Why is things like this on CNN?

I'll agree with you there.  It was on a local station here in Houston, but I don't see why this is national news.

Agreed. The news station could have saved us all the trouble by doing an internet search on the prom dress guidelines, asking her if she signed the form and returned it, and then telling her "Damn girl, you broke the rules, of COURSE you aren't going to the prom! We don't need to axe you any more questions!"

Is it using the rules for Axis and Allies Revised? The revised edition defines victory cities where each side controls 6 of 12. Then players can decide how many victory cities to play for. Playing for 8 victory cities helps keep the game from lasting forever. Plus the revised edition added artillery and destroyers and changed the eastern front to have more smaller territories.

If it uses the COD4 engine then we can finally witness the penetrating power of the BAR and .30 cal MGs. I'm hoping it does more shifting around to different services too. Perhaps flying as a gunner on the Dauntless dive bomber or shooting the AA guns while under air attack.

I don't think anyone is masturbating to their toons so the fact that porn is two clicks away really has nothing to do with it.

I sort of like the idea of a physically weaker female character wielding heavy armor, a big sword and standing toe to toe with male counterparts.  The contrast appeals to me.  Same kinda reason why a lot of people like the protagonist in Heavy Metal.  Or the Brienne character in Game of Thrones and she wasn't even hot so it's not just about physical looks.

I also like the idea of chicks w/ swords, guns, or who can generally kick ass. They appeal to me. The best is when I play a female character that then proceeds to kick some male character's ass such that the male player gets upset. Ahhh, Chun-Li, you were my go-to girl.

Gamespot has it listed for the PC as well as a couple of articles that mention it being released for the PC.

Heh. I need to visit gamespot more often. I tend to just visit IGN and they only show Endwar for the consoles. Someone also needs to tell ubisoft to update their official Endwar website: http://endwargame.us.ubi.com/ and put a "games for windows" icon up there.

not a good sales tactic, maybe - but far preferable to fawning, & kinda refreshing in it's honesty smile ...

In Madden 06 tournaments people would replace their kicker with micheal vick and run a certain fake FG play over and over.  It was cheesy as hell.  But it was a guaranteed 5 yards every play.  There will always be "ballers" who will find ways to win by any means, and "simmers" who want to play realistic football.  The problems come when the two communities mix. Most of the hardcore madden tournaments are full of "ballers."  Thus I have retired from tournament play  icon_biggrin

Okay, I'm confused. Bear with me because I'm really trying to understand. Before you said that against another player anything can be stopped if you know its coming. But apparently the hardcore madden tournaments prove that statement wrong? Even today?

If so, wouldn't that mean there is room for improvement in the play AI?

Maybe its changed recently but hasn't a persistent knock against Madden been that there is a core set of l33t plays that can't be defended against?

Not individual plays.  But techniques like throwing the ball high and outside to tall recievers on certain pass routes, certain blitz combinations, manual wr control, etc.  These are all things that the AI is helpless against.  Against another person anything can be stopped if you know it's coming though.

I'd like to read the article, but I am not an IGN insider.

Ahhh. Okay. So it has gotten better for Vs. play. I remember perhaps two years ago reading that the Madden tournaments were worthless because it was all about people who picked the cheesy plays and not about playing good football.
1341  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fascinating IGN article on the sorry state of Madden NFL Football on: March 06, 2008, 05:50:16 PM
Its interesting that while the article writer states he can win vs. the AI using the same plays he used for the genesis, not one of his suggestions involves beefing up the AI or removing the 'unbreakable' play.

I'll say this. $400 to play games = no sale, IMHO. So it plays blu-ray movies. Its still marketed as a game machine.

But $350 to play games = sale?

I can't understand this line of thinking. Is $50 such a huge gap?  That's less than the price of a game.  That's less (or the same) as a years worth of Live.

Why yes, $350 to play games = sale. That price made me feel better about spending my hard-earned cash to buy a next-gen console

That's right.  I'm always forgetting that the PS3 has no games.  Roll Eyes

You brought up the question about whether a $50 price difference is important. It IS for some people. There's something about a $400 price point that makes people say "OMG that's expensive" while a $350 price point makes them say "well, that's not too bad". I brought up nothing about the PS3 not having any games to play. In fact, I think it has some GREAT games to play! The $400 barrier is still a barrier to me and quite a few other people.

Just wait. When Sony drops the PS3 price to $350 or less you will see more people posting, saying "Hey, I just got my PS3! What games should I buy?"

from the "[360] price drop confirmed?" thread:

Son of a bitch. I bought my 360 on July 8th. They make the price cuts effective August 8th. One day after my 30 day price match from Circuit City expired.

No one jumped on the "hey its only a $50 difference, suck it up" bandwagon there.  Roll Eyes
More on the price cut:

Quote from: Purge
JCC, a price-drop is a price drop. Even the PS3 had a price drop, but the difference between a 80GB and 60GB is negligable; the difference between Core and Premium is significant. MS didn't say "PRICE CUT ... [3 day delay] *cough*cough*on_the_discontinued_model_only*cough*"

MS has priced the system lower, and not just on their lowest system. They've bundled extra in it on the premium AND priced it lower for good. It may seem a marginal difference, but it holds significance.

And as another example of one who bought a console after the price drop: (from the "Xbox 360 for dummies" thread)
Quote from: JCC
With the PS3 still overpriced at $400, and its list of upcoming games not appealing to me, I am considering a 360 now.

I've been having intermittent "fever" problems as well. Mainly it involves keeping the fever once it first starts. I think the key is to keep imagining the same song that the patapons sing when in normal mode in response to your drumbeat. Use that to determine when to start drumming again

I.e.
normal mode
you on keypad: [] [] [] ()
patapons sing: pata pata pata pon

once they get into fever mode
you on keypad: [] [] [] ()
patapons: blahblahblahblah! FEVAHHH!!!
you in your head: pata pata pata pon
once your internal song is done you start pressing buttons for the next drum command.

Note to Sony: you generally don't want to burn the early adopters.  They have the money and are willing to spend it.  Telling them "You should have known better" does not make them more likely to give you more money in the future.

Its funny that I just experienced the kind of weirdness that Chaz is talking about with my PSP. Its a hand-me-down PSP that I got from a friend. Unfortunately it was missing the headphone adapter thingie so I go to Gamestop to buy a new one.

"Um, are you sure this works with my older PSP model?" I ask the clerk. "Sure", he replies, "it says its compatible w/ the PSP 2000." Alarm bells start going off, but I ignore them. I mean, why would the interface for the headset change, right? There should be no good reason for it that I can think of.

Sure enough, the headset adapter is different. Its thinner and wider for the PSP 2000. Now why would someone go ahead and redesign that other than to require someone to purchase the PSP 2000 headset adaptor?

I also picked up the demo. Got it when I plunked down my $5 for a pre-order. The demo rocks! It only lets you play with three drum patterns, the last of which doesn't appear till the last stage in the demo. But still, it is quite addicting to make the drum patterns and watch the little guys respond to my commands.

The sounds they make and the drumming beat as they march or fight brings me back to the old Shogun:Total War game, when the Japanese troops would march along to the beat of a drum and shout "hoi!" in response to your commands. I'm guessing thats also the origin of their naming convention for the units, ex. yari is the japanese word for spear, yumi for bow, hata for flag.

I can see how multiple drum patterns would be a challenge in the heat of battle, especially if one wants to sustain the "fever" level - which is obtained by doing several successful drum beats in a row.

I'm one of those who practices a lot, especially if I have trouble w/ a song. I'll play it through in practice mode at full speed until I hit the part where I stumble. I make a note of what that section is called and then play that section over and over at 50%. When I get it down I play it over and over at 70%. Then sometimes I skip to full speed. If not, bring it down to 80% and repeat.

It works for me.

Invest in the top 500 companies that are tracked by the S&P 500. That way your portfolio becomes an index and starts coming back as soon as the US economy comes back. What, you don't have enough money to invest in all 500 companies? Invest in the S&P 500 exchange traded fund (SPY). Its basically a unit investment trust that you can buy and sell as a stock that tracks the S&P500 index.

Or alternatively invest in the top 30 companies that make up the DOW. Not enough money? Invest in the DIA exchange traded fund which does the same thing as the SPY, but for the DOW index.

Finally, if you think that even these indicies are too risky and that you may never make your money back, invest in guns, ammo, and a shelter, cause if people are scared of even these indicies then the US could be headed for armageddon.

So... IF they get a nuclear missile (they aren't going to use a bomb, since that implies being dropped from a plane, which only works if you can get something close to air superiority, which they can't)... it's going to be used as a nuclear deterrent.

When you talk to others in the region, nobody thinks having an Iran with a nuclear deterrent is that big a deal...

That's an interesting position. Its very similar to the NRA's argument. To paraphrase, "nukes don't kill people, people do."  So, is there any situation at all where you might think that country A having a nuke would be a bad bad idea?

Here's a thought: Israel most likely has a nuke as a deterrent against its neighbors from repeating stuff like the Yom Kippur War. What happens when everyone in the region has nukes? Wouldn't that then negate the use of nukes all around and open the situation for a possible gang-banging of Israel?

interestingly enough my playtime with the Brits in Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts has led me to read some books about the Commonwealth forces. Two that I've read and enjoyed were:

Eigth Army by Robin Neillands
Fortress Malta by James Holland

The Eighth Army book really changed my perceptions about the Commonwealth forces in WW2, specifically in North Africa. And raised my opinion of Bernard Montgomery. It also opened my eyes as to why these forces acted as they did. Commonwealth tactics and operations seemed weird when viewed from an American mindset but once I read how their officers and enlisted functioned it started to make sense. I don't agree w/ that structure, but now I can see why that army did what it did.

Fortress Malta was very enlightening. I'm surprised someone hasn't made a popular movie about this island's seige during the war. Lots of pathos, nail-biting tension, heartbreak, and frustration - then hope as the island defenders slowly battle back from the brink.
