ok... tried the 14.5x with no prob and then upped it to 16.5x with no prob so far... thanks again for the help.

trying to read more about overclocking... do some of these cpus have extra cores that might be viable to turn on?  or is it not worth the risk?

if i ignore the core part of this... what would be a reasonable  multiplier beyond 16.5 to try?  any links to a website with good info on overclocking appreciated - my googlefu often gets me into bad spots with bad info.

and to anyone interested in the progression of frames per sec in gw2.

processor at 800 and only onboard graphics:  <1 fps (had to login to the game to reserve my name - couldn't wait due to the bs short timelimit on names - it was brutal at 1 fps)

bought a 550 with 2gb w/processor at 800:  20-30ish fps (actually it might have been 15-25 - i honestly dont want to go back and check lol)

processor at rated 1650 (3300) w/graphics card: 50ish fps

but still puzzeled by the 800mhz... even with gw2 in windowed mode never going higher... so i am going to try your settings.

It's 800 MHz because that is AMD's "safe default". It's the lowest multiplier on the lowest bus setting. It's not Cool 'n' Quiet making the CPU slow, it's that your BIOS doesn't know what to correctly set the core/bus speeds at. It will never go higher than 800Mhz.

Quote
but before i do, i understand we are going to try and set to 3300Mhz to "overclock" it to its max setting (when i went to performance it gave the option of setting it MUCH higher than 16.5 3300Mh) - where is the 2000Mhz coming from (2 processors at 1000 each or something else)?

if i tried 14.5x first as a test... what should i choose for the nid?

"Back in the day", you would have to set the processor information manually with jumpers. You're just doing that in the BIOS (they don't have those jumpers anymore). We aren't overclocking: you're manually setting it to factory specs because your BIOS doesn't know what they should be automatically.

The factory specs for your processor are 3.3Ghz CPU speed (the "Core FID" setting of 16.5x) with a 2GHz HT bus (The "NB FID" setting of 2000MHz). If you set the "Core FID" setting to something less than 16.5x you should still set the "NB FID" setting to 2000MHz.

Yep I understand we aren't overclocking - that was why i put it in quotes.  Thanks very much for explaining stuff in detail.  The reason why i was considering "overclocking" at a lower rate (yes i suppose that would be underclocking)... was that if the mb wasn't able to set the highest rate then maybe it wouldn't work well at the highest rate... there was also a message saying something about if i overclocked and couldnt see the bios at load up that i would  need  to clear CMOS.

So i was thinking it might be better to take baby steps first - since this is my first time doing this.  Thanks for clearly explaining everything... I am working like a dog, so i might not be able to try it until the weekend.  I will try to update here how it goes.

Quote from: Calavera on September 01, 2012, 11:48:06 PM

Set the Core FID to 16.5x if you can (according to the manual 14.5x is the highest)
I was thinking of trying 14.5x first because manual said it was the highest... i wasn't sure by your quote if that was the highest possible setting or the highest possible safest setting.  Either way... i thought it might be better to start off smaller.

Your MB doesn't support that processor so it's clocking it as safe values. If you look on the CPU Support tab, the Phenom II X2 560 isn't listed.  You're not the only person to get caught by Newegg's deal:

Quote from: Newegg Review
BAD Combo Deal with X2 560
Pros: None.

Cons: I got this in a combo about a month, it came with a Phenom II X2 560. Be aware THIS IS NOT COMPATIBLE with that processor. No where did i read that it wasn't. It's the only processor in the Phenom II family that's not compatible. The only way to get the processor to work is to void the warranty( which I don't want to do) and "overclock"( really clocking it to what it needs to be) to get it to run anything over 803MHZ(not GHZ) I am VERY disappointed in this, I've never had problems with Newegg until now.

Other Thoughts: Contacted Newegg service, and they say they're not responsible for Combo deals that are not compatible, so why would they have combo deal on it? Not to mention, I would have to pay for the shipping to return the mobo to them.

Manufacturer Response:
Please see Biostar website for CPU support for this model.
http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=506

note: 803 MHZ may be AMD cool & quiet or what is now referred to as Power Now. A feature to save energy when the unit is not doing anything strenuous. If you don't like this feature, you can disable the "Power now" option in bios.

I love that the manufacture's response is partially bad information, it's not CnQ that is at fault, it's that the CPU isn't supported.

You're going to have to tell it the correct information because the BIOS doesn't know. Just set the multiplier to 16.5x and make sure HyperTransport is set to 2GHz and you should be good to go.

In your BIOS, it should work like this (based on the manual on their site, I don't have this board)
Under the Performance "tab" goto AMD Overclocking.
Set the Core FID to 16.5x if you can (according to the manual 14.5x is the highest)
Then set the NB FID to 2000 MHz.

That should get you close to the factory speed.

thanks for your response... sorry i am so late in replying - crazy work schedule and computer seemed to improve to reasonable speed after adding a graphics card...

but still puzzeled by the 800mhz... even with gw2 in windowed mode never going higher... so i am going to try your settings.

also... it looks like it is reporting the 803Mhz for each processor (2 core)... so am i really getting 1600Mhz?  or should they both be going at 3300?

imagine my surprise after putting together a new machine (new parts anyways) to replace my 7+ yearold computer to find out it is slower than my old computer (acting like a dog when doing anything but websurfing)

when i bought my motherboard and cpu - i thought they were positioned in advertisements to work together (newegg).

but instead of 3.3Ghz i am getting 800Mhz  <--- this part might be answered now - idling mode?  but machine still acts like a dog in games

(update -  got the nvidea monitor program installed rock steady at 804mhz even when in LoL - at 4-10 fps - it should nudge up for that game right?)

I took my gaming PC with me when I went back to Indonesia a couple of years back in my checked luggage and it survived OK. I made sure to cover it with clothes so it wouldn't get too banged up but I left all the parts inside, just made sure they're all tight before I packed it.

My dad also carried a PC back with him in his checked luggage a few years ago and we took apart the video card, ram, hard drive, etc, and that too survived the deal.

i removed the harddrive and dvd player and put them in my carryon... wrapped my desktop in clothes to help cushion it... put some ductape on the corners of some parts to help keep them in... wrapped up wires pretty tight so they wouldnt fling around

and i got a friendly card from tsa saying they examined my bag lol

i am typing this on the desktop in my new town...  only problem is i plugged in harddrive only and it seems like it triggered the "genuine windows validation program"

I was able to activate my windows via the popup (since my computer changed significantly??  all same parts except for a new keyboard), but MSE is saying that it still isnt genuine

UGH  (this winxp)

flying back to the city i just moved to...

trying to figure out a way to move it (desktop computer) without shipping it by fedex... I was thinking about removing the harddrive from the desktop box and carrying it in my computer bag (less jostling around).

then putting the desktop in one of the two bags fly free deal in checked baggage - with the hard drive removed it shouldn't be too horrible a ride for the box right?

I will probably give the screen to a neighbor and just buy another one - need to upgrade anyways.

anyone had this situation before (moving by airplane)? - in the past whenever i moved there was a truck or car that i loaded up myself.  in this most recent move it didn't make sense to hire a truck to move just a few things that i cared about.  better to just throw out (give away) the old crap and buy (less) new crap.

Not that I'm giving anyone a pass on bad AI. But have some perspective on this. Chess AI isn't all that special.
Honestly I thought my point was clear that Firaxis would not use the moves that the pieces were DESIGNED to use in their AI.

Quote from: Turtle on July 01, 2012, 10:57:15 AM

Most of the amazing chess AI you hear about like the IBM one actually have a big team of programmers working on it after every match, correcting for mistakes. They can't learn on their own that well.
There was a pretty cool mod - iirc it was called genetic AI (or something like that) - for cIV.  You would send in your reports post game and the various AIs were graded on performance - and either tweaked or not.  It is a shame that firaxis didn't do something similar for this game (an opt in for people to send post game reports to a worldwide database to gather data on successful game AI settings).

if the AI is as bad as has been reported in ciV- why aren't people adjusting the AI code themselves?  has it been locked down?  (or is there a file somewhere similar to the one in cIV that is fully moddable)

If you have a hangnail, do you carry on like you broke your arm?  If you have a broken arm, do you carry on like it's terminal cancer?  That's Chick's reviews in a nutshell.

I don't want to turn this into the Tom Chickenshit thread, but just realize how far out of the mainstream he is on his reviews.
I could understand the review if he is grading civ on a curve... if a child (new indie) makes a nice game with flaws - do you encourage him?  If the grandfather 30-40 years experience CONTINUES TO MAKE THE SAME MISTAKES OVER AND OVER - do you want to say not good enough (they should know better by now)?

I bought ciV on one of the sales but my old machine won't play it well (it almost crashes on the intro movie but just plays the game too slow to deal with it)...

I am shocked(!!) that the were not able to make a game that could play with units they designed (cIV had a similar issue with the game not being able to fight using planes/ships/etc at launch, iirc cIIIv also had similar individual unit issues at launch and continued to have submarine and other issues when it was "complete").

Firaxis should know better by now.

If they can't make the game play with planes at launch they need to stop putting planes in their games... make us buy the plane expansion AFTER they worked all the kinks out  Tongue

just curious - has anyone had the AI win a game (or attempt to win a game) in more than one category?

Quote
Sometimes I wonder if Firaxis is playing their own game.
from the chick review... I think that about alot of companies...

I also wonder what would happen if the Firaxis AI Strategy Programming Department would do if it programed a chess game?

The ai would never use the pawn diagonal move
The ai would only move the queen one square at a time
The ai would never move the knight... I mean cmon! Jump 2 and then one to the left or right?  THATS CRAZY!!!

the last episode was absolutely brilliant... if any of you haven't bothered with the show - this one might be a good one to jump on

I'm loving season 2 so far, although the lack of action is definitely noticeable.
If they're going to make the episodes all about talking, scheming, back stabbing, and politics then we really need 2 hour episodes as they go by way too fast.

If you're watching Game of Thrones and expecting action, then you're better off with something like Spartacus to be honest. GoT is a political drama through and through. There isn't really supposed to be any focus on action, not in the books
except that some of the best swordfights I have read have been in those books...  if you know of any better described fights than the inn or the trial... then i want to read them (hmmm that kind of sounds obnoxious... its not meant to be that way though... seriously I love to read a great sword fight - open to suggestions)

heck! even the tyrion fights were pretty awesome... and so far i think they have avoided showing his fights

which might make the next episode seem to come out of nowhere - unless they make it so he doesnt fight again

almost a full book early (and takes some of the emotional impact of that scene in the book away... i would have liked to see the actress play that scene - but unlikely to happen now)

Spoiler for Hiden:
If you're talking about Aria's victim, then yes it was an entire book too early, actually since it happens towards the end of book three it was probably two seasons too early, and I was really looking forward to her killing him in that scene too, if I remember the book correctly she repeatedly stabs him with needle after she steals it back from him.

yep - book spoilers
Spoiler for Hiden:
screaming "is there any gold in village - where are the brotherhood - how many were there?" as she stabbed him

for me the dogs swordfight and her reclaiming her weapon was almost as big as the wedding scene... it was a HUGE payoff in story telling for me as i was reading it for the first time and on subsequent readings

its also why i was worried that she might be too old unless they pushed up filming of all her scenes for the next two seasons early in next years production - you could easily argue that she ages overseas for the purposes of the tv series but she is still super young at that point in the books

if they didn't have weese in the tv series they could have had a nameless cohort of tickler and saved tickler for later... the killing of tickler in the books was awesome... in the tv series -- eh

Spoiler for Hiden:
She's actually the Jeyne we know from the books, only she's "undercover" for one reason or another which is likely to be revealed soon. Robb might end up in the hay with her, and only afterwards realize she's a noble. His honor will force him to marry her, which leads us to the events we know from the books.
well i was more worried that she was a character made up out of thin air to replace the character in question...  seems like a silly way to introduce the character (if the speculation is true)

What does bother me is I just read the episodes are shorter this season.  I thought I was imagining it but it seems like there are so many characters barely getting any screen time.  Daenerys and Robb weren't even in the episode and Bran, Jon and Arya basically just got one scene/sequence each.  Hard to see how they'll cover the events of the entire book this season.
I think that part of the problem with so many characters is that some parts of the story will be glossed over until there is a reduction in the amount of cast members.  And it is kind of annoying that they spent so much time on characters that did NOT have significant pages in the books... it wouldn't seem so glossed over if they had a few more episodes this season to flesh things out (or reduce the number of characters to focus on).

Also... daenerys' story potentially involves a cameo by the dragons which is probably adding significantly to the budget (but it would seem by now that those kind of effects should be getting cheaper).  So it kind of makes sense... and skipping an episode kind of pushes her story toward the end of the season... I expect they will be skipping some of the desert stories... which might allow the stories to be similarly paced near the end of the season (hitting climaxes around the same time).

and are those digitally enhanced wolves i am seeing?

The wolf dreams are nice to see... hopefully the frogs make an appearance soon or are they skipping those characters?

I am still bummed that there were no Ned dreams for season 1 (even if they were 5-10 seconds a piece)... and since they skipped that entire thread of the book then I suppose it is possible that the frogs won't even make an appearance at all.

major book spoiler
Spoiler for Hiden:
the ned dreams and the stories from the marsh kids contain hints about jon's mother - the story of which the tv series seems to be skipping entirely

it would have been cooler for them to plant the seeds in the first season and have the shocking revelation happen during (or just before) the BIG scene coming up (if they felt the need to confirm it or make it explicit).

But I can't fault them for making it more upfront - its on the checklist of film/tv making now... next up incest will be in every show... lol .

alluding to a book spoiler
Spoiler for Hiden:
Also, it kind of makes sense for them to expand renlys story a bit considering the limited amount of time they have to tell his story

i honestly don't mind some of the changes they are making to the story (having fights instead of jousts, having a camp instead of a small keep for the nightwatch showdown, being caught immediately instead of having a side adventure before getting caught).

but I sooooooo wish that they had the scene where damphair was drowning converts for the god of the ironmen...

and the beauty should have been uglier.

definitely enjoying the season though... still worried about seeing a 20 yo arya at some point (but i guess they have stated that they are going to film the next two seasons back to back so maybe they might push the arya scenes early in the schedule)

the tyrion and cersi stuff has been fantastic... and that little shit king has continued to be awesome...

HBO can come up with a ending, but you'll have to read the books for the perfect one.
i will be perfectly happy if it makes it to the end of ASOS... (it would be nice if they used flashbacks in a couple of episodes to flesh-out the knight of the laughing tree story... the armorer could play the young baratheon, arya could play lyanna stark... it would be awesome... too bad it will probably never happen)

Meanwhile... the GOT marathon is happening today... and I finally got a joke (completely missed it the first time iirc)

it is the time that jon snow is talking with tubby about not wanting to father any bastards and...

Spoiler for Hiden:
tubby makes a good oral/other sex joke, "well then... you DIDN'T know where to put it"
that made me laugh... i can't believe i didn't notice it before

In fact, wouldn't Florida's stand-your-ground law give Travyon legal permission to do whatever he felt he needed to do to protect himself when a strange man starts following him in at threatening way?

This, in fact, is a critical point that I'd first heard on NPR that really turns this case upside down.  If Trayvon was threatened by a man with a gun, his 'stand your ground rights' allow him to pummel that guy in self defense.
wouldn't trayvon have to kill zimmerman for stand your ground to take effect (a simple pummeling wouldn't be enough to trigger it - right)?   At the very least, it seems unlikely that SYG would be triggered if the opposing party is there to muck it all up by telling an alternate tale.

seems like it would be better to kill first and ask questions later... <- I am being sarcastic (of course i guess you would have to start out by saying  "you are scaring me - i am in fear for my life" )

it generally pays to be able to start our your statement with, "I can speak without fear of contradiction"

is a gun required for stand your ground to be in play?

this reminds me of the tape that people claim that the super neighborhood watchman said some sort of racial slur (except this one isn't all fuzzy and unintelligible)

one of the other videos (20secs long) at your link actually go on past the vocalization that you claim can only mean one thing

"the anti-war government" -oddvocalization- "that america was a source of division around the world"

hopefully i typed that out accurately...

the place where i have -oddvocalization- (originally i had stutter there but it isn't quite a stutter )- you have the n word?  it wouldn't even make sense in that context

i am no fan of santorum... but jesus - what will happen when you actually see someone utter the word? (and not just imagine the intent?)

damn, if they keep up with one book per season it looks like they could get close to running out of stuff to film before he is done with the series:

http://m.ctv.ca/topstories/20120312/george-martin-game-of-thrones-120313.html

Quote
Still, Martin is promising his fans a tad quicker finish to the sixth and penultimate book in the series, "The Winds of Winter." He says he already has 200 pages written and hopes to have it finished in two, maybe three years.

Even with that "speedy" prediction, it could be the turn of the next decade before Martin finishes up the series with "A Dream of Spring."
that link isn't working for me, so i don't know if it references one book per season, but in previous articles - there has been reference to the later books in the series getting two seasons per book (starting with storm of swords)

meanwhile... events in the storm of swords take place within a year or so from the beginning of the series.

in that book arya was still at the beginning of her story by the time the (or one of the - depending on your opinion smile ) most awesome sword fight in a fantasy book occurs...

real life arya will have aged 3-4 years (depending on if they have an extra season in there)

in book 5 and 6 take place in parallel for the most part (adding another 6 months to book arya?)... and real life arya ages another 2-4 years

THAT is the real problem for the tv series in my opinion (if they were smart they would film ALL arya/bran scenes for the ENTIRE - currently published - BOOK SERIES in the next season - assuming there isn't a time gap in any of the later published books)

(i have no problem with tv arya being older than book arya - i think i would have a problem with tv arya aging 8-10 years after the series ends when arya likely will age 2-3 years - at most)

book spoiler regarding rickon
Spoiler for Hiden:
with rickon... they can just recast him 8 years from now when he reappears

and...
most successful tv series end around season 5 due to the syndication stuff right? (probably poorly worded but i think you know what i mean)
when do most HBO series end? frown
i will be happy even if they end it at storm of swords...

if anything... this series kind of proves the original point GRRM had stated a long time ago that it would have been impossible to film a movie series based on the books that gave it any kind of justice.  Even in the tv series they are blowing some of the good stuff - like ned dreams from the books (a pet peeve of mine - but i am glad the tv series made it to air).

I really wish they would do a hedge knight movie...  heck THAT might have been a better TV series to shoot for... traveling knight and his squire traveling from village to village solving crimes and having succinct 48 minute adventures

queue law and order bom bom

Also an annoyance for me... for several episodes they would kill endless romans AND LEAVE ALL THE WEAPONS AND ARMOR (yes - they stars of the show are gladiators... but not all slaves are gladiators)

I think in most situations this season, Spartacus et al. killed Romans mainly by necessity (i.e. when they were on the run). In those cases, they can't really stop to strip the soldiers of their armor.
yeah i understand what you are saying... but it is not like they couldn't pick up a sword or shield and hand it to the next unarmed slave they see... it is nice to see them picking up weapons occasionally now.

i am pretty sure the woman that got killed that episode was a girl... going to miss her

I am also going to miss the latest girl to get the axe... (the story twist was a tad ludicrous but will ensure that my favorite evil blond - who actually looks like a girl i know - will be around for another episode or two i guess)

I am beginning to think these writers hate hot chicks...

Damn the Roman stuff is good!!!
yeah... the roman story is more fun to watch - whenever they switch to the spartacus story it seems like they spend 20 minutes playing grab-ass and have one or two lines that advance the story.

Decent episode with three glaring problems.
Spoiler for Hiden:

1. This ain't Mass Effect or Counterstrike, folks. The head shot parade was insane and defied belief. Trying to shoot zombies in the head while driving 20-30 MPH over rough terrain isn't going to happen. Also, how many shots does that rifle have, Hershel? 25? 30?

2. Jimmy's death was moronic. You pull over into a herd and don't even have the door closed?

Ok, I could forgive those two...but this next one almost ruined it for me.

3. Lori's reaction was again evidence of horrible, sloppy writing where there's no consistency. Just a few episodes ago she was telling Rick to essentially kill Shane. Now she's upset when the deed is done in self-defense? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Even my wife, who is much more forgiving than I am, said that was "dumb".

But at least "Teh Stupid" was covered up by some good zombie action.

Also, I was wondering if anyone else caught this. In Episode 1, Rick sees a helicopter in Atlanta and starts to gallop after it. That's when he turns the corner and meets up with a huge pack of zombies and has to take refuge in the tank. That's the real start of his zombie journey, which put him at the farm. This pack of zombies followed a helicopter (I believe it was the same one) out of Atlanta and, like Rick, ultimately ends up at the farm. I just thought that was interesting and some nice consistency.

I have to agree with black...

1 - i will give someone in the movies/tv 80% accuracy but not 100%

2 - it was more than just that specific example -
Spoiler for Hiden:
ALOT of those deaths were stupid - not to mention the fact that they are in cars... RUN THEM OVER as the first option and save the ammo.

and NO backup plan... NO walkie talkies... one gun shot wakes up every zombie for miles around and sends them into a frenzy????????

3 - it was a bad over the top reaction (even if you discount the specific timing of her overreaction)

Overall it was a good episode, but some of the hamhanded actions/dialog/deaths made it less than it could have been (it could have been listed in a top season finales list if not for some of the poor choices they made)

good stuff for next season - still interested in watching it  - (i just think that the farm story was poor in general - story logic wise it just didn't make sense to me)

looked on the forums and saw that some people had to restart Steam a couple of times to get it to show.
cool little game... i thought it might not work when i saw how choppy the movie and menu screen was... it was slideshow speed on the menu but silky smooth in game on my old pc (it would be funny if min specs were required for the movie or menu but not the game).

the only downside is that now that the free weekend is over steam does not list the game to let me remove the game (3gb with no way to delete it? ouch).

i will have to dig around the forums to see how we are supposed to remove the game in order to recover the HD space.

here is a thread that provides a link to launch steam and delete it... (weird that the game doesn't show up to allow you to delete it  yourself without the link)

I feel like the Spartacus camp stuff gets worse every week and the Roman back-stabbing gets better.

Yeah... something is missing... i think the actor is fine.  The writing/situations seems weaker for the spartacus camp though.

Also an annoyance for me... for several episodes they would kill endless romans AND LEAVE ALL THE WEAPONS AND ARMOR (yes - they stars of the show are gladiators... but not all slaves are gladiators)

In the last couple of episodes, they are showing non-glads getting trained in archery and stuff (but it would still be nice to see them picking up shields for the non-glads at least)

I also enjoyed this last episode showing that the recent slaves right of the boat didn't appreciate what was given to them.  I am hoping the story they are trying to tell with the gladiators gets better from here.

ps - i am going to miss that blond

the commercial was endless - I don't know if it was the full 3:30 secs or if it was trimmed to 3 minutes... but i was laughing outloud (thinking that the fabled "what the hell is this ad selling" riff has gotten out of control - keep in mind i missed the beginning... i figured jewelery or watches... but had not seen any company brands)
