41  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Anyone ever have Gall Bladder Surgery? on: August 08, 2010, 01:25:57 PM
had mine out 2 years ago.  I had lost about 30 lbs when I first got sick... it really sucks.  Now I have occasional problems when i eat certain types of food.  For example, yesterday I ate at Hu Hots (a Mongolian grill).  It gave me diarrhea and stomach cramps about an hour later.  My best advice is to (obviously) avoid the foods that trigger you.  You should be able to eat just about anything, but the first couple years might be rough.  Personally, I feel like I am just starting to get to where I know what I can eat and really only have a diarrhea episode once or so a month.

Either way, i recommend the surgery.  Learning to not eat McDonalds is far better than being in constant pain.  The surgery only lasts 30 minutes and you will be up walking around the same day.  I only took the pain pills the day of the surgery and the day after.  After that I threw them away...  I have four tiny incisions on my abdomen which healed in about a week and a half.  I probably wouldn't recommend going back to martial arts for a couple of weeks (keep in mind they cut through the abdominal muscles).

If you are looking for possible alternatives to the surgery I have heard acupuncture is good for gallbladder disease.

I'm a total glutton for punishment.  I had it done, and then had it reversed slywink

The original was the "No-Scalpel technique", which was very simple.  No general anesthetic, local only.  My only regret was not taking the pre-op sedative.
The reversal was microsurgery, therefore done under general anesthetic.  It worked, but it was definitely the worse of the two.

Good luck!

ouch... going back for round 3?

The fact that every republican voted against it along with 30+ democrats shows Obama cares nothing about bipartisanship or reaching across the isle as he said during the debates.

It looks like that that bastard Obama is going to get even *less* bipartisan!  Via The Hill:

Quote from:
Democrats shouldn't expect much cooperation from Republicans the rest of this year, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) warned Monday.

McCain and another Republican senator decried the effect health reform legislation has had on the Senate, a day after the House passed the upper chamber's bill.

GOP senators emerged Monday to caution that the health debate had taken a toll on the institution, warning of little work between parties the rest of this year.

"There will be no cooperation for the rest of the year," McCain said during an interview Monday on an Arizona radio affiliate. "They have poisoned the well in what they've done and how they've done it."

God, Obama makes me so mad!  Why won't he work with people who flatly refuse to work with him?! mad

Via The New York Times:

Quote from: The New York Times
In recent days, [Republican Senator Lindsey] Graham warned that immigration reform would be the "first casualty" following the Senate Democrats' efforts to complete the health care bill via a fast-track reconciliation vote. And he also predicted GOP gains this November. "Republicans will pick up a lot of votes from people who think this is bad for their business, their family, and the process used to pass it was sleazy," Graham said over the weekend.

Graham attended several briefings last week on the climate issue with major industry trade groups and senators, but his remarks about the health care bill nonetheless prompted speculation off Capitol Hill that the entire legislative effort could soon be over because of his wavering.

Obama again!  I'm so sick of the way he fails to negotiate with people who announce ahead of time their refusal to negotiate! mad mad

Quote from:
Authorities in Wichita and some other cities across the country are investigating vandalism against Democratic offices, apparently in response to health care reform.

And on Monday, a former Alabama militia leader took credit for instigating the actions.

Mike Vanderboegh, of Pinson, Ala., former head of the Alabama Constitutional Militia, put out a call on Friday for modern "Sons of Liberty" to break the windows of Democratic Party offices nationwide in opposition to health care reform. Since then, vandals have struck several offices, including the Sedgwick County Democratic Party headquarters in Wichita.

"There's glass everywhere," said Lyndsay Stauble, executive director of the Sedgwick County Democratic Party. "A brick took out the whole floor-to-ceiling window and put a gouge in my desk."

Stauble said the brick, hurled through the window between Friday night and Saturday morning, had "some anti-Obama rhetoric" written on it.

See what your lack of bipartisanship made those people do, Obama?  Do you?!?  Your sinister insistence on holding straight up-or-down votes means that violence is on *your* conscience!! mad mad mad

The only thing Republicans want is for Obama to meet with them in good faith, listen to their ideas, and to resign the presidency and concede the 2008 election to Sarah Palin.  Is that really too much to ask!? mad icon_mad mad icon_mad

well said... I laughed my ass off earlier when i heard McCain say that he wasn't going to do anything the rest of the year.  Yet he is up for re-election... So basically he is going to collect a huge government pay check, sit on his ass and refuse to do anything.... like the kid on the play ground who went home because he lost....

The republicans are such bad losers... it isn't even funny.... I don't recall democrats ever refusing to work when Bush was in office.... I don't recall windows being broken or tea-bagger conventions when Bush's approval ratings were in the upper 20%... or members of congress having to apologize for outbursts and breaks in decorum because they disagreed with policies... hell how many republicans have had to apologize for shit they said in violation of decorum??... republicans need to get over it...

I am definitely watching other domain names because if nothing else I can park it and do a re-direct.

LOL well i will put in the COC part... and since I am not really pimping my site or anything...and this definitely isn't my first post

 Pimping your Website
This is not a place to pimp your personal website, Myspace page or Ebay auction - it's a place for people to share ideas and have fun.  Occasionally mentioning a personal website is probably acceptable, repeatedly mentioning it isnít.  Have enough sense to become part of the community before you test this theory - your first post shouldn't be about your site.

so... my website is

I am not a chef, but i do have a degree in hospitality and restaurant administration and several years of restaurant cooking experience.... like i said... I know it isn't perfect.... but i am working on it.  As you can tell... it is about cooking for one person  nod yes i have a girlfriend, and a life, this just seemed like a fun thing to take on.

I've let it soak in more and am probably going to take the job.  It is a good opportunity in a field with stability... I don't really care about the money (having benefits will be the best part)......

As for the PD there is too much about our local pd that leaves questions... they are really hurting for money right now and have had some financial issues/ are currently in a hiring freeze but they have us going through the process because the anticipate greater revenues from a new sales tax.... there is too much stability questions with this position.... I am still going to talk to the guy... but.... I don't see me passing up my opportunity with the state
61  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Job Offer!!! on: March 12, 2010, 11:38:44 PM
As many of you know I have been looking for a job now for over a year.  I have been in the process of getting on with my local pd now since mid-December.  About 2 weeks ago, I was called for an interview with the State's Attorney General's office investigating Medicaid Fraud.  Today I got the call from the HR person with the state and now have a job offer.

You would think I would be excited... but I'm not (but I kinda am interest).  I'm not sure how I feel about this offer.... Ideally I want to end up as a federal investigator and not just a paper pusher in an office somewhere.... I know that health care fraud will be a huge area since health care reform/ government take-over of health care/ whatever you want to call it is going to happen.

The draw main draw back is... they didn't offer me as much as I was hoping/what was in the announcement (I know it would be more then i am making now), and I have to move to a part of the state I don't really like.... (no disrespect Jarrod...(it's the area he is from)).

I would really want to be a police officer where I currently live/ have friends/ have family... but they are still in the background check phase and aren't really sure how many people they will be able to hire....

The job would start basically ASAP... which would be as soon as I could find someplace to live... (and I would have to pay rent in two places until July)... so i just don't know

63  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Need some advice on suit shopping on: March 05, 2010, 12:38:03 AM
I would say ignore what is said about pleated vs. flat front pants.  Get what looks right on you.  Every pair of flat fronts makes my junk look huge (which... well... different topic). pleated fronts are far more comfortable for me and look way better..... I have tried flats at every suit store and every associate has made the same observations... they simply don't fit me right....

I would recommend looking at suit separates.   My last two suits were both this way and I was really happy.  Basically, the jacket and pants are sold separately.  So for me, being 6'2'' 220 with a 36 waist... I wear a 46 R or 44 Long depending on the manufacturer.  The problem when i buy everything together is that the pants start at a 40-44 in waist for that size of a jacket.  Once they tailor the pants down that far, they never are quite right.  By being able to buy the larger jacket and the smaller waist pants separately I have virtually removed the need to tailor anything.
64  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Job Hunting--Government jobs-UPDATED on: February 27, 2010, 05:35:31 PM
well I have a couple of pieces of news to report:

Yesterday was a good day on the job front.  I was greeted with a morning phone call from an agency I had forgotten I had even I applied to (that's how many positions I have applied for).  It was in the State's Attorney Generals office investigating Medicare and Medicaid fraud.  Outside of that, I have really no clue what they actually do (as in are they in the office doing nothing but paperwork or are they in the field conducting investigations and arresting people)... I have an interview for that this next week.

I also received a phone call from the local police department telling me that I had passed the interview and would now be moving into the background check stage.  During the interview they asked what the worst thing they would find was... and i am boring and have absolutely nothing.  So I am not worried about that process at all.... So i should be moving on in about a month.

This whole job hunting, being an unemployed grad school student, not having direction really has sucked... hopefully it is coming to an end soon...

If anyone has experience with attorney general investigators and knows a little more about what they do please tell me!!!  I know it will vary by state but still....

well if you never changed it from the original info you look it up... for example netgear is user admin password password......  If nothing else you can always reset the router to the default by holding the reset button for about 20 sec then power cycle it... that will return it to out of the box status though....

Edit:  damn... I was a little slow
68  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Router not letting me on the intertubes on: February 25, 2010, 06:17:23 AM
ummm.... there are several different things....

First I would change the Ip of the router to something else... just in case it is causing a conflict with the modem.... for example mine is instead of the default .1.1 ending...

I would probably also just try restarting the router and modem (if it is a cable modem this usually fixes the issue) turn both off for about 20 sec then start with the modem.  Once it is up, turn on the router....

Make sure your router is configured properly to connect to the modem.... ie static ip, dynamic, pppoe....

Really modems/ router connections can be a pain but usually solved by resetting in the right order... I messed with a friends for about an hour before i realized that her cable modem and router needed to be turned off and back on.....

I am tired of the way congress has become so polarized in playing politics that they aren't doing the work of amercia... republicans can claim that they are by blocking legislation, but in reality they aren't....

Try and hold several different handguns/shotguns. You want something comfortable so don't base solely on other peoples impressions everyone's hands are different. You could also try going to a range that rents out guns so you can actually shoot the specific gun or something similar. I have heard great things about the new Springfield XD series. I haven't personally tried one though, I would like to.

you are absolutely right... guns feel different in different hands.  Also another thing to look at when purchasing a hand gun are the sights... do you get a good sight picture.  I shot a glock the other day and absolutely hated the sights...

XD's are great guns... as I have said, I have one and love it.  It is easy to take apart and clean (another issue to consider) and it shoots well.  I think i have had 1 failure to eject a spent casing and it was because a friend had a limp grip... I have probably put close to 2000 rounds in it...

Well theres a real nice store out in Benton.

Was looking at a couple Mossbergs. Not sure if it would be best to go for a full stock with pistol grip or just the tactical pistol grip type. it is just for indoor use in case of break in. I do not hunt these days.

These are based off the model 500.

The 6 shot capacity is kinda worrisome. Bit they are 18" barrels.

I have nothing but good things to say about mossberg shotguns... my roommate has a 500A used primarily for skeet shooting... but it is a very good good with little to no maintance (except cleaning)...

As for suggestions for the OP....

Shotgun is good for home... be careful on what you load it with if you live in close proximity to neighbors or live in a duplex/ apartment (you don't want rifled slugs which will penetrate multiple walls).....

As for the pistol...

avoid hi-points... if its not a name brand you recognize don't buy it... Personally I have a springfield XD 9 which will run you 450 new... glocks are ok... sigs are good... I would avoid purchasing at a pawn shop..... find a reputable dealer in your area who sells used guns if that is what you are looking for... that or look for a local gun show (knew what you want if you go to a show... it will save you a lot of time and money)

Next consideration would be deciding what size you want... Go with what is comfortable in your hand, but keep in mind if you get your carry permit you have to be able to fully conceal it.  I would recommend a compact or a sub compact.  Depending on the gun you purchase, you may be able to get magazines that have extended grips on them.  Having a subcompact with grip extensions works well if you want to carry in an ankle holster but your hands are too big to otherwise comfortably control a subcompact.... (my pinky hangs off the bottom of subcompacts making the weird to shoot without extenders... I attached a picture of what it looks like with the extenders...)

Ammo.... is expensive and it sucks balls to buy unless you are buying a .22..... thats just the way it is... I would buy one box of hollow points and hope you never need to buy another.  Target ammo can be picked up at walmart or a gun shop... personally a $20 box of ammo at walmart for 100 is the way to go.

I have a simple writing question for anyone willing to give me an answer.  I was writing an assignment that was supposed to be in 3rd person.  I ran into a small problem because the questions guiding my response required opinion statements to be made and support by me.  How can you write an opinion statement in 3rd person without passing the opinion statement off as fact?

I had always been told that opinion statements needed to carry a statement such as "in my opinion" or "I believe" or "in my beliefs", or carry a citation to credit the author with their opinion... but this is contrary to the 3rd person style?

Bottom line was I fixed the suggestions by removing the above mentioned phrases... but I felt like I was passing my opinion off as factual statements when in reality they were just opinions.
