I got to level 10 and tried one match of PvP and it was really fun.

Also a big part of the class mechanic was locked until level 10, at least for the Cleric.  I wonder if that's true for all of the classes?  If so, then you really don't get a feel for the class until after level 10.
122  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic (dev posts, news items, fan sites etc.) on: April 15, 2013, 03:19:12 AM
Multiplayer just kills the immersion since you have other people doing the same quest as you competing for the same drops/kills and dragging around clones of story characters that are supposed to be unique to the world.

I think maybe the writer is making a comment on all the sexism talk lately (ie. tropes vs. women video series) and giving extreme examples he/she is expecting to hear about Bioshock.

Yeah, the writer actually states that he doesn't think Bioshock is sexist.  The only problem is some of his arguments are just plain wrong.

Major spoiler alert if you read that article on sexism before finishing the game.

As a Star Wars fan, this game depresses me.  It turned out to be less Star Warsy than SWG.  At least in SWG I felt somewhat in character in what felt like an evolving world.  All that money they spent in TOR should have been spent on establishing a great Star Wars single player RPG franchise because it just doesn't work as a MMO.

128  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Smite on: April 10, 2013, 10:34:26 PM
I played one match recently.  It still feels a bit floaty, like you are driving the gods.  I wish control/animation were more like Guild Wars 2.  Gameplay seems suited for beginners to MOBA but I'm not sure if it has enough to offer to LOL/DOTA veterans.  I'm still waiting to see the next evolution of the genre instead of the mostly clones that seem to be coming out.
129  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Smite on: April 10, 2013, 05:09:11 PM
Is there no jungler role in this game?

You don't really notice when playing but when watching someone else's video, it becomes obvious how intrusive the UI is.  A big line in the middle of the screen with range indicators?  Is this a fantasy action game or a tank sim?

For $25, it's worth the risk for me.  I don't have a lot of faith either but nobody else is making PvP only MMOs.
131  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Neverwinter on: April 09, 2013, 10:07:33 PM
I'm in with the $60 founders pack.  I didn't really have good impressions when I played a beta weekend but I only gave it about 20 mins total.  Watching videos on youtube and reading some impressions convinced me.

I think it was the idea of Diablo or DOTA/MOBA like combat that appeals to me the most.  It also seems like this will be easy to play casually (it's F2P, dungeons are not serious time commitments, don't have to relearn 20 slot hotbar when I come back from taking a break).  And of course the user generated content could be pretty neat.
132  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/Ps3] Bioshock: Infinite - Impressions Incoming! Impressions pg 6 on: April 08, 2013, 02:37:08 PM
Maybe I am desensitized but I didn't find BI gory at all.  After finishing it I went back to Tomb Raider.  That is so much worse in terms of gore (not that I mind).  BI is just too cartoonish (a bit like Dishonored) for the violence to resonate much.  On the other hand falling onto dead bodies and watching head roll around in TR is a bit creepy.

I hope this game is good but I don't have much faith in Marc Jacobs.  A guy who used to say he doesn't play the PvP part of the game much back in Warhammer Online interviews and now he is a self proclaimed PvP guru?

Alignment is not important and can be ignored completely. The combat isn't so challenging that you will ever need any specific monster for a particular boss fight. The mite that you get at the beginning of the game is more than sufficient but you can replace him with whatever your heart desires since it really won't make a difference. Basically, use what monsters that you like and don't fret about "combat efficiency."

This has not been my experience.  I wiped 5 times on a boss fight with a robot type mob.  Mite does no damage to it.  I had a lowbie familiar that cast thunder attacks and that was doing decent damage to it but would die in 1 or 2 hits.  Olivers spells did less damage but it's so easy to go OOM.  I barely got by and used up all my provisions in the process (prior to this fight I barely use provisions in fights).  Party members kept dying easily if I missed timing my "All Defend".  I'm playing on normal.

141  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3] Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch on: February 06, 2013, 06:13:40 PM
Regarding point 5, you also have to consider alignment (which will be explained later).  The main character doesn't have an alignment (sun, moon etc).  Sun does more damage to Moon.  Moon > Star and Star > Sun.  There's also element type (fire, water etc.) resistances but that's harder to judge in combat.  You can check it in the beastiary outside combat.

I highly recommend leveling up some caster type familiars that have magic type that Oliver doesn't have access to immediately like water attack or thunder attack.  I didn't do this and nearly paid for it at a boss fight who was resistant to most of my attacks.

What new commands do you get when your 3rd party member joins?

Yeah I'm pretty sure I got my tactics options when the chick joined.

All out defence and offence were not mentioned until later.  At least now I can block boss attacks with other members.
143  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3] Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch on: February 04, 2013, 04:28:36 PM
It's weird that they don't give you the two tactical commands as soon as you get your first party member.  These commands are only unlocked a bit after the third party member joins.

I'm still using the mite in almost every fight, he's just so OP because of his levels and the amount of food I've given him.  Hard to get another familiar to catchup.

Can anyone explain the mechanic on timing your attacks?  It said something about attacking when some indicator turns blue to stun the enemy but I haven't been able to figure it out.
147  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3] Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch on: January 30, 2013, 06:36:17 PM
I haven't had a lot of time to play, I'm only up to level 10 but I'm still really enjoying it.  Yeah it's refreshing to see a protagonist like Oliver.

My only minor complaints:
- Why do we have to level up a new familiar from level 1?  You get something new and it basically sucks until you keep it in your inventory for a while.
- They should have had a quick reload option instead of having to go back to the title screen if you decide not to pay the money cost.

Also a nice to have would have been the ability to check enemy stats during combat (sort of like Persona games).

I've barely played it, just up to the first boss but I'm loving it so far.  That Wizard's Guide is so good, I really wish I had a physical copy.  How do missing pages work if you have the physical copy?  Is it worthwhile translating the code?  That seems annoying to do.

They do seem to be skimping on voice acting but my imagination is doing a pretty good job of reading the text in the accent particularly since the text is written in a way where the intonations are pretty obvious (well for that one character anyway).

The more awesome the CGI trailer, the more likely it is to fail.

e.g.
Warhammer Online - pretty good trailer
Star Wars: The Old Republic - incredible trailer(s)
DC Universe Online - everyone was raving about the CGI trailer

GW2 - in-engine trailer, game is not a flop

ESO trailer is pretty darn good CGI, it is doomed! icon_twisted

I'm now technically under NDA so I can't say much about the game, but I'm curious why they would swap genres to MOBA where the competition is presently really fierce.

It's in their FAQ.  They think MOBA is like the new FPS or RTS.  No one says "competition is too fierce, why make a new FPS?" even though there are way more FPS out there than MOBA.  That's their reasoning.

I think there's lots of room to evolve MOBA.  Not sure if spawning quests is that evolutionary though.  This is why DOTA 2 pisses me off.  Valve is such a talented team that could really do something fresh with moba but instead they just make a DOTA clone.

158  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: The next major MMO on: January 03, 2013, 09:24:04 PM
Good class design can make holy trinity gameplay a lot of fun.  Like for example the Warrior Priest in WAR.  You have to be in melee to power your heals.  Somewhat similar to the Disciple in Vanguard who is a monk that has to perform melee combos to heal.  Another option is to have a more arcady approach like Tera.  It seems that is what Elder Scrolls is going for.

While I thought GW2 combat system is pretty brilliant on paper, I didn't think group dynamics were that much better in dungeons in practice.  I've had more fun with the holy trinity system.  I missed the complexity of builds from GW1, something was lost in the dumbing down/simplification of skills.  Trait system was pretty cool but in the end you are still limited to the relatively small number of weapon skills.

The 2013 MMOs preview portion is here:
http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/01/01/2013-preview/5/

Just took a look at that list.

I'm interested in Elder Scrolls if it's being developed by ex-Warhammer/DAOC  folks. I really enjoyed WAR even though it ultimately failed.  They brought a lot of cool ideas to the table like open groups, public quests, fun instanced scenarios etc.

I'm also interested in Everquest.  EQ2 turned out to be really good eventually after a few patches/expansions.  The content and variety in EQ2 is pretty much unparalleled.  I also love EQ lore since I started playing MMOs with EQ1.

I might be interested in the Blizzard MMO even though I hate WoW.  There is just too little information right now.

And I guess there might be a few surprises from that list that we will have to wait and see.
160  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: The next major MMO on: January 03, 2013, 04:19:52 PM
I'm interested in a MMO that goes back to the roots and has heavy focus on grouping.  Make soloing next to impossible but make grouping easy.  Include level scaling both ways so people don't feel left behind.  I'm tired of every single MMO having easy soloing.  It just removes any sort of danger from the world since 90% of the content is soloable.

I think Vanguard had a pretty good balance.  There were lots of interesting areas to explore but it was pretty difficult and sometimes impossible to do solo for many classes.  Sure you could solo to max in VG but then you miss out on a lot of cool group areas.  It seems modern MMOs make solo content the focus and throw in some group stuff.  I'd like to see it be the other way round.
