You know, seeing that scene again from Skye, it just seems like her actress is just mugging it up for the camera knowing exactly what the scene was for.

Yeah she does seem to put a little extra bounce into the scene, not that theres anything wrong with that!

Spoiler for Hiden:
You knew that their fight with HR was going to be costly. Part of me is glad it wasnt Fusco, though.  Hes just too much fun to have around.  I will miss Joss.  She was an excellent character.  I dont think I would want to be Simmons right now.  I am pretty sure Reese is going to end him in a particularly nasty manner.

Had a great NFL day yesterday watching the Saints and Broncos win.  Saints kept trying to let the 49ers win with turnovers, but squeaked it out in the end.  Hated Falcons are next!

I think the call on the Brees sack was BS.  The Niners didn't really do anything to win the game, but that call was bad.

What part about not tackling the head do you not understand?  He bends his neck backwards.  That is exactly what the rule was put in place for.

That picture is almost all the way through the tackle as he's falling backwards and misrepresents the actual play.  He hits him in the sternum, doesn't attack the head and doesn't strike his head.

No it doesnt misrepresent the play.  It illustrates why the play was flagged.  I dont care if the hit started at his ankles.  Im not saying there was intent to go to the head but thats where he ended up.  BY THE RULES, it is a penalty.  Im sure you dont like it but if you cant see why the play was flagged youre wearing blinders.   Theres no blame to Brooks for the play, it was a hustle play and sometimes those end up as a penalty, but the call was not BS it was correct by the rules.   If you want to place blame for the loss, instead of looking at one play, how about you look at the whopping 196 yds of total offense that the Niners put up.  You have to play pretty bad to lose a game where your opponent turns the ball over 3 times to your 1.  The Niners didnt lose because of one penalty, they lost because they sucked on offense.

while I dont plan on watching, I can understand why.  Its been 50 years since the JFK assassination and the circumstances are still considered a mystery.  This event completely changed the course of history and altered our national identity.  I believe it marks a huge turning point in american society, where we lost our innocence and the green grass and picket fence idealism of the 50's disappeared.  If the rest of the world thinks we're idiots, so be it but if it were the Queen of England that was assassinated 50 years ago, what do you think would be on the cover of their magazines?

I liked how they brought Noble into the series.  Hes a haunted, tragic and very subdued character.  Hes not the focus of the show so bringing him in with a whimper instead of a BANG, seemed appropriate.  They can take the time to develop his character now and let that story tell us just how important he may become to our heroes.

As far as Loki in this, I loved Hiddleston's performance in limited screen time, but...
Spoiler for Hiden:
but come ON -- if he can impersonate anyone and everything with no limitation, how am I ever supposed to take a scene in a Thor movie at face value? He's basically a Walking Deus Ex Machina:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Thor saw through his illusion when he visited Loki in jail. Why couldn't he see through him when Loki was on the throne?
Spoiler for Hiden:
I don't think he truly saw through it in the jail, he just kind of assumed it because he knew his mothers death hit Loki harder than his illusion showed.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Also since Loki clearly wanted out of his cell, its possible that he played on Thors emotions and wanted Thor to "see" through his ruse.   He knew he couldnt play off trust so he went with sympathy over a shared tragedy.  Thats kind of how Loki rolls.

The big problem with SHIELD is people were expecting or wanting a show that was formed and hit the ground running.  What we got was an origin story.
137  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on: November 13, 2013, 11:37:36 PM
It probably wasnt smart to put AOS up against the highest rated show on TV, NCIS.   NCIS had over 19 million viewers, last night.  In fact the whole CBS tuesday line up is kicking everybody's butt right now.  Shield has no lead in to help support it and just cant hang with the powerhouses of CBS.  I do believe that AOS will get better, given time but it needs that time to develop.  The latest episodes have basically focused on one individual and how they fit in with the team.  Once they get past that phase and can start concentrating more on the show's mythology, the show should get much more entertaining.  Until then, its a matter of whether they can survive.  I hope they can because I think theres a good show here.

Saw it yesterday and it was good.  The pacing seemed a bit off to me though and felt almost too frenetic at times.  While it wasnt quite at the Michael Bay level of action, it was definitely action packed.  The main villain was seemed more of a side note and frankly they could have run the whole plot line without him.  Thats not necesssarily a bad thing as it allowed them to focus more on Thors relationships with Loki and Jane.  Hiddleston is once again excellent as Loki and steals pretty much every scene he is in.  Overall its a good movie, its fun and fast paced.  Its packed with special effects and visually worth seeing on the big screen.

The problem with episodes like this is putting a main character in mortal danger doesn't have the emotional weight since you know they will come out at the end. Unless its like the last episode of the season and they want to kill a character off for a big splash.

Spoiler for Hiden:
I was actually surprised a bit that Simmons didnt die.  Recently coming off a 2 week hiatus, I thought they may just let her die for the shock value.  I could almost see Whedons hand of doom sneaking in there.  So for me it was kind of a reverse surprise.

When Netflix had their fiasco, Blockbuster had a pretty good thing going with the combined in mail and in store movie distribution.  Unfortunately they kept closing stores and that eliminated the in store part for most people.  It was great to be able to walk into a blockbuster an grab a brand new release instead of hoping that you got lucky and received it through the mail in any reasonable amount of time.  Once they closed down the Blockbusters near me and I lost that convenience, I found that it generally took months to get a copy of a new release, in the mail.  I dumped them soon after.  Not surprised by the shutdown, at all.

I am being realistic, however, and know it won't last, but I have been letting myself enjoy each win for 24 hours before nitpicking on them. Looking forward to the next 3 games because it will give a better idea of where the team will finally end up.

They have a good defense, a fairly safe offense and a veteran coach to keep things running smooth.  Its not flashy but it does win games.

He don't have a fully automatic weapon, did he? He had no history of mental illness.

His family reported his text messages to their local police, who called LAPD. They showed up at his place 45 minutes after he left for the airport.

So instead of throwing the whole firearm community under the bus, tell me what actions you think we should have had to prevent this?

Asking for some form of gun control is not "throwing the whole firearm community under the bus"  If you want facts though how about this?  More people have died through domestic gunfire then all of the lives lost in all of the wars in US history.  That is not just an arbitrary fact.  The truth is I dont know if any kind of gun control would have stopped this situation. But unless you feel its fine that since 1968 we have lost almost 1.4 million people to domestic gunfire.  If you want to point to one incident and ask your question, youre missing the far bigger picture.  What happened at LAX is just a symptom of a far bigger problem and while its easy to say that some kind of gun control may not have helped, its also possible that stricter checks may have.  Heres the link to the gun death article.

I am not saying that this particular incident could have been stopped by stricter gun regulations, I am saying that this as well as others in that total of 1,384,171 may have been.  Thats not throwing the gun community under the bus,  Im not asking for the government to start kicking down doors and taking people guns away.  Im saying that theres clearly a problem with gun deaths in the US and ignoring the fact will not solve the problem.  If its possible that we can do something to stop these senseless deaths are we not obligated to do so?  After all, the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness seems far more important than the right to bear arms, that may be why they were listed as unalienable rights.  Facts are facts and we have a gun problem in the US.  This is just another case of a possible avoidable death.  This individual case is not the issue.  It just helps expose the problem once again.

Another life lost to a nut job with a gun. I did not know this but apparently this is the first TSA agent to lose his life in the line of duty. The guy walked into an airport with a semi-auto rifle and 100's of rounds of ammo.  Its amazing that this wasnt worse.  Yeah, no kind of gun control needed here in the good ol' Wild West USA.
149  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] Ender's Game on: November 02, 2013, 03:52:06 PM
Overall, I think the movie kind of suffered from the same thing Harry Potter 1 and 2 did.  They tried to include too much of the book, and ended up rushing through too much so they could hit as many scenes from the book as possible.  I think it would have been much better if they made the movie its own thing a bit more, make some giant but smart cuts from the story so they could have more time to let scenes and characters develop.

While I cant comment directly regarding this particular movie as I havent seen it yet, this is always a fine line to walk.  Change too little and people complain the movies are bloated, change too much and people complain that the plot has been ruined.  Thats why I try to enjoy book to movie adaptations for what they are and not for what I want them to be.  Ive seen movies that take the slimmest of material from the book they are based on that have been poor adaptations of the source material but still good movies, The Bourne Identity is a good example of this.  I felt that The Lord of the Rings trilogy managed to walk the line quite well, though others felt far too much was omitted ( like Tom Bombadil, etc. )

I got caught up tonight. Coincidentally, we're watching Buffy for the first time, too, and that had a real uneven start. Halfway through the second season the characters are really starting to gel and the balance between serious and camp is starting to feel right. I don't have any comic book preconceptions about SHIELD -- it's all new to me -- and I'm willing to be patient with it. The elements of a good show are there if it lasts long enough to hit its stride.

Agree that Sleepy Hollow is better so far, though.

Im pretty much in the same position as you Ironrod.  I will also say that while Im liking Sleepy Hollow as well, I am a bit disappointed that theyve basically shelved the very awesome Headless Horseman since the premiere and gone with a monster of the week format.  Hopefully they change that soon but since they are only doing 13 episodes this season, they better be quick about it or they will run out of episodes.

I had this on my dvr and decided to catch up on it.  I was surprised at the improvements to the show.  It is much better than it was last season.  Its got more of a post apocalyptic vibe to it now and its really playing on how the characters are not either just good or evil. Theres a lot of both in pretty much everyone.  Even Monroe is a far more interesting character than he was last season.  After last season I really didnt much care if they renewed it or not but now I hope that they get the chance to run with the new direction they have chosen.
