2081  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Which to buy; Winning 11 or FIFA? on: February 16, 2007, 09:24:51 PM
I think WE is better for casual fans.  If you were so inclined you could go through the training lessons and learn the tricks.  It's almost like an RPG where you are building up your skills in RL as opposed to your toons.  FIFA doesn't have any such mode.  There's more replay value in WE because of the difficulty settings.  I'm not even that great at soccer games and I beat FIFA 07 at the highest difficulty on my first try.  It's not even funny how badly I lose at the highest difficulty in WE.

If you get FIFA 07, don't buy the 360 version, it's terrible with most features stripped.  PC version was much better but I'm not sure about Xbox (I think Xbox is identical to PC so it should be fine).

It's the tight control which still sets WE apart from FIFA in my opinion.  No matter what level soccer fan you are, everyone can appreciate that.
2082  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Which version of Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 are you buying? on: February 13, 2007, 06:49:22 PM
I got the 360 version cause the graphics are gimped in PS2 (all PS2 games in general).  All the dropped features suck but I don't really care because all I really want is Master League and Online play.  e.g. Challenge training was awesome but I've done it already in a couple of iterations of WE and don't need to do it again.  If this is your first WE game, then yes, you're missing out on some really cool features that made the WE series so great.

I switched RT and RB but I kinda like how LT/LB is setup by default which cause a problem for kicking the ball forward however (RT+LB with my setup which is awkward).  I think I'll end up switching LT/LB as well.
2083  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Resistance vs Gears of War - FIGHT! on: November 22, 2006, 07:08:18 PM
I haven't played Resistance yet but I think GoW is just an average FPS.  The single player game has no variety.  Here I am nearing the end of the game and I'm still using the same tactics and gun I used at the start of the game.  If there is a story, I'm still looking for it.

From what I've read about Resistance, it sounds like it is more my kind of FPS (variety of weapons being one reason).

I got the PC version of FIFA 07 and I'm liking it a lot.  You can definetly do stepovers, fakeshots and various other skill moves.  Online play has been smooth as well contrary to what a lot of reviews say (despite the fact that I'm mostly playing against europeans and I'm in N. America).  The only thing I don't like about online play is that the control setup can't be changed (I prefer the Winning 11 setup) so you can't do moves like double team on defence since that only works in the new analog (i.e. WE) control scheme.  Graphics don't look much improved over FIFA 06 and it seems like this is a port of the Xbox/PS2 engine.  If the 360 version has the same game mechanics but with improved graphics, I'll be very happy.
2086  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: FIFA 07 demo discussion on: October 12, 2006, 03:02:55 PM
IGN review (of I think PC version) says you can do stepovers.

Hmm demo on marketplace?  So I take it you are talking about the 360 version?  It's supposed to be quiet different from all other versions so I hear.

Fifa 2006 and Germany 2006 had stepovers and other tricks.  I thought it had fake pass/shot too but I may be confused.  I have a feeling they may have rushed the whole ball physics thing and couldn't figure out how to incorporate those move with the new system.

IGN gives Fifa 07 5/5 Stars.  Watch out WE!

FIFA series is poised to close the gap on its long-standing rival to the narrowest of margins, thanks to the much-improved football game that is FIFA 07.

Which version?

The 360 version apparently has no real leagues, because EA nerfed the player/team amounts because they simply don't have room to fit them all in.

PS2 version.  I think Xbox/PC version are basically the same game.  I dunno about 360 since it's not out yet.

The game is out for DS, PSP, PC, PS2 and Xbox.  Anyone have impressions?  This looks like an improved version of FIFA 2006 but using the same engine.  I'm probably going to hold out for the 360 version (which I hear is a totally new game built from the ground up) but might be tempted by the DS/PSP versions.

Question about GW in general.  Have they changed the drop mechanics at all.  I have not played since before Factions came out.  I liked the PVP, but the single player portion bored me to tears.  Do the MOBs drop interesting items now?

I'm a big fan of Diablo like loot whore gameplay but because of how PvP works, they are somewhat limited on what they can do to make it more exciting in GW (because they don't want to put PvP only players at a disadvantage).  They did add more coloured rare/boss loot which makes it somewhat more exciting.  I think the more exciting "loot" is actually not items but skills.  It's fun trying to hunt down as many skills as possible.  Also a lot of people are hooked on farming because you can get unique looking armor and items this way but it's mostly just for aesthetics.

So I downloaded FIFA 2007 demo for PC (360 version still seems to be a month or so till release).  I don't normally play sports games on PC and I have no idea how the FIFA series is on PC.  I've only played 1 game so far and I didn't notice anything cool or new about this version.  It almost seems like this game was developed by different team than the xbox 360 team because the graphics look like a big step back from Germany 2006.  I'm going to reserve judgement until I play it on the 360.

I will second the whole horrible menu options.  Game play is top notch though.  You really have to be a soccer fan though.  The game can be VERY unforgiving.  If you dont know much about real soccer, you prolly wont do well either.  FIFA is arcade soccer.  WE, is more sim soccer.  I love the game, I buy the new one every year, and I still suck at it.

I disagree.  I play 4 player games a lot with my friends who only watched a few worldcup games and they love it.  Play at 2 stars and you definetly don't need to be a soccer expert.  That's one of the great things about WE.

I also disagree FIFA is an arcade game.  It's more arcady than WE but 2006 has come a long way since previous FIFA titles.  It's basically copying WE game mechanics and controls so obviously they are also trying to move towards realism.  With 2007 I hear good things about ball physics so I am looking forward to trying it out.
2098  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: NHL 2k7 demo's up (presenting 2kSports, the new EA) on: September 11, 2006, 08:03:22 PM
This is more of a general question but what is it with hockey games never looking like an actual game of hockey?  We just get incremental increase in player details and animation but if you compare an actual game to a real life game it just seems off.  Compared to another sport for example soccer, the current games actually play out very close to a real game of soccer (e.g. in Winning 11).  To give one example of what I mean, I played the 2k7 demo and it's very easy to get a clear shot on net while in real life it's hard enough to even get a low percentage shot in most of the time.  So is the EA game any better in this regard?
2099  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fifa 07 or Pro Evolution 6 (Winning 11) on: September 11, 2006, 07:35:36 PM
I think people shouldn't be put off by the "realism" factor in WE.  Just from gameplay perspective, I think WE is one of the best sports game ever made.  It is very easy to play and you can enjoy fun matches at 2 stars without learning the more advanced controls.

Fifa is definetly getting a lot better.  I play Fifa Worldcup and the latest WE (backwards compatible) on my 360.  Fifa is just leaps and bounds ahead in terms of graphics.  The thing I hate about Fifa is what seems to be dynamic adjustments of AI and goalie stats based on the current score (e.g. it's a lot easier to get a goal if you are losing).  Ball physics are still bad in this version but I hear Fifa 2007 fixes this.

2103  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Top Spin 2 (x360) on: April 05, 2006, 02:57:04 PM
I wonder if the somewhat average graphics have a little to do with the overall lighting.  I played in a tournament where half the court was enveloped in bright sunlight.  When the players walked out into the sun, it looked as good as a real TV broadcast.  That was the first time I was impressed with the graphics in Top Spin 2.

The game is really starting to grow on me especially after I figured out how to control my shots.  I have not touched the safe shot since.  I went from missing a majority of the shots to only missing when I'm going for those clipping the line shots.  Definetly a lot more precision and control involved in Top Spin 2 over TS1.  Still can only hit the risk serve about 5% of the time, maybe I need more points in focus or something.

I just broke the top 50 ranking and my trainers disappared.  It keeps saying training not available, did I hit my cap already?  Anyone experience this?  I would really like to know the amount of gold and silver stars we get so I can plan my character better.

Oh, as all the reviews have already mentioned, my 2 games on Live were silky smooth.

Something that was sorely lacking in Top Spin was the ability to save between sets because they can go on for quiet long.  Sadly, it doesn't appear to be in Top Spin 2 either.

No Top Spin 2 for me, then. Unbelievable.

Apparently I was mistaken, you can save between matches in tournaments.  Still have to check it out but that would be a really welcome change.
2105  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Top Spin 2 (x360) on: March 31, 2006, 07:09:34 PM
Only played a little of career but it seems to be very close to previous incarnations.  Train in mini games, buy apparel from sponsors, rise up the ranks.  There are a lot of options when creating your guy (facial features etc.) but that's pretty standard these days.  Each character has a bunch of stats for customization.  It's a little confusing.  I couldn't find any information in the manual or in-game what all the stats mean.  What is "Focus"?  Does it raise my magic damage? smile  The menu makes it a little easier to navigate than before, no more spinning the globe looking for what you need.

Something that was sorely lacking in Top Spin was the ability to save between sets because they can go on for quiet long.  Sadly, it doesn't appear to be in Top Spin 2 either.
2106  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Top Spin 2 (x360) on: March 31, 2006, 05:39:58 PM
Got this yesterday and played for an hour and half.  I prefer the TopSpin line over Virtua Tennis because of the greater shot selection and somewhat more realism.

Initial impressions: well right off the bat the graphics are disappointing.  They are not bad but it's not much of an improvement and it seems like even an Xbox can almost render this level of graphics.  What is worse is the inexcusable amount of load times between menus and matches.  Um, I think the 360 is a little bit more powerful than a PSP and the amount of graphics resources in this game pale in comparision to a game like Oblivion.

The good: It's early but I think I like the new counter/risk shot system.  I didn't like the cheese factor of the old risk system.  It's also a lot easier to hit the ball out of bounds which I like because it's more realistic.  The roster of players is much better than TopSpin 1.

I haven't tried it on Live yet or looked at the achievements.

Overall the reviews out so far seem pretty accurate.  I wouldn't recommend this game unless you are a big tennis fan.  But if you've never played Top Spin then it might be worth a try because it seems to be a slight improvement (and Top Spin imo is a great tennis game).  I'm pretty disappointed that they didn't make a bigger leap especially since I think it was created by a new development team.  It's mostly just a rehash of the old code with some new stuff thrown in.

UM is there any better way to control your character than point or click? I think the game is okay, but I'd like a tutorial or something, anything to let me learn how to use the game. I can't even move windows around, you can close them and resize them but not move them? I dunno, right now I can see why they are giving it away.

Hold shift down to drag windows.

It seems that hardcore PvPers and SB veterans have learned to look past the shortcomings of the game.  It is a bit of a gem in the rough.  I hope they make a sequel with as elaborate a PvP environment but better graphics/UI.  Point and click movement works in a game like Diablo but when you move your line of sight to be optimal in a game such as this, it doesn't really work out.

I'm having fun with SB.  Finally I can afford to 2-box! smile  While I was doing multi-boxing, I had an idea.  Everyone keeps saying how stale the MMRPG genre is, how about allowing them to play more than one character?  Can't find a group?  No problem.  Of course it would have to have strong AI settings/scripts to help with controlling multi-toons.  Anyway I'm sure there's a good game that can be made with this basic concept, it just requires a bit more thought to iron out the new issues that would arise.

The AI lacks for it to be a solid SP game.  When you go out with a party of four (you and three hench) they just attack what you're currently attacking, and/or heal you.  They don't have any target logic, nor will they stay on a target to occupy it until it's dead.

Select a target and press Ctrl-Spacebar.  They will stay on that target.  The AI is pretty good IMO.  I can't think of any other party based RPG with better AI in real time combat.  The healers are quiet good at prioritizing heals and in-combat rezzes.

As to playing it single player, I've finished the game with 2 characters and there are 3-4 missions near the end where it's almost impossible to complete without a group.  A lot depends on your build, some classes are easier to solo than others (and by solo I mean with henchmen).

I like the fact that I can actually be a powerful character in GW just playing solo as opposed to WoW where you will be a pathetic wimp compared to the raiders.

2118  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DOA4 - training mode help on: January 03, 2006, 04:08:25 PM
I heard you can unlock something by completing the training in Sparring mode but I can't finish it with any character!

Does anyone have some tips for this?  I usually fly through the first 70 or so moves and then hit one that just won't succeed.  I don't think it's my lack of co-ordination skills but rather not understanding what is required.

I'll try to give an example:

P=punch, K=kick

Character: the top left most chick (kasumi?)
Move Description:

Line 1: Otoko(?) G+P (throw)
Line 2: / (diagonal top right)  P, G+P

So it seems from line 2 that I'm supposed to counter a high attack and then throw?  However the AI just sits there.

When I watch the demo the following sequence happens:
1. She does a high slap/uppercut (away from the enemy)
2. Does a high counter move (although the opponent is still dormant)
3. Then grabs the opppoenent gives her a good yank while moving behind them

#1 looks like the same move with left trigger (P+K?)
#2 looks like the 1st move on Line 2 (diagonal top right + P counter)
#3 I don't know how to do this

So what am I doing wrong?  The listed commands don't execute the move showed in the demo.

I have similar problems with almost every other character I've tried.  I can be more specific about the exact move number when I get home and on my 360.

Think of the off-side line as always moving depening on the position of the last defender.   If you draw a line perpendicular to the defender closest to the goalie, that is the off-side line.  There is a defensive strategy called the off-side trap where the defenders move up and try to put the attacking team off-side.  It wouldn't be possible with static off-side lines.  The rest of the world LOVES idiotic rules! slywink
