1  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (07/19) on: July 22, 2010, 03:46:18 AM
Dark Star One (360) for me.

And I thought I would be the only one in the world not really interested in StarCraft 2. The creaky old gaming rig just couldn't handle it and upgrading just isn't in the budget..., plus RTS games just don't do it for me anymore.

I hope it's good for those who do indulge though. It's been awhile comin'.
2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The RPG vs. FPS time sink paradox on: May 26, 2009, 06:32:21 PM

Quote from: Kevin Grey on May 26, 2009, 06:08:49 PM

For me it's a matter of pacing- most RPGs have a variety of activities to do.  So one night I may feel like pushing the story forward, another night I may feel like doing sidequests, another night it's grinding out levels/skills/jobs, etc and maybe another night it's playing around with some kind of crafting or fusion system.  So I can better tailor the play experience for my mood each night while still playing the same game.

With a FPS or another action game, the experience tends to be far more consistent but that also means that being in the mood for something different means selecting a different game.

We have a winner!!

For those of us who share in the paradox, this sums it up quite nicely. FPS's can have variety (environments, opponents), but the activity is basically unchanged. RPG's generally allow you more latitude in how you play right now/today.

There are always exceptions and a well executed FPS can have more variety that a lousy RPG, but the design intent is different.
3  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Sacred 2 finally gold! on: May 26, 2009, 06:12:56 PM
I really liked Sacred on the PC but I never managed to finish it (for whatever reason), so I knew I wanted this one and it's pretty much what I expected. And since Blizzard doesn't seem inclined to bring the 800lb gorilla of this genre to the 360 (or any other console), I'm really glad Ascaron brought this out. I'm about 15 hours in and I feel like I haven't even scratched the surface (although I have done about all the side quests in Chapter 1).

KD's review is "nothin-but-the-truth", but Holy Crap it's addictive! I want to go back to playing right now! thumbsup

I don't know about you guys but that one's taking forever for me to 'unlearn what I have learned.'

This is an important point, especially if you have played a lot of PC Civ(s). You really need to read those descriptions and see what buildings/advances/wonders/etc. will actually bring you. It ain't necessarily what you think eek

But even with having to re-learn Civilization, it's still just a lot of fun to play!

And for those of you who like Civ it but lose interest (PC version), or have never finished a game..., you will finish this. And you'll probably want to start over as soon as you do.

Unlike some of the more recent PC games, supposedly Sid Meier had a significant hand in this console version. If so he definitely hasn't lost his touch as one of the "gaming gods". Civilization:Revolution is the finest strategy game available on the current generation of consoles.

Second that. I don't think Civ:Rev will stop me from playing CivIV, but it definitely has that "one-more-turn" quality.

Yes things move a little too fast, and no, there isn't as much control for those of us used to the PC version(s), but it's still a great game in it's own right. I'm sure they're trying to cast a broader net and I feel that the game succeeds remarkably. I was a little skeptical given the graphics and the Sim/Pirate-ish spoken by the in-game characters, but in the end it's still Civilizationthumbsup

I don't know how you feel about them, but Ebay seems to have everything you're still looking for (IWD, HOW, & IWD II), in some cases all from the same seller.

I had all 3 on my trade/sell list (back when I still had one), but there were no takers at the time so that's where I ended up selling mine.

Madcatz for the original X-Box!

These things were smaller than the big controllers, came out before the s-type, felt and responded amazing and were significantly cheaper than the MS ones! I ended up buying several of these.  thumbsup

Later versions had buttons that lit up (and stayed that way while the console was turned on), making it easy to show someone how you're performing a move (since the projector works better in the dark) and also making it really easy to figure out which controller is plugged in.

Still using them to this day and no complaints whatsoever, except for the fact that I'm probably coming off like a Madcatz salesman or something.

This is the wireless controller that I settled on (after trying offerings from Logitech and Pelican) to replace "Gigantor". Very pleased, in fact so pleased that when my first one died after about 5 years of pretty intense use, I bought two more on Ebay (one to use and one in reserve since they don't seem to make this controller anymore), and I'm still using it to this day. The newer offerings from MadCatz (for Xbox) just pale in comparison to this unit, IMO.
18  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Favorite Controller Poll on: July 15, 2007, 09:09:55 PM
Yes..., well..., ahem...

I love the 360 controller too, but I voted for the Gigantor, or The Duke as it is also known.

I know everybody else hated that controller, mostly for it's size. I never understood that. My hands are decidedly average sized and The Duke fit me like a glove. The button placement and the overall "feel" were just about perfect for me. I had to stop using it because we had kittens at the time and I was pretty much forced to go wireless (not that I regret that).

Wonderful concept (that's what sold me), but I'm a little disappointed with the execution. There's a great game in there, but there are just too many annoying little problems (and one not so little problem). Definitely a "B" title in it's current form.

I don't seem to be as far in as many of you, but I like this game.

But I don't love it because...

I've already encountered a bug (the Minstrel), and according to some posts over at the Ars Technica forum I'm not alone. It seems to be a situation that's not universal and may be solved by merely trying again, but after 4 attempts a little frustration has set in.

This game is badly hurt by not having a mini-map feature. As some of you have already mentioned, this omission seems almost unbelievable. It's caused me no end of backtracking (too).

When it's being good, though, Overlord really can be a lot of fun.

An awesome end to an awesome game. Goshdamnit I really want to play this game. It might be time to do it.

Believe it or not, the first time I started it (back when it came out) I just couldn't get into it. I did have the flu at the time so I can claim a lapse of judgement, or maybe it was the medication.

The History Channel and History International ran a bunch of Star Wars themed programming earlier this month (for the 30th Anniversary) and that got me thinking I ought to give it another try. I couldn't believe how good that game was(is). I played it every night for over 3 weeks and I wish it hadn't ended. I cannot recommend it highly enough, even with it's technical issues (don't overwrite any old saves - delete some old ones if you need to make room, but always save "new"). Do it Man! You won't regret it!

The only reason I haven't started KOTOR2 is that I know it will end too quickly and if it's anywhere near as memorable an experience as KOTOR, I will need to wait a good long while before I replay it.

And who knows when/if there'll be KOTOR3?

Anyway, thanks for the reply CeeKay. Since you're up, is what comes after worth pursuing? Borrowing someone else's disc, or maybe getting mine re-surfaced (I tried cleaning it)? From what I've been able to learn online, it doesn't sound as though there's too much afterwards..., although after putting in 79+ hours, I'd kinda like to see everything.
28  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Xbox] KOTOR Ending - Possible bad disk? Need info! **Spoilers** on: June 25, 2007, 07:42:37 AM
I know it's not likely that anyone would still be playing KOTOR (besides me that is), but just in case...

Spoiler for Hiden:
I defeated Malak; Carth and I run to the Ebon Hawk; I see the Star Forge Destroyed by the Republic Fleet; the EH appears and we get a fighter escort; the Republic Admiral radios that we'll all get a hero's welcome when we get home; and... nothing. Black screen. I can hear some sounds if I hit some buttons, but no visuals. In fact the only way to exit is to eject the disk. What am I missing? Is it worth trying to beg/borrow/steal somebody's KOTOR disc to see it? I've searched high & low online, in many forums (LucasArts, Bioware, and anyplace else that looked promising), but I never found this particular issue addressed. Is this a bug, or do you think I have a bad disk?

Any help and/or information would be greatly appreciated.
29  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Come on down! It's Bob Barker's final show! on: June 21, 2007, 08:48:50 PM
I've been watching Bob on and off forever, starting back in the Truth or Consequences days. Daytime TV just won't be the same without him.

My gf and I have been discussing this at length as we watch every day (aaaahh the joys of working from home!), and we have come to the conclusion that John O'Hurley would be the perfect choice as Bob's successor.

He has game show experience (Family Feud), he's known but not extremely well known, and the silver hair would be a comforting familiarity icon_wink

A disturbance in the Force however... This from the Rosie O'Donnell entry in Wikipedia:

O'Donnell has expressed an interest in replacing Bob Barker as the host of CBS's long-running game show The Price is Right. Barker was a frequent guest on her talk show and had told reporters that she "would make a fine host," and O'Donnell will be meeting with CBS and Fremantle officials to discuss the situation. Although previously reported he had "endorsed his friend Rosie O'Donnell as a possible successor" a follow up news report stated "he never meant to imply she was his top pick to replace him. It would be "terribly presumptuous" to assume he would have any impact on the host selection." Barker added "I haven't even seen all the tapes of the candidates," and said that he has no role in choosing his replacement.

No offence, but if Ms. O'Donnell is tapped, I'm gonna have to find something else to do at 11:00 AM Eastern.

I haven't seen this one, so I'll submit Star Wars: Rebellion. That's going back a day or two, but I remember having such high hopes...

Also, and this may be something of a limb I'm crawling out onto, I was let down by Heroes of Might & Magic V. I really thought Nival could rescue the franchise (a personal favorite through III) but HoMM:V just never did for me. The 3D overhaul struck me an example of something being done just because it could, not necessarily because it should.
