I was half expecting them to go with some generic new villain instead of breaking out a staple from another hero's rogue gallery.

I doubt thats going to be much more than a name drop although the Arrow will likely face minor villains and henchmen attached to that name.

I will say that they need to work on some of the fight scenes and perhaps use stand in stunt people on occasion.  Some of the fight scenes where they've used the actors have been a bit underwhelming and lack fluidity.

Im definitely in the give it time to find its legs camp.  While it hasnt blown me away, it has been entertaining enough to keep me watching.  I will say I didnt come into the series expecting The Avengers part deux, so im not having issues with the whole Marvel world stuff that people are clamoring about.  I do have problems with some of the characters but I understand that the show is new as are most of the characters and they need time to develop.  The only character I have a real problem with is Agent McMannequin.  I mean they guy couldnt be more wooden if he tried.  I also agree that Agent May is way underused right now but it seems that they are dropping enough little hints about her past that she will eventually step up her game, as a character. Anyway Im enjoying it enough to keep watching and I hope that the show develops into something better.  And if it doesnt then at least we get the occasional gratuitous shots of a scantily clad Skye to fall back on.

I loved seeing Shaw truly bond with someone. Entire time I am thinking "anyone that hurts that girl is going to pay dearly".

Also loved the Carter scene at the end. I could tell she knew they were about to try and manhandle her and I was trying to think who might help her. Pleasantly surprised to see she didn't need ANY help.

A little worried about the Shaw/Root tease. I am enjoying both characters and don't want to see the edginess of the relationship make me like either one less.

One of those ladies coming after you is bad news but if they team up and youre in their sights ( or in their way )  you may as well just shoot yourself, it would be quicker and less painful!

Last nights episode was probably the best this season so far.  They have had a running bit this season that has been done subtly in the back ground with Shaw slowly trying to win over Bear.  I got a chuckle last night when she admitted her reason for being on the team.  Also Im starting to think Shaw has rubbed off a bit in Carter, because that was a bit of a shock last nite.  Understandable, under the circumstances but damn!    After how this episode ended, next weeks is looking pretty good as well.

I know they're focusing on the non-super part of the universe, but, other than the occasional mention of a superhero, the characters act like none of the Marvel stuff even exists.  In the latest episode, the characters completely dismissed the possibility of telepathy/precognition and were amazed by a micro camera that fits in a person's eye.  In a world where people have seen the likes of Thor, the Hulk, and Iron Man suit, this just doesn't make any sense.

Actually, they played it both ways.  I get that they were amazed at the eye tech, as their top techies said that SHIELD was at least 10 years away from that kind of thing. Its not that they didnt think it was possible, they were amazed that someone else had it before them.
As far as the superhero thing, yeah they are intentionally trying to keep some separation but I think they have a formula in mind wants to keep that stuff mostly on the back burner while they develop the team dynamic.  I think that this will change further into the season but they dont want to shoot their wad right at the beginning. Like most Whedon shows they are going for that build up, instead.   As far as dismissing telepathy, yep the science nerds did but Skye directly mentioned the New York event as why its possible.   In reality people tend to deny things they cant accept.  Hell, people still dismiss the Moon Landing as faked and theres even a Flat Earth society out there.  Its not much of a leap to think that people heavily based in science would have a hard time accepting the supernatural nature of telepathy.

If you thought 7 was boring then wait till you get to 10. Better yet, skip 10 and just read the wiki page for spoilers, trust me you won't miss anything.

On the plus side, the series really kicks it in gear after book 10 and IMHO the final 4 books pay off well.  The truth of the matter is that Jordan could have condensed books 7-10 into one novel and it would have helped the series immensely.

Finally read the gobble gobble thread and I think the issues are

1. No one responded in the thread.  It's frustrating when a thread one starts is a dud. Happens to everyone. Nothing personal. Especially on weekends.
2. Bitterness at no responses vented in a pretty jerky way.  I'm all up in these threads and I'm definitely not a part of any clique, though I do get why this place (all forums) at times feels cliquish.
3. On GT you make your presence known as much or as little as you want. I've had feuds on here that made me want to walk away forever.  But this really is the best forum on the net.
4. Sense of entitlement for having been around a long time. Sorry if you're feelings were hurt, but don't be petty. This is the best forum on the net (though it TOTALLY could use some more traffic and new blood) and it gives and takes away to all members regardless of seniority...

If you try looking at things from a different perspective you may see that the majority of replies you got in the gobble, gobble thread were made in jest.  I dont think anyone meant to hammer you, they, myself included, were just having a bit of fun with your reaction.  Unfortunately, humor of that nature, especially on the internet, does not always play well.

What sort of lenses would I be looking at for that?  I am willing to buy an extra lense.
You're in luck, you can that look with the cheapest lens out there - 50mm f1.8. Anything with a nice shallow depth of field will do.

Unless you can afford the more expensive 50mm f1.4, the f1.8 is a great choice.  Really nice lens for the price.

I can't recommend highly enough that you go to a local brick & mortar camera store and try to hold these things in person.  If you hold one and fall in the love with the way it feels compared to the other options, go for it.

Yep, agreed. It's one thing to look at them online, but it's really a good idea to get a feel for them. Don't know how any of the stores work over there, but one store over here frequently has sales on the different brands. Like for instance, one month might be Nikon, another Canon, and so on. Also a real camera store will have knowledgeable people who are trained to know the cameras they sell, vs a big box store like Costco, and you'll be much more comfortable taking it into a camera store for questions and any repairs.

While I agree with what you say here I do want to point out that Costco has the best return policy on the planet.

Ill leave it to some of the experts to explain the technical stuff, Im an amateur. But Ive often heard that image stabilization on a 50mm lens is overkill,  IS is generally used on telephoto lenses.  Of course if shaky hands is a major issue for you, perhaps a nice tripod would be a good solution.  A good tripod can solve a whole lot of problems, especially when taking portraits, landscapes, etc.  BTW if you are going to go with Canon or Nikon, you can find recent but older model kits for a much better price, with a bit of searching. Might save you a couple hundred bucks.

Honestly, point and shoot cameras have improved tremendously in the last few years. If anything, if capturing memories of your children are the main concern, I'd go with P&S as they're more likely to stay with you wherever you go, and there are some models that offer benefits of DSLR if you go with some of the more advanced models. About a year ago, my Brother had a wedding, and while we have a Canon 7D, we opted not to bring it as it's quite bulky, and we later regretted that decision as most of the pictures were from the bride's side of the family and once we knew we were going on a long roadtrip, we started talking about getting a P&S, but with DSLR-like benefits. We looked at both Canon and Nikon and several other makes, and we settled on the Sony HX30V, a fantastic camera that has an amazing auto mode and also a very good manual mode, plus a bunch of other cool goodies such as an awesome panoramic mode. This camera gives the best of both worlds that fits in your pocket.

+1   I have both a DSLR and a very nice P&S camera as well.  Theres a lot of instances where a full on DSLR kit is too much to carry and p&s cameras are pretty darn nice these days.

Hey Reemul, chill, man!  icon_wink
Arkon stated in his op that he wanted a DSLR, hence my focus on DSLRs and not other options.  My opinions on p&s and "step up" cameras would definitely be different but then thats not what he asked about, so I didnt go there.  And yes there are plenty of other excellent options for DSLR but none have the pedigree and lens section available from Canon or Nikon and since there is not a huge difference in price, in my opinion, unless there is some major mitigating factor in going to another brand, youre pretty safe going with Nikon or Canon.
193  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Hold that pose! (Looking at getting a new camera) on: October 08, 2013, 11:23:42 PM
I was going to tell you basically the same thing as Wonderpug.  For DSLR its either Canon or Nikon.  Theres a great selection of lenses for either one and they are priced well.  If you choose Canon look into getting the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8,  its a fast and very clean lens that runs around $100.  You can get great portrait pics with it and the price is unbeatable.
I have a canon set up myself and love it.

Romo is a good NFL QB with above average skills but he is also the king of the late game collapse.  He has thrown 23 fourth quarter INT's in his career and they generally end up bad for him.  In fact the last 8 games that he has thrown a 4th quarter INT are all losses and six of those by less than 7 points.   With those kind of credentials I am amazed that he doesnt play for the Lions.

Shaw is in a very similar situation as Reese was at the start of the show.  Both were slated for death by their handlers. They both survived their death sentences but came away scarred.  Reese responded by basically going through life trying to get himself killed while while doing vigilante work.  Finch gave him focus and a purpose.  Cant say for sure that Reese inst still a bit suicidal but he does apply his skills quite well and doesnt seem quite as willing to die now.  Shaw is still in the early stages of her life change and her response appears to be somewhat the opposite of Reeses.  Instead of trying to get herself killed, she seems to be actively trying to kill everyone else in the world that gets in her way.  In some ways Shaw is a reflection of Roots amoral attitude. They both tend to look at people as things in their way that need to be removed.

I like the addition of Shaw and think it will make for an very interesting dynamic.  If nothing else she provides a dark form of comic relief.  The latest scene with her and Fusco was awesome.
Oh I will give bonus points to the writers if they do not make Carters new rookie partner an HR plant because right now I cant see how he can possibly be anything else.
