Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Joss Whedon to direct 'The Avengers'

Iwas thinking about necessary movies to see before the Avengers and I decided that none of them were necessary if you are comfortable with the whole Marvel thing.
(in reverse order) Captain America - if you don't care about how SHIELD winds up with the mysterious power source, it's a Captain America origin story - a good one Thor - despite it's flaws, the most necessary to see where this take on Loki comes from. Iron Man 1,2 - origin and decent Iron Man story, but if you know the character, not much Avengers stuff
I left the Hulk movies for last because they require a statement about Ang Lee's Hulk (I am not a fan). The second Hulk movie by passes the origin. I liked it, also a decent Hulk story, but if you are not familiar with the character, the origin is dealt with in the first movie. If you are familiar, neither is a necessity to watch.
The "Avengers Initiative" is dealt with in exposition well enough in the Avengers film to get a handle on it.
Agent Coulson - here is the reason to watch the other films. I do believe that the shorts "The Consultant" and "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Hammer" are necessary for,his character. Especially "The Consultant" to answer the "why Hulk?" question.
Have I gone against the greater wisdom here?

Not the worst film I've seen, low end of mediocre for me. I did enjoy the use of 3D though. PRobably would have enjoyed it less if I had paid to see it at a theater instread of a rental.

I actually can't remember the George Reeves Clark Kent(i did watch them),did he act like a bent over wimp like Christopher Reeve did?
Absolutely not. G.Reeves Clark was less of a bumbling act than Dean Cane's. He has always been my favorite portrayal of Clark on TV.

it's got Depp in it, so I think am Depped out, so I will, wait for reviews. ( this coming from someone who has seen all 2000 +\- episodes of Dark Shadows... Or "Dork Shadows" as we play with. Yes, I am a fan, but recognize the cheesy goodness. I have a lot of respect for what the cast and crew pulled off with their schedule though )

What Ironrod said. So far I am looking at this more like "Brady Bunch Movie" or "21 Jump Street" reboot. Um "21 Jump Street" started life as a drama, right?

I know this is repeat information and it shouldn't require another media to provide the backstory, BUT, the series Star Trek:Countdown provides the info on Nero. It explains the anger, the bald heads, the tattoos, and pretty much what happened in the prime universe before the time rift.
I enjoyed the movie, but I wondered how the rest of the audience followed Nero's motives.

Looking at one of the two following TVs:
LG Infinia 55LW5600 and the LG Infinia 50PZ750. The 55 Inch is LCD/LED and is about $1335, the 50 inch is plasma and under $1000. Opinions?
We love our 55LW5600 and $1335 seems like a good price. Make sure that price is for the 5600 and not the 5300. The 2d to 3d conversion is decent, but not near as good as the films done in 3d. The built in applications are fine, using it for Netflix now and have used YouTube. Aside; it handles yt3d quite well. Since I bought an open box, I had some trouble immediately. Nothing but praise for LG's customer service. I worked through email and had replies by 12:30 pm the next business day.

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / PS3, Blu Ray, and Sound set up

I am stumped about this, so any help/explanation is appreciated. I Have a PS3 being used as a 3D blu-ray/DVD plater along with games. The PS3 is connected video by HDMI and receiver by Optical Cable.
When running a DVD, the receiver shows 5.1 all speakers used. When running Blu-Ray, the display shows PCM two speakers. Ok, I figure that I have not set the BD Audio correctly in the PS3 menu. I change the Bitstream options, the Linear PCM options, no change. No options on the Blu-ray disc for English 5.1. However, I can hear sounds from the rear speakers. Still experimenting, I swaped the language options on the disc, from English to Spanish, to French to Portuguese. Every alternate sound track shows the 5.1 display. To me that indicates hat there is no set up issue. The test discs were Deathly Hollows pt 1, swapping from blu-ray to DVD and back to check different configurations. Issue first noticed when watching Lengend of the Guardians.
Open for ideas, or willing to give more setup details.

Just a Sunday thought waster before the day starts:
Superman: If it is a total, reboot, let's really do it. I was never fond of the Donner/Byrne interpretation of Krypton. Some one said once that it looks like an old planet ready to die instead of the tragedy of a vibrant world snuffed out. I want the new movie to go back to that, the diamond mountains, the forests, thought beasts running in heards, fire falls, etc. No more Chrystal Buildings. NO more Smallville growing up,stuff. Unless the writer has something new to say, we've seen that part to death. I'd rather an extended life on Krypton bit than more . No problem with the Kent's being otherwise in the movie. Clark Kent more along the lines of the old George Reeves Tv series. I Like the Chris Reeves one, but I just don't see that Clark as a tough investigative pulitizer prize winner. Clark and Lois not together? No problem there. I am old enough to remember that married Superman is a new story line.
Sandman: Leave the main story alone for now. How about an HBO/Showtime/Starz/ insert your favorite cable channel adaptation of the Song for Orpheus one shot. Arecognizable myth and the opportunity to introduce the Endless. Also, if a series does come of it, Orpheus and Calliope are already established, saving some intro time.
Next?

I assume it's this: Star Trek: Countdown is a four-issue comic book prequel to the 2009 film Star Trek by IDW Publishing. It follows the characters of Spock and the Romulan Nero during the year 2387, detailing the events that cause them to travel to the 23rd century. The story serves as both a lead up to the film and as a continuation of the Star Trek: The Next Generation franchise. There is an excellent summery of each of the four issues at Memory Alpha if you can't find the comics. I think they are still available in TPB and digital form. My cut on series Best->Worst: Deep Space 9 Star Trek TOS Star Trek Next Gen Star Trek TAS (ignore the animation and keep track of the stories, there are a few classic things in them- Kizinti, Spock meeting himself on Vulcan, etc.) Voyager (only watched a few) Enterprise (only watched one)

Star Trek : TMP- I thinks it gets better and better on repeated viewings. It has been at least 10 years since I have seen "The Changling" episode, so the story was not that derivative. I prefer the Director's Cut, but the theatrical release was on demand. If you can go in knowing that the pace is slow and there is too much purple cloud/exterior shots of Enterprise, give it a shot again.
TWOK - Didn't make it through it this time. It may be that we've seen it dozens of times, but how does a Science Research Starship go to a solar system, not notice that the planet they were heading to is gone, and the next nearest planet it out of orbit? I wish that they had explained Genesis a bit better too. I assume that the redesign matrix requires a planet that could otherwise sustain life, if not, it is REAL EASY to find a lifeless planet to terra form.
Star Trek (2009)- Still a good launch for the series, but I wish the blu ray had included the Countdown 4-shot. Without that background, it still feels like half to story to me.

When I first started reading comics, Superman books were 75¢.
In MY day, when I started, they were $0.12 and "All in color for a dime!" still had meaning. I stopped buying after they went past $0.25 for the regulars

I like the movie costume more than what I have seen for the reboot comics. I agree about the rubbery look though... it's SUPERMAN. I'm not thinking that a material that protects him like armor is needed. Aside... it seems that ALL the WB studios think is "the hero needs to be DARKER and GRITTIER, cause that is what was wrong with Green Lantern and worked for us with Batman" Question ('cause I haven't seen it) wasn't Jonah Hex dark and edgy? The character is.... IIRC, THAT wasn't the formula for a successful movie either. Still stumping for Give The DiniTimmverse a chance to go live action! LOL

Peter Parker is known as Spider-Man, if you're not going to have him play the role why not make a totally new hero?
Since they killed Peter Parker (and I haven't read it), why can't a new person take up the hero code name?

Routh was fine as Superman, the movie however was a poorly written travesty. It played Lex Luthor (supposedly one of the smartest men on the planet) as a megalomaniac (ok) idiot (not ok). I'm not sure why they can't seem to put together a decent movie. Marvel has figured out the formula for blockbuster supers movies, DC has figured out the formula for fantastic supers animated movies.
Yes, as I said, you have to watch it as what it really is - a sequel to Superman II. In other words, Superman Returns is Superman III. In Superman: the Movie and Superman II, Lex Luthor, supposedly the greatest criminal mind in the world, is a megalomaniac, and an idiot. His plots are just as ridiculous back then (sink California just so he could make his property in Nevada into beachfront properties?). You and I are going to disagree on this. I did watch Superman Returns as a sequel to Superman II. I still think the story fails on that, not the characterizations, certainly following in the footsteps of the Donner films. They were firmly in the Silver Age. The Super-Son stuff was bad, the Lex attempt at the real estate scam was bad, the most heroic person in the movie was Lois' boyfriend. For ravenii: If you haven't seen any of the animated, give them a try (unless you just don't like cartoons as a rule.) My personal favorite is Mask of the Phantasm, an extended episode of Batman:TAS, or the unrated Return of the Joker, if you know the Batman Beyond world. Other opinions will vary.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / DC Comics Movies Animated vs Live Action
|
on: July 31, 2011, 04:49:41 PM
|
|
This may be my first topic started, but I don't understand something.
The subject matter of DC Comics can easily make for good movies. I don't think I am out of line by stating that, with few exceptions, the DC Animated DVDs have had much better reviews and stories than the Live Action ones. The Animated ones are usually stand alone, and yet do not reboot each time.
Given the use of CGI and the cost of each, is there a reason that the decision makers do not use the scripts/treatments that the DVDs tend to use? Green Lantern: First Flight could have been stretched a bit (origin, etc) to make a 2hr film and I believe that treatment was much better than the vehicle that was produced.
Justice League? If that much money is to be invested (and Green Lantern needs a reboot already), Final Frontier seems to be a good story for the screen.
Even back to that late 1980's and earlier 1990's. Mask of the Phantasm was on a par (storywise, not money) with Batman, and the best treatment until Batman Begins.
I believe that those stories would make the money that any other treatment would Live Action. Try an experiemnt... use the DCU animated Wonder Woman and do that properly cast and budgeted Live Action. Can't do much worse that Green Lantern or Superman Returns.
After 74 years of stories, there are better things to film than what WB has been doing.
