2041  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: FIFA 08 demo on Live/PSN today 9/13 on: September 14, 2007, 03:10:20 PM
I'm disappointed with the demo.  Graphics look about the same except the pitch looks better.  At least the controls are not laggy like 07 but they are nowhere near as tight as PES.  Might be worth it though for the amount of teams you get this time.

LD, the direction you flick the stick determines where the puck will go.  As you would expect.

This could be misleading because it's not the stick you are flicking (right analog) that affects the direction.  It's the left analog ("skates") stick that affects direction assuming you have auto-aim off.  It's pretty easy to test out in the practice mode.

I'm hearing that it's the same laggy controls of FIFA 07 which is disheartening.  I hated FIFA 07 but really enjoyed UEFA 07.  Hoping 08 is more like the latter; I'll give the demo a whirl when I get home.

Any big new features this year?  I love the new create a play in NHL 08.  It would fit right in with soccer.

Played one game with pr0ner last night.  It was close until he scored an own goal slywink

Anyone else want to play, gamertag is skystride.  I'm kinda torn between this game and Blue Dragon.  Both are great, hard to decide which to load up.

Strangely enough the big stores in Canada (Toronto) like BestBuy didn't have it yesterday.  But my local non-chain video game store had copies.  Usually the other way around.
2047  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: NHL 08 on: September 12, 2007, 03:23:35 PM
I'm enjoying the game so far.  I was ranked in the 100s last night.  It's all downhill from here.  I always end up buying hockey games (cause I love watching hockey) and hardly ever playing.  Might be different this time, I had the "just one more game" addiction going last night.  Graphics are a huge improvement from NHL 07.  It might be small details but overall it makes a big difference.

I can't imagine them not releasing a 360 demo.  That would be a first.

I think Diablo 1 was current-tech high-end.  Pre-rendered models was the shit and it looked amazing.  But that was back in the day when you didn't really need cutting edge hardware for any game.
2055  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 4 player split/same screen play in current and upcoming games? on: July 17, 2007, 05:50:07 PM
Rainbow 6 Vegas only supports 2 players but it is a lot of fun split screen.  There's a bunch of XBLA titles that support 4 players.  Also sports game like soccer work great with 2-4 players.  There's more: Marvel Alliance, Lego Star Wars etc.

I find myself playing UEFA Champion's League 2006-2007 a lot more than WEPES2007.  It's a little surprising since I usually favor the WE and I absolutely hate FIFA 07.  It's got much better graphics and goal counts are not too unrealistic.
2058  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Another round of Rainbow Six on: July 06, 2007, 02:51:25 PM
Good communication goes a long way.  We were playing Streets 3v3 against Harkonis and we won almost every time.  I forget who was playing "Commander" but he had 0 kills but was key to our victory.

My suggestion would be to avoid conquest mode with 3v3.  With 3 capture points it mostly becomes a 1v1 match with little teamwork.

I thought the main reason we don't have any sims on console is because of the controller interface (limited to only a few joystick buttons but a real sim requires a keyboard and/or HOTAS setup).  So now that they can include a Saitekish HOTAS setup with a game (at a reasonable price I assume), why don't we see some real sims on a console?  Why are the makers of IL2, Lock-On, Falcon, MSFS etc. not considering an approach like this?  It might be a great way to revive a dying genre.

I know a driving-sim is not the best thing to compare to, but Forza 2 is a good example where a sim is kicking butt over it's arcadish competition.

2063  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Any coop games on the 360 on 1 system? on: June 11, 2007, 09:16:29 PM
Yes, R6 Vegas has split-screen co-op.  I had the attitude of your friend about console FPS until I played this game.   The only downside is you can't split-screen online with R6.  You can in GRAW but I think you need multi-accounts. I play a lot of split-screen co-op and the two games that my friends enjoyed the most were R6 and Winning 11.

That free sidescrolling shooter on Arcade is fun too with 2 or more players.
2064  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Car porn (Forza 2) on: June 08, 2007, 05:26:01 PM
Money is an issue for some of us who don't consistently place 1st or 2nd in multiplayer races.  The Elan which Hark says is cheap cost me about 70k to upgrade to D400 and I had saved about 120k at that point.  I'm not really keen on buying a PT Cruiser.

I did get an idea though last night when I ran an endurance race with a hired driver.  I made about 60k profit.  I think I should be able to run this a couple of times especially when I can't actively play to get a steady flow of cash.  Is there any penalty (cash wise) for repeating already completed races?

Second complaint-if we are going to race and have it have a semblance of competitive, we need to eliminite the obviously too powerful cars like the...uh...Elan? Whatever it was called-there is just not point having two people in that car and 5 in others getting lapped. It's pointless. I also think that as mentioned earlier in this thread the occasional class/car races would be absolutely awesome. A fleet of identical cars could be boring, but hey-lets gauge driving skill right? Either way I suck too much to be a factor, but figured these were some ideas for moving forward-definitely will be playing online and definitely will be purchasing this one.

I sort of agree with this.  The rich keep getting richer by winning the big prizes.  Guess what, their car is going to pwn C class and higher too because they can afford better.  While the losers get 0-100 credits per race.  They are much better of earning money in single player.  I really don't know how to prevent this though since I'd hate to be the Car Nazi dictating which cars are allowed and which are not.

I like the Halos' single players to a point, but despise the Multiplayer. So as usual, with all the hop-T-D-hoppers out there I have no interest in this game. Ill stick to Gears and R6 thumbsup.
The funny thing is I played the hell out of Tribes and Unreal and loved them. so why dose this game not appeal to me?

I never gave Halo MP a fair shot but doesn't it seem like a watered down version of Tribes?  I really wish there was a new Tribes like game.  Back in the day, not everyone used Voice-comm but now it would totally rock in a 360 everyone-has-a-headset environment.  I guess no game has yet replicated the magic of Tribes for me.

Count me underwhelmed as well with the graphics.  I've been playing PGR a lot lately and the demo looks better but but not by a large margin.  It's nothing like the huge difference you see in launch FPS vs current FPS.

Still had fun with the game though and it is a day 1 purchase for me because of the gameplay.

2073  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Virtual Tennis 3 anyone? on: March 30, 2007, 08:45:36 PM
VT3 is a great game of pong.  It's not going for realism and that's fine, that's what VT has always been.  It's easy to pickup and play for noobs.  You only need to use 2 buttons.  If you want more complexity, try the Topspin series.  The last version used all the buttons on the controller and combinations of them.  When I play Topspin 2 with my non hardcore gamer friends, the scores resemble 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.  Suffice it to say that they don't really enjoy this and hence get bored of it.  When I played VT3 with same friends, they can actually beat me.  Instead of memorizing some tricky combination button, all they need to learn is to position players properly.

I have yet to try the party mini games co-op, they could be interesting.  The game is really too easy in tour mode early on (I don't think there's a difficulty setting).  I breezed through every match until I ranked higher than 100.  At this point, I did need to focus on training a little but it's still easy.

I tried only a few live games and they were fun.  I hear that the unlocked toons are uber and usable on live so there are people racking up ranked wins with these.

PS. try watching a live game in overhead view and you will totally get my pong comment slywink

I have both the PC and 360 version of FIFA 07.  The PC version doesn't have as much control lag as the 360 version.  It sounds like the Xbox version you have is closer to the PC version than 360.  Believe me, I'm not even exaggerating one little bit about the 360 version, literally it will execute actions 5 seconds after you hit it, absolutely terrible.

It's the tight control which still sets WE apart from FIFA in my opinion.  No matter what level soccer fan you are, everyone can appreciate that.
Do you think I'd be just as well off with the XBox version of WE 9?
Or is the tighter control you refer to a combination of the PS2's dual shock controller and improvements in WEPE 2007?

Tight control as in how responsive the players are to your control input (regardless of controller type).  The lack thereof in the 360 version of FIFA 07 totally killed the game for me (you see your players execute an action literally 5 seconds after you pressed the button).
2076  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Which to buy; Winning 11 or FIFA? on: February 16, 2007, 09:24:51 PM
I think WE is better for casual fans.  If you were so inclined you could go through the training lessons and learn the tricks.  It's almost like an RPG where you are building up your skills in RL as opposed to your toons.  FIFA doesn't have any such mode.  There's more replay value in WE because of the difficulty settings.  I'm not even that great at soccer games and I beat FIFA 07 at the highest difficulty on my first try.  It's not even funny how badly I lose at the highest difficulty in WE.

If you get FIFA 07, don't buy the 360 version, it's terrible with most features stripped.  PC version was much better but I'm not sure about Xbox (I think Xbox is identical to PC so it should be fine).

2077  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Which version of Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 are you buying? on: February 13, 2007, 06:49:22 PM
I got the 360 version cause the graphics are gimped in PS2 (all PS2 games in general).  All the dropped features suck but I don't really care because all I really want is Master League and Online play.  e.g. Challenge training was awesome but I've done it already in a couple of iterations of WE and don't need to do it again.  If this is your first WE game, then yes, you're missing out on some really cool features that made the WE series so great.

I switched RT and RB but I kinda like how LT/LB is setup by default which cause a problem for kicking the ball forward however (RT+LB with my setup which is awkward).  I think I'll end up switching LT/LB as well.
2078  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Resistance vs Gears of War - FIGHT! on: November 22, 2006, 07:08:18 PM
I haven't played Resistance yet but I think GoW is just an average FPS.  The single player game has no variety.  Here I am nearing the end of the game and I'm still using the same tactics and gun I used at the start of the game.  If there is a story, I'm still looking for it.

From what I've read about Resistance, it sounds like it is more my kind of FPS (variety of weapons being one reason).

I got the PC version of FIFA 07 and I'm liking it a lot.  You can definetly do stepovers, fakeshots and various other skill moves.  Online play has been smooth as well contrary to what a lot of reviews say (despite the fact that I'm mostly playing against europeans and I'm in N. America).  The only thing I don't like about online play is that the control setup can't be changed (I prefer the Winning 11 setup) so you can't do moves like double team on defence since that only works in the new analog (i.e. WE) control scheme.  Graphics don't look much improved over FIFA 06 and it seems like this is a port of the Xbox/PS2 engine.  If the 360 version has the same game mechanics but with improved graphics, I'll be very happy.
