81  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Getting Back Into Board Games on: March 11, 2013, 02:25:33 AM
Ok, so my wife doesn't like video games and I'd love to be able to include her in my gaming interest. Enter board games.

This weekend I bought Ticket to Ride and Forbidden Island. Both were very easy to learn but I had to go over the rules quite a few times before she got grasp of them. Once she did we had a blast playing. Can you guys recommend any other games along the lines of those two (coop or competitive) that aren't overly complicated to learn?

I just ordered the Lord of the Rings LCG but that will be something my son and I play I'm sure.

Finished up Tomb Raider yesterday so I'll likely start up Bit Trip Runner 2.
83  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Age of Empires 2 HD Announced on: March 08, 2013, 07:01:52 PM
I'd be interested for nostalgia's sake but not at $20. Always thought RoN was the better RTS of the two.
84  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Tomb Raider on: March 07, 2013, 04:49:41 PM
Finished in 10 hours at 73% completion. It's a fun ride but my interest started to wane about mid way through after the honeymoon phase with the presentation.

Video games are interactive movies for the most part now. I've accepted that. However, once the spectacle wears thin, we need some solid writing to keep us enthralled!
85  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Tomb Raider on: March 06, 2013, 08:47:21 PM
I'm at 37% after roughly 4 hours play. Haven't been going out of my way to hunt down the hidden items so I'm sure that would have added a significant amount of play to my total.

One thing is for sure, though. The game is ridiculously easy. I've died maybe twice in combat so far playing on Normal.

I've heard this one has a significant reliance on quick-time events, is that true?  Would you say that it would be too annoying for somebody that generally hates QTEs?

There's been a few QTE sequences a few hours in. I'm not a fan of them myself but they haven't bothered me. If you happen to fail one it restarts you a few seconds before them.

This game. It's like Resident Evil 4 and Uncharted had a love child. The atmosphere is incredible. Reminds me a little of the show Lost.

For those that have tried the multiplayer, is it worth resubbing to Live to play?
88  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Tomb Raider on: March 06, 2013, 03:52:45 AM
These Ghost Hunter tokens are damn hard to see. Kinda nice you can fast travel back to previous areas to item hunt.
89  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Tomb Raider on: March 06, 2013, 01:36:44 AM
Finally sitting down to play it now. About a hour in and I'm blown away. The visuals are amazing and I'm digging the game play mechanics thus far.

This could be a contender!

Got lucky and someone canceled their pre order at Game stop so I was able to grab a copy of Etrian Odyssey. Best Buy told me they weren't even carrying it in-store. Guess it'll be another rare Atlus release.

Another argument for digital!  I downloaded it this morning without having to go to any stores to be told they don't have it or I should have preordered it.

I would have bought it on the Eshop but I wanted the art book (hardly an art book, a leaflet more like) and the soundtrack.

Maybe some Alpha Centauri with a bit of Heroes of M&M 3. Lots of catching up to do on Netflix.
93  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PC/PS3/WiiU]Aliens Colonial Marines on: February 17, 2013, 07:02:41 PM
Rented this from Redbox and my son and I finished it I'm coop in about five hours. Don't really have anything much to say that the dismal reviews haven't already said.

We did have a lot of laughs throughout the campaign over the various glitches and sheer absurdity pf the story and voice acting. Tried out the multiplayer a couple of times but it's just as awful.
94  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: iPhone/iTouch app and game thread on: February 15, 2013, 12:48:44 AM
Thanks, wonder. I grabbed a couple of those as well as Infinity Blade which is free on the App Store. I'm so in love with this thing.  eek
95  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: iPhone/iTouch app and game thread on: February 14, 2013, 07:50:23 PM
So I spoiled myself on Valentines and bought an Ipad 4. Never owned an Apple device in my life but it felt like it was time to join the club. What are some must have apps to get started with?
96  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (02/12) on: February 11, 2013, 08:22:24 PM
A new Aliens game developed by Gearbox? Would have been an impulse purchase before the flood of negative opinions from people that got it early. Take a look at some of the game play videos people have made up on YouTube. It looks pretty bad. frown
97  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: Fire Emblem: Awakening coming Feb. 4 2013 to North America - Finally on: February 06, 2013, 01:31:34 AM
Definitely an early goty contender for me. Up to Chapter 5 on Normal/Classic and I have no complaints. A must have for fans of the series and it's probably the best one to jump into for newcomers with the addition of a casual mode.

The stylistic choice to having no feet on the characters is odd but it hardly interferes with my enjoyment. Hope this sells well so we continue to get them localized.
98  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (02/04) on: February 05, 2013, 12:52:45 AM
Fire Emblem for sure.
99  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Are You Stepping Into the Next Gen? on: February 01, 2013, 07:20:57 PM
I wish I could get into games on my phone. I'd save a ton of money. Most of them are horrendous to play due to the virtual control pad/buttons. I'll stick to my 3DS.
100  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Are You Stepping Into the Next Gen? on: February 01, 2013, 06:13:26 PM
I can't completely say at this point I won't get one of the two systems but I'm confident I'll wait until the first revision before jumping in.

My concerns are the continued focus on DLC and micro transactions. Will Microsoft continue to have a pay wall for multiplayer? Will games finally reach the point of being fully cinematic, play themselves affairs? I mainly play XBLA games right now with the occasional AAA release. I typically get more value from a $15 game than I do a $60 one that is essentially an interactive cut scene. I'm not sure I'm really interested in the current direction of modern video games.

Unfortunately I'm impulsive and a sucker for the latest and greatest gadgets I become bored with weeks after buying them. frown

Some local multiplayer with my son in Skulls of the Shogun and Minecraft.

9/10

After reading their review it seems to be a bit more in depth than I first thought. May end up biting for the local multi alone.
103  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Skulls of the Shogun on: January 30, 2013, 06:18:47 PM
I've played through the trial on XBLA a couple times today and I'm on the fence with it. While the hand drawn art and humorous dialog is charming, I'm unsure of its long term appeal. There really isn't a whole lot to it.

At five bucks as a mobile app, I'd definitely grab it but $15 seems a bit steep.
104  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (01/28) on: January 28, 2013, 07:57:47 PM
Skulls on XBLA.
105  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gaming Trend's Most Anticipated of 2013 on: January 25, 2013, 07:06:12 AM
Lots of great potential in that list. I'm really only interested in Bioshock Infinite and possibly Gta V but I'm sure I'll end up playing a few more of them at some point.
106  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/Ps3]Far Cry 3 Reviews are coming in! on: December 05, 2012, 02:38:46 AM
I'm totally enamored with this game. Gotta get up at 4 am for work but it's hard to stop playing. I think I've put in three hours already and it says I'm only 5% complete. Good stuff.

The gun sounds are sooooo  good.   icon_eek

I bought Halo 4 last week in hopes the MP would last me through the rest of the year but I don't care for it at all.

So.. BLOPS2.
108  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (10/29) on: October 30, 2012, 08:26:37 PM
Nada. Forza Horizon is keeping my attention nicely, at least until Halo next week.
109  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PC/PS3] XCOM: Enemy Unknown on: October 12, 2012, 08:32:00 PM
This is pretty much the best game of the generation. I've really been soured on gaming these past two years or so but then a game like this hits and reinvigorates my interest in the hobby.
110  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PS3/Wii] The Amazing Spider-Man - GT Review is up! on: June 26, 2012, 08:56:12 PM
Its pretty fun. Definitely a rental unless youre a big Spiderman fan. The Arkham games are obviously a huge influence for the developer.
111  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Are any of the comic superhero games good (other than Arkham)? on: June 26, 2012, 08:18:16 PM
The new Spiderman game is good. Not as good as the Arkham games but definitely worth renting at least.
112  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PS3]Ghost Recon Future Soldier on: June 12, 2012, 01:19:46 PM
I <3 this game. Both the campaign and multiplayer kick serious ass. Just wish they'd iron out the lag issues.
113  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] Prometheus (previously Alien the Prequel) on: June 08, 2012, 09:29:58 PM
Just got back from seeing it. I'm greatly disappointed with it as a big fan of the Alien films but I also thought it was a decent sci-fi film. Just temper your expectations and you'll likely enjoy it.

They just don't make movies like they used to.  mad
114  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Torchlight 2! on: May 20, 2012, 11:44:40 PM
I enjoyed the beta but it's no where near as good as Diablo 3. Too little too late I'm afraid. frown
115  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Diablo III --Impressions start on page 36 -- on: May 16, 2012, 08:24:29 PM
Level 15 on Monk now. I am IN LOVE with this game. I don't want to have to go back to work!
116  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Diablo III --Impressions start on page 36 -- on: May 16, 2012, 03:45:13 AM
Just got booted. Kinda urks me that Im being disconnected from a game Im playing in single player. Got to level 8 and I like it quite a bit but it's not grabbing me like the first two did. I may just chalk that up to my being older and less enthused with video games but I honestly feel like it's missing something. It's certainly far too streamlined and the voice acting/story is a little goofy.

Gonna try to go back in for a little more time with it...

...or not. Bnet is down.
117  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Diablo III --Impressions start on page 36 -- on: May 16, 2012, 02:02:55 AM
Just got home with a copy and Im chilling to the installation music. So pumped. Im a huge fan of the first two and I havent followed much of the thirds development nor played the beta. Going in a complete virgin.  Tongue
118  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XBLA]Minecraft on: May 10, 2012, 01:01:57 AM
Runs so much smoother on the 360. One of the reasons I abandoned playing it on PC was the constant stuttering. Drove me mad.

The addition of split screen is great.

I'm glad you're able to customize the UI. The default is far too busy. The 22nd can't get here quick enough. I want this game!

This is my early GOTY. Love it.
