82  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] Star Trek 2, AKA Star Trek Into Darkness on: February 09, 2013, 06:44:30 PM
I've been (stupidly) thinking about this. My operating assumption is that Nero and Crew, then (older) Spock id a time jump that splintered into a parallel uniververse. My problem is that I can't seem to make this fit with Starfleet before Kirk was born, things like the first war with the Romulans. And why would Vulcan culture allow (young) Spock to exhibit the emotions he does as a Starfleet instructor.

So my mind wonders: what if Nero/(older) Spock never traveled in linear time. They, instead, traveled into a closely parallel universe. One which had several differences before the major shift of Nero's arrival? Much like the Mirror Universe, that would allow for the same people, but different characters. (old) Spock couldn't know the future events with real certainty, and characters like Khan could be different enough to allow a new story, but still be recognizable. (old)Spock and (young) Spock could have a mentor relationship that would be based on (old) Spock's experience, not knowledge of the future.

Anyway, I think that explanation would free the writers up more. Anything that didn't fit is easily explained.

Aside: I'd love to see a movie/short based on the old short story of Shatner, Nimoy, and (I think) Kelly, being beamed up to the real Enterprise in an accident that had Kirk, Spock, and McCoy beamed to the set at Desilu productions. It's an old story, written before NextGen even was announced, probably before anyone thought of Phase II. I'd have to check on it.  I think the name was Strange Planet Revisited in the first Short Story collection. New Voyages, maybe?

That would imply that not only is the future of the timeline re-written, but also what we know about the past.

it looks like other things in the timeline were changed too for this version before Vulcan.  the original Kirk started Starfleet in 2250, while the new Kirk starts in 2255.  plus the Enterprise is only just being launched at the time of Nero's attack on Vulcan, so it never had Pike as captain for 11 years nor did Robert April act as the ships first captain.

looking at the history from Memory Alpha about Gary Mitchell:

Mitchell was an Academy friend of James T. Kirk, stemming back to the time then-lieutenant Kirk was serving as an instructor and Mitchell was a first-year cadet. That year, Mitchell aimed a "little blonde lab technician" towards Kirk as a means to distract his rigid instructor and, in turn, Kirk almost married her.

in the new Star Trek I don't believe Kirk ever reached LT before the Vulcan incident as they keep calling him a cadet instead of a LT while Spock is referred to as Commander.

tl:dr - it's a whole new world so don't rely on what happened before as a guideline.

If that's the case, why bother with the Nimoy/Spock tie-in?

to bring in the old geeks biggrin

Things had to start changing before Vulcan was destroyed. From the time Nero first appears during Kirk's birth. No Sam, no father, no progression up the ranks like a normal person smile  Kirk, Sulu, McCoy, Uhura, Checkov all in school at the same time.....  It goes on and on.

I just finished Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions for the Wii and may start up Arkham City soon. In other words, I won't be interested in a next gen until I am done with my backlog. (I still intend to play my unopened copy of Deus Ex for the pc someday)

No, new ones are not up AFAIK.

My daughter in law is a member of the SCA and loves Dragon*Con, Song of Fire and Ice, and will debate the type of Batman interpretation used in Brave and the Bold (she's wrong BTW).  Turns out, she does not read OOTS.

My question: should I just insist that she reads the web comic, or should I send out my copies of Start of Darkness and Origin of PCs to start her out?

Opinions solicited.

This seems to be the most approprate place to ask/post:

There is a persistant rumor about Netflix streaming 3d,  Since I am cheap, I have been trying to keep up and ran across this little tidbit:  Netflix 3D streaming is available through the PS3.

So with great excitment, I updated the PS3 and Netflix.  No 3d category.  Anyone else check this out?
89  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: X-Men:Days Of Future Past on: December 02, 2012, 02:50:17 PM
Days of Future Past as a 2 hr film.  I am expecting  "loosely adapted from".  But I still wish that the DC Animated films would be given more film time to flesh out some of the character parts when doing adaptations (like All Star Superman and Justice League : New Frontier)   So what do I know?
90  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Looks like we need a new PS3 on: November 25, 2012, 04:45:21 PM
Now I am curious.  I haven't used my ps3 for game sin a while so the data back up is not that important, BUT, if I had to get a new machine, how would I restore all the rock and dlc and exported songs?

My ps3 is fine, now I am just curious as to how that would work.

92  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: DISNEY buying LUCASFILM....More Star Wars coming... on: October 30, 2012, 11:12:51 PM
I liked John Carter. The movie, not the mismanaged marketing. I am sorry that sequels are not in the cards.  A TV series would work though with those priest guys as the antagonists.

I like several of the others also, but like any studio hit and miss. Surely Disney having Star Wars can't be any worse than what has happened to the movie franchise since (and including) Return of the Jedi

Re:DC animated  - the end of the Justic League series that tied up Batman Beyond was good too.

"You know, Bruce, you're not always RIGHT!"

The Marvel Animated I've seen are good, even going back to the X-Men series in the (80s? 90s?), the Dini-Timverse of the DC animated stuff (B:TAS, S:TAS, BBeyond, JLA/JL-Unlimited) was just so good.  Even the newer Direct to DVD movies.  That's why I shake my head in disbelief at the Live Action DC stuff.

Edited to say: Now I want to go get a DVD of Mask of the Phantasm!
94  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Warner Developing Justice League Movie? on: October 22, 2012, 04:17:45 AM
I think DCs deal is to only count the new Superman movie as a character that will be in the Justice League, then spin off other movies from that instead of going the Marvel/Disney route
95  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Warner Developing Justice League Movie? on: October 21, 2012, 11:14:26 PM
Having rewatched Mask of the Phantasm and Batman:Year One. Then thinking about Green Lantern : First Flight vs Green Lantern, I am not particularly looking forward to a new live action DC heroes movie. FWIW, I find the animated Batman much more enjoyable than the live action, even the Nolan stuff.

Just saw the opening ceremonies.  Enjoyed it, but I thought it went on too long.  either that or the rebroadcast had way too many commertial breaks.  The neat thing for me was that i got to watch it in 3d on the olympic 3d session.  The depth was very good, and the confetti with GB was floating out there.  Yes, I like my LG.  smile

Watched the Man of Steel trailer. Meh. I'll still catch the film, but I still say that the teaser for the 1978 movie had me more excited. Of course I was 18 back then and superheroes on the screen hadn't happened yet, but all it has was names and clouds. The logo coming up was all you needed.

So this has been picked up and is now being promoed.  Looks ok from the trailer, certainly better than Green Lantern (movie, not animated which, by the way, is much better, has other color lanterns, and does not take place in the Young Justice universe)

Any interest so far?

108  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Joss Whedon to direct 'The Avengers' on: May 10, 2012, 12:36:08 PM
Iwas thinking about necessary movies to see before the Avengers and I decided that none of them were necessary if you are comfortable with the whole Marvel thing.

(in reverse order)
Captain America - if you don't care about how SHIELD winds up with the mysterious power source, it's a Captain America origin story - a good one
Thor - despite it's flaws, the most necessary to see where this take on Loki comes from.
Iron Man 1,2 - origin and decent Iron Man story, but if you know the character, not much Avengers stuff

I left the Hulk movies for last because they require a statement about Ang Lee's Hulk (I am not a fan). The second Hulk movie by passes the origin. I liked it, also a decent Hulk story, but if you are not familiar with the character, the origin is dealt with in the first movie. If you are familiar, neither is a necessity to watch.

The "Avengers Initiative" is dealt with in exposition well enough in the Avengers film to get a handle on it.

Agent Coulson - here is the reason to watch the other films. I do believe that the shorts "The Consultant" and "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Hammer" are necessary for,his character. Especially "The Consultant" to answer the "why Hulk?" question.

Have I gone against the greater wisdom here?

I know this is repeat information and it shouldn't require another media to provide the backstory, BUT, the series Star Trek:Countdown provides the info on Nero. It explains the anger, the bald heads, the tattoos, and pretty much what happened in the prime universe before the time rift.

I enjoyed the movie, but I wondered how the rest of the audience followed Nero's motives.
