2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Gal Civ 2 with both expansions strategies on: September 08, 2008, 02:36:48 AM
I've picked up the two expansion packs. A lot has changed so I'm looking for new strategies information.

I'm currently playing a game as the terrans in a huge galaxy with few planets and stars scattered. From another post I read this is actually pretty nice because you don't spend so much time rushing to colonize. All planets have much more importance.

Anyway, What technologies do you guys usually persue? How quickly do you research weapons, or does that depend on if you want to come out the gate swinging?

So far I've focused on soil enhancement, trade, and republic government. What technologies to you generally consider as a must have? The tech tree is so damn big, it's hard to know which way to go.

How about building planets? Do you tend to generalize all your planets, or do you make all your planets specialized?

Whenever you research a new tech, do you upgrade all your ships immediately?

Other random bits of wisdom would be appreciated... I'll make my next game an AAR.

I just felt that coming into this thread with both guns blazing, basically bitching that we were ugly americans for getting upset over a little girl being told by a figure of authority that she wasn't fit to be seen when there were wars going on was insulting.

Alright alright. I have to confess I've been trolling you up a bit, laying it on a bit thick, but I came across too serious. I do think it's pretty messed up what the did to the girl, especially considering what the spirit of the games are about. China is spending far to much time painting a glossy picture when everyone already knows it's fake. I do think they are not used to all the media coverage, especially since most of it is not under their control. I hope china takes a lot of these criticisms to heart and steers their country in a more positive direction, but I think like all governments, they have short memories and will go back to the same old same old once the games are over.

you're projecting your feelings of moral superiority on others with different values just because they think differently than you, which must make them wrong.

We're really wasting brain cycles (including me, replying to this stupid topic) on this such an unimportant issue?

While the issue may seem unimportant and a waste of time to you it doesn't mean it isn't to others, nor does it make us wrong for feeling differently than you.  In fact, were China not such a cesspool for human rights violations, I'm sure that many would gladly overlook this.  However, by hosting the world, they put themselves under the microscope to be publicly scrutinized.

I would argue that at the moment, America is also a cesspool for human rights violations. Yes, China has put itself on the world stage and all the world can see, but America is on the world stage constantly and its own citizens are glossing over our treatment of people in Iraq and our conduct in our war on terror. We have been trained the listen to the media. China's gaff made front page news so of course, American's focus their moral outrage on it, but when our own government does horrible things, there is no problem, because the news said so.

It's a straight forward case of pot meets kettle....

so in essence, all injustices of the world are assigned a value by scubabbl that represents their importance.  on this scubabble scale, treating a little girl like an unwanted member of society ranks at around 1,293, while the wars in iraq, georgia and afghanistan rank around 234, 235 and 236 respectively.  if you post something with a value of 1,293 without first mentioning how horrible numbers 234, 235 and 236 are, you're a hypocrite (by the way, let's face it, in this world there's no such thing as an innocent nation so if only those not guilty of hypocrisy were allowed to cry "foul" every now and then, we'd be living in a pretty silent world) and "wasting brain cycles" even commenting on it.

 icon_lol icon_lol icon_lol

i anxiously await your values for world hunger, aids and reality television.

(by the way, our citizens are "glossing over" our problems?  have you SEEN this government's approval ratings?  have you even stepped outside your house to get a newspaper, even.   Roll Eyes.  i love it when uninformed people try to make others feel bad by spouting something they heard on television or from friends at a party.)

Wrong. Treating a little girl like an unwanted member of society falls closer to 1450. World hunger is pretty high up there, because being hungry sucks. AIDS is so 90's so that's pretty low. Reality television is the greatest scourge on the face of the earth.

Our citizens gloss over problems because we thing firmly frowning on the administration (giving low approval ratings) is just and fair punishment. We're apathetic and focus our major outcries on what the media tells us vs. actually doing something about it.

I don't know the exact numbers and am far to American to look them up, so lets say our population is 250,000,000. If roughly 80% disapprove of our government's administration, that's like, 200,000,000 people who disapprove. Yet the administration continues to run rampant over our rights. We allow them to do whatever they want with no more punishment than a severe finger wagging.

It's funny that the major media story of the day is the poor little Chinese girl, and here you are, spouting about it like you heard it on t.v.  Tongue

It's a show, and it's China, who has different values than most western cultures. The face you show is more important that anything else. Presentation is important.

Here's a question, if everyone in China has no problem with this, including the girls, would you still have a problem with it? If so, you're projecting your feelings of moral superiority on others with different values just because they think differently than you, which must make them wrong.

Another non-issue hyping to seem important just to digg on China because they are different than us.

We have 3 wars going on in the world, Iraq, Afghanistan, Georgia...
With the Olympics sports happening right now...
With a major political election about to take place...
With all the other crap going on in the world...

We're really wasting brain cycles (including me, replying to this stupid topic) on this such an unimportant issue?

The human race is failing... *sigh*

and as if this in itself is not enough, I present even more evidence.

got my copy at midnight (360). There were literally like 300 people there. It was a mad house. Played for 2 hours when I got home. Some of you must have picked up a different game than me. Mine wasn't dark and the driving feels less Arcady than before but that doesn't mean bad. It feels more like driving and less like fzero now.

Combat was good, but no gun fights yet. I did get in one knife fight. I'll tell you this much, standing over a guy and watching your character talk shit and bend over and stab a dude in the chest... It pings that moral nerve most of us have. Talk about exploring your dark side.

The voice acting is great, the music is great, and the humor is spot on. All in all, a great game.

think the problem alot of people have is that the game presents itself as this casual, doable in small chunks meandering along untill you get close to 60. Then it turns into a hardcore, raiding, need at least 3+hours to get anything done type game. It's an abrupt change and i'd imagine shocking/dissapointing to alot of players new to the genre(which was a big chunk of Blizz's audience) Sure you can all goto the BG when your 60 but it's the people that don't play 'casual' who you are gonne be cursing when they kick your ass all day because they are wearing all uber purple gear and your stuck in your wussy gear that was fine for getting to 60 in a non instance pve fashion. It's really almost 2 different games.

Definately. I'm finding as I approach 60 (55 now), the time requirement for instances is starting to get much larger. VC 2 hours, Maurdon, 5 hours. I don't even want to think about Molten Core. That sounds like it takes days.

Even the casual gamer will reach 60 eventually. Then they will have nothing to do, given their time constraints.

At the above link you will find a huge, detailed picture of the Right side continent of the WoW universe. It's about 10mb and is like a high res sat. image of the entire continent.

The weird part comes near the bottom. If you look to the west of booty bay and STV, you will see two islands that seem to be somewhat built up, yet in all my travels, I have never seen them and they don't show on the regular map.

Any ideas?
19  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW just got even better... on: March 02, 2005, 07:50:41 PM
Starting here, http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/story/chapter1.html I've been reading the history of the Warcraft universe. It really has glued the world together and explained why the world is how it is. In doing so, the places I visit have become much more facinating. If you have not read the history, I advice doing so. For example, knowing why the searing gorge and burning steps are the way they are really makes you imagine the horror that was there. It is quite facinating.

That way, for collection quests, or kill quests, etc, you know exactly how many objects you need to collect or enemies you need to kill without having to go look at the journal. There are some obscene quests where you have to collect 15 items+ or 10 of 4 items meaning 40 items and you tend to lose track of how many you have. This provides a quick visual cue on the main screen of how many items/creatures you have left to grab/kill.

I say go for it. You have been given the opportunity to live in a different country, and a good one at that. You might feel a little out of your league, and I feel your pain. My wife and I talked about moving to Japan, and we were going to, but then I got a job so we decided to stay in Hawaii. That being said, although I was a little scared to move to Japan, I was still totally stoked.

Anyway, I say you should definatly the the opportunity presented to you.  Pretty much what you are getting is a trip to italy plus tours around Europe. Regardless of anything else, Europe does have some awesome history, expecially Italy. The chance to go over there a live for a year and being able to tour Italyand the rest of Europe is just to good to pass up. Think about that.

I think in the end, you might regret not taking this chance.

At level 50, I run around through zones now that have Mithril and Thorium veins. Mining those while I quest in the evening can usually net me about 20 ore. Which in turn equates to about 4-5g.  If I'm out focusing on mining, I can usually net enough ore to make 15g or so.

I enjoy playing Zefran and I don't see my self getting bored any time soon. I'm level 47 and there is still tons of stuff I have not seen. There are many instances I have not visited and there are many quests still to be done. I remember I had 1 day when I had no quests, but usually my log is full.

I don't know what problems people talk about balancing. I've dueled plently of guys and all our fights seem pretty close. I've partied with every class there is except the shaman of course and I am envious of the skills other classes have and I don't.  But at the same time, I feel my skills are contributing to the group as well.

I think WoW already has the structure to deal with ganking low level guys. Upon killing a lowbie, you become cursed. Maybe it's a small curse to start, but the more you kill, the greater the curse. Maybe the only way to work off the curse is through doing some sort of quest. I could think of a million ways to do it. I'm not sure I like the reputation and honor points system unless the player is in some way punished.
