2001  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / The Official Contest Thread on: October 09, 2004, 06:59:59 PM
(From Google's cache of Qbe's thread)

After some discussion in December, a number of GGers have chosen to resurrect The Contest of last year. After some debate and discussion we've settled on a set of rules which differs somewhat from the original Contest. For the enlightenment and amusement of those who aren't participating, here are:

The Official Rules of The Contest

The Contest is a vow of abstinence from new game purchases. Your purpose(s) in participating may differ from those of other participants, but your goal is the same: to be the last to spend money on computer or video games.

You will ante up a game when you enter The Contest. That game will go to the winner of The Contest.

The central rule of The Contest is simple: do not spend money on computer or video games. Any game related purchase (games, accessories, computer upgrades for gaming) disqualifies you from The Contest.

The Contest begins at 00:01 on January 1, 2004 and runs until only one participant remains who has not disqualified himself.

The Contest naturally must work on the honor system. You may be the only one who knows if you've disqualified yourself; your obligation is to inform the other participants and to send your ante to the winner of The Contest when one is determined.

Details:

Trading: in the original Contest, trading was the only method allowed for obtaining games.
Gifts: in the original Contest, receiving games as gifts was not allowed.
Game rentals: game rentals are not allowed.
Giveaways/freebies: in the spirit of "Pay it Forward Freebies", you may only receive a freebie game if you offer one up in return.
Participation: in order to remain in The Contest, you must post at least twice a month in the official Contest thread at Gone Gold Forum. This lets the rest of the group know that you are still alive and participating.
Demos/shareware/warez: demos are no problem, since they may very well get you inflamed and cause you to forfeit your game. Shareware is fine, but you can't register it. And warez/abandonware are right out. Don't even think about it. Ditto for emulation and illegal ROMs (i.e. those you don't legitimately own--and there's no such thing as "the 24-hour rule").
Freeware: If you have it, play it. If you download legitimate freeware, have fun. If you need to pay for it (e.g. January Computer Gaming World's DVD with 5 full games) after the contest begins, it isn't freeware and violates The Contest.
Continuing/subscription-based games: Participants in MMORPGs are allowed to keep or cancel their current accounts but may not spend additional money on nonrequired expansions or upgrades. OOTP players are allowed to upgrade when their league participation requires them to do so. Players of either type of game who spend the majority of their gaming time on such games should not enter The Contest; those whose participation in such games rises over 50% of gaming time should withdraw from The Contest.

This is the list of participants who've signed in, along with the games they've chosen to ante up (if specified):

Raven VII (new game)
dev/null (new game)
matt

Lord Ebonstone [withdrew 1/6/04]
ThomasCovenant [out 2/13/04]
Hipolito (Knights of the Old Republic) [out 2/15/04]
Lord Corwin [out 2/17/04]
Sudy Nym [withdrew 3/1/04]
warning (Temple of Elemental Evil) [out 3/19/04]
Andrew Mallon (Star Wars Jedi Academy) [out 3/30/04]
JR (new game) [out 4/5/04]
junkie (Tron 2.0) [out 4/8/04]
Qbe (Mafia) [out 5/1/04]

May the best man (woman, whatever) at avoiding temptation win!

Does anyone have the email addresses of Qbe and matt? To let them know that we've moved here for the time being? I don't want to "win by defaut".

I emailed Bill Harris, and he hasn't heard anything, either. He's got no idea why GG would be gone, since the ads were creating revenue and the place basically ran itself.

One thing he did suggest was that Rich might be joining a network as an affiliate, but I think that was a shot in the dark.

Curiouser and Curiouser.

If Gone Gold comes back as gonegold.ign.com I'm going to shoot myself.

Boom, page 11?
The only thing I really, really want is a GG-type color scheme.  And, if enough people migrate to make it worth it, some PC-Gaming forums.

Hear, hear!

But we should wait... it might very well not be the end, and I'm kind of hoping some GG'ers would team up and resurrect Gone Gold. There's some talk about that before in the forums, but seems no one really went and did it out of apathy - I admit GG took on a kind of a permanent feel. Sad to see we might be wrong. Again, if anyone's up to resurrecting GG (if it needs any resurrecting), count me in.

Well, this really, really sucks. When I couldn't access Gone Gold for two days, I feared the worst, and even resorted to installing the IRC client and going to #gonegold to see what's going on. I also suddenly remembered this site, so I came, and saw the thread. This really sucks, and if anyone wants to do something, count me in.

Glad to see old faces here though. Funny to see that I registered, and have more posts, than some of the old-timers here... biggrin
2006  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Thoughts about the new ConsoleGold site... on: May 21, 2004, 10:14:44 PM
I didn't look at your source so I just assumed. Sorry. slywink
2007  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Thoughts about the new ConsoleGold site... on: May 21, 2004, 10:03:02 PM
You already know my criticism of the site (it's over at the GG console forum).

But I have to post this after reading the above...

Making separate versions of sites to cover your audience is BAD web design! THIS is what CSS and XHTML is MEANT to do. Make ONE site that degrades GRACEFULLY over browsers and even mobile devices.
2008  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Sega's Explosive News on: May 07, 2004, 07:27:53 AM
Will Nintendo unveil the GameBoy DS in E3? If so, cover that, for sure!

And I ask - no DEMAND you to cover as much detail as physically possible on any new Castlevania game they may unveil!

I DEMAND IT!!!

2009  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / The "Discuss this topic in our forums" links... on: May 07, 2004, 06:43:33 AM
Maybe you would make a "News Discussion" forum where every news item you make also makes a topic there. No one can make new topics there, but can discuss the news topics. So the links in the news item would lead to the discussion thread. Just an idea I thought would be cool.
2010  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Forum Titles on: May 07, 2004, 06:38:29 AM
That reason sucks.

Doesn't matter to me really. I just want a custom tag at a certain point.

Why not do it like GG does?

Nooo, you allow non-members to post?

This forum will become a spamfest.

(The guest above with no name is me, BTW... I thought you finally fixed that stupid cookie timing out issue... guess not.)

2 hours? Is there a reason for that? Not even Gone Gold get visits from me every 2 hours!
2014  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Forum Thoughts Sought on: May 05, 2004, 06:27:47 PM
I still want that general chat forum! smile And I think "Console" should be eliminated from Road to Gold and the trading forum.

Otherwise, it looks great.

But I do have a small problem... for some reason the board wouldn't keep me logged in. Every time I leave the forum and come back, I have to login again.
2015  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / WELCOME! on: May 05, 2004, 04:49:58 AM
Seriously, you ain't gonna do a general chat forum?

A tiny suggestion: remove the "console" from the Road to Gold and Game Trading. If you want to be on your own, separate from Gone Gold, act like it. People who come here should know it's all about console gaming. Gone Gold didn't have "PC Road to Gold" did they?
2016  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / WELCOME! on: May 04, 2004, 01:13:37 AM
I'm SO pissed I didn't get member #50!!! I saw the latest member to join, zrrgin, was #48, and thought, "oh, gotta hurry to get #50!", and what did I get? #49! Tongue ... hey! Where's the clown smilie! I DEMAND A CLOWN SMILIE!

And Knight, read my criticism on the sticky over at GG... I don't feel like putting it here. smile

Looking towards to being a veteran member of this forum 2 years down the road! I never got the chance to be one at GG. Here's mine at CG!

Arrgh, I want that 50...  :x
