The one thing people tend to forget when the free PS3 online vs. $50 Xbox 360 online component debate is brought up:  Sony will have the developers/publishers setting up and running the servers (and taking possible monthly fees to keep said servers up, MMO or not) that the game plays off of.  Microsoft sets up and runs the servers all the games run off of through Live.  If Sony were to take everything internally like Microsoft has with its online component, then the free vs. $50 debate can actually be fought.

I added that bold because it seems to get lost in the translation that the developer/publisher has every right to ask for a monthly fee to keep online going for a particular game on the PS3.  It probably won't happen with big publishers until it becomes obvious that the loss of money to continually run the servers far outweighs everything else.

Also alot of the games you could play online with the ps2 for free were laggy as hell.

And I have a rough guess as to the number of units available for the Wii preorder:

My store (one of many here in Arizona) got in 8 (well, 6, as 2 were held for employees) PS3 units.

They're getting in 14 Wii units. Now, this number might be 16 (based on how employees could hold 2), but I can't confirm that. I do know how many units they'll have though.

So...this might mean that since my store was a low PS3 store, the 14/16 units is the low number for the Wii. The high number might be twice that (like the PS3 was), but I don't know for sure.

I do know that 14 is the magic number though for my place.

See you all in line tomorrow. I just don't know how early I'll go.

EDIT: From my friend across the country, apparently they outright told my friend (which they aren't supposed to do) they're getting 36 Wii consoles. They don't have many EB/Gamestops in the area though, so that looks to be the high number.

Hey destructor you live in Arizona?

It's on sale at Fry's electronics for $24.99 starting tomorrow bet it extends thru the weekend.

Are there any big blu-ray movies being released alongside the PS3?  After all the hooplah about the PS3 being a great value because of the blu-ray player, and everything Sony has riding on the format, you'd think they'd want to have a giant pile of eye-candy movies released on the same day.

I'm not sure what those movies would be, but X-men I-III, Spiderman I-II, Star Wars I-VI, and all Pixar movies would be a good start.

Especially the Pixar movies, I can hardly imagine how good an entirely digital movie would look.  Stick a PS3 showing blu-ray Finding Nemo or Cars in 1080p in every Best Buy and Walmart in the country and you might actually get people to agree that a $600 PS3 is a good deal.

have any of you guys seen the bluray players they have playing at some bestbuys on samsungs hdtvs I think they look like crap imo.

I'm still waiting on which of the new gen will have that killer game I just have to have. 360 has some nice stuff but nothing I HAVE to play.

Personally I think PS2 is gonna hurt PS3 big time this xmas. I mean with all these great games coming out now for the PS2 it sort of takes the edge of the need for ps3 now.  Personally I am really looking forward to Bully next week, and Guitar Hero 2 on the 7th.

The older I get the more I realize also, that when it comes to games, whats the rush?

Yeah, but you can play all those games on the PS3 as well....in 1080p!   icon_biggrin

Yea thats all and good but how many people have 1080p enabled tvs about 0.5% of the population of hdtv owners?

All of this years and future models will have it. Mine has it. It's 1080p native.

The Sony KDS 60A-2000: http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=G0HScDClDETSJXWJI8rYe3-o9uiaYLz5c08=?ProductSKU=KDS60A2000&Dept=tvvideo&CategoryName=hid_tv_newbravia

Oh and here is something funny....a guy put his preorder up on EBAY for $8,000 :icon_eek:, but forgot to blackout his name and phone #.....yikes.

mine has it too heres my tv

You only need the first two if you want to use the other races in multiplayer.

Follow the advice of jblank and others here. Waiting another 30 days is much better than regretting your purchase 6 months from now. I'm Mister Instant Gratification, but I FORCED myself to postpone my purchase until I could afford the Sony SuperFine Pitch HDTV (the last run of their finest CRT models). It was a hellish wait, but I'm pleased with the results.

Quote
Just remember that on an HDTV, regular tv actually looks worse than on a standard-def set.  So if you have cable but it isn't digital with HD delivery, watching regular tv will be a bit disappointing.

This is absolutely true. Regular TV and cable take a significant hit on an HDTV set. Even DVDs tend to look somewhat worse. The flaws are much more easily seen.

but when you watch a hdtv broadcast especially sports its worth spending the money to get a quality set. btw I use an hd 30 inch sony widescreen crt set for my 360 gaming love it.

Impressions finally..  Although my time ingame is very limited so far, only 1 part of Campaign, and 1 skirmish map.

Fantastic engine.
Great Graphics
Music is fantastic.
Lotsa maps, some are huge!
3 Playable races, 2 non-playable (expansion?)  Each plays entirely different!
Strong Tutorial
Huge amount of units, upgrades, tactics.

The bad:
Crappy manual, 25 pages of garbage.  Black and white.
DVD is REQUIRED to be in the drive throughout play!  A really lame move that screws over people that play on the lan in the home.
Can't find a way to turn down or off the HDR..

I have to tweak settings, as the sounds seem subdued, while the music overshadows it.  I suspect this is adjustable.  One thing I really like is the new Race (Dragons) is a heavy steath, trap, sneak and range race. You can order your units to "Bury" themselves so they become invisible, and can make surprise flank attacks - FANTASTIC!

So far, I am overwhelmingly positive about the game, the DVD being required in the drive is really really weak move on the part of the publisher, and will result in people rapidly seeking nocd's to enjoy the game without the CD.  Thats my only major complaint at this point, but it is still early in the game.

More impressions later.

damn burying just like the zerg in starcraft now I gotta track me down a copy how do I explain it to the wife when I just got coh lol. Roll Eyes

Quick question...and I'm not meaning to go off-topic here, but a couple of folks in this thread have compared this to BFME2.  I tried the demo for BFME...and found it to be just another same-ole', same-ole' RTS.  I didn't really see any innovation between that and RON, or AOE or anything else.  What did I miss?

Actually thats kind of a bad comparison because in coh you can use cover and flanking the enviroment is totally destructable oh hes hiding in a house level it  taking cover behind bushes burn the bushes down with a flame thrower unit.

I'm a bit late to the party.  I downloaded the demo from the PC Gamer disk.  It looks like a great, fun - if tactical - game.  I'm very tempted to buy it, even though I don't much like RTS games.  I tend to quickly lose interest in them (though I liked Medieval: Total War).  I only have two complaints.

1.  It's awfully fast.  I don't have the dexterity to keep up with it.  It's hard.  I've played the Carenten scenario through 3 times...and only on the last did I get the Medal (with 15 seconds to go).  Part of the problem is that my defenses were rather effective, which blocked the bridges.  People couldn't get around the burning tanks to attack me.  Then, of course, I get hit with the artillery...and things get very ugly at that point.

2.  The demo runs like a dog on my system (AMD 3.2, 1G RAM, X1800 Pro video card).  It's not so bad when the action happens, but the load times are horrendous...I'm talking minutes here.  Now, to be fair, the demo says it's not optimized.  But I'm wondering if those really do speed up on the real release.

Now I'm not likely to spend $50 on this game, especially since I won't play it multiplayer.  The single player scenarios aren't worth $50 for what (or so I've read) is about 20 hours of gameplay.  But it has captured my imagination like few prior RTS games.

your specs are better than mine and I have no problems running the retail version you also know you can use the pause button?
