lol.... someone should setup a shop for odd numbers of points paying what they cost + a small priemium....  What i mean is you can gift points... right?  so if I bought 1000 points.... and you need 40.... paypal me the $.50 (800/10= 80pts=$1) and I could gift you the 40 pts.... that solves the problem!

Everyone knows the BCS system is a complete crock o' shit, but congress has much more important things to be doing.

i completely agree with with this... however.... it is going most likely going to get dealt with one way or another...  I find it interesting that several major sports/ systems are being investigated on grounds of anti trust laws.... you have this possible investigation and the litigation dealing with the NFL in the Supreme Court....
84  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / congress wants reveiw of the BCS on: January 30, 2010, 01:56:48 AM
There is a story on ESPN right now about the current BCS system for college football.  The issue at heart is if the BCS violates anti-trust laws by not having a playoff system.  The issue was brought before the White House by Sen. Orrin Hatch-R Utah.  Hatch was disgruntled that Boise St. was undefeated and yet wasn't afforded the opportunity to play for the national title. By selecting other teams, who have more exposure to play in high profile games, universities who might be deserving of a bowl game or national title shot are left out.

I feel that this is a huge problem in all of college sports but especially football and basketball.  By having systems which are subjective and solely at the discretion of the NCAA, teams which are deserving are not afforded the opportunity to play because they are not as well known as other programs.  With football it is not having a playoff system with set and established guidelines for entry; with basketball, it is the at large bid process (their are no real guidelines for who get selected.... fill it out by teams with the highest RPI instead of random...(Missouri State University with an RPI of 21 is the highest rated team to fail to get a birth into the NCAA tournament)....

So what do you think should happen with the BCS as it relates to ant-trust laws and should the administration or congress be pushing for the change?

How can you say you are way over-qualified for a job when you have little or no actual job experience?

educationally-- I have been told by recruiters/employers that my level of education moves me into consideration for higher grade jobs.  Because of that they won't hire me for jobs I would be willing to take at a lower grade to get "entry level experience".  Their thinking is that I will leave once a better job opens elsewhere, which may or may not be true.  I guess it would have been better to say educationally over qualified....

The example was the corrections recruiter wanted me to be a CO in a jail.  Educationally that only requires a HS diploma.  When I have gone to school and taken Grad work in Homeland Security and Defense I am educationally way over qualified for a CO job.  The recruiter told me that if they hired me for that position, he would expect me to leave very quickly because my of my educational level v. the work...

91  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Job Hunting--Government jobs--UPDATED on: January 24, 2010, 08:59:41 AM
I am bringing this thread back from the dead for an update:  Found out Friday a couple of things... when it rains... it pours...

1.  So my primary focus has been on applying to the local police department.  I found out that I had passed the original application and qualified for the position.  I scheduled by physical agility test on the date they provided (I got to kinda pick a time).  Assuming that I pass that the written test is later in the afternoon.  So at least I will know more on that front soon.

2.  I found out that an application I had put in on the federal level actually made it to a hiring official.  I talked to the HR lady and she told me that it at least would get me an interview.  This was an interesting position to apply for and has surprisingly good odds.  In the hiring process they advertised that they were only accepting the first 400 total applicants from the status and general announcement for 100 openings.  I got my app in the day that they posted it and was qualified so I made the referral list.  (I guess there is something to be said for working my butt of the get the app in quickly)....

Outside of this I don't really know much new... job hunting right now blows because I am in a bad catch situation.  I talked with one recruiter for the state who told me I needed to go into corrections to get basic experience for an entry level investigative position I was interested (and already qualified for based on their posting...min was a college degree in any field).  Considering that I am completing (may 2010) a graduate program in homeland security I asked if I was over qualified for that... to which he replied, "oh yeah, but you need experience... and most of our guys only have HS diplomas so you might be able to move quickly"...  I just hope that something works out and I'm not "forced" to take a job I am way over qualified for and would hate... but that is the story of life... well the whole "i'm smarter than my boss and don't get paid nearly enough for what I do and/or am qualified to do"

When I purchased the system I also purchased the 2year replacement plan at BB.... I could just walk in and get it switched out since it isn't under manufactures warranty anymore.  I know this is a dumb question but who thinks I should take it in and get it switched out?

I have had systems only last a week.... but my latest has lasted a year and a half....Although it is starting to act funny... it sounds like it is going to eat games when I turn it on, I have started to install games on the HD to prevent it and am considering taking it back in to BB under their warranty

I have had RROD a couple of times.... the dvd drive fail a couple of times.... I have had the video card and mother boards fry..... overall not very good luck except that I purchased the 2 year replacement plan at BB..... best $50 i have ever spent

Items received
Parentheses--- so that it does the look up first (damn algebra rules)
Find the same value of PO on Sheet 2 within range a1:B6, return the value located in the second column (items shipped), find an exact match

I might have done it in reverse of how you asked the question....

I could care less about this as well.  However, I do think the quote from Ben Franklin fits well here:  "He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither."

yes this is a continuation of Bush's policies and the Patriot Act, taking away freedoms as a result of fear not rational thought.  That being said, I don't feel that America's air travel will be any safer with full body scanners, this will just be a perception.

This was an incident from an international flight.  Passengers on international flights into the US are supposed to have the same levels of security.... but that is unrealistic.  The American flying public shouldn't be scrutinized anymore because of this incident.  However, there are those who scream that Obama is to blame for this (Dick Chaney) when in reality it is just an issue with air travel security from international destinations.  Keep in mind this flight originated in Amsterdam.... not some American city where American screening techniques are established.

Really, you're talking about premises liability and the concept of "reasonable care".  Essentially, it's incumbent on a commercial property owner to make sure their property is safe.  However, that's not absolute.  They usually have to know there is a problem and have a reasonable amount of time to fix it.  Furthermore, it must be something that can be fixed with reasonable care.

This is where my question really was.  The maintenance individual who called me back stated that they knew of the problem and that it has happened before.  However, he didn't salt because if he had it would have just melted and refrozen (as was what caused the issue to begin with).  They had cleared the lot once and had failed to salt.  During the course of the early evening it refroze into black ice.  Again, he didn't salt because it, in his opinion, would have just refrozen.  To me, reasonable care would have been to properly salt the parking lot to avoid icing, which since this incident they have salted and the lot is perfectly clear.

My issue was that they knew of the problem and refused to act because of what I interpret as wasting money salting when they believed it would just refreeze.

Er, how exactly did this happen?  7 cars?

Well the first two were an infiniti and a truck.  The infiniti slid, apparently and made it into a parking spot.  The truck slid into the front passenger side moving the parked car.  The truck took off after leaving a note.  Later my GF and I slid side by side.  Last an SUV slid into the back of another car which then hit another parked car.

The accident was a result of the parking lot being frozen.  There is an incline from left to right in the parking lot.  As it was iced over, any car attempting to go that direction was going to slide right to left.

When I called the management answering service maintenance called me back.  He said that they couldn't do anything and that this happened last year (which I never remember it happening).  He said that they could have put ice melt on it, but that it would just refreeze so there was no point.  I asked that they notify residents so that accidents wouldn't continue to happen or block off that section of the parking lot and he refused.  Security and I stopped 6 or so more cars from attempting to enter that area.  Security finally demanded that someone come up and address the issue.

I have attached a sketch.  Keep in mind the lot slopes right to left.

The orange car got hit first and the truck took off.

Then my gf and I slid side by side.

The blue cars were all involved when the outside car hit....

Edit:  Just talked to my insurance and lawyer.  Insurance and lawyer agree that there was negligence on the part of the apartment complex for failing to address a safety issue on their property after claiming they knew the issue could exist.  However, it is unlikely my insurance company will subrogate  the damages to the insurance company because the damage amount won't be high enough to make it worth it.
117  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: accident--who is responsible on: December 27, 2009, 12:58:59 AM
hmmm... my though was similar to that of someone falling on the ice.  Really, I am not sure... I have gotten mixed opinions on the issue..  I would think it could be different from an accident on a street because it is private property... therefore it is the responsibility of the property owner to ensure safe conditions....
118  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / accident--who is responsible on: December 26, 2009, 11:49:18 PM
Last night I was involved in a 7 car accident in the parking lot of my apartment complex.  The only vehicle I struck.... luckily.... was my girl friends.  No one was hurt.

The incident occurred because on black ice and an incline in the parking lot.  Basically i slid sideways into my gf's car.  I called the answering service and the maintenance man called me back and said there was nothing he could do (block it off, salt, or anything) and that everyone was gone.  He also said that this happened this time last year as well and that it will continue to happen.

My thought is similar to falling on ice (except for the getting hurt part).  They failed to maintain the lot resulting in an accident.  This wasn't caused by driver negligence as the vehicles slid sideways into each other.

I am planning on calling my insurance on Monday.  I really just want her car fixed.  Mine was basically fine.... she drives a saturn which is basically a plastic body.  My car is metal... therefore her's took most of the damage.  So who should be responsible to foot the bill?

I have attached a photo.  My car is on the left... hers on the right.  Some of you my see a red car behind us (their plate is bright in the flash)... we both missed it which was involved in a three car.....

120  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Internet/ ISP support on: December 22, 2009, 05:48:34 PM
For the past 3 days I have been having problems with my internet.  My ISP is ATT.  It all started during a round of COD MW 2.... I started dropping connection.

Being smart enough to know the first thing support will have me do is power cycle, I power cycle the modem.  Sure enough my connection works.  15 min later.... connection drops.  This time I logged into my modem and run the self diagnostic.... PAP authentication to local sever fail.... this gets me to call support.

1st call to ISP:  Well sir, I see nothing wrong with our system.  Power cycle all equipment.  I explained that I already had and it restored service, but that it didn't hold.  He says to do it anyway so I did.  Connection restored.

Later in the day:  Connection Failed PAP

2nd Call to ISP:  This conversation started the exact same way except that I rehashed the conversation I had and the steps taken with the 1st tech.  To no avail this tech wanted me to power cycle.  At this point I say I wanted a manager.  He has me change some settings in my modem... connection restored... (only because it made my modem reset)

Next morning connection failed PAP:

3rd call:  I immediately ask for tier 2 support.  So I get a tech who is willing to run a line test and sure enough my signal strength to the ISP was only 60%.  He creates an automated trouble ticket to the system to attempt to restore service.  Call back in 30 min.

4th call:  The tech sees all the issues and determines the best option is to rip my connection from the servers and rebuild it.  He also believes that my router needs to be isolated from the modem.  I thought he was full of shit because my router has been working perfectly fine for the past 9 months, it is functional and not having errors.  Plus my connection info is stored on the modem, the router is only acting as a DHCP server.  Connection restored with the router in place.  Lasts 12 hrs.

Fast forward to this morning: 5th call to ISP support: 2nd to the line maintenance dept:  I see the problem.  Weak signal strength and the solution is another rebuild in the servers.  The tech said since this is the second rebuild in as many days the card on site was probably bad, but as those are expensive to replace we will see if this holds.  He also says he doesn't think it will fix the issue but it might help get someone to do something else when it fails again.

So here I am with a connection that I doubt will last 12 hrs right before the holiday.  I know some of you are/have ISP support experience.  Is there anything I can do that will get them to actually fix this?

Edit:  6th call to tech support:  Requested a tech.  Surprisingly one will be here today by 5 pm CST

Edit #2:  The tech was here.... he replaced my modem... which didn't work so he replaced part of my phone line.  Let's see if that works....
