains on even after the MA has stopped attacking.  This can cause you to accidentally attack a new target so remember to turn it off manually after each fight.
2214  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / everquest 2 I need fighters/warriors info. on: November 26, 2004, 06:28:05 PM
With about 23 levels under my belt as a Berserker, it seems that Guardians are the best tank in the game followed by Berserkers.  I read a lot about every fighter class tanking equally well but this doesn't seem to be true in practice.  The two warrior classes seem to hold taunt the best and have more defensive skills than the Monk/Brawler/Knight classes.

One big misconception was that Berserkers can only wear medium armour (which makes sense from a traditional role perspective).  But in EQ2 they can wear the best armor a Guardian can wear (heavy plate or vanguard).

Now I'm basing these observations on just grouping with other fighter classes.  If you play one of those classes and feel differently, I'd like to hear your perspective.

Off-topic: The latest nerf on the berserker aoe attack (blood rage) seems a tad much.  It only ever worked on green con or lower mobs reliably (almost never proc'd on a blue).  So now that it does so little damage, it's not worth draining your health just to do a little damage to green/grey mobs.
2215  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / EQ2. i hate it. on: November 22, 2004, 09:24:53 PM
I'm not sure I understand the complaint either.   Exploring is fun.  If you're really frustrated, ask someone for help.  Afterall, that's why the two M's are there in front of RPG.  Infact, someone ran up to me the other night and asked where the cemetary was.  It's was simple as that.

If quests are designed in such a fashion that a waypoint was setup for every place you have to go then the quest system would get old fast (e.g. SWG).
2216  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Everquest 2 - first impressions on: November 12, 2004, 09:59:13 PM
I think any class can easily solo to level up in EQ2.  It's just the uber items that requires groups and raids.  You are not required to complete every quest you take.  That's one of the things I don't like about the Quest system.  I wish quests also had "cons".

Having a hard time finding quest NPC's?

Just ask your local guard!  Easy as that.

Very nice tip morlac.   So many undocumented features in the game, we probably need a "tips" thread.

2219  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Low end systems for EQ II on: November 11, 2004, 07:30:22 PM
AMD 2100xp (~1.6 ghz)
Radeon 9800 pro
1 gig ram

Playable even on high settings.  However I turned it down to balanced/performance because I prefer high fps over graphic frills (although some of the frills look really good).
2220  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Last-minute pre-order... EQ2 or WoW? on: November 09, 2004, 09:54:12 PM
I don't see how WoW can possibly win on "immersion".  I was blown away when I hit Freeport in EQ2.  It was not unlike the first time logging into Kelethin in EQ1.  I don't see how cartoony graphics leads to more immersion.  Remember that we're not discussing artistic merit here.
2221  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Everquest 2 - first impressions on: November 09, 2004, 06:50:13 PM
A graphic whore's dream game.  I was able to play on high settings on my low-end machine (1.4 amd).  I hope this doesn't change drastically as server starts filling up.  Some of the scenery looks almost photo-realistic.  I'm excited just thinking of exploring the world because it is so beautiful (I think you even get xp for discovering new areas).

The game is very easy to pick up and play if you've played EQ1 because most of the controls/commands are the same.  I like that you can get a home right off the bat without any time investment like collecting money etc.  It is really easy to add deco and interactive objects to your home.

Those are my impressions after about 5hrs of play.  I was a huge EQ1 fan and so far I am really excited.  Of course it will take some time to figure out long term potential and it's hard to give an objective view during the typical euphoria felt at mmrpg launches.
