There's only one kind of challenge that works for Superman and that is one of morality. He's the ultimate boy scout and to make it interesting he has to be in a position where he has to bend the rules to get the job done.

The other option is to do a movie of the death of superman, but I don't think you could do it justice, or even come close, in 2 hours.

I've also always liked the idea of exploring the fact that while he's extremely powerful, he's not omniscient and can't be everywhere - how do you keep from falling into the temptation to constantly be on watch, never giving yourself any chance to live a life...and if you do live that life, what guilt do you experience from taking time for yourself instead of using your powers to save the people that are surely dying while you're doing your day job?

I agree with these two points.  I don't think going cosmic scale would be as interesting.  It alienates the character.  We want to connect with Superman, to feel like if we had those powers, we'd do the same thing.

One of the best, most logical changes that Byrne brought to his Supes reboot was to have him think of himself as Clark.  He's Clark Kent and becomes Superman.  The idea for that shift (and away from him saying dumb things that no one would say like, "Great Krypton!") came directly from the first movie.  In it, Superman doesn't even appear until a full hour into the thing!  We get all kinds of time letting him be human first, and it's fascinating and moving.

Now, I don't think we need to spend another hour getting through the origin.  Everyone knows the origin.  But take the lesson that Supes needs to be human first.  Yes, give him something of equal power to punch, but give him some moral dilemma choices, too (and not something that can be fixed by flying the damned planet backwards).  Luthor is good for that.  Braniac gives you both a manipulative villain and one Supes can beat the shit out of.

IF you're going to bring Zod and Co. back, make them really awful and push Superman to the brink, making him make the horrible choice he had to in the comics.

On a side note: Personally, I think the Doomsday bit was nothing but a gimmick.  I thought he was a throwaway villian and having him kill Superman was akin to him being brought down by a tornado or other force of nature (that would have been more interesting, IMO).  There are plenty of villains that could kill Supes who would have been better, more interesting choices.  They've already made a movie of that storyline, though, and it's supposed to be pretty good.  I haven't seen it yet, though.

Anyway, those are my opinions.

I think the morality issue is a great one for Superman and they even  set that up in Superman Returns.  I didn't really like that movie, but the most interesting part for the character (for me) was when (SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT, BUT IF YOU HAVEN'T YOU DON'T CARE BY NOW)
Spoiler for Hiden:
He was in orbit over earth listening to all those "prayers" for help and choosing which ones get responses

There have been several good stories in the comics on that issue, and I even think it could be a launch point for a Bruce Wayne/Lex Luthor team up to knock Superman down a few pegs.

So, drop the kid, deal with being gone for 5 years, and set up Superman to learn a lesson about his limits and his connection to humanity.  To paraphrase "Kingdom Come", have Superman learn that Man is more important than Super.

This game's graphics would look good even today but back in 1998 they were f'n amazing. Well would have been. Greatest shame ever. I was so wanting this. Still do.

You know, if the story is good (and I think it is) and the voices are recorded (and I think over 90% are) I wish they would release this as a CGI short movie at least... jsut to hear DeForest Kelly's last performance as Bones.  I know that much of that was re-recorded, but it would still be good to hear.

And only a year later as it has dropped in price.....

This is the most fun game I have played on the Wii in a long time.  The 1970s film feel is great.  "Papa's Palace of Pain" - be a courteous guest.

284  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Wii] Not even Nintendo can sell games on their own console on: January 15, 2010, 02:07:25 PM
OK, with few exceptions, I didn't see anything on the list that is not down to under $20 at the local Gamestop.  (Endless Oceans, though, $150 at Amazon?  I sold mine on ebay for more that I bought it for.... Great, relaxing game, but I don't get the price jump ala Planescape)

Without knowing anything about the business, is it possible that Nintendo is halting production of those titles to recapture the capital for other ventures like convincing us to get the overly rumored HD Wii?

Seems much like the PS3 implementation with a disc that Netflix sends you that you need to "play" the Netflix application.  Of course the Wii can't do HD videos but (for now) most of Netflix's streaming isn't HD.

I think the disc issue is still part of that MS Xbox exclusive deal, hopefully it won't last.  But if this is implemented as well as the PS3 version, I will be happy.

I finally saw this yesterday.  It was OK.  I wish DC/Warner would allow the productions more time.  It felt like there was a good story there, but so much was just glossed over, nothing had an impact.  Other things were done off-camera I just left me with questions.  I actually liked the Green Lantern movie better.

And Superman Returns isn't something that should be touted as a resume builder for him.  Lex Luthor can be an excellent villain, however you actually have to make him intelligent and build a plot that isn't 2 hours of drivel.  I agree though that given the average American intelligence (including most directors) using a different villain would have been a better idea (like Brainiac).

I agree with this Supes quote.  I didn't have a problem with Returns being a sequel to Donner's Superman II.  I did have a problem with it being a rehashed Real Estate scam, the issue of the child and building some sort of relationship with Lois, and the ignoring of Superman's messianic complex that I think can be a focus of a good movie.  The issue, to me, is not the character for movies, but the stories considered for filming.  It's been over 70 years of Superma, there are good stories out there that don't include origins or giant robot spiders.

I'd love a new Superman movie with a new plot.  If the suits want to make sure people see it, add Bats to the mx.  Even keep Luthor and have a Bats/Luthor team against Supes ala Kingdom Come.

Played it last night.  Video and Sound are superior to the laptop* I have hooked up to the TV, so there is a plus for me. Putting the disc in the machine is not an issue for me since the PS3 is my DVD player as well. The browsing does not seem too slow, but I have not found anyway to search by title.  Does anyone know a way to that?  My work-around is to search things on a computer and put it into the que.

Wish list:  Next update to the interface; allow for a keyboard and the computer-type searching.

All 8 discs in the limited edition Gabriel Knight Mysteries : Sins of the Father; The Beast Within; Soundtrack CD w/the manuals and the GKII Graphic Prologue.  They are still in the small CD Box.

Gabriel Knight 3: Still in it's Jewel case along with the hard copy of the Graphic Prologue

I'm thinking $20 for the whole shebang, including me sending it out to you in the US (possibly Canada, if the shipping rates are reasonable)  Trades possible, looking for a few good Wii games.

NOT THESE WII GAMES (I have 'em or played 'em):

You kids all suffer from the recency effect. I already mentioned Bobby Goldsboro's "Watching Scotty Grow". But "Billy Don't Be a Hero" by Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods, Terry Jacks's "Seasons in the Sun", Cher singing "Half Breed" (or anything else, for that matter) and the entire Bubblegum movement (the Archies "Sugar Sugar", anyone?) will actually make you claw off your ears. You have obviously never heard these songs or the thread would have ended with universal agreement on page 1.

Yup those are all good baddies, but I disagree about Cher's other 70's song. I'd add Tiny Tim's Tiptoe Through the Tulips, but that song -sung in a ridiculously high falsetto and accompanied by Ukulele- was so off the wall it was almost enjoyable.

I don't remember Cher's other hit, so it must not have been memorably bad. Tiptoe Through the Tulips was one of the iconic novelty songs of its day. Which doesn't make it good, of course, just outside of consideration. Sort of like Purple People Eater or They're Coming to Take Me Away.

Surely you remember "You Better Sit Down Kids"

You beat me, we must be from the same time.  Back when you coud cut an Archies record off the back of a cereal box.  Until I saw this post my answer was:

"We had Joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.  But the stars we could reach were just starfish on the beach"

So now I'll have to say:

"SHANNON IS GONE I HOPE SHE'S DRIFTING OUT TO SEA
SHE ALWAYS LOVED TO SWIM AWAY
MAYBE SHE'LL FIND AN ISLAND WITH A SHADY TREE
JUST LIKE THE ONE IN OUR BACKYARD"

and

"Even the days are BRIGHTA, when someone you love's BESIDE YA"

and, of course, as song about the STUPIDEST woman in the world : TEEN ANGEL

"I pulled you, and we were safe. But you went running baaa--ccck"

Maceraena still wins, though.

Since GH:VH is a gimme with this one, that increases the song track considerably for me just for Pretty Woman, Double Vision, and White Wedding. Oh and some of the VH stuff too.  Since I get to add those songs for the same price, all in all, it works for me.

I'm kind of torn on this game.

I have doubts about how fun the songs will be to play more than once.  I'm not enough of a Beatles fan to buy just for fan service.

God help me, but I am considering getting Guitar Hero 5 instead.  Especially now that they have announced backwards DLC compatibility and free GH Van Halen with purchase.

that's how I feel, except I refuse to buy a guitar hero game. Also the fact that we can't import the song is a HUGE knock against getting it. I think i'd want to play a few beatles and then play the other songs. no thanks to swapping discs. maybe when the game is 20-30 i'll get it. but no way right now. so much other stuff is coming out even with half of the games on delay.

My understanding is that you can import (at least most of) the disc tracks from GH:WT and GH:SH to GH5.  Someone mentioned the exceptions are the Jimi Hendrix tracks.
