41  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Elder Scrolls Online on: January 13, 2014, 01:02:21 AM
I managed to get a bit of time in on ESO.  While Im still not blown away, it does seem better than the last beta.  It took me forever to download the client this time and I didnt get a lot of play time in but I still dont think this game is anywhere near worth a subscription fee. If thats the route they are going I expect it to fail and do as pretty much every other recent MMO and go FTP.
Part of the problem with these short betas is that you dont get much of a chance to play a developed character.  Playing a low level toon doesnt give you much of a feel for the game or its capabilities. Now I understand this is a beta and not a sales demo but these days betas are made to help sell the game, so I hope they run a more extended beta soon, where you have some time to play a bit deeper of a character.

Look at how well Intelligence did (16+ million?) - it was a decent premiere but it's pretty much just Chuck with the humor and quirky geek stuff neutered out.  Yet Chuck itself never had ratings even close to that.

I think a lot of Intelligence's draw was due to star power, something Chuck did not have.  You have Marg Helgenberger, whos got lots of clout and Sawyer from LOST, in his first starring role since LOST.  I think they would have been very disappointed if it didnt draw huge to start.  It will likely have a big drop ( most new shows do ) and then settle in somewhere around 9-10 million, if its any good.

The other issue for me was a transfer to 2nd shift at work.  I was missing a lot of stuff I wanted to watch because I was limited to a couple of shows recorded at any given time slot.  I decided that the convenience was worth the cost at that point.
Thanks for understanding the "entitlement" thing was a joke.  I believe youre entitled to view TV how you choose and hate the games they play with the various streaming sources, especially when its a stream of OTA free programming, but again I also understand the business aspect of the whole thing and accept that it is what it is and the final control of that lies in the hands of the networks.
44  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: ABC Television Network's War on Convenience on: January 09, 2014, 08:35:38 PM
the sense of entitlement is strong in  this one  icon_wink  Quite a few on the networks have been delaying internet streaming of episodes.  This is nothing new.  Crying about the injustice of having to wait a week seems like a real 1st world problem to me.  This is about holding onto cable and satellite revenue streams and as a business it makes perfect sense.  I honestly dont like it myself as I have Directv and the winter storm killed my signal on tuesday.  I missed Agents of Shield and Directv is not one of the streaming authorized providers yet.   I signed up for a free month of Hulu plus and streamed it there, problem solved. I was recently OTA and internet only for my TV entertainment but refuse to pirate anything so when networks started doing the delay thing I eventually decided to go with the convenience of satellite Tv once again.  Which is I am sure, exactly as they hoped for.

Spoiler for Hiden:
So - Coulsen's a freaking zombie.

Spoiler for Hiden:
While its not surprising in the least that you would go with that.  He isnt a rotting animated corpse, he isnt craving brains or human flesh, hes pretty agile and his higher brain functions seem, for the most part, intact. It appears the only real difference in Coulson is that he lost his will to live, which they attempted to repair with false memories. So unless revival with alien tech is an automatic zombification qualifier, I would say no he is nothing like a zombie.  Now go write a book about how Jesus Christ was actually a zombie and the Last Supper was a bit more unseemly than depicted in the bible!  icon_wink

Well AOS is back from the holidays.  The return episode might be the best yet.  I really liked the direction they took.

Spoiler for Hiden:
This episode was the lynch pin to the team coming together as a unit finally.  Theyve learned the most important thing that they needed to learn was to trust each other, completely.  I think we are probably done with the wishy washy team stuff and they are now going to be a lot more kick ass.  Excellent stuff with Coulson as well, including an awesomely creepy scene.  Oh and Ron Glass alert!  Anyway I want to believe that AOS has turned the corner, and this episode shows it may have just done that.

I have found Sanderson to be one of the better new fantasy writers out there.  Great choice by Jordans estate to grab him for the series wrap up.  I can highly recommend Sanderson's Way of Kings.  Its the first in an epic series ( I believe its planned for ten books ) It starts off a bit scattered as there are a number of important characters in various areas of the world that hes drawing together. Once it gets going though, its a fantastic read.  Book two is due out in March I believe.  The Mistborn series is very good as well, I think you'll enjoy it.

I hope he is okay, maybe the Weather got to his area(where is he from?)

He did mention something on FB that his internet got knocked out.

10 days without internet for CeeKay?  Send the paramedics out because I am sure he is lying in the dark twitching uncontrollably on the floor somewhere by now.

He's got internet, messaged him on FB today.  Sounded like he's just taking a little GT break.

Ah, the ol' "die and then attend my funeral to see if they miss me" routine.  Got it.

Thanks for the feedback.  The problem seems to be when Amazon transfers the items to my local post office, as it takes two days for items to get from UPS to USPS to me, even after they arrive at my local post office.  However, the tracking page says that the sender requested that this happen, so I still blame Amazon.  It's ultimately their responsibility to get me my package on time, and that includes not using shipping methods that won't allow that to happen.

Quote
I always hear about people having issues with Amazon, but I've never had a single issue with them in all the years I've done business with them.  They're pretty amazing in my opinion.  In fact, I ordered something right before Christmas and it came a day earlier than I thought it would.  I'm also a Prime member.
I'd been singing their praises up to this point, too, and it's just this past few weeks when the service has gone rapidly downhill.  I can understand this happening around Christmas time, but it was after Christmas that the problem really started.  I'm hoping this is just a bump in the road, but I have a bad feeling that it's not.

I think I have only had a few items go the UPS > USPS route and yeah that method sucks.   Ive never had any major item go that way usually its small stuff and not a big deal to me if its a few days off. I definitely think you should lodge a complaint to Amazon though, it may help them improve their delivery choices.  Im thinking that it saves them money and if no one bitches they are cool with it, which is understandable from a business stand point.  Unless people start complaining, they are probably not going to make any changes.  Thanks for pointing this out, Im going to keep my eye on my next few 2 day deliveries and see how they are shipped.  If I see an issue, I will file a complaint as well.  Because now "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!"

I found out about this in a deal site a few days ago.  It seems legit.  You basically watch about 15 minutes of commercials to earn enough for a movie.  Theres a pop up while youre watching to verify that youre actually at your computer that you have to click on.

i loved all of series one,the first being the Taxi Driver giving Holmes a choice of pill, the third being the bombs planted on people and Holmes had to solve each one in a number of hours(ended at the Swimming Pool),but number 2 was The Blind Banker, with the Asian girl in the museum with the tea cups, decent enough episode but i liked the other two better

FWIW-Episode 3 next week-His Last Vow-,looks really good, and a lot more serious(so probably expect a friggin' cliffhanger again Roll Eyes)

Nope, I think he's got it right.  In both series 1 & 2 it seemed to me at least, that the middle episodes were the weaker ones.  The term "weaker" being relative, of course, as I liked both middle episodes a lot.  For example in season 2 they started off with the Adler episode, which was fantastic.  The middle episode, the Baskerville one, was good but then came the Reichenbach episode, which was incredibly good.

Saw it this week. Loved it. I think I may end up liking these movies even more than the LOTR trilogy (which I love). It's nice to not endure constant doom and gloom which gets ponderous on repeated viewings. Plus, Bilbo is so much more likable then Frodo. Thinking about it, I've also always preferred the Hobbit book to the LOTR book trilogy as well.... Hmmmm....

I think a lot of the Bilbo vs Frodo thing is due to Martin Freeman.  He is simply rocking the role of Bilbo.
63  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Hobbit finds a director on: January 01, 2014, 11:37:03 PM
Finally saw it today.  Liked it a lot.  Smaug was awesome.  The movie is much faster paced than the first one and the 2 hours and 40 mins went by surprisingly fast.  The movie also seemed to have a bit more serious tone and while there were some amusing bits in the fight scenes, they werent played as much towards the comedy side as the first movie.   All in all I felt it was better than the first ( and I liked the first one )   I think the final movie, based on where they leave off in Desolation, will deal with a lot more of the peripheral story lines, which is fine by me.  It should help fill in a lot of the background that links the happenings in The Hobbit to The LOTR, something that the books themselves never did.

Unfortunately True Detective is on pay TV ( HBO ) which I dont get.  Wouldnt mind seeing it so Ill probably have to rent the series when it comes out on disc.   Helix looks pretty creepy with a kind of cross between The X Files and The Thing.  Ill give Intelligence a chance.  It may be decent, the cast looks good.  Outside of that theres not much new that Im all that interested in. I dont know if I'll give The 100 a look after the CW gave us that utter train wreck series The Tomorrow People, a series so bad, its made me gun shy with the CW now.

I got 3 new Steam games from the Octopus Overlords, doubling my inventory and giving me my first-ever backlog. Also two flannel shirts from a BIL who apparently didn't get the no-more-gifts memo.

Hmm, people gave me a couple of games in the OO group, but I never go there anymore after my last meltdown. icon_neutral I take it people were giving out games?

Yeah, somebody started a "Wishtmas" thread in which people started fulfilling sub-$5 wishlist items in their Steam friends lists. Many of those recipients who could afford to do so "paid it forward" with more gifts. They were flying fast and furious for a week or so; virtually everybody who participated got multiple free games, whether we could pay it forward or not. Their generosity was humbling to somebody like me who only ever buys 1-2 games a year at most. An interesting side effect was that my Steam friends list went from 0 to 19 in a few days.
That's pretty awesome.  We should totally do something like that.

I paid it forward a different way - I donated a small section of my game collection.  In total, a shade over 250 games, my quad-rotor helicopter, a portable DVD player, and a bunch more totaling $15,000 for the Phoenix Children's Hospital here in Phoenix.  I may not have kids, but I hope I helped someone's kid through a tough time in their life.   The Weghted Companion Cube will never threaten to stab you.

Three concert blu rays to add to my collection:
SuperTramp Live in Paris
Rock Show: McCartney and Wings doing the Venus and Mars tour (one of my favorite albums and an awesome concert)
David Gilmore: Remember that Night: Live at the Royal Albert Hall

My main gift was a Blade 350QX quad copter. Its a gps assisted radio controlled drone and its amazing. It comes with a custom mount for a video camera (for a GoPro ) so it serves as an excellent aerial video platform.
I also got accessories for the copter, a variable charger and extra battery.
I also got a really cool set of Pink Floyd shot glasses for my bar.

Well, I enjoyed it so much I brought the Blu Ray.

Yup...I've seen it maybe 6-7 times altogether, as for why they did things, because it's a movie. So why didn't they use the sword before...because it's a movie, that wall was dumb it isn't going to stop...it's a movie, why did the jet fly within 50 feet of...it's a movie. I enjoyed it immensely, though I'm a fan of the genre so I tend to be more forgiving then others.

Yeah "It's a movie" is just a really bad way of making excuses for unnecessarily poor film making in my opinion.

You're right to a point but sometime a movie comes along and you can put your brain in neutral and just go along for the ride and enjoy it.  Of course being able to do that with some movies is quite subjective and plot points some people can gloss over, other people can just ignore.   For me, I overlooked some of the inconsistencies and just enjoyed watching some good ole' Giant Robot kicking Ginormous Monster butt action.

The problem with asking people to defend a faith based belief system is its only defense for belief is faith.  There is no middle ground between belief based on faith and belief based on empirical evidence.
Myself, I believe everyone has the right to believe as they choose, as long as they in turn respect the beliefs of others and do not use their beliefs to inhibit others from their rights to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness and freedom from religious persecution.  You can believe in God, Allah, Buddha or the Flying Spaghetti Monster, for all I care along as its what makes your life better and you dont use it to make other peoples lives worse.

this one?  Looking at it I see there are reviews that say it won't work on Sony blu ray players, which is what I have, while other reviews claim issues with other players.  If that turns out to be the cheapest option I'd rather spend more just to avoid any hassle.

thanks for the heads up though.

Yeah,  its the region free version.  The complains are due to people not understanding the difference between British tv formattting and US players.  It likely wont play on most lower end bluray players because of that but most high end players can handle the formatting and can play the discs just fine.  I actually own the set but I have a multi format player that can handle the discs.  It is kind of a screw up on Amazons part because most people are going to think that "region free" unlocks the discs for all US players and dont understand its a format issue and not a region issue.  Bottom line, unless you have a full format capable player youre smart to avoid the set and just get the reformatted "americanized" versions.

Amazon has a release date for the season 3 blurays:  Feb 11th!  Thats pretty quick considering the UK air date isnt until early January.
