I bet this is just a Virtual Boy to them - an experiment with something different, just for the hell of it. I think that a bit after the PSP launches, they'll release the true successor to the GBA, and own the PSP.

Can you build a computer for $200 at It doesn't matter how crappy the components are, even an integrated graphics motherboard would be great. The only requirement is that it have a CD burner.

Let's see what you guys come up with!

You do know that the '3200' in Athlon XP 3200 doesn't stand for it's MHz, but for it's performance as compared to a P4... right?

TOP quality, even better than Alienware. And largely ignored for some bizarre reason. Too expensive? Have a look at their Talon line!
1886  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Some games (and a couple programs) FS/FT on: November 24, 2004, 11:45:41 PM
Console games: All in near-perfect condition, with manuals and jewel cases.

Bushido Blade
Tekken 2
Tekken 3

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Sonic Adventure
Soul Calibur

PC games: Games not in as good condition as the console games. What I have will be noted next to the game titles:

Alpha Centauri: Game box, jewel case and manual.
Baldies: Jewel case (broken hinge).
Blood Omen Legacy of Kain: Game box, manual and jewel case.
Duke Nukem 3D: Game box, manual and jewel case (jewel case has a missing hinge).
Mafia: CDs only; no box or manual.
Serious Sam: Jewel case and manual
Star Wars Dark Forces: Game box, jewel case and manual.
The Sims: Jewel case only
Ultima Online Renaissance: Game box, manual and jewel case.

Macromedia Flash 5: Box, jewel case and all the documentation.
Paint Shop Pro: Jewel case only.
Simply 3D: jewel case only.

I'm willing to sell or trade anything on there. I'm interested in vintage games in the Mega Man series, Metroid series and Castlevania series, Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, games in the Resident Evil series. As for newer stuff, let me know what you have for the PS2 and Gamecube, and we could work out a deal. As for cash, let me know what you want and I'll give you my price - totally negotiable!

One more question... the 3.0 GHz P4 is $180, while the 3.2 GHz P4 is $215. Is it worth $35 to move from 3.0 to 3.2? (both are socket 775 Prescotts).

I'm working on those as well Tebunker.  If I could get a steady stream of those I'd go games-only and never look back.  Its hard to put us and Penny Arcade in the same boat though. smile

I'll look into the scrolling to the side thing, those ads shouldn't have broken that.  As for donating to the site, I've got a paypal account setup with the email address [email protected] for that sort of thing if you are inclined.  smile

The scrolling isn't an "problem" with the ad per se, simply that the CG logo and the ad side-by-side is wider than my window, and that forces the whole page to be as wide, thus scrolling. A simple fix would be to move the ad under the logo, or modify the logo to make it a bit smaller.
1891  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Video card Question on: November 23, 2004, 02:46:20 AM
I recommend the 6600 GT if you're upgrading. It's $200 (a bit more for AGP), and delivers a great bang for the buck.

Hey, I'm not savvy on those kinda stuff, but I do plan on taking advantage of this if I can... how do you know how cheap they're going to sell them for? Is it like, you sit in a audience, and bid, and hope it stays down? If that's so, wouldn't that take forever for every one little thing? Or are they going to sell them in loads for thousands of dollars to people who have alots of money?
1893  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [CG] Ad Banners on: November 23, 2004, 02:13:21 AM
I don't mind the ads at all, but can you reposition it a bit maybe? Or make the CG logo on the top a weensy teensy smaller? I have my browser window at 800x600 (I multi-task alot, and it's nice to have space on the desktop for other windows), and that ad cause me to have to scroll sideways, which I loathe.
1894  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Help me with my upgrades! (Moving to SFF) on: November 22, 2004, 07:35:19 PM
I have:

P4 2.66 GHz 533 MHz FSB
512 MB DDR2100
80 GB Seagate SATA HD 7200 RPM
9700 Pro
52x48x52x CD-RW

What should I upgrade? I'm thinking:

upgrade to Athlon 64 3200+ (seems like a good sweet-spot CPU, $150 at newegg... I've been out of the loop for a while, so if there's a even better bargain bang for the buck, let me know, I don't really care whether it's a Intel or an AMD)

A GF 6600 GT (AGP if I go with AMD, PCI-e if I go with Intel), $200 at newegg, seems like an sweet deal for a great performer... but is it worth the upgrade from the 9700 Pro?)

either 512 MB or 1 GB of DDR3200 RAM (I think my 266 MHz DDR stick is/will be a bottleneck).

Also, what SFF case do you recommend? I like either the Shuttle XPC cases or the Soltek Qbic cases. I want one that looks nice, have a cover for the drives and stuff. USB and firewire on the front would be nice too, but not necessary.

Hmm...for only the second time in my life I am not excited about a new console release. I had a chance to pick one up at Best Buy on Saturday and passed it right on by. That is the only second time in my life I have ever passed up a chance to buy a console on the first day it was available, the other time was the Atari Jaguar. I even got a 3DO for christs sake!

The Nintendo DS just seems....rushed. The launch lineup is really not impressive at all. The only game I am even remotely interested in is the new Super Mario Bros game, but that won't be out until late 2005.

I honestly think the Sony PSP looks much more impressive.

Just my 2 cents.

Forget the 3DO, you even got the Philips CD-I? Or the infamous N-Gage?

EDIT: sorry, I'm just messing around to see how the "edited by..." below the post works.

Yeah it's pretty much run 'n' gun, infused with a cool noir story. There's some jumping, not that much though. It contols like a FPS, just in third person. I'm sure you get the idea. I have no idea how well it controls on consoles however. I suggest you to go read some reviews for more detailed information.

EDIT: Well, what do you know, our very own Console Gold has a review here.

1903  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Hey guys, help with my dilemma! on: November 21, 2004, 05:10:41 AM
I don't think they're expensive at all. I paid $30 for my PSU, $100 for my case, and $100 for my mobo. That adds up to... $230. Not much of a difference.

If I do decide to go ahead with this, I plan to spend about $500 plus whatever I can get from selling the unused components on the project. Basically, I have $500 to spend, and whether it goes to the PC, or to new games for the consoles, DVDs, etc, is the question.

Quote from: "Daehawk"
Why? The only difference it will bring is size. And it will cost a fortune so if you have a working tower why bother?

If you read my post, you'll know. The tower is big, heavy and unwieldy. I can't bring it back and forth between home and college, and I don't have room in the car for the tower. So I basically only get to use it 4-5 months out of the entire year. Right now it's sitting at home, collecting dust until my Christmas break when I'm bringing home my monitor. (It's a LCD, and I can fold it flat, so it's about as small as a laptop once flattened. I love it).

Whether or not I should upgrade it isn't the question anyway; it's either I sell it/get rid of it, or downsize it.
1905  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Hey guys, help with my dilemma! on: November 21, 2004, 01:56:59 AM
I have a PC tower, right? Well, I don't use it much. I do most of my gaming on consoles those days.

So I'm thinking of selling my PC. I've been doing all of my computer stuff (browsing, email, etc) on my Mac now.

HOWEVER, this season was a whammy of PC games that I want to play. Rome: Total War, HL2, WoW and more.

So I'm thinking of dumping the tower, and converting it to a Mini-PC so I can easily transport it between college and home. Problem is, it'll take money. Probably lots of it, since I'll probably be forced to upgrade much of my components, due to the many new architectures today (different CPU slots, different graphic card slots, different memory slots, etc). My dilemma is: is it worth it just for gaming? One side says NO, it's just games, just stick to consoles. The other side says HL2, HL2, HL2, HL2... biggrin

What do you guys think I should do? Any ideas how to do this cheaply?

The game (like CS:Source) supports widescreen displays as well.

Oh excellent! Subtitles-less games is the bane of my existence. I hated Half-Life for that sole reason.

I applaud Valve for putting subtitles in this one. I'm sold. It'll have to wait until next week however, I left my PC at home. smile

Normally I wouldn't touch a Dell product, but you gotta admit, this LCD looks sweet. I don't like the audio bar thingy either, but the good news is, it's removable. Notice the S-Video-in there... That means I can ditch my crappy TV. And it's only $800, and knowing Dell and their crazy coupons, I could probably get this for $600 or so.

I'm seriously considering buying this.

I must ask why you wouldn' ttouch a Dell product?

I'll continue to build my own computers, but I've found them to be pretty darn good for the money for family and friends.

All right I'll give you a not-so-subtle hint.

1914  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Microsoft to release three versions of Xbox 2 on: November 12, 2004, 12:29:25 AM
I think the XBox Next-PC rumor is suspect...

Remember Microsoft made a deal with IBM to make chips for them for their XBox 2/Next. And those chips are based off the PPC970's (better known as the G5 in Apple computers). Those processors are RISC-based, not x86. Thus, Windows cannot run on the processor, at least not natively. And even if they port Windows to the PPC platform (it has been done before), it'd still be useless because no software will work on it!

... there seems to be some confusion here.

The original film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is based on a book called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They changed the title because Gene Wilder/Willy Wonka is the main attraction of the movie, and they wanted to reflect that.

This, however, remains faithful to the book by calling it Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But it's still a remake, or "re-imagined", as they like to call it, of the original.
