1961  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Blade Runner Revisited [spoilers!] on: October 13, 2004, 10:08:51 PM
I only saw this movie once, on the Sci-Fi channel to make it even worse- and I didn't get it at all. Sure, I got the story and what happened, but basically I thought the movie sucked.

Guess I'd do myself a favor and check out the director's cut.

I have a love-hate with my crazy metabolism. This is one of the instances where I love it. I drink soda everyday, eat junk food at every chance I can get.

And I can't get myself to gain ANY weight. And my cholesterol test came back saying I'm in excellent health. HA

Wouldn't it be just beautiful if Half Life 2 was delayed, and PC Gamer turned out to have reviewed a game... a year before it was released?

1965  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / R&P Decision on: October 13, 2004, 03:21:59 AM
KD, I'm one of those who disagreed with your ban on R+P discussion.

But I'll have to say that I'm much happier with the clarification. Many of us, including me, wants EBG back. The freedom of discussions of anything we want is the reason I stayed ag GoneGold. I went there at first for the game discussion, but EBG is what kept me going there. I agree with Poleaxe that EBG is the heart and soul of GoneGold.

With the clarification/revision, I hope Off Topic will become the EBG of old, pre-R+P Forum days, where we debate politics and religion in EBG, yet the R+P threads never flooded the forums. Our inability to moderate ourselves is evident when it became so overwhelming that Bill made the R+P forums, but with the tight moderation here, perhaps a split won't be necessary.

While I largely disagree with your refusal to set up a R+P forum, I will live with it, and demand it again some other day :p slywink

For the GG archive/database... here's an idea... how about you set it up, and leave it open to everyone, only for a limited time, say, for two weeks or a month or something. That way we all will have a chance to go in, salvage all the threads/posts we want, and transplant them here if desired. After that is done, I don't think a GG archive will be needed much longer. This seems like a good compromise for us and money.

I like your ideas DarkEl. That'll definitely convince me to change my bookmark from the forum to the site itself biggrin

I am aware that creating forums is very easy (I have experience administering a PHPBB board), so I didn't feel bad if you should do a frankenstein-izing GG and CG into one forum. Reinstating the GG mods to their respective forums to make it feel like home would be cool! biggrin Nah, it's completely up to you.

After reading Stephen's post, it seems it's permanent. So I'm definitely sticking around.

(Away with the media forum! biggrin)

EDIT: Refreshed the main forum page, and BAM! PC Gaming Forum. Maybe I missed that before. Remove Media, add R+P and move Hardware Hell up to the first category (makes more logical sense to me) and it's perfect.

1971  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / EVERYONE READ PLEASE on: October 12, 2004, 02:47:24 AM
All right, here's my take...

Firstly, like all the others, I'd like to thank you for your generosity towards the GG'ers who came here.

With that out of the way... What accommodations would I want? There's a few... A separate PC games forum... Maybe a forum separate (General Console Discussion, Console Games by Title, then General PC Game Discussion and PC Games by Title). I'm not sure about the multiplayer forum, since it seems to be quiet enough for both, and the lines are blurred anyway. Add a Hardware Help/Discussion, and designate it for hardware discussion of both PC and consoles (the Nintendo DS vs. PSP thread over in the other forum would belong there, for example). A R+P forum (I don't visit often myself, but political discussion is inevitable, and that's what many Gone Golders stay for - the political/religious duscussion, and I feel that it's unfair to keep that away). Maybe a Weekly Value forum.

Yeah, basically a merging of the GG forum and the CG forum into one. What you want to do with the front page is entirely up to you - the GG community thrived without the front page for years, and I feel that the lack of frontpage content kind of contributes to the GoneGold feel. Dunno, maybe I'm just mad slywink.

Lastly, I don't want to say this, but what you said is true. If someone gets the Gone Gold Forum database, and resurrects the forums, somewhere or on gonegold.com itself, I will be gone, as will many of us. Sure I will come back occasionally and lurk, like I has in the past. But not actively post like I do now, and will if this turns out to be permanent. It's the people I post with, not the site, if you know what I mean. You did an amazing job with Console Gold, and I applaud you for the job well done. But it's not for me.

One more final note: If this turns into a truly permanent thing, we're refugees no longer, and are actual contributing members of this forum. So don't feel like you're "accommodating" the Gone Gold people - we are former Gone Golders who has came to post here, and as strange as that may sound, we are the majority here now. So you're changing to suit your audience if you will. It's just the wise thing to do smile

Again, thanks.

1981  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / So what monthly fee would you pay for the GoneGold Forums? on: October 11, 2004, 05:15:56 PM
If it's mandatory, and you have to pay monthly to read/post in the forums, then I won't pay anything. But if it's donation, for something that I feel is worth it to the community, then I will pay up to $100 if necessary. It's all in the reason.

And that reminds me, what happened to all the donations you guys did for the plaques? I remember Rich saying he didn't touch it at all. If he did indeed cut'n'run on GG, wouldn't this be considered take-and-run?

Found the thread cached on Google and posted the first post above, with the particpants and the three remaining contestants. Hoping anyone would know matt and dev/null's email addresses to let them know we've moved here for now. If no one could reach them, the Contest would be considered over, and I would be considered the winner. I don't want anyone to send me any games, since I won by unusual circumstances, and I don't think it's fair to send me the games that I didn't really win.

In any case, it had been fun, and I hope it would live on.

If that's indeed what going to happen if the death of GG is indded permanent, Ron, that would be really awesome of you. Though "Console Gold" would no longer be appropiate, would it?

A suggestion/idea (don't want to step on any toes mind): maybe keep this forum as it is, and have a second forum (not necessarily using your bandwidth), a Gone Gold forum reconstructed from what we can get from the database (even if it is a bit old), and the two forums can cross-link or something.

Yeah, that's just me wanting to have the new home as close as possible to the old. slywink

1997  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / The Official Contest Thread on: October 09, 2004, 06:59:59 PM
(From Google's cache of Qbe's thread)

After some discussion in December, a number of GGers have chosen to resurrect The Contest of last year. After some debate and discussion we've settled on a set of rules which differs somewhat from the original Contest. For the enlightenment and amusement of those who aren't participating, here are:

The Official Rules of The Contest

The Contest is a vow of abstinence from new game purchases. Your purpose(s) in participating may differ from those of other participants, but your goal is the same: to be the last to spend money on computer or video games.

You will ante up a game when you enter The Contest. That game will go to the winner of The Contest.

The central rule of The Contest is simple: do not spend money on computer or video games. Any game related purchase (games, accessories, computer upgrades for gaming) disqualifies you from The Contest.

The Contest begins at 00:01 on January 1, 2004 and runs until only one participant remains who has not disqualified himself.

The Contest naturally must work on the honor system. You may be the only one who knows if you've disqualified yourself; your obligation is to inform the other participants and to send your ante to the winner of The Contest when one is determined.

Details:

Trading: in the original Contest, trading was the only method allowed for obtaining games.
Gifts: in the original Contest, receiving games as gifts was not allowed.
Game rentals: game rentals are not allowed.
Giveaways/freebies: in the spirit of "Pay it Forward Freebies", you may only receive a freebie game if you offer one up in return.
Participation: in order to remain in The Contest, you must post at least twice a month in the official Contest thread at Gone Gold Forum. This lets the rest of the group know that you are still alive and participating.
Demos/shareware/warez: demos are no problem, since they may very well get you inflamed and cause you to forfeit your game. Shareware is fine, but you can't register it. And warez/abandonware are right out. Don't even think about it. Ditto for emulation and illegal ROMs (i.e. those you don't legitimately own--and there's no such thing as "the 24-hour rule").
Freeware: If you have it, play it. If you download legitimate freeware, have fun. If you need to pay for it (e.g. January Computer Gaming World's DVD with 5 full games) after the contest begins, it isn't freeware and violates The Contest.
Continuing/subscription-based games: Participants in MMORPGs are allowed to keep or cancel their current accounts but may not spend additional money on nonrequired expansions or upgrades. OOTP players are allowed to upgrade when their league participation requires them to do so. Players of either type of game who spend the majority of their gaming time on such games should not enter The Contest; those whose participation in such games rises over 50% of gaming time should withdraw from The Contest.

This is the list of participants who've signed in, along with the games they've chosen to ante up (if specified):

Raven VII (new game)
dev/null (new game)
matt

Lord Ebonstone [withdrew 1/6/04]
ThomasCovenant [out 2/13/04]
Hipolito (Knights of the Old Republic) [out 2/15/04]
Lord Corwin [out 2/17/04]
Sudy Nym [withdrew 3/1/04]
warning (Temple of Elemental Evil) [out 3/19/04]
Andrew Mallon (Star Wars Jedi Academy) [out 3/30/04]
JR (new game) [out 4/5/04]
junkie (Tron 2.0) [out 4/8/04]
Qbe (Mafia) [out 5/1/04]

May the best man (woman, whatever) at avoiding temptation win!

Does anyone have the email addresses of Qbe and matt? To let them know that we've moved here for the time being? I don't want to "win by defaut".

Hear, hear!

But we should wait... it might very well not be the end, and I'm kind of hoping some GG'ers would team up and resurrect Gone Gold. There's some talk about that before in the forums, but seems no one really went and did it out of apathy - I admit GG took on a kind of a permanent feel. Sad to see we might be wrong. Again, if anyone's up to resurrecting GG (if it needs any resurrecting), count me in.
